Ravens Looking At South Carolina CB

COLUMBIA, SC - OCTOBER 9: Defensive back Chris Culliver #17 of the Carolina Gamecocks tackles quarterback Greg McElroy of the Alabama Crimson Tide October 9, 2010 at Williams-Brice Stadium in Columbia, South Carolina. (Photo by Al Messerschmidt/Getty Images)

The Baltimore Ravens will be working out South Carolina CB Chris Culliver in a private workout. He is being looked at by a few teams and has seen his draft stock go way u based on the combination of his size and speed, as well as his versatility. Culliver entered South Carolina as a wide receiver, was switched to safety and this year played cornerback for the Gamecocks.

All this courtesy of the National Football Post. Culliver is not expected to be  first round draft pick, but is projected to be a 4th round selection and is graded more as a free safety than a cornerback, according to CBSSports.com.

Correct me if I’m wrong, but didn’t DeCosta mention something about steering clear of later round CB’s?

No, you are correct about that. He said the talent drop off after the 3rd round is so huge and that he doesn’t like to take CB with those 4-7 picks. This Culliver guy, I have seen reports of him going undrafted.

"If only Flacco could put up numbers similar to Matt Ryan, or maybe just improve his stats year-to-year, he wouldn’t seem like such a wasted draft pick. It’s as if a young quarterback needs to put up better stats in his first three years than nearly every other quarterback to play in the NFL to justify a first round pick." - Amp

OFF TOPIC HERE...

…but have you guys that run this site heard that we are scheduling a private workout with BLAINE GABBERT?? “The Sun” is reporting this. If this is true, why the hell would this happen??? Is the team done with Joe?

I think “The Sun” is awful, BTW, and I haven’t heard this anywhere else. They mistakenly said John Harbs was at Missouri’s pro day, when really it was Jim. Perhaps they are mistaking the brothers again?

ProFootballTalk is now saying the same thing, but I wouldn’t read into it to much. However, I wouldn’t be surprised if we drafted a QB in the late rounds, seeing as how Bulger will probably end up elsewhere (my guess is Arizona).

The Ravens scout every player, regardless of who we already have. I knew that all 32 teams were at the Missouri pro day, but a private workout does seem a little strange. I wouldn’t worry about it, Joe is our guy. Maybe it was just a way deceiving tactic by Ozzie and crew to get people wondering. Teams are scared of Ozzie and the Boy Genius (DeCosta) when they start throwing smoke screens like this, because they just know we are going to get a better deal out of them than they get out of us.

FALSE ALARM

Now Jamison Hensley tweeted that we aren’t working out Gabbert. I know he was relaying a “Sporting News” story which had included the Ravens in the list of teams setting up a private visit with Gabbert, but you’d think he would research it before posting on baltimoresun.com. After all, it was the “Sporting News” that mistook Jim Harbs for John. “The Sun” is awful…

Well, that’s that.

Back to Culliver...

Seems like a good speed/size guy to take a look at on Day 2…

I am intrigued by these defensive backs that have experience at both corner and safety, like Culliver. Versatility can’t hurt, especially in a complex defenses such as ours. I wonder, then, if we’ll consider taking Texas DB Aaron Williams at 26. He played corner in college, but some scouts project him at safety in the pros.

According to Nationalfootballpost.com, Torrey Smith is the 9th-ranked receiver now. That’s pretty cool if we plan on targetting Sherrod in round 1.

I can live with that.

They also have ILB Alex Wujciak ranked as the 9th best ILB. Like that!

I think we’re speaking the same language.
