Experience wins out over raw youth.

How many heavyweight champs would knock out younger boxers with the same amount of skill and more punching power. Rope – A- Dope.

I'm not questioning anything

Then I mistook what you meant by it, my apologies. I got the “experience wins out every time” part, but I thought you were implying that its not always the best call, and that the McKinnie > Oher situation was an example of that.

"I hate your sig…" -Mr MaLoR

by StuckInUtah on Aug 24, 2011 1:58 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions

He was never questioning him getting the LT spot

Generally the veteran will beat out the rookie at a position, unless the rookie is vastly more talented or the team is looking to get younger at the position.

In our case we’re shooting for the SB now so the experience vet should start now to give us the best chance to be dominant NOW.

I brought him up in my Who's Out There article

Though I’ll be honest I didn’t give him much of a chance just because I wasn’t sure where his conditioning was at.

Of course his agent said he was in great shape, but agents always are saying that about their clients. I always thought he was a good player, when he was in shape and had his head on straight. I love this pick-up by Ozzie!!

Here's hoping that McKinnie goes back to '09 mode

If so, the Wizard of Oz could have turned us into a SB contender by giving us a huge upgrade at both the tackle spots!

by Mysterious on Aug 24, 2011 11:19 AM EDT via mobile reply actions

The problem seemed to be lack of motivation..

from the looks of it, he wants to play here. It may be a risk but you have to expect that Ozzie knows what he’s doing here.

Kind of funny that our weakest spot on our roster just a week ago, may have just become one of the strongest.

At the Vikes he was a franchise player with the pressure that goes with it. For us he’s a cheap veteran option that if he doesn’t fly straight will get the ax.

I think these two moves combine

To make them the best, Evans gives us the speed we need, but McKinnie gives Joe the time need to throw the deep ball for Evans.

As usual the O-line move will make WR and QB look better and more than likely they will get more of the credit than McKinnie and the O-line.

..(farve gets crushed twice by mckinnie’s guy. favre needs major off-season surgery).

 2. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WBh9SvWj2wk&feature=related
..(favre gets crushed by mckinnie’s guy, a rookie, on the opposite side!
.. favre’s career ova).

 3. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zrLnBWY_ga0&feature=related
..(favre gets crushed by mckinnie’s guy in 1.3 seconds. favre appears dead,
.. and is never the same).

 4. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0O9yos_1ktI
.. (watch mckinnie aimlessly stand around like a snowman as joe webb makes
.. people miss anyway).

5. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8ZZivl5iKCo&feature=related
.. note the multiple holding penalties, actually, i think that is also "illegal contact".

6. plus, he showed up to camp today and got put on the non-football injury list…
…cuz he is fat and out of shape.

by Evan Skev on Aug 25, 2011 11:51 AM EDT up reply actions

Could McKinnie implode and become a total bust? Sure, but I don’t think Ozzie would have signed him and told him he’d be on the left side if he was completely useless. I’m going to trust the judgement of the FO on that one.

I think the whole needing to get “into” shape was blown out of proportion by the media. Was he overweight? Yes Was he nearly 400 pounds as reported? If being in the 350-370 is “near” 400 then I would say yes, but he wasn’t the 380-390 that everyone was saying.

As far as he rep, most of the really big stuff on his off-the-field issue list was 6 years ago so I’m willing to say the guy has turned over a new leaf.

The work ethic stuff that has been coming up about him I think is mainly due to becoming disenfranchised with the team he was on, strangely most of that starter two years ago when Chilly sold his soul to get Farve to come to the team. I think that whole fiasco wore of the entire team and McKinnie was done with everything.

A fresh start, with new motivation here with a clear Super Bowl contending team might be just what the doctor ordered.

But I was merely making the point

That as Steeler fan you generally are going to try to find weakness in the Ravens, just as we Ravens fans look for them in the Steelers. Because as fans its hard for us to admit that an opposing team doesn’t have weaknesses.

As such you’re more likely to take the pessimistic side of things with prospective players that may turn into good/great players for us because to do otherwise would be giving the Ravens the chance that they might have the talent to over take the Steelers, which as a fan of said Steelers you wouldn’t want to admit to bunch of Ravens fans.

