and it was not yet published on BR.com.
A while back (after Redskins exhibition game), I thought the team should release Foxworth, as his cap number was high and he looked horrible, and I’m wondering if the team is now wondering if they should have done this as well.
aka 'Rexx'
I didnt think releasing him would had been a good idea I do agree the money he was getting was a little too much
but a healthy Foxworth would had played better and would had probably intercepted that ball from kenny britt in that titans game. I kinda dont agree with the idea of the ravens signing burgess becuase it would had been nice for them to bring in veteran cornerback like Will Allen but I guess they have faith in Brown, Gorrer and etc

I also thought the team might not want him
because of his role in the Lockout, as the Jets did with their previous All-Pro center (?).
However, I believe his cap hit would have actually been higher had they dumped him. Now, he gets his full 2011 salary, but I’d be surprised if they retain him next season.

how many times does it have to be mentioned
that releasing him would accelerate his cap hit and make it worse
I would think that they’re almost guarunteed to release him next year. He’s been a real bust for us.
He played well towards the end of 2009, but that was about it. He’s never really played up to his contract. I don’t blame the front office for the contract since he flashed good upside in Atlanta and we’d obviously be talking much different about him if he wasn’t injured. There was no way to predict what happened. It’s just bad luck for Foxworth and the Ravens. It happens to every team at some point.
Did he show that much upside though. I remember Atlanta not being too sad to see him go at the salary we were giving him. It definitely seems like we overpaid for the guy and that is hurting us even more now that he can’t stay healthy with that knee. I know a lot of fans questioned that salary for a guy that wasn’t a top 10 CB.
It really seems like a bad move from the start.

I thought we get back roughly $4mil if we had cut him. I understand he’s going to cost us $5.6mil next year. I really don’t see the guy sticking around at that contract

Official Team Press Release
For Immediate Release
RAVENS PLACE CB FOXWORTH ON IR, SIGN LB BURGESS
The Baltimore Ravens have placed CB Domonique Foxworth on Injured Reserve and signed LB Prescott Burgess to their 53-man roster.
Foxworth, who missed the entire 2010 campaign after undergoing surgery for a knee injury sustained during training camp, played in the first two games of 2011, posting two tackles. The seven-year veteran was inactive in last week’s win at St. Louis.
A sixth-round draft choice by Baltimore in 2007, the 6-foot-3, 253-pound Burgess has seen action in 37 career games. Entering his fifth NFL season, Burgess led the Ravens in special teams tackles in both 2010 (15) and 2009 (a career-high 34).

I’m honestly a little annoyed at him.
If he had spent more time rehabbing instead of acting like a big shot in NYC, he’d probably be okay.

The lockout didn’t help him since he couldn’t contact team trainers or coaches, but even still… you’d think a guy being paid that much for his athletic ability would hire the best private trainer and rehab specialist in the nation if needed.
maybe Foxworth did rehab properly but just for some reason just didnt heal
fast enough sometimes it takes a person longer to heal from a acl injury even when they rehab. I honestly doubt that Foxworth didnt rehab as much as he was suppose to do but if he didn’t I guess his job on the player committee just was overwhelming to the point he missed a few days to rehab and was more focus on getting football back on track

Its absolutely the truth. The lockout hurt him a lot because he was stuck in a suit in meetings all offseason. A little more rehab probably would have brought him up to speed. No way of knowing for sure, but these players have rehab for a reason and he didnt get enough this offseason.
by Mstevens_Design on Sep 28, 2011 4:25 PM EDT up reply actions
for all we know it’s the opposite and he’s still hurt because he tried to do too much too soon without the supervision and advice of team trainers.
"Airborne, do not look at the ground. I promise you, it will be there. Unless the tectonic plates shift, and a chasm opens up on the drop zone, in which case we will surely let you know."
But it really looks more like he was stuck in meetings all day and couldnt get to is rehab. Like I said, the only people that know for sure is Foxworth and the trainers. But putting him on IR really doesn’t look good for the guy.

I never understood signing him for the $$$ he got in 09
The guy had 1 decent year in Atlanta after playing nickel in Denver and we gave him way too much to come here and suck except for like 3 games in 09.

