Ray Lewis To Retire If Ravens Win Super Bowl

Baltimore Ravens linebacker Ray Lewis has stated that if when the team wins the Super Bowl this season, he will make the decision to finally hang up his football cleats for good. In a story noted on Pro Football Talk, Lewis said his run needs to come to an end at some point in the near future and a second ring would be a great way to end it.

However, PFT mentions that the Ravens are currently 14-1 odds to win the Super Bowl, so they say odds are that Lewis will be back for at least one more season in 2012. Lewis' son will be a junior in high school this year and he'd like to be at some of his games and he goes on to say the only reason he is sticking with the NFL is to win that elusive 2nd ring.

While I would love to see #52 in purple and black at least one more season after 2011, if the Ravens win it all and Ray-Ray decides to end it on the field hoisting the Lombardi Trophy, then so be it.

When I saw Jerome Bettis retire after XL

It was the best moment of the whole thing. You feel so invested in a player, you want that prize for them. Hines Ward was planning to retire if the Steelers won last year. You hate to see them go, but there is no better way to lose them.

As much as I hope you don’t win, I also hope Lewis retires. So I am torn, but I can understand the sentiment of wanting him to go out on top and I respect him for being open about this.

My assumption this year has always been that this might be Ray’s last season. If I recall correctly, the way his contract is structured makes it likely he is cut after this season anyway. No source on that, just my not-so-perfect memory.

This is one reason why I’m a little disappointed in our offseason so far. While I believe we’ve collected a solid young core moving forward, I; worried that we have done so at the expense of being primed for a serious SB run this season. We will still be good, I just don’t see us getting past the other AFC juggernauts with this squad. If Ray can play beyond 2011, I hope he comes back. In either case, it would be nice to see him go out on top. He deserves it.