Exactly my point

By having a more pessimistic view of our players and the impact they will have it then allows you to believe that the Steelers are the more talented team because if you took the more optimistic view like Ravens fans about our players you could see how we are thinking we have the talent to overtake you.

Because both teams are so close in terms of overall talent it basically comes down to how you view the players, in an optimistic or pessimistic way, that determines who you think of as the “better” team.

i take note of what’s happening and what’s being said…

What was happening…

1. Cousins was so bad the Ravens moved him to guard.
2. Reid was progressing slowly.
3. Oher was still having problems with false starts and protection at LT.

What was being said…

1. The OL was universally critisised for their lack of talent at tackle and lack of depth.
2. Most experts were saying that the chances of beating the Steelers with the current OL were slim.
3. Harbaugh and Cameron both expressed concern over the lack of depth.

then i look at what’s not happening and what’s not being said…

Wow… I laughed at this point. I would like to know exactly how you examine nothing.

i process all of that info and compare it to what i’ve learned from living on my own for twenty years…

Maybe you have some special wisdom and insight after living on your own for so long, but it seems to me that there were plenty of reasons to worry.

Obviously, I probably should have trusted Ozzie more given his great record, but don’t act like you do all this “critical analysis” because Ozzie made you look smart. Plain and simple.

by BAL_Hawk on Aug 24, 2011 7:11 PM EDT up reply actions

Yeah Hawk I think your line of thinking and mine are very similar, we just arrived at different conclusions given the same information at that time.

I’m definitely not claiming to be a genius. Ozzie’s got that covered for me.

"Airborne, do not look at the ground. I promise you, it will be there. Unless the tectonic plates shift, and a chasm opens up on the drop zone, in which case we will surely let you know."

Thanks, jackmca.

If the conclusion is that Ozzie knows best no matter what, that’s great. That’s probably the best conculsion for fans. Like I’ve said, Ozzie has earned some blind faith and trust.

The problem I have is when people act like they had everything figured out and correctly analyzed the situation when all they really did was simply agree with everything Ozzie did.

I really hope this is all for real.

If McKinnie passes his physical and is able to play at his former level, I don’t see any significant holes on this team. We are stacked with legitimate weapons and pretty much every position and we have quality depth everywhere, Qb being the only possible exception. The only issue this team will need to overcome is gaining experience for the young guys and obviously avoiding injuries (but every team has that issue).

Ozzie and co. will have some very tough decisions to make when selecting the final roster, but when that’s your biggest concern you know things are going to go well.

agreed. We all thought the line and pass rush were going to hold us back big time. The pass rush has looked as fierce as ever and if McKinnie can re-gain his old form our offensive line could be the strength of our team. That gives us a pro bowler at every position on the line other than Yanda who is our best lineman right now. I’m getting real excited to see this play out.

if you think mckinnie is a pro bowler, you are delusional.

he is the most underachieving player in vikings history. he was selected to one pro bowl and it was widely considered a joke. he rode the favre wagon to that selection, and then he got kicked off the team before the game because he was out partying and didn’t want to go to practice. he basically embarassed the vikings and the league. he is completely over rated, imo. and we still cut his fat ass.

Though you have been spouting negativity about something that is exciting for Ravans fans

As the saying goes, during the off-season everyone is a Super Bowl contender in the eyes of their fans.

I would liken it to someone from Florida State stalking your message boards to constantly tell you about how terrible Christian Ponder is as a QB, how he’s injury prone, etc, etc.

You guys wouldn’t like someone raining on your parade about a player you’re excited about and people here aren’t to keen on you doing it to us. McKinnie’s history is well documented for everyone here to find if they want, the excitement here is just about the potential his signing gives our O-line and by its very nature potential is always optimistic for people. That’s why before every draft fans go nuts for 7th round draft picks despite having never seen them play in the NFL, its the excitement and thrill of the potential that they offer to our team.