I think foxworth played exceptionally well later on in the season for the ravens just like Josh Wilson. Alot of ravens think he sucked but i think that is the same guy that held Randy Moss in check for most of the patriots game in the playoffs and their were plenty other good wideouts he did cover very well

They wouldn’t necessarily have to put him on Andre, but if they did want to go with the “baptism by fire” route, Andre is the perfect WR to do that with.

no but i don’t want Jimmy being put out there to be humiliated after coming back from an injury. put cary on Andre with Reed over the top, that’s all you can do.
"Airborne, do not look at the ground. I promise you, it will be there. Unless the tectonic plates shift, and a chasm opens up on the drop zone, in which case we will surely let you know."
I wouldnt mind seeing Jimmy with some safety help. He won’t be ready to be put on an island yet, but with a little help, we can shut down most of their passing attack right there. I just don’t think Cary can match up with Andre even with safety help, I just don’t think he has the body type for it.

I just don’t think Cary can match up with Andre even with safety help, I just don’t think he has the body type for it.
I honestly cant see how Jimmy Smith could do better against Johnson than Cary unless he seriously step up his game from the preseason and traning camp.Smith and Williams are both in the same level and that level is the growing level but Williams have shown to be better than Smith through training camp and preseason game.
you speak of body type Well Williams is 190 and 6-1 also lets look at some other cornerbacks that have been/are very good in the league Champ Bailey is 192 and 6-0. Darielle Revis is 198 5-11,Nnamdi asosuperbad4 the eagles is 210 and 6-2, Ike Taylor is 6-2 195 and etc.
hmmm as you can see their are some pretty good cornerbacks that are kinda in the weight/height range as Williams and their are some pretty good cornerbacks that are in Jimmy Smith wieght/height range.
Overall the cornerbacks I listed are not good not only because of their size but are better because they can cover and if you think a rookie like smith can come in ( 6-2 205) and cover 6-3 226 pound Andre Johnson is a big risk to take even with safety help.
unless Smith can prove he has improved on his coverage skills and etc then I dont see how he should cover Johnson over Williams

The reason is that size and strength help, but it’s the ability to use your hands is what makes a CB so effective in press coverage. It’s not trying to knock Cary, but Jimmy is the best we have at using his hands. Even Carr said he played with Aso early in his career and he said Jimmy is further along than Aso was and is one of the better CB’s he’s seen when it comes to using his hands.

In preseason he stuck with his guys fairly well. But its an issue of being big. Now I didnt realize Cary was that big, but it would be nice to have a bigger guy in there to face off against Andre, a WR that uses his size to get into the CB and then the speed to get around them. Look at how Cary did with Britt…..
But I also thought you were on of the ones that said preseason isn’t a good indicator of a player :) Jimmy played well during the preseason but got beat due to a lack of knowledge of the playbook or just ridiculous catches. I think he would be the better matchup on Andre Johnson.
by Mstevens_Design on Sep 29, 2011 2:47 PM EDT up reply actions
agreed. The fact is nobody we have can guard Andre. He’s arguably the best WR in the league. All we can do is put our best press CB on him (jimmy) slide some S help that way and hope our pass rush is effective. Nobody at this time is going to lock down Andre especially if we have trouble getting to Schaub. Pass rush will be huge in trying to contain him.

Look at how Cary did with Britt…..
When I watched Cary Covering Britt it was more of Cary not staying in good techniqe which he said so him self.
.
Now I didnt realize Cary was that big
Yeah not only that but Chykie Brown is 6’0 190 and Danny Gorrer is 6’0 185 leaving the other cornerbacks like Webb and Carr the only shortest cornerbacks on the roster so far.
But I also thought you were on of the ones that said preseason isn’t a good indicator of a player :)
its not a full indicator of a player because training camp/practice play role into it as well but their has been times where players light it up in preseason and suck in the regular season. Cary out performerd just about every cornerback on the roster not only in training camp but preseason as well. I know Jimmy Smith has the talent to be something one day but right now I’m more excited to see how Williams develops.
Jimmy played well during the preseason but got beat due to a lack of knowledge of the playbook or just ridiculous catches
I think it was more of the fact that he made mental mistakes doing the time he got beat then anything not because he had lack of knowledge of the playbook.
I think he would be the better matchup on Andre Johnson.
im not saying I disagree with you but thats a big risk in my opinion esspecially for a rookie player with no game experience besides special teams that will be coming off a injury.
Just because Smith is 205 and 6-2 doesnt mean he is ready to cover Andre Johnson but hey you could be right and I could be wrong.

