I hope he dropped some weight…

I am sure he did. Ozzie wouldn’t mess around with that crap.

I’m not seeing this confirmed by anyone else. Though I like the move if its a cheap signing. If he drops weight and can get his head on straight, that is a ProBowl Tackle that we desperately need

Wonder what this means? McKinnie is a natural left tackle…

by JoshuaStein on Aug 23, 2011 4:51 PM EDT reply actions

So was Willie Anderson

 Malor-
No he wasn’t,. Willie Anderson was a pro bowl RT for his whole career,he only played the left side in his rookie year.

I’m sure we signed him, but I am waiting for Aaron Wilson to confirm this…he’s the best insider we have.

by JoshuaStein on Aug 23, 2011 4:52 PM EDT reply actions

Great, great move by Ozzie……once again. It seems like each and every week, he makes a move that brings people away from the ledge just a little bit more.

- Oh no, what are we going to do without LeRon? Oh, Leach works.
- Zbi isn’t ready to be the heavy hitter Dawan was, we are screwed. Dang, I like what Pollard brings.
- We have no deep threat!!!!! This offense is doomed. Wow, did you see Evan’s speed?
- Our O-Line is so screwed, Oher and Reid can’t get it done. Bye bye playoffs. Former pro bowl OT? McKinnie? Nice!

Hold on, man…McKinnie has had some serious weight issues recently, and his work ethic has been questioned. I acknowledge it’s a low-risk signing, but let’s wait and see what happens with the line.

by JoshuaStein on Aug 23, 2011 4:54 PM EDT up reply actions

Ok, so still “bye bye playoffs”?

I have never said that, dude…ever. And this move won’t make or break our season. In fact, if McKinnie is in playing shape, he will definitely help. All I am saying is let’s wait and see what he’s bringing to the field.

by JoshuaStein on Aug 23, 2011 4:56 PM EDT up reply actions

Wasnt everyone just bashing Gaither not too long ago for his “work ethic” problems. Now everyone is super excited because we signed a 400lb guy that got kicked off a crap team?

I personally like the move, but I just see a lot of people that were hard against Gaither now praising a move to sign a guy with legit issues.

by Mstevens_Design on Aug 23, 2011 5:01 PM EDT up reply actions

Right, that’s what I was saying. I didn’t bring up Gaither, but let’s wait and see what McKinnie has in him before we trumpet this move.

by JoshuaStein on Aug 23, 2011 5:03 PM EDT up reply actions

No my comment wasnt directed at you. I just like that when Ozzie dumps a guy that had a history of work issues in College, its the right move…. then when he brings in a guy with legit work ethic issues, its still the right move.

Just comical really

by Mstevens_Design on Aug 23, 2011 5:07 PM EDT up reply actions

Gaither got kicked out of college and picked up right where he left off in the pros… Shortening his career in the process.

He had to enter the supplemental draft and dropped way down there also… No one wanted him

You know this story well… why can’t you accept the reality? Jesus

by Evan Skev on Aug 23, 2011 6:00 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions

Jared Gaither is already hurt AGAIN in KC, and people see this as a complete coincidence. Maybe Ozzie knew something we didn’t? Hence the whole “In Oz We Trust” mantra…

Seriously let’s drop this.

BTW, McKinnie 2011 = Willie Anderson 2008. Good signing.

Gaither is no mckinnie… I think mckinnie has 8 solid seasons as a pro under his belt. Gaither never quite got it going in the pros

I’m not surprised but not excited until I see this guy is serious… At best, he is a huge upgrade. At worst, he is worthless… thats too big of a range for me

Of course, our GM is a Baller so I’m cautiously optimistic

And hawk owes me $1.50 :)

Gaither is no mckinnie… I think mckinnie has 8 solid seasons as a pro under his belt. Gaither never quite got it going in the pros

Im sure Gaither isnt no Mckinnie because unlike Mckinnie he never showed up to camp overweight more than once and has clear work ethics issues. Gaither work ethic issues are not as clear as Mckinnie and you disagree then please show me the sources that prove me wrong.

by Evan Skev on Aug 23, 2011 5:34 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions

I still think that it would have been smart to retain Gaither for the contract he signed in KC.

That being said, we need to let it go. If Gaither sits out the whole season and McKinnie starts for us, Ozzie will look like a genius.