So don’t be completely stunned when people start getting mad at you as you go around spreading your message about how bad McKinnie has been in the past. WE GET IT, moving on…

that is not raining on your parade…wait, you are having a parade over this?

seriously, it’s better to know what you just acquired than to pretend
that you just signed the savior of your offensive line. join reality.

and i’m not stunned by the ignorant personal comments. but at least
the 2 or 3 people who haven’t acted like asses get what i am saying.

you know, we signed charlie johnson from the baltimore colts….wait,
make that the “indianapolis colts”, to replace mckinnie. he was a cast off
from that storied franchise (known as the indianapolis colts, did i say that?).
the guys on their board were pretty cool about telling us just what to expect.
because, when it comes to anything about the nfl colts, i talk to indianapolis.

and you know what? they were dead on right. he stinks and has been getting his butt beat practically every day. and we have a clear view of our o-line.

You’re right. I never really doubted Ozzie. I simply believed that we should have done certain things that we didn’t, and in my defense, much of what I (and others) were saying made sense given the information that we had at the time.

What we should take away from this situation is that… as you so eloquently stated… Ozzie knows best, and even if there are glaring holes/problems, he’s probably working on them and will find a solution better than we could conceive of.

That may sound like blind faith to some, but I say that Ozzie has earned some of that.

this is a complete 180 from what you’ve been saying the past week… you had a “sick feeling” that gaither would catch on somewhere else… that this time the front office had made a huge mistake…

“given the information we had at the time” is excellent politician talk but several of us categorically disagreed with you on your position regarding the FO and decisions regarding gaither… you were very stubborn in defending your opinion

come on dude… own up to it instead of using italics and really lol

by Evan Skev on Aug 24, 2011 2:36 PM EDT up reply actions

What’s your problem? I haven’t said anything that I’m ashamed of. I never made any guarantees. I never said anything that was personally insulting to anyone. I just called things as I saw them and tried to portray my opinions as clearly as possible. People on this site know that’s all I’ve ever tried to do. If I’m guilty of anything… It’s being too cynical.

You were condemning Gaither as a trash player and saying that he isn’t worth the time of day. I knew that he was/is a risk. I admitted those risks. My only point was that he was worth the risks based on (1) the Ravens’ extreme need at tackle and (2) the low cost of his contract. I still think that his contract was worth the risk… $700K is not that much even if he’s a flop.

At the time, I thought the front office had made a huge mistake. As it turns out, the Ravens found a much better deal with McKinnie, and it looks like they had a great plan all along, but how could I have possibly known that? I couldn’t have, and that’s the point. To believe that everything was fine at that point would have been blind faith. Because let’s face it… anyone who trusts in Ozzie regardless of the situation or circumstances has blind faith.

Just because Ozzie pulled through (again) doesn’t mean that there were never any concerns or that people who questioned the decisions of the front office are stupid for doing so. Obviously, Ozzie was concerned about the tackle situation as well because he went and signed McKinnie.

The lesson here is that Ozzie has earned some blind faith and deserves our trust.

You’ve exhausted my patience on this subject. I’m done. For the last time. LET. IT. GO.

and now we are right back at where we left off with an even better team than last year.

Im not worried about the defense Im sure they will be fine but im more worried about the offense. we look good on paper but we also look good on paper last year. Chemistry is a important factor when it comes to have a effective offense and I be looking for how the chemistry will be because the question still remains how will Joe Flacco operate with out his two go to guys?

I know some one will think Im crazy for saying that and may be thinking oh Jazz you just still in love with Mason & Heap but thats not case at all. I’m just going to be looking for how the offense operate in the regular season and to see how the chemistry develops.

I see what you are saying

Early returns have been promising with the new guys on the offense, but the main cogs in the offense this year (Boldin, Rice, Dickson/Pitta, Evans) seem to have good chemistry with Job so I’ll be optimistic about their chance.

In addition that group fits together better in terms of skills and complementing each other than the group from last year where Mason, Boldin, and TJ all played a very similar role in the offense.

Forgot to add Ricky to the list. Here it goes.

- No backup RB, which has been a very important role for us the last few years. We just don’t trust the rookies.

Now

- A RB who “gets it” and still has very fresh legs even at 34 years old. 2 years removed from a 1,100 yard and 11 td season.

