Falcons @ Giants: Game-Time 'Open Thread'
The winner of this Wild Card game gets rewarded with a date to meet the defending Super Bowl Champion Green Bay Packers next week. The New York Giants always seem to peak for the playoffs and despite the great seasons that Drew Brees and Aaron Rodgers are having, Eli Manning is quietly having a Pro Bowl-caliber season himself.
Meanwhile, Atlanta Falcons QB Matt Ryan is still looking for his first playoff win and going to New York Jersey will be a tough task for the guy most often compared to our Baltimore Ravens QB Joe Flacco. Stick with Baltimore Beatdown to post your comments on this Wild Card round game and come back later today for another 'Open Thread' on the Pittsburgh Steelers at the Denver Broncos.

anthem
for some reason, I think that was perhaps the best National Anthem rendition I have heard at any football game… trombone shorty ftw!

trying to have interest in this game. two teams i usually find myself raking the yard when on. GOOO..uhhh, team.
got to give up to any animal that fights things 10 times their size without fear. the most amazing thing i have ever seen (outside of the Vonte Leach screen) is the merecat (sp) taking on cobra. they can actually take a cobra strike, go into a coma and survive.
You mean Braves beating the Mets right?
You come at the king, you best not miss.

Can't tell where the arms start and stop
But wet leaves make sleds a lot slippery on the slopes, unless there are too many and you brake too fast and go head over turning bars. I had a Flexible Flyer, an old wooden and heavy metal one that flew over rocks and almost killed me a few times.
aka 'Rexx'
haha..we had a creek at the base of a hill and if you over shot you went in..and home soaked and bruised, the big kids used to stack as many bodies on the sled as possible and the poor guy on the bottom steering the metal runner sled was forced by shear tonage to bail out last. he usually ended up taking the sled into the drink. to our dads dismay,
we used to run the water bill up by sprinkling the top of the run with a garden hose on freezing nights. talk about a wicked, no-steering start. just don’t get dem types of winters round heres no more. toooo warm.
Ha. I remember
We use sto steal trays from the food service at college and sneak onto the frozen golf course next door in the middle of the night all drunk and we’d sled down the course for a half mile. We’d wake up the next morning all bruised and hung over, with our white underwear blue from the wet jeans!

Broncos not putting the most confidence in Tebow. It’s being reported that Quinn will be playing in 3rd and long situations and if Tebow can’t get anything going will probably take over for him completely.
On Ed Reed:
"I’ve told him to his face many times, ‘You’re the greatest safety ever to play the game,’"
"We all learn from each other, but we all learn most from him."
- Troy Polamalu
Yeah don’t know if that’s the greatest strategy to come out and say that. Running a 2 QB system in the playoffs is probably not a winning formula.

playing Brady Quinn
is pretty damn desperate

the more tricks the broncs can pull out the better. give pitt a dose of your heaviest back early and often. it has stuck with me how they had trouble stopping up the gut runners like leron mcclaine. attack up the middle. end arounds and slow developing bouncing outside plays right into their hands. i would like to see how a Tebow-McGahee Navy option might play out. but, i think it would be wise to run up the gut, burn the clock and let Pitt stress a close 4th quarter Tebow game.
So what do yall think of playing the Texans?
Would you have rather faced them or us?

well, we’ve had success against them. in a nut shell. thats all you can ask. plus, they have a 5 game starter entering a hostile stadium with playoff veterans awaiting. it broke down nice for us. but, the texans have some great players and can rip off a big play at any time. if we contain and play solid, straight up football using Rice and our TE’s for a safe methodical pounding of the ball we should be okay.looking forward to your game today.
Where did he or I make any mention of the Steelers?
We were both talking about the Texans/Ravens game

Typical pitt fan…can’t even keep track of their own thoughts

Would have preferred pitt in Baltimore but this will do and that still may happen
How do you feel about hitting the road
by Evan Skev on Jan 8, 2012 2:45 PM EST via mobile up reply actions
I like the fact that we have experience winning road playoff games
but would have loved to have the #2 seed. I am not confident in our chances at making the Super Bowl because of all our injuries but I do think we should win this week and anything after that will be gravy for me.

Good attitude. I don’t think injuries are the problem. Colbert is slipping… Tomlin is slipping… The team needs major help on O
by Evan Skev on Jan 8, 2012 2:51 PM EST via mobile up reply actions
Blatantly wrong
Noone is slipping in our organization and we still draft amongst the top of the teams int he NFL. Colbert and Tomlin cant control players getting injured. Here is a list of injuries we have had this season
QB: Ben, Leftwhich
RB: Mendy, Moore, Dwyer, Batch
WR: Sanders, Ward, Cotchery
TE: Johnson
OT: Starks, Colon, Gilbert
OG: Foster, Kemo, Legursky
C: Pouncey
DL: Hampton, Smith, Hood
LB: Harrison, Woodley, Sylvester
CB: McFadden, Brown, Allen
S: Clark
P: Sepulveda
The Front Office does not control people getting injured and the fact that we went 12-4 despite all this prooves just how good Colbert/Tomlin did this year

