Steelers' Hine Ward Arrested For DUI

DEKALB COUNTY, GA - JULY 09: In this police mug shot from the DeKalb County Sheriff's Office, Pittsburg Steelers' receiver Hines Ward poses for a mug shot, on July 09, 2011 in DeKalb County, Georgia. According to reports Ward was arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol. (Photo by DeKalb County Sheriff's Office via Getty Images)

Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver Hines Ward should have been on top of the world. His team had just won the AFC Championship, gone to the Super Bowl (and lost) and on top of it, he was this season's winner on TV's Dancing With The Stars. Even with the NFL Lockout, this should have been a time for Ward t relish in the positive publicity.

Unfortunately, Ward could resist the opportunity to have just a little bit too much fun. As former head coach and current NFL analyst Herm Edwards once said, "nothing good happens after 2 a.m." Early Saturday morning, Ward was arrested in Georgia under suspicion of driving under the influence. The time listed on the police report was 3:41 a.m., further confirming Edwards' quote.

According to NFL.com, Ward was released on bail in the amount of around $1,000. While Ravens fans should acknowledge that not even our places have been known as perfect citizens, it is surprising that the supposedly squeaky clean Ward would get himself in this sort of predicament. Ward certainly isn't an honor roll student on teh playing field, if you ask his opponents.

Whether or not this incident results in a suspension for even the first game of the 2011 NFL regular season remains to be seen. That first game, in case you've forgotten, is here in Baltimore against your Baltimore Ravens and I'm sure all Ravens fans would be very disappointed if Ward were unable to play, much less his best friend in purple, Ed Reed.

Pac Man Jones got locked up for a bar fight last night.

From what I’ve been reading, he blew well under the legal limit which leaves it at the cops discretion if he wants to pursue a DUI charge. But I imagine with any lawyer that Hines can afford, it would be surprising to see these charges stick. Sigh…… it would’ve been nice if he had missed the Week 1 game.

I don’t want him to miss week 1, because then after we beat them 41-6, they won’t have they won’t have the excuse that Ward didn’t play.

Flacco's first 3 years vs. Brady's, Manning's and Brees' first 3 years

Flacco threw for just 21 fewer passing yards than Brady and tossed four fewer interceptions. Flacco threw for 1,655 more yards than Brees, two more touchdowns and four fewer picks. Manning, who averaged 88 more passes per season, threw for way more yards and touchdowns than Flacco, but also tossed 24 more interceptions.

I’m right with you Malor and that’s what I said yesterday. Even though they will make excuses still, I want them at full strength when we play. I really believe we were just as good of a team as they were last year, but I think we made more impacting moves in the draft, as well as have more young guys and guys that were injured ready to contribute more this year.

everyone has made "impacting moves" in the draft

its kind of absurd just to think the raVens are the only team in the division that has made any progress. What impacting moves have you made that makes you think that your team is ready to go over the hump? Flacco has the ability to audible when Polamalu is creeping up on the line?

We drafted a CB, who is looking like he may start immediately and although I’m sure he will struggle at times he is the most talented CB on our team. We drafted a speed WR who probably won’t start, but could at least stretch the D and add some big plays here and there similar to what Wallace did for you his rookie year. You guys added Heyward who probably doesn’t see a whole lot of time this year, Gilbert could potentially, but Ben doesn’t really need a great line anyways and then some project CB’s. That’s why I think we have guys who will have more of an immediate impact this year in the draft. Then we return Foxworth who was our #1 CB, Cody looks like he will take over the starting NT at some point, Kindle was medically cleared ( not really counting on him), then also Zbi may take over the starting SS spot where Landry was clearly a weakness in coverage. I think your team is basically set as far as starters, while we are upgrading multiple positions on a already good football team. I’m not expecting our rookies to be pro-bowlers right out the gate, but I do think our rookies have a lot greater impact this year then yours.

thats fair

but the Steeler way is not to have rookies out there playing from Day 1 especially on defense. You have no idea how they will adapt to the pros. Wallace did put up great number as a rookie but he was mostly facing 3rd or 4th cb’s in his rookie year. He is no flop as in his second year the competition got better and he posted better numbers. The only other exception would be Pouncey but he played offense albeit on a tough position on the Oline.
Hood only saw regularly playing time once Smith went down. and he is a first rounder ready to go as a seasoned pro. Heyward will only probably see time on the field as a second teamer. Gilbert really is a backup at this point and noone is crossing their fingers in having him start. Now the only part i worry about is the CB’s because Taylor is a free agent and after him is a big dropoff, but not as big as everyone makes it out to be.
And really Cody? Will he be able to be a 3 down lineman?
Will Jimmy Smith be able to run with Mike Wallace? hope this lockout ends to find out

That’s what I was getting at is you don’t have too many rookies get a whole lot of playing time. We don’t either, but Jimmy is very talented and sounds like he will and Torrey will probably be the #3 WR. I actually think we keep Webb on Wallace. Webb did an amazing job on him last year and I don’t see any reason to change it up. I see Jimmy guarding Hines. Cody is probably not a 3 down lineman, but looks like he has lost a considerable amount of weight and that should help a lot. We are pretty deep at NT with Gregg, Cody and Mckinney, so I’m sure we rotate to keep a fresh body in there. I definitely am looking very forward to week one.

You guys have plenty of talent

and plenty of issues..

Your corners are the worst in the division and your O line is a mess… where will Colon go? Is Gilbert another Pouncey? Of course he’s not…

Did you draft the correct Texas CB? Will Wallace be able to produce now that he’ll be the focus of your passing game? Aaron Smith and Troy Polamalu… Smith seems to be done.. is Polamalu right behind him?