I didn't doubt him, I simply looked at that situation and said, I hope we get this fixed.

People said we needed a reciever and got lampooned for it…Ozzie went out and got a reciever. People said we needed a more stable line and got lampooned for it…Ozzie went out and got a more stable line. As far as I can tell, the folks criticizing back then were right that the situation as it stood was no good, and the folks who said trust in Ozzie were right in that ozzie fixed things. We all win.

If this is true, I just hope Oher’s confidence is not completely shaken. We’re replacing an ascending player with a guy on the downside of his career, on the most important position on the offensive line. Hope this works out…

by JoshuaStein on Aug 24, 2011 1:57 PM EDT reply actions

He played better towards the end of last year, but obviously the coaches know more than me (and everyone else on here), so again, I hope this works out. Oher was a stud on the right side in ’09, and I am sure he can regain that type of effort.

by JoshuaStein on Aug 24, 2011 2:02 PM EDT up reply actions

I think his struggles at LT

May have messed with his confidence which led to his struggles as it got into his head. Moving back to RT where he was a a stud might be just what the doctor ordered to rebuild his confidence and take the pressure of the success of the offense off his shoulders.

We could easily finish the 1st half at 7-1. So could pitt. We need to be at 14-2 to win the division this year.

let’s wait and see if mckinnie can play…

as for schedule, it looked easy until free agency…

now TN got hasselbeck and AZ got kolb… the Rams look good and so do the Jets & Texans

I’d like to count early wins at home versus Pitt and on the road in TN and STL. We get the Jets at home this time so I think that’s a win for us. Then Texans, Jags, Cards, and our bye week before the game in pitt… I’m optimistic we start off 6-1 based on the change in defensive philosophy and upgrades on both sides of the ball. Of course, all of this is contingent upon Harbs&Cam getting the team ready and then going out there and attacking the fuck out of people… like belicheat does.

I doubt we need 14 wins to win the division this season… I think 10 wins the division and 12 wins the conference, based on pitt’s late bye week and their weaknesses at O line and corner. All of this is contingent on polamalu’s leg… if he isn’t healthy, they won’t win 8.

by Evan Skev on Aug 24, 2011 5:42 PM EDT up reply actions

I strongly disagree about the number of wins thing but I’m also not going to act like I’m the one guy capable of predicting an NFL season either.

its so tough to predict football wins… there is parity in the league and there is also change… that change foments wildly optimistic predictions… and wildly pessimistic predictions… what do we have? a greatly improved O & D? or a chemical mess waiting to explode

remember atlanta early in the season? they had a tough time with a crippled pitt team in week 1…eventually breaking down and losing in OT when spinderella broke a long TD run…

who knows… but I’m liking what our football dudes have done and im hoping that the coaches step up and show some nuts!

We have a rare chance this season with a schedule that includes eight games against bad teams, an early bye week and then ten days off after the Turkey Bowl.

If our men stay healthy and our coaches stay aggressive, we will compete for a 1 seed… if not, I will change my name to Lance Gaither.

This means we have to draft a legit LT soon

Because its a pretty bad indictment of Oher that we will pull a guy off the street who was cut and plug him into the most important position on OL. I know McKinney would have played this year without us signing him, but if the organization had any faith in Oher at LT, they wouldn’t have signed McKinney just to reinforce the RT by switching Oher there.

That’s one way to look at it… Or you can say they got rid of a player who had outlived his usefulness and picked up a guy who has started 130 games at LT the past nine years in order to solve their RT problem while keeping yanda at guard

I really dont think so because the ravens pretty much have another left tackle that has shown promise in Ramon Harewood. So far Harewood has look good in the preseason game and if he keeps it up then that will show signs that he can be the future left tackle for the ravens but will need time to develop.

I truelly think the Ravens have been in contact with Mckinnie the whole time since he got cut from the Vikes.

I think they monitored his weight to see if he was serious and he was part of the plan all along. Assuming he conditioned himself properly. This would make much sense as to why there were no rumors about him going to other teams. I mean I’m sure teams like KC and Pitt would have def taken a flier on this guy if Ozz didn’t already have his claws in him.