I’m actually excited about what McKinnie brings to the table.

by BAL_Hawk on Aug 23, 2011 5:39 PM EDT up reply actions

My fault! I didnt mean to make this all about the G man. Lets leave this talk to about McKinnie.

by Mstevens_Design on Aug 23, 2011 5:40 PM EDT up reply actions

Gaither already failed one physical and is now unable to practice in KC.

You will never admit to being wrong about Gaither and that’s ok.

Mckinnie has to pass a physical tomorrow… until that happens it’s just a dream

by Evan Skev on Aug 23, 2011 5:50 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions

There’s nothing to be wrong about.

I still think Gaither’s worth the risk of a cheap contract, and I always will based on where we are and what we know right now. If he doesn’t pan out, the team’s out $700K. If he does, they have a potential Pro Bowl player. Low risk… high reward.

It’s really the same type of signing as McKinnie… except McKinnie is more likely to produce this season.

by BAL_Hawk on Aug 23, 2011 6:05 PM EDT up reply actions

Gaither has been out of football for two years

No one wants him… He can’t even practice

You’re really stretching

by Evan Skev on Aug 23, 2011 6:07 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions

Please… for the love of all that is good and holy… stop talking about Gaither!

I mentioned him to say they we should let the subject go.

Think whatever you want about Gaither, myself or whomever you please. I honestly couldn’t care any less at this point, but you need to let it go. It’s becoming very annoying.

by BAL_Hawk on Aug 23, 2011 6:42 PM EDT up reply actions

you said you still want gaither… unless i misunderstood… let me try to find it

and if you want to know what annoying is, find the two dudes who keep insisting that newsome is wrong and they are right about gaither… and how they want to bring gaither back even though no other team wants him and he can’t practice in KC…

that’s annoying.

by Evan Skev on Aug 23, 2011 6:57 PM EDT up reply actions

Gaither doesn’t have to sit out the whole season… He’s already failed.

Ozzie is a genius.. you owe him an apology

by Evan Skev on Aug 23, 2011 6:02 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions

I’m not surprised but not excited until I see this guy is serious

I completely agree with this statement. He can be phenomenal, but he looks like he has a discipline problem right now.

Gaither is no mckinnie… I think mckinnie has 8 solid seasons as a pro under his belt. Gaither never quite got it going in the pros

That isnt really true. McKinnie is known for not giving 100% and for frequently showing up out of shape. Gaither has injury issues, but he never ballooned up to 400lbs either. I think that if Gaither had work ethic issues, then McKinnie is no better in that category. However, McKinnie has stayed relatively healthy in his career, so if he can get his head on straight, he’ll be great here with us.

A good, no to low risk signing.

by Mstevens_Design on Aug 23, 2011 5:39 PM EDT up reply actions

I think in 09 when he was invited to the pro bowl Mckinnie didnt practice at all before the pro bowl game and he was fined by the nfl for that also he didnt play in the pro bowl game

Though in his defense

He later came out and said the reason he didn’t practice was due to an injury (ankle?) and he claimed to have told his O-line coach why he wasn’t there.

Not saying its true, but just bringing up his side of the story.

At least McKinnie isnt a fag who would rather fake an injury than start at RT. At least McKinnie actually wants to play! Maybe he won’t be ready by week one, but if he can start for us by the bye week, I will be praising this move!

by Rayisyourdaddy on Aug 23, 2011 7:23 PM EDT up reply actions

If McKinnie is in shape or can get in shape before the season starts, Ozzie will look like a genius… as usual.

I’ve read several reports saying that he’s lost a bunch of weight since he was released three weeks ago. Since the Ravens signed him, I’m much more inclined to believe those reports.

If they gave him an incentive-rich deal, he could be a huge steal for the Ravens.

Honestly McKinnie is a savior if he is in shape. He can play either LT or RT. I love those guys that can float between positions pretty well. That way, you don’t need to have nearly as much depth and it gives us options. Imagine a goal line formation with McKinnie as the LT, Cody and Ngata as TEs on the left side and Leach leading Ray Rice…… that is going to be impossible to stop.

im not being condescending but i am critical of your criticisms of one of the top organizations in the league.. you have no idea what you’re talking about when it comes to the ravens handling of gaither… they have been spot on and you criticize them

by Evan Skev on Aug 23, 2011 6:34 PM EDT up reply actions

yeah with each passing day that Gaither doesn’t practice it looks more and more like Ozzie knew what was up.

