What Should Ravens Do At Wide Receiver?

Now that free agent wide receivers Derrick Mason and Malcom Floyd have shunned us and signed with other teams, where do the Baltimore Ravens go from here? Some are discussing recently released New York Jets WR Jerricho Cotchery. While I don't dislike him, and don't think he is a bad option, I don't think he is the BEST option out there. Most of the options out there are nothing to talk about: Randy Moss(retired), TO (Diva), Steve Smith NYG (coming off big inury). The guy I want to discuss is a guy very familiar to us Ravens fans....

Star-divide

MARK CLAYTON.

He is still out there, played well (in the games he played, click here) last year in St. Louis, and is unrestricted. We traded him because he was redundant and we were worried about having to pay him this off-season. However, he is still in his prime and would be a great option for us. He is a similar player to Mason, although a better deep threat. He is a veteran, and a very good locker room guy. I do not think there is anything to talk about. He is the only decent option out there. Whether we get him and Cotchery, or just Clayton, either way I think he should be our next target. If we could get him for 2-4 years for around Malcom Floyd money ($2-3 million a year), I say do it!

Am I missing something?

Wasn’t Clayton one of Bradford’s go to guys last year. Why on earth would Clayton come back here to be overshadowed?

Clayton is also coming off a big injury. I believe he tore his ACL. I’m not opposed to bringing him back, but I don’t think he earned the same contract as a Malcom Floyd.

I don’t think Clayton is any better than any rookie we have. It would be a waste of money in my opinion.

I know Clayton didnt reach his expectation of his first round pick but you cant deny that guy was solid for us.

I dont know if Clayton is better than the Rookies or vice verse right now and I dont think you know that either because we have not actrally seen them play in preseason game or regular season game.

AV- How much would you spend on him? 1.5 million a year?

Benhem- he only played in 5 games due to injury, but they were a pretty good 5 games (300+ yds, 2 tds). They signed Mike Sims-Walker, so he would have more competition this year as the #1 there.

by Rayisyourdaddy on Aug 7, 2011 1:31 PM EDT up reply actions

yeah I would say that’s about right assuming we really need him. Coming off an ACL I don’t know that he offers a whole lot more than the rookies other than experience in the offense. I’m all for it if they think we really need a veteran, but if not just work with what we got.

We role with our young guys and see what they can do. Boldin is a great mentor and will bring them all along quickly.

Remember when all we had was Mason and Clayton and a bunch of rookies/retreds

And everyone was always clamoring for new, better receivers? Although Boldin is a longterm upgrade over Mason, we are worse 2-5 at WR then we have ever been in the history of the Ravens. We need to bring in another veteran if we have any hope to compete this year. I love Dickson and Pitta, but we need another WR so the rookies arent forced into roles they aren’t ready for.

Well it would be dumb to bring in a number 2 receiver for more than 1 year with Doss and Smith waiting in the wings. You don’t spend a 2nd rounder on someone who isn’t going to be a starter eventually.

So we have an off year.

Standing by our report that the Ravens DID NOT offer a contract to Derrick Mason, just as we stood by our Bulger retirement announcement.

For the love of God

ANYTHING but Housh or Cotchery. I’d much rather throw our young guys in the fire than bring back Housh, who is beyond washed up, or bring in Cotchery, who was never even good in the first place. I think, if anything, Ozzie will make a Josh Wilson type deal, where he brings in a young, underrated guy for cheap from another team that will be a pleasant surprise. But I still think (hope) it’s more likely we just go with Boldin and company.

I wouldn’t expect it at any position other than OT or RB. Ravens have D. Reed, T. Smith, Doss, and Williams to filter through. It wouldn’t make sense to bring in an expensive WR that might only get one year of starting play time.

I love the optimistic flavor that I'm seeing from fellow Raven fan post but dont let it cloud your judgement of common sense.

I dont have no doubt that Torrey Smith, Tandon Doss, David Reed and etc cant turn out to be good but can any of you guys actrally tell me right now that these guys are ready?