I don’t care if he was abducted by aliens on certain plays. The end result is still a TD and a loss. If all of our CBs had perfect technique, we wouldn’t be having this discussion at all.
Chykie Brown is 6’0 190 and Danny Gorrer is 6’0 185
With them its not so much size that’s an issue, but seeing playing time. They are not starters yet in their careers and have poor techniques. They could be 8’ tall and it wouldn’t matter if they get beat and make mental mistakes.
I think it was more of the fact that he made mental mistakes
Honestly, he had his WR shut down for the most part, minus that 1 TD that was just error. All the other catches, were 1 handed, insane catches where he was on top the WR. A perfect throw and an athletic catch will win out in those situations, but that isn’t Jimmy’s fault in those instances.
Like we’ve all said a few times so far… No one we have can match up 1 on 1 with Andre Johnson. The guy is the best WR in the game right now. However, I think seeing Cary get beat against Britt means he’s going to get beat badly against Andre. I would like to see how Jimmy does against him with some safety help. We know what Cary can do, but we have no idea what Jimmy can do right now. If he does poorly, then we can switch it out to Cary, but Jimmy I think gives us the best physical matchup on a guy like Andre.
We’ll see what happens if Jimmy is ready by then.

Calvin Johnson is the best WR in the game.

I completely agree. It’s funny that Chris Carter said that he wasn’t an elite receiver before the season started.
You put that guy with one of the elite QB’s in the league, I honestly think he could have approached Jerry Rice….
"'If there isn't a bone sticking out of my leg, I'm playing" - Marshall Yanda
6’5" 235 pounds and runs a 4.3? He is literally a comibnation of the best attributes you can ask for in a WR. Andre Johnson was never as big of a deep threat as Calvin. He is basically Andre Johnson with Desean Jackson deep threat abilities.
"'If there isn't a bone sticking out of my leg, I'm playing" - Marshall Yanda
I know. It’s a sick combination.
He’s like the Haloti Ngata of receivers. What those guys can do physically doesn’t seem possible.
I firmly believe that he is more physically gifted than Randy Moss was, and that is saying alot. Moss had the speed and leaping ability, but man was he rail thin when he came in the league. Calvin is built like a freaking defensive end and does all the things Moss did.

And don’t even get me started on their 2009 trip, they got in because 2 teams laid down from them in the final two weeks.

Yeah… They seriously backed into the playoffs in 2009. Once they got there, the Bengals were serious pretenders and SD never wins big in the playoffs.
One of the luckiest runs I’ve ever seen.
I mean, we played Miami and Tenn in our run to the AFCCG, but atleast we did it in convincing fashion both games. NYJ needed last minute stuff to get by Cinci.

no way it takes until week 9 for him to get back.
best tackling team in the NFL, most physical and just dominates people. When we walk out of the tunnel and out of that locker room, we expect to shut people out and play great defense - Ravens DC Chuck Pagano
I fully believe he’ll be back by Week 6, but the kid has 0 NFL games of CB experience under his belt. Is guess it’ll take him a week or two before he’s a starter.

I’m grateful for everything Foxworth did in the negotiations to get the lockout lifted, but it makes you wonder how his knee would’ve been if he had spent more time rehabbing. Oh well, more reps for Jimmy when he comes back.

I guess Foxworth didnt rehab his knee properly like he should plus he want able to get help
with rehab for the ravens doctor because of the lockout but hopefully next year he be healthy and even better

Maybe, but I don’t he’ll be back Jazz. Jimmy will have a year under his belt, and we’ll have Carr and Webb still under contract. I believe Foxworth is scheduled to get 5+ million next year, and that’s money that can be used to lockup Flacco, Rice, and Grubbs.

I think it would be a big mistake to let Webb go. He has all the skills to be a great #2 CB for us down the road. Would love to see how much better he is 2-3 years from now. Already is one of our best 1 on 1 tacklers.
"'If there isn't a bone sticking out of my leg, I'm playing" - Marshall Yanda
Don’t start that… We’re getting as bad as Pittsburgh fans bragging about how well their corners can tackle.
Well he has other great qualities, such as his ability to stick with most of the fast, slot guys in the league. He has done a very nice job with guys like Mike Wallace, Devry Henderson, etc in the past.
But I was simply pointing out that for a CB, he is a very goo tackler, and does so on run plays, not just pass plays. And we have all seen his blitzing abilities.

webb is much more than a role player
youre the guy who thought gaither should be signed so forgive us if we dont value your opinion on personnel
everyone value’s his opinion except you, even if we came out on different sides of the gaither issue.
Webb is pretty much a role player at this point. He starts when he has to, but not because he’s earned that starting spot. Definition of a role player.