I’m not “pumped” per se but I expect McKinnie to get into playing shape and produce at RT while Oher continues to mature at LT, albeit with some continued troubles along the way. But with Yanda and McKinnie next to each other and Leach lead blocking, we can officially run the ball to the right.

If McKinnie produces for the duration of this short-term contract, this was a success.

If Bryant Mckinnie can play at his pro bowl left tackle form then that means Micheal Oher can return to the right side and become the pro bowl right tackle that we all hoped. Mark Levoir is big but to say he is starter material is not clear because he’s been a back up right/left tackle mostly all of his career

Wow, you guys are a little dense. Shadow’s exact words were “It mean Oher will have to compete for his job. This is not a gimme like at the beginning of the season”. That is in reference to the LT spot.

Bash the guy for something he said, not for some words you are putting in his mouth.

Oher doesn’t have to compete for a job

If McKinnie comes in here healthy, yea he does. Oher will have a hell of a fight with a top tier LT and could very well get pushed back to RT. That would be losing his job or at the least a demotion.

by Mstevens_Design on Aug 23, 2011 6:45 PM EDT up reply actions

Now if he does come out and say that Oher will have competition for the RT spot, I can see you bashing him on that comment at that part of the thread.

If Levior comes in healthy and plays to his potential and doesn't false start

He could win the right tackle position. We are looking to protect Flacco first and run block second. The guy is 6’7" and 310lbs, and hopefully has a decent wingspan. To me that is a pass blocking tackle.

If connect the two statements it give me the idea that shadows thinks not only will he have to compete for his left tackle job but also for his right tackle job by going up against Mckinnie(left tackle) and Levior(right tackle)

Right, and that’s what makes him an idiot. He hates the team, and will say anything to express those feelings. Oher will either start at left or right tackle. He won’t be on the bench at all, barring injury.

by JoshuaStein on Aug 23, 2011 6:36 PM EDT up reply actions

I don’t think they’ll immediately switch Oher to RT.

They’ll probably see how McKinnie looks, and if he’s in good enough shape, they’ll allow him to compete with Oher at LT… much like they were trying to do with Gaither and Oher last season. If McKinnie is anything like he was in Minnesota, he should win the competition, but don’t expect the Ravens to just hand the job over to McKinnie, especially with his history.

by BAL_Hawk on Aug 23, 2011 5:43 PM EDT up reply actions

Oher at RT

There is no competition. If Oher wants the starting RT spot, it is his. LT, if McKinnie can provide any production at all, well that may be a different story.

Once again

Oher will be competing against someone at right tackle who is built for that position. He is 6’7", which should give him a longer wing span for blocking. The main thing is to protect Flacco, not worry so much about run blocking for Rice. We brought in Leach for that.

I don’t really see anyone challenging Oher in the slightest for the RT spot if he gets moved there. If McKinnie isnt ready to play and goes to the RT spot, then there might be some competition solely because big boy isnt 100%.

But Oher on the right is a beast that is among the best in the league. LT is more about the physical traits (wing span, etc) and RT is more about being aggressive and getting in their face, which Oher does well.

If McKinnie is in shape and shows any resemblance to his Pro Bowl form, then we have a guy who can anchor either our LT or RT position. If he isn’t in shape or doesn’t show that he’s ready to get to work, then he’ll ride the bench or get cut. This is as low of a risk as you could hope to take with a former Pro Bowler.

So just like any signing at this point, I ask...

Whose roster spot does he get? Are we going to go into the season with 5 tackles on the roster? Oher, Reid, LeVoir, Harewood, and now McKinnie? Add in Birk, Grubbs, Yanda, Cousins and Mattison, and you’ve got prett good depth, but does this signal the end for a 3rd TE, 4th RB, 6th WR, 6th CB, or one of the many worthy LBs?

I think it's an honest question...

I trust that Ozzie wouldn’t sign McKinnie if there wasn’t a good chance he was healthy and in shape and able to help the team. But if it doesn’t work out like that, a guy like a LaQuan Williams (who everyone here seems to love) or a Chykie Brown (5th round investment, lots of potential) might end up on the practice squad and be signed away by another team.