I just dont see how rookies that had no contact with there teams with in 126 days can be ready right off the back for a week one game against the steelers at least as a starter. Im not saying that it can’t happen but it just doesnt seem logical. I know some wideouts recently have become instant impact for a team as a rookie in the past but none these guys had to go through a lockout after they got drafted and they had a full length training camp to learn not a two week/ 3 hour session of training camp.

I could be wrong and really what do I know because I dont own a team and I’m definately have not being in the business of football as long as Ozzie Newsome. I honestly could be talking stupid and not making sense at all but hey I’m just Ravens Fan with a opinion wanting to see my team to get to the super bowl

One clarification

David Reed – not a rookie – 2nd year. Also, we’re not ALL rookies. We’ve got a handful of other guys who have more than a year’s experience – Harper, Jones etc. Not that they’re great, but as the saying goes, “Any given Sunday”.

Are you guys steeler fans or ravens fans. Ppl were bitching last year when everyone said we didn’t have the corners to be successful. Corners played great last year. We played with a fucked up O-line last yr. Rice had 1200 yards rushing and Flacco put up career numbers. You nor I can change what’s happen and it looks like ozzie doesn’t want to change anything either. STFU and let’s see what these guys can do.

We had more optimsm when it was just Clayton, Kelly Washington, and Mason at reciever. Now our talent and size has grown and yaw crying.

by Raven_all_day on Aug 7, 2011 2:06 PM EDT via mobile reply actions

exactly. We had Mason, Clayton and Washington as our only WR options and even though they are rookies they are better than that core. We have never had an elite group of WR’s and have contended every year still. Now we actually have some potential for some explosion in the group and that can only help.

Really Av23. If that the case tell me what have they done for you to say such things? If you going off potential/ talent then thats not clear enough.

Now we actually have some potential for some explosion in the group

Its not like this the first time ozzie has drafted wideouts that had potential to be exposive I meant he did draft Mark Clayton, Demetrius Williams, Yamon Figurs who all had speed and potentals to be something also shined in training camp just like Tandon Doss and Torrey Smith is doing right now atleast to my knowledge.

Because based on what I have seen out of them, yes they are more talented than those guys and we have more options than previous years. Any young guy that comes in to the league is based on potential and talent. Everyone wants vets just because they are vets. If a rookie is just better than a vet let the better man play. WR is not a position that you absolutely must be stacked at or you are screwed. We have a proven in Boldin, so let the other guys learn. The pats last year at one point had 6 or 7 rookies or 2nd year guys starting just on defense alone at one point, plus Gronkowski, Hernandez, and that WR on offense. They still had the best record in the league. Yes I know they didn’t win the Super Bowl, but they are more than capable of performing. We have always relied on our D and we will continue to do that this year along with an improved run game. Mark Clayton or Cotchery are not going to make or break whether we are a Super Bowl contender or not.

On Ed Reed:

I agree with you for the most part

what worries me is Boldin’s injury history. Last year was only the 3rd year in his career he played 16 games, and the first since 2006. Injuries are going to happen at every position, but aside from Flacco, Boldin is probably the guy we can least afford to lose. All unproven guys starting would not be a good thing.

by YeahDonnie on Aug 7, 2011 3:30 PM EDT up reply actions

If Boldin went down then yes it could be a different story, but for now we have him. I just am getting mad that people think we are a Super bowl contender if we sign any vet and barely make the playoffs if we don’t. We do not rely on our passing game to win us games.

Well some people are taking it to the extreme, or just exaggerating

Cam Cameron has shown that he wants to be a pass first offense, and if we can’t establish a solid passing game, the run game will get bottled up. It’s important to have balance, unless we can find a fountain of youth and bring back the 2000 defense.

I still think this is a playoff team no matter what, but it would be nice to have a little depth at WR, a very key position, in my opinion. In normal years, we could all have a little more faith in the young guys, but with the lockout, these guys just don’t have enough time to get fully acclimated to the offense and to play the Steelers week 1.

by YeahDonnie on Aug 7, 2011 3:44 PM EDT up reply actions

There's depth and there's DEPTH.
but it would be nice to have a little depth at WR

I understand what you’re saying if you mean depth of experience, but just in sheer numbers, a quick visit to Ravens.com says we currently have (and I know they’ll be pared down by Week 1) 12 WR’s on the roster. Now, while those ain’t Redskins numbers, I’m gonna say that out of 12 (or let’s say 11 and discount Q), we should be able to find one guy who can run, catch the ball and chew gum at the same time. They can’t all be cannon fodder.