I really like the direction the secondary is heading even if it’s not there yet.
We all love what we’ve seen from Cary, and if Jimmy is as good as Ozzie thinks he is, they’ll have two big, physical corners on the outside. Carr is an excellent nickel corner, and Webb is doing a fair job at starting so having him as the fourth corner is a huge luxury in my mind. Throw in the upside of Chykie Brown and I’d say we have a pretty darn good group to build on.
He’s built like a safety :)
But nah, I like Webb. He’s fast and he’s really gotten the knack of blitzing down. Even as a role player, I really think he helps make this team better because of his physical ability. He doesn’t deserve the starting spot, but I like seeing him in there a few plays each game.

they may turn out like eagles fans hoped Nnamdi, Samuiel and Cromartie to be

Agreed that I would want to keep webb. He really hasn’t played CB all that long since he was a S in college and has all the tools to be a solid CB. he has the speed and hips to play in the slot, but the slot is tough because they don’t have the sideline for help, so he just needs to work on getting adjusted to that. I know he’s gotten beat recently, but I’m not ready to give up on him just yet.

not surprising to hear
Sounds like a contract restructure to me…. If he wants to stay let him, but Dominique should not get starter money. If he doesn’t restructure, ship him off to AZ…

I understand that
I say we cut him and offer him the vet minimum to come back. If he can show that he’s healthy then he may be able to get a decent contract the following year.

Chykie Brown better step up. Last thing we need now is Carr’s hammy acting up. Can’t afford anymore injuries
by Raven_all_day on Sep 28, 2011 1:23 PM EDT via mobile reply actions
As much as I really don’t think Foxworth is a #1 corner, him going on IR really hurts us. We are already dinged up at that position and entering the hardest part of our schedule. The limited depth we have mixed with our CBs not being big or super physical is going to show itself against larger WRs like Andre Johnson.
I wouldn’t be surprised if we go out and trade for a CB right now. We could use the help at that position over the next few weeks.
by Mstevens_Design on Sep 28, 2011 4:37 PM EDT reply actions
I think Webb, Cary, Carr and Jimmy is plenty depth. I’ll take a healthy Chykie Brown over a one legged Foxworth all day long also.
"'If there isn't a bone sticking out of my leg, I'm playing" - Marshall Yanda
Carr and Jimmy are dinged up though. So its Webb, Cary and Brown right now with no one really behind that. Also having the injury to Ruki hurts as well since he was our backup nickle. Hopefully everyone gets healthy ASAP cause we will need all hands on deck with the Jets and Houston in the next 2 weeks.
by Mstevens_Design on Sep 28, 2011 5:05 PM EDT up reply actions
Chris Carr played in the last game and he has said to be have felt better since his break
during the titans game. I know Ruki is a good players but he isnt better than Carr when it comes to the nickel postion. So far the ravens have Williams, Webb,Carr Brown, and Gorrer that are healthy thats not bad at all then after the jets game smith comes back.

The fact that they’re holding it together even with all the injuries is pretty impressive.
Once we get Jimmy back and Carr is completely recovered, I think the secondary will be great.
We’re the number one scoring defense with several injuries throughout the secondary. I’m really looking forward to seeing what Pagano can accomplish with healthy cornerbacks.
Water covers 2/3 of the Earth's surface. Ed Reed covers the rest.

Exactly right. I strongly believe that Carr and Jimmy are out two most talented corners, and we haven’t even had them this entire year so far besides a few snaps from Carr.
If this pass rush keeps up like it has been, even the best QB’s won’t be able to do anything against us.
"'If there isn't a bone sticking out of my leg, I'm playing" - Marshall Yanda
I’m not sold yet on the whole Carr vs. Cary thing, one way or the other. My strong instinct at this point right now is that Carr was well-utilized in Mattison’s conservative schemes last season, while Cary is better suited for Pagano’s more aggressive press coverage schemes. I’m not sure you can say one is “better” than the other right now, since they both have different strengths and weaknesses.
"Airborne, do not look at the ground. I promise you, it will be there. Unless the tectonic plates shift, and a chasm opens up on the drop zone, in which case we will surely let you know."