Slipping… Big time. The O line is still horrible…even without injury. Tomlin is an idiot… “Two schools of thought?”. Ok Mike.
The arians rothos combo is deadly… For your team. The arians rothlis & colbert trifecta is great for opposing D
GB had how many players on IR when they shredded pitt last Feb? 16? Next man up… But in pitts case, there is no next man because the fo is drafting WRS
by Evan Skev on Jan 8, 2012 3:17 PM EST via mobile up reply actions
I hope they’re as happy with being 12-4 as you are… Against the weakest schedule in the league. Draft more WRs!
by Evan Skev on Jan 8, 2012 3:19 PM EST via mobile up reply actions
Stopping the run is the key to the game along with turnovers.
I like the Ravens chances because Flacco is greater than Yates.
I'd rather face the Texans
Simply because playing the Texans and Steelers/Patriots is “easier” than playing the Steelers and Patriots. (I wrote easier in quotations because these ARE playoff games!)
Yep understandable.
I was hoping the Bengals won so maybe they could beat the Pats because having to face the Pats and the Ravens in the same playoffs will be brutal

I think we win something like 24-0 or 24-3
If we were fully healthy I think it would be like 45-0 but even with our current roster, Tebow and Quinn should not be able to move the ball at all and we should be able to get a couple big plays that lead to points. Next week is the week I am worried about

How does your O score 20 on the Denver D? 45? HAHAHAHAHA!
Dude… Get real. I doubt pitt wins today on the road unless its another 7-3 deal like the Brizzowns game. Come on man….
by Evan Skev on Jan 8, 2012 3:35 PM EST via mobile up reply actions
who’s winning? lol. ever listen to The FAN on the radio out of NY. that old guy they have on there at night is awesome. he talks about football like he’s narrating a Dr. Seus cartoon. it’s the same callers every night. the same poor shut ins.like Bob in Parkville. they spend more time talking about the Jets woos than they do the Giants successes.
Matt Ryan is a quarter and a half away from being 0-3 in the playoffs
Matty Ice is melting
Why didn’t they take 3 points there.. weird

Huge error… Mortgage future drafts to pick up a rookie WR and the coach shits the bed in the playoffs. Someone is getting fired
by Evan Skev on Jan 8, 2012 3:27 PM EST via mobile up reply actions
Mike Mularkey is their offensive coordinator.
I’m not feeling that guy.
I was hoping we'd get Mike Sherman
but it looks like he’s in line to get the Buc’s head coaching job
Sigh...another season with Cam
To be fair though, I want to get a very good – great offensive coordinator, not just a replacement for replacement’s sake.
Oh, I know. Same here.
I just want a guy who has a better feel for the game than Cam does. Sometimes, I think the guy loses his feel for the game throughout the contest. Norv Turner would’ve been awesome if he was fired.
Norv is the same as cam. They both come from the same coaching tree and have very similar offensive philosophies.
On Ed Reed:
"I’ve told him to his face many times, ‘You’re the greatest safety ever to play the game,’"
"We all learn from each other, but we all learn most from him."
- Troy Polamalu
Its different. Norv is a different breed than Cam.
Same family tree but Norv is simply much better.
Not really. They both run a similar offense the key difference is Norv has the big WR’s who know how to stretch the field vertically which is needed in that style of offense. Cam put up the same numbers in SD when he was OC there.
On Ed Reed:
"I’ve told him to his face many times, ‘You’re the greatest safety ever to play the game,’"
"We all learn from each other, but we all learn most from him."
- Troy Polamalu
Track record is what Norv has.
Its ridiculous. Norv has had success at numerous stops in his career.
Perhaps.
The biggest thing about Norv is the players LOVE him. You hear how our defense talks up Chuck Pagano, right? We NEVER hear that with our offense. Chemistry will go a long way, especially for Joe.
They also severely under perform every season. One of the most talented teams in the NFL and can’t make playoffs in one of the worst divisions in football.
On Ed Reed:
"I’ve told him to his face many times, ‘You’re the greatest safety ever to play the game,’"
"We all learn from each other, but we all learn most from him."
- Troy Polamalu
I think that's more of a reflection as a head coach than an OC
They’ve had a #1 offense and have been a top 10 offense for some time. That’s all we need in terms of and OC. Harbs will handle the head coaching
Yeah, but they have always had a top 10 offense even when cam was there. I just don’t see anything special that he’s done there given the talent on that roster.
On Ed Reed:
"I’ve told him to his face many times, ‘You’re the greatest safety ever to play the game,’"
"We all learn from each other, but we all learn most from him."

Matty Ice………. Twin stud WRs to match the twin points the Atlanta D scored
by Evan Skev on Jan 8, 2012 3:36 PM EST via mobile reply actions
I respect your opinion Matty Ice.
His record will show that he has lost two teams that have appeared in the Super Bowl with one of them winning it and Giants team loaded with pass rushers. His coach didn’t do him any favors by going for it on fourth down several times in a close game where his defense was playing great. His coach took points off the board. He must have been watching the Lions and Saints. It just wasn’t that type of game. Take the points and keep it moving. I’m not giving Matty Ice a pass. I’m just pointing out the circumstances.
And to aid Flacco's (b/c no one else will) and the Ravens cause,
We have only lost in the post-season to teams that went onto the Super Bowl in the Harbaugh era :)
Thus, its hard to win a playoff game in this league, let alone a Super Bowl.
Its mostly about match-ups.
Flacco has the 2nd worst OC in the pros but all he does is win