I dont think a vet is the difference between playoffs and no playoffs. I think a vet WR is the differene between a first round exit and winning a few rounds, and also a higher seed.

by Rayisyourdaddy on Aug 7, 2011 6:01 PM EDT up reply actions

Higher seed? Maybe but in the end one player really doesn't make that kind of difference often.

More playoff wins? Unless we somehow snatch a star I doubt it. By the time the playoffs roll around I expect either Smith or Doss to have progressed to the level of any of the scrubs still left on the free market.

by Roa on Aug 8, 2011 12:32 AM EDT up reply actions

Don’t rely on a rookie as your saviour, especially at a hard position like WR. There were several WR’s last year who were drafted in the top 2 or 3 rounds (who people wanted us to draft btw) who basically did not contribute at all in their rookie years: Demariyus Thomas (283 yds, 2 tds), Golden Tate (220 0 tds), Damien Williams (219 0 tds). Even the good ones aren’t good enough to be a #2 WR: arrelious benn (395 2 tds), Emmanuel Sanders (376 2 tds), Brandon Lafell (468 1 td)

So what makes you all think that Torrey Smith can be better than EVERYONE else at the position with the exception of the 1st round guys like Dez Bryant?

So ya, we need a vet, because even if he isnt a stud, he will make the other teams pay for doubling Q. Send Torrey deep, Q over the middle, and a vet and/or Dickson and we are set.

But...

What has Clayton ever shown us (with the Ravens) that we should consider taking him back? ALL I remember Clayton for is a dropped pass in a SB drive. Beyond that, I can’t give you one career milestone (good or bad) from my memory.

Of the three supposed “great potential” WR’s you mention, I’ve said my piece about Clayton; Demetrius Williams never had it and I have no idea what the scout you got him drafted saw, and Yamon Figurs had what, 2-3 chances a season at WR when he was actually thrown to? Can’t base much off that.

by GrumpyOldBird on Aug 7, 2011 5:24 PM EDT up reply actions

Our rookies will grow up real fast if no other WR signed

and that could end up being very good as we can spread the ball around and defenses will not have much history to defend against. However, both Clayton and Housh know our system and are good teammates and mentors and that could be very under rated. Clayton was always a good guy and if healthy, would absolutely fill Mason’s shoes. In fact, had Mason retred a couple of years ago, I firmly believe Cayton would be still with us in the same exact role with similar stats. Flacco would welcome either but I do not think we drafted two WRs to sign 2 more veteran WR’s, just one. Besides, we could get Clayton or Housh for $1M a season w/ incentives at this point.

just to give you a smile on your face utah your boy Cary Williams was a beast in training camp yesterday

I think he has three interceptions and he tackle Boldin just in time to stop him from making a touchdown. this was also said :

Pagano still envisions a spot for Williams. He said a lot of teams these days will line up three wide receivers, then have an athletic tight end or two going out for passes, plus a scatback coming out of the backfield.

"There’s going to be ample opportunities to get him in the game and get him matched up," Pagano said.

"When you make plays day after day, down after down, your confidence builds. He knows we trust him, he knows we believe in him. Now it’s just a matter of going out there and doing it."

Williams has been particularly adept at shutting down passes to the outside. His break on the ball, long arms and solid hands have led to the three practice picks and was the reason he got to rookie Tyrod Taylor’s pass on Saturday.

He also broke up two consecutive passes in the end zone during red zone drills, and made a simulated touchdown-saving tackle by pushing receiver Anquan Boldin out of bounds.