It’s not Mckinnies fault they’re gonna blow this year! If Ray Ray has this guys back then so do I… At least until he proves me wrong. I’m sure all that is needed is the proper motivation and to once again play for a winner. In 09 when they where good he was probowl caliber. As the team became the circus that is Brett Farve. He started to falter. Then. the lockout made him too sad to do anything but eat! Cuz he loves football and the Ravens so much.. :)

The Vikes are also a team that gave away a third round pick for Randy Moss, and then cut him a couple weeks later. Their personal moves seem questionable at best.

I’m sure Oz watched film on Mckinney from last year. No way he signs him if McKinney isn’t at least decent.

oh yea. that one was horrible. fans are pretty down on that.

and there were several other doozies that our fo pulled off the last few years.
the tarvaris jackson experiment, the brett favre show, anything involving childress.
but one of the biggest issues is that our team let the o-line go and now we are in
horrible shape up front. they couldn’t give the qb any time to drop back and throw.
this means that the receivers don’t have enough time to run their routes…and it starts
getting desperate, the pockets collapse, and our qb’s get permanently injured.

not to meention that adrian peterson is the greatest rb in the league, and they can’t run block for beans. peterson gains so many of his yards all on his own. it is sort of sad, because he could have a couple of 2,000 yard seasons under his belt by now.

plus, selling the farm for brett favre has set us back a few years on the qb front.

a major problem for us was that we used a zone blocking scheme with big slow guys….and it never seemed to open running lanes, just a few cracks here and there. ironically, birk left minnesota just after this scheme was implemented. rumor has it that he hated it, and that was part of the reason the home town boy jumped ship.

We are implementing zone blocking. I definitely saw it in the first two preseason games. Ant Allen runs really well in that style of blocking, one cut and get up field. Rice can run in any type of blocking, but he should be really good because it opens huge cut block lanes.

The only thing I question about this move is our OL’s size. Usually small athletic OLs prosper the best with zone blocking.

And our line is anything BUT small, and Yanda is truly the only athletic type. I hope they cleared this with Birk…

Thanks for the heads up.

well, i get the impression that the running back

has a lot to do with the success of a running play with zone blocking. they need to be patient and allow the hole to develop, recognize it, and then cut for it. they tend to create these cut-back lanes, and a good running back will seek those out.

adrian peterson is not very patient behind the line of scrimmage. he gets the ball and it’s like he is shot out of a cannon, and often times he just runs right into the backs of the o-linemen, then bounces and runs the other way! it’s not pretty.

in contrast, ladanian tomlinson is excellent at being patient and picking his holes and his moment of burst. the vikings got to see that first hand last year when we played the jets. ladanian looked like the wise master, adrian looked confused.

sounds like you dont know mckinnies track record… the only difference between Gaither and McKinnie is that Gaither flamed out right at the beginning of his career whereas McKinnie has played in 99% of games since he was drafted in 2002(?)

Remember that 2009 was two years ago and two years in the NFL is a very, very long time… especially for players in their 30s.

So don’t jump on the Viqueens fan because he knows what he’s talking about… McKinnie may be able to contribute positively to our team but he is definitely not the solution at LT.

true. i think he could be a real help to your situation right now.

and give you time to get a long term solution to replace him.

sounds like a bitter old Vikes fan to me.

It’s not Mckinnies fault they’re gonna blow this year

geez man did you really have to say all that if you cant say nothing positive then dont say nothing at all. The Vikings Fan just was stating his more the one displeasure opinions of Mckinnie never did that person say nothing negative about our team .

yeah I agree with Jimmy and Cary shutting down the other teams WR’s, they’ll make anybody rushing the QB look good - Jaz

your Top 5 tackle is riding a stationary bike in KC because he can’t practice…

the other four players were cut to get under the new cap and their replacements are all excellent players…

Ravens FO is damn good.

good luck to you all too… we just let mckinnie jr. walk out of town because he was a complete bum… those of us who understand the nature of the game and the weak mentality of some of the players don’t expect much from bryant… but if he does contribute, our O could be special this season

check back in and see if he is playing in a month