With the recent new signings, I think we have around 60+ players who should probably earn a spot somewhere in the NFL in 2011. I realize that we’ll get the best players from that group, and in all likelihood McKinnie is an upgrade that makes this team better even without whoever’s spot he takes. Still, it’s a decision the front office guys will need to make in the very near future.

great post… the thing about an offensive line is it can make your QB look like a pro bowler… or it can make him look like a rookie. The extra 1.5 seconds a solid O line will give to your QB is major… having experienced tackles next to experienced guards net to an experienced center is the second most important part of a successful offense.

mckinnie may not be the answer… or he may only be the answer for a season… who knows… but it’s a very solid move and a risk that had to be taken

and they say gaither had issues
the talent is there for McKinnie to be the Ravens’ short-term answer at right tackle — or maybe even left tackle — but there are a few reasons why the soon-to-be 32-year-old was still on the free agent market.

For one, he has been charged in three different incidents since entering the NFL in 2002, once for a street fight, once for a bar fight and once for allegedly performing and receiving sex acts in public in the infamous Vikings Loveboat scandal in 2005, when a bunch of players went wild on a boat with strippers and sex toys.

He also was cut by the Vikings this summer for showing up to camp in awful shape, reportedly more than 50 pounds overweight (no word on how much excess weight was edible underwear).

All these incidents — even something as simple as skipping the Pro Bowl — make you seriously question McKinnie’s dedication to his craft. I can guarantee you this: If someone says this guy plays like a Raven, they’re lying to you.

Yea, it definitely would have been better to sign Gaither and take the risk because it would have been SO swell when we waited for his back to heal, it doesn’t, then we are faced with our current starting OL. For some reason, the people who wanted Gaither think his back is magically going to heal in 2 weeks and we would have our LT back. Ozzie wasn’t taking that risk.

I will take McKinnie’s chances of losing 20-30 pounds over Gaither’s chances of getting a straight spine.

Cap hit is $250K for the bonus + 2011 salary… I’d guess the cap hit is about $1.2M for 2011 and we’re under before getting Ngata done

The Ngata deal is going to be large… Hes our franchise on the D side

I wouldn’t mind Tatupu. He was a 3 time pro bowler and an all pro on a defense nowhere close to ours. Was there a rumor of this?

Oh ok, but yeah I wouldn’t have minded him. I brought him up when he was first released as a player I really like.

Just ideas

After all the come-from-behind signing Ozzie seems to make, picking up a young MLB prospect that is just sitting in FA seems to be right up his alley.

I do love this Mckinney signing though. low risk, potential high reward. We don’t have a ton of cap room, so his contract can’t be very big. If he can get back to form this could be a huge signing. If he can return to close to his LT form then this could give us a potentially dominant line. I’m not getting my hopes up yet, but it’s definitely a great signing.

2 years 7.5 million, 1 million guaranteed. pending his physical. not a small contract.

If the signing puts them over the cap

they have 24 hours to get back under. Maybe this means the Haloti deal is almost done.

It’s all incentives… If he passes the physical he gets his signing bonus… If he makes a great impression he will make the roster and we’re on the hook for his 2011 salary… We can reasonably assume its mostly incentives

This is a two week tryout… If hes ready to work then he’s in the right place… If not…

yeah 1 mill guaranteed is not much, especially if they put him at LT. That would be an extremely cheap LT and still not bad if we play him at RT. If he earns all that money that means he was in shape and obviously earned it.

Hopefully he passes. Flacco truly needs him bad, especially if he is going to take the next step.

I hope so as well. He is only 2 season removed from a pro bowl and if he can re dedicate himself it’s a win win for both of us. Will definitely be a very interesting story to see how it plays out.

Flacco is fine either way because the run game is strong… No one knows if big snack is still capable and minny fans hate him as much as most of us hate Gaither… He let them down

Hopefully he wants to work here… Could be special

Agreed he will be fine either way, but could you imagine if Joe has time with some of the young weapons. Like I said he’s only 2 seasons removed from a pro bowl, so the ability is there he just needs to get dedicated again.

Well at least then

McKinnie will be used to his line calls if he starts.

When asked if the Ravens have told him what his role will be, McKinnie responded, "Yeah they told me.

"I’m going to play left [tackle]."

He then added that Michael Oher would move back to the right, a position Oher played well during his rookie season.