I don't

Way too early to say. We’ve got a QB and a system that has targeted 3 guys for 3 years and forgotten about most of the rest of the field. Two of those guys are gone, so it’s anyone’s guess who will get thrown to (beyond Boldin) and who won’t. Can’t make predictions based on that.

then from what position on the field? What do you expect from TE 1 and 2 in 2011 compared to 2011? What about WR 2 and 3 compared to 2010? Will Boldin’s and Rice’s numbers improve or take a step back? I’m not looking for prediction, just thoughts and guesses. Personally, I’m really questioning where our passing offensive output is going to come from this year.

by onethingiknow on Aug 7, 2011 5:51 PM EDT up reply actions

I’d say that the season (assuming no injuries etc.) will be split 1/3 — 2/3. The first 1/3 will be Flacco throwing to Rice, Boldin and both TE’s (but probably Dickson first). If the TE’s prove reliable, and he can get to Boldiin regularly, then I don’t expect much change in the last 2/3. And their numbers will be about the same as last season – just sub Q for Mason and Dickson/Pitta for Heap.

If they can’t get it going in the first 1/3, then I’d say it’s anybody’s guess who’s going to be getting the ball. And if that’s the case, i see the 2-3 receivers being a revolving door until somebody proves themselves.

as a huge player on offense, dude has nice hands. and he blocks well, probably better than todd heap ever did. dickson will cause match up problems, i’d really like to see some 2 tight end sets with those guys in the game

by handlogten on Aug 7, 2011 5:49 PM EDT reply actions

Dickson is the better athlete, tougher matchup, and better downfield threat due to his speed and smooth transition to run after catch. Pitta I think may emerge as a bit of a red zone specialist though.

When I was at the castle, the offense was really struggling and the defense was taking no prisoners.

The scheme looks much like the scheme from last season. Although, I did notice that the offense was attacking the middle of the field much more… especially the seam with Dickson. Boldin was also finding holes in the coverage, and Joe was hitting him in stride on several passes. It looks like Joe and Boldin have good chemistry.

It was so hard to watch though, because the offensive line was getting man-handled on nearly every play.

by BAL_Hawk on Aug 8, 2011 8:44 AM EDT up reply actions

Yeah I heard the line got demolished, but I heard Reid did fairly well. Is that true?

Reid looked strong, but he was really struggling with consistency versus Johnson and Jones. He was certainly one of the better offensive lineman on the field, but the center and RG were so bad that it made it hard for Reid to really impress.

On a side note… the combination of Ngata and Cody looks to be as amazing as we all were hoping. There were a couple occasions were they literally put the three interior lineman on their backs. Cody was triple teamed at times but still managed to make two one-armed tackles that I saw.

by BAL_Hawk on Aug 8, 2011 8:51 AM EDT up reply actions

Love hearing that. I’m expecting big things out of Cody and was thrilled when we drafted him. If Cody becomes the player we think he can I dare teams to attempt to run at him and Ngata. How did art Jones, Jimmy, Kindle and Pollard look if you don’t mind me asking? Sorry for asking all the updates I just can’t wait to see us play.

How did art Jones, Jimmy, Kindle and Pollard look if you don’t mind me asking?

Jones was a force on the inside and surprised me with the inside pressure he was able to generate. He gave Jah Reid a tough time on several plays. He’s not a finesse type player, but he seems to consistently get inside penetration with a good motor.

Kindle looks very explosive off the ball but was beaten badly in coverage in 7-on-7 drills.

Jimmy Smith and Pollard weren’t active while I was there.

by BAL_Hawk on Aug 8, 2011 2:04 PM EDT up reply actions

Thanks. Sucks about Jimmy and Pollard, but great about the other two. We only need Kindle to rush the passer for now, so as long as he’s looking explosive that’s good news. I see why the Ravens were so high on Art Jones even though he didn’t really get any action last year. I really like the kid and hope he can be our end for the future.

I think Flacco throws a few less TD’s, but I think those yards are about right. I expect Boldin to do well and I’m not expecting one rookie to go off for a 1000 yards, but as a group I think they all help pull some weight. I think Hardy will have less yards though and you throw Reed in there.

no I just figured since the ravens were after Malcolm floyd who would be the numbet two if he came here the same would be with James Hardy

if he can live up the expectation that ozzie and John Harbaugh seem to express with there much interest in him. James Hardy has much upside probably more than our other wideouts because he so tall and not only that has good speed which I think is 4.44(thats the same as Torrey Smith).

overall the ravens/ravens fans been wanting to see a tall wideout on this team for years and if James Hardy steps up which is possible then he could easily become the number two and be our personal younger malcolm floyd

Hardy can’t even see the field in practice, and when he does, he drops passes. I think as of right now, LaQuan Williams has a better chance of making the roster than Hardy does.