I don’t know… lots of question marks. I see a painfaul season coming up for you guys

by Evan Skev on Jul 11, 2011 12:42 PM EDT up reply actions

lol

Dude, you see a painful season coming?

Well first define what painful means. One of your prose is laugh. Is Troy done? You mean after a year that he was injured half the year and still won the DPOY? Even if you don’t think he should have won, he played well enough to be considered and now you are saying he may be done? Really? Think about that for a second man.

As far as the Wallace deal, in case you didn’t notice, Wallace was the focus of our passing game last year, drawing the top coverage from defenses after the first three weeks. Wallace can hold his own whats even more dangerous is Emmanuel Sanders and A. Brown; those two guys showed that they can ball and will only get better. The WR group will be much better than last years even if our sleeper Sweed still proves to be a bust. If he somehow has a breakthrough season then its really trouble.

As far as where colon goes, thats a legitimate concern but we’ll most likely lock him up. He won’t be able to command a big pay check because of his injury and there are going to be a lot of other options out there. I honestly think we keep Ike too but he is the most likely to go.

If Smith is done, he isn’t, there is always Hood right behind him. I wouldn’t say a player is done until he can’t get it done on the field. When Smith plays he is a beast, until he starts to slow down when healthy then don’t count him out. He’ll be healthy Week 1 and Troy will too, thats all I know.

As far as the Texas CB, that is another legitimate question, no one knows how draft picks will pan out and we haven’t had much success recently with corners.

So we really have two legitimate questions, Will we sign Ike and how will our rookies do. That is extremely well, sorry to bust ya bubble.

I love the Steelers.

sleeper sweed?

did you just wake up?

you have O line issues, CB issues, and health issues with two of your stars, not to mention your QB issues…

go have lunch… come back and let’s talk

by Evan Skev on Jul 11, 2011 1:28 PM EDT up reply actions

I'm on the East coast

already had lunch.

O line issues? We’re getting better in that department. I’m not worried about the Oline.

CB issues? Thats an area that worries me but if we sign Ike; I’m not worried.

Health Issues? Everyone has health issues, and one of our stars is still DPOY while hurt, so color me not worried.

QB issues? I’ll take our QB ‘issues’ over the QB issues of the other 28 teams in the league.

I love the Steelers.

by tannofsteel84 on Jul 11, 2011 1:42 PM EDT up reply actions

There are 32 NFL teams and Sweed is not a sleeper...

Your only good corner is Ike… your O line is a handicap

by Evan Skev on Jul 11, 2011 2:58 PM EDT up reply actions

I know

how many teams there are in the league…. smh you don’ think I said 28 for a reason?

Like I said the oline is improving, pouncey has another year under his belt, starks and kemo are decent starters and colon, if we re-sign him is a good start, the only missing piece is RG and the rookie gilbert will probably compete for that job right off the bat, we’re good on the o line, its not great but its going to be decent

Our corner situation is interesting, we really don’t know what we have because we have so many young players at that position but BMac isn’t terrible, he’s decent, he does what we want him to do. Ike is def. our best and we’ll be in trouble if we don’t re-sign him.

I love the Steelers.

by tannofsteel84 on Jul 11, 2011 9:41 PM EDT up reply actions

I will be very interested in your team’s plans if they don’t re-sign Ike. I just can’t see how they would go in with McFadden as the #1. I will give you he is a great tackler which is required of your DB’s, but he isn’t very good in coverage and would get picked on at times, which as a CB your main job is coverage. I’m sure you guys will figure out something though and it doesn’t really matter who your line is because Ben will hold on to the ball too long, break a sack and complete the pass anyways.

Mcfadden isnt a number 1

and Gay and company have noone that takes the number 2 spot. That is the only issue. Its important to resign Ike over Woodley at this point.

What’s your fans opinion on Jonathan Joseph? I think he’s a similar player to Ike who sounds like he is asking for the same amount of money, but is 3 or 4 years younger.

He would be great

but what you have with Ivan is, yeah he is 31 but he is in phenomenal shape. Plus he knows Lebeaus defense and what his role in the defense is. With Joseph there might be some growing pains in gettin him acclimated in his role.

what the qb issue?

the issue here is you defense vs our qb. When was the last time Ben lost to you guys? O line issues are a thing of the past and they are overstated. He won a Super Bowl with a worse set of guys that were unproven at that point.
The only issue is CB which I have stated before. Smith can retire and the team will have someone ready to fill in his shoes with Hood a first round pick who until last year saw regularly playing time. Wake up son

We don't "give away" games

and we damn sure don’t want anyone missing the game for any reason!

Take it how you can get it

ben missed the first game last year and ya’ll won, I don’t think you regret it at all him not playing. A win is a win. The Ravens is always tough and we’ve been very fortunate to win some of those games. I honestly don’t think Ward will make a difference even if he does miss game one. This is going to be his last year and he is just playing to get to 1,000 catches. If he can get a Super Bowl then thats icing on the cake but I think a lot has to go right for that to happen.

I love the Steelers.

As I understand it, first-time substance abuse offenders are rarely suspended. They go into a mandatory league-sponsored program, and are then put on a tight leash. I wouldn’t be entirely surprised to see Ward get a slap on the wrist.

not sure what we’re comparing the BACs and the corresponding punishments to, but .128 doesn’t sound THAT bad. It’s not like he gave any journalists that soundbyte of saying “over twice the legal limit.” Then you’re in trouble for real…

But again I’ve never really analyzed how these punishments are meted out.

What I meant, is that people were reporting that he blew a .046, which is obviously well below the legal limit. But it’s the cops judgement if he still wants to pursue a DUI charge. But now that we now he was well OVER the limit, not UNDER, it’s no longer a given that Goodell will just brush this under the rug.