I then found myself riding down I-83 honking my horn for no reason. These fans are killing this for me.

ravens usually have won the easy wons under haurbaugh:

locks: vs. SF,@ Ten, @ StL, @ Jac, vs. Ari, @ Cin, vs. Cin, @ Cle, vs. Cle, @ Sea,

possible wins: vs. Pit, vs. Ind, vs. Hou, @ SD, vs. NYJ

likely losses: @ Pit

10 wins is a lock, lets say we go 2-3 against the middle group, hypothetically we win at home against Houston and Pittsburgh (I think we will take the Jets also), That would put us around 12-4 or 13-3.

lol agreed. I think some people want a vet just because they are vets. The fact is our rookies are probably better than most if not all the vets out there right now. I’m not saying I’m against bringing one in, but I don’t think Mark Clayton or Cotchery is the difference between Super Bowl or barely squeaking into the playoffs. It’s just funny how a week ago we were Super Bowl contenders and now because we lost our 37 year old #2 WR we barely make it to the playoffs.

37 years old or not Derrick Mason made plays for the offense and so did Todd Heap.

I think its really serious that the ravens lost Derrick Mason/Todd Heap and I think its being way too optimistic to thnk Joe Flacco will be fine right away with so many new weapons. When the patriots got rid of randymoss did they put their inexperience guys out in the fire no they traded for deion branch which I beleive was a patriot before that was also their super bowl mvp in 2004 .Deion Branch has chemistry with Tom Brady and after that trade their offense was on fire and start looking like play off candidates after that

I dont care how old or injury prone people may say about Mason or Heap they was still Joe Flacco very productive go to guys besides Heap was having one of his best years last year and Mason was still highly productive with comebacks routes or not . It will take time for Joe Flacco to get used to his new weapons and I dont expect a immediate chemistry between the offense unless something change.

people think speed and etc makes a offense explosive but thats not all the way true but in fact chemistry is what makes a offense better. How can you expect anything to work at its best if there no chemistry? How can anything be explosive if everybody is not on the same page? How can any one expect chemistry that Joe Flacco had with Heap & Mason to be the same or better with Dickson,Pitta, Smith,Doss, Reed and etc. I know we still have Boldin but he is only one man and he going to need help.

And tell me how the passing game has worked out so far? There were too many times where our guys struggled to get separation and disappeared. Yes chemistry is important, but it’s not like they are going to go in with absolutely no chemistry at all. Our passing game has never been consistent, so why not try something different? We can’t get that much worse than it’s been.

I understand that but what did you expect with three wideouts that were the same.

I honestly didnt understand what ozzie was thinking when they signed Housmanzadeh; I thought keeping Mark Clayton would had been best because he had enough speed to go deep also give Mason and Boldin more room to do what they do best.

Donte Stallworth didnt even see the field like we all hoped but even still Anquan Boldin and Derrick Mason made plays. I know at times the wideouts didnt get much separation but at the same time did the coaches or ozzie put the right players in place to help that situation become not a problem. If ozzie knew speed was important to have on the offense why would you sign a player that doesnt provide such help but at the same time you cant blame the players for there lack separation because they were not giving help from a speedster to help them out.

That’s exactly why the young guys will help. You keep saying in your previous posts that speed doesn’t mean much, but now they had trouble separating because we didn’t have speed? We already have a great possession WR in Boldin, so the other guys will compliment him very well.

It sounds like you want a vet just to say there’s a vet. We have heard Doss has been great (except for the beginning of saturday) and that Torrey looked really good on saturday. So if we are hearing good things about them and nothing about Hardy, why does Hardy have a good chance to help us, but they don’t when they are clearly out playing him right now?

I beleive if he does step his game up it can be very benefical for the team because it would be nice to have more than one deep threat. If anything I have high hope for Justin Harper :) but Im not going to talk about him much until he shows something in the preseason or more in training camp.

nope dont feel like that at all and I dont think like that at all.

before the cut of mason and heap I thought the rookies and second year guys players would help much because it would not only give the veteran player more room to do what they do best but keep them fresh and the make the offense more creative.

This is Joe Flacco 4 year and for three years he has had rhythm with players like Mason, Boldin(well not really) Heap and etc. Now the rookies/second year players are in the picture which wll probably take Joe Flacco to follow some time to adjust to but we will see.

I have high hopes for our rookies but im very aware that our offense has lost some leadership/chemistry which is important especailly to young guys and I know we have anquan boldin but he is only one man and it would require more than just boldin to step up as a leader on offense.

If the rookies we have are as special as some have said than I cant wait for them to shut me up with the saying of we need a veteran starter then again Im not saying they shouldnt see the field but probably best in a limited role until prove otherwise

When was the last time they brought a guy in and said “hey this guy pretty much sucks but we need warm bodies so why the hell not?”

There is a big difference between being “special for this team” and being “special teams.” Only one of these is realistic for Hardy.

so we really have to balance that out. We have high expectations for him. He is a very talented guy

Joe is a very good deep thrower. Torrey also has the ability to be a returner. We can utilize him there, but he’s competing to be a starting wide receiver.”

Quote from Ozzie after drafting Torrey and this was with Mason on the team.

i wish you hadused that quote sooner

Ozzie’s input is immesurably more valuable than our own in this debate.

"Airborne, do not look at the ground. I promise you, it will be there. Unless the tectonic plates shift, and a chasm opens up on the drop zone, in which case we will surely let you know."

I mention Mark Clayton as the speed guy they should had kept

not just any type of speed guy. Mark Clayton had chemistry with Joe Flacco well atleast he knew the system and knew the playbook well enough. If speed is only thing that matter then maybe the ravens should bring back Yamon Figurs and let him be the starter he’s a veteran but you probably would say not and I know why you would say no.

I never said speed is all that matters and Figurs was nowhere near the prospect Doss or Torrey are. Just go back and look at his production in college. Doss and Torrey are guys who have skills that translate to the NFL plus great college production.

I dont think nobody ever said that a team with youth and inexerienced at skills

dont win games or that the ravens afre doomed to afcn inferiority. Speaking of patriots what have they dont so far in free agency I beleive they traded for Albert Hanesworth, Chad Ocho Cinco and signed Shaun Ellis also some other experienced players.

Why didnt the patriots just go with there young inexperience players theory like last year maybe becuase they fear there young guys wouldnt be at the level they wanted because of lockout already held them back from progressin or maybe they thought we need get highly productive experience players in here to go along with our young guys. Its not about jsut bringing in any veteran but when you can mix highly productive veterans to go along with some highly productive young guys that formula can take you far in nfl but also the young guys can get leadership from the veterans and motivation as well in most cases.

Or maybe because they had a good bit of cap room to work with without having to resign the best free agent OL on the market and the best nickel/dime CB on the market along without signing the best FB on the market.

They did something Ozzie was not going to do, give up draft picks for 2 head case players and sign an injury prone 11 year vet.

This Free Agent shit is so stupid and these fans are even more retarded. I cannot stand reading these comments and hearing what the jackasses on the radio have to say.

never have I once put my team down and ever said they wont make the play offs. never have I once said they wont win any games but just because Im not sharing the same optimistism as you doesnt mean im a debbie downer. I dont know what ozzie is thinking and you definately dont either but seeing how free agency has pan out and looking at my team now you cant tell me I cant feel no kind of concerns.

Im sure ozzie is a smart man and Im sure he will handle what needs to be done but as a fan im just stating my concerns and if im being too negative than excuse me sir that was not my purpose

jazz, you’re not the only one with concerns. I’d honestly love to see Torrey Smith as our regular 3rd WR. At this point though, there are few options remaining that I would consider an improvement over who we have now. I’d love to get Mark Clayton into the mix here if he’s healthy. Maybe not as an every-down #2, but seeing a lot of snaps regardless. Cotchery and even Housh would be good situational WRs that would see the ball at times and take some pressure off the rookies.

I dont think like that at all and I still think highly of my team. I think the ravens still can go to the super bowl but Im just aware of situation they are in now. I think there still some holes to be filled maybe they are already filled with the rookies but time will tell.

We ravens fans really dont know because this probably the first year we experience a training camp shorten because of the lockout

Because Ochocinco and Haynesworth are pro bowl caliber players who came relatively cheap. They have a history of taking guys with the label character issues and takes a chance on them to return to form. We aren’t talking about a player with that kind of potential anymore. Ochocinco will probably be the #1 there and their young guys will still play big roles. Gronkowski and Hernandez will see the field a lot and from what I hear they are expecting one of their young RB’s to get into some action as well. Like I mentioned in a previous post as well their defense at one point started 6 or 7 rookies and second year players and are expecting many of them to contribute as well. We aren’t asking anybody to come out and be Andre Johnson. All we are asking for is some decent production. We are not relying on them to win ball games, just make a few plays here and there.

we can say the team younger on offense :).

Hell, just cutting Heap, Mason and Bulger, I’m betting the team’s health insurance heart attack/broken hip premiums went down by half.

Wow... At this point in time, these are the cards we've been dealt

and the cards we’ve been left to hold. The remaining options out in free agent land, suck. We’re better off developing our own WR from recent drafts from here on out. We’ve obviously purged some of our older guys for a reason so may as well accept that fact. Maybe we won’t be as competitive as we’d like but then again some of these young guys might just surprise. Yes, we’ve done a poor job of drafting great talent in the WR position in the pasr, but who knows, maybe there’s a diamond in the rough right on our very team… Go Ravens. Eagles on Thursday! Can’t wait!!!!!!

Lee Evans?

Rumor is that he’s being shopped around, would he be a good fit here if he came at the right price?

I’m actually fine with what we have over any available FAs. We could use a vet with some red-zone presence, but there isn’t much to choose from. Depth is my next biggest concern, hopefully Boldin can continue to put the injury prone label behind him.

by Mayne_Event on Aug 7, 2011 11:09 PM EDT reply actions

He is a deep threat

That is what we need to compliment Boldin and whatever receiver they will insert as a #3. Dickson can also be used as a deep threat with Evans.

by TheShadow on Aug 7, 2011 11:41 PM EDT up reply actions

If by right price you mean a conditional pick then fine. Otherwise use the trade pieces to land a center or right tackle

by erniesto on Aug 8, 2011 12:02 AM EDT up reply actions

Lee Evans has the skill set to benefit us. He wouldn’t be cheap though. I’m def not getting my hopes up. I’m accepting who we have. I do feel like a veteran presence @ 2,3 or 4 would be helpful for our rookies. Believe me, Bulger was coaching Flacco up all year last year.

Honestly I feel like our D could be a top 3 Defense this year. If that’s the case they should be able to give the O some breathing room to get going (as always)

by Georgia Raven on Aug 8, 2011 1:50 AM EDT via mobile reply actions

By breathing room I mean pick up 2 1st downs a drive and at least make it to the 50 b4 you punt.

Lee Evans?

I don’t doubt his talent but he’s not that tall. I’d prefer to see a receiver show up in this town over 6’. And BTW, who is our backup QB right now?

Tyrod Taylor our rookie.

Dont feel good with current WR situation

Will the Ravens actually line up in the season opener against the Steelers with AB as the only experienced WR on the field? If so I can see the Steelers putting eight in the box and daring Flacco to throw it. I hope Ozzie has a Plan D for the wide receiver and back up QB positions.

Steelers always put 8 in the box against us and dare us to throw. nevertheless, ray killed them in 2009 in both meetings rushing and receiving, and that was just with mase and heap to throw to. but last year, ray sucked against pitt WITH mase, q, heap and others. So either pitt figured out how to stop him even though our wr corp got better, or our rush offense got less effective, something that leach should help with. i choose the latter.
