Everyone including me has dreamed about having Nnamdi, Bob Sanders, or drafting Leonard Hankerson in the first round. But we have a few players on this roster that can serve as suitable starters.
The pass defense ended the season ranked 21st in the NFL in yards allowed per game and passing TD's allowed. Tied for 8th in the league with 19 interceptions. This season we were missing one guy that was a key reason in the defense being 8th in passing yards allowed in 2009. Domonique Foxworth, was a pick up in the 2009 off-season and was a great addition. Injured himself before the season began and is now ready to get back to work. Josh Wilson was signed this year and only started 9 games, but was only 11 pass deflections shy of the league lead of 28. If Wilson gets re-signed I have no problem with our starters. Chris Carr was solid this season as a fill in starter. The Ravens would be smart to bring him back as well. Lardarius Webb is a very athletic and impactful player but can still work on his technique. Webb with his injury behind him and this off-season to train, I believe will make an impact from any position. Therefore, although it would be nice to have a shutdown corner we don't need one.
Everyone knows that Dawan Landry lacks speed and tackling at key moments in games. Speed is his biggest achilles heal. For what he is being asked to do in coverage, he is not effective. In all likely-hood he will not be back unless Coach Chuck Pagano can find a way to use him in areas he can better contribute. Tom Zbikowski has 4.4 speed and is a decent tackler. More athletic than Landry and has filled in before as a starter in Ed Reed's absence. Reed has some years left in him and Zbi is a good player. It's time he is used on the field with Reed. I believe his speed will sure up that position and in time will be the SS of the future for this team. IMO we don't need to draft a safety in the first round either.
If there was ever a time where we didn't know how much Jared Gaither was worth, we know now. Joe Flacco's progression was partly slowed by the ineffective O-line play. His back hindered him from playing in the 2010 season. Good news for the coming season, he has been cleared by his doctors but is still waiting for the team doctors to have a look. Once the Ravens clear him I believe he will re-sign with us and head coach John Harbaugh will put him at the left tackle position. Therefore, fixing our problem at the tackle spot. Next season we will have to need a center to replace Birk but not in the first round of this draft IMO.
Sergio Kindle was supposed to be the guy to pair with Terrell Suggs but has been bad news after bad news. Still needs to cleared to play and with a head injury who knows if he will ever play. He could make an impact this season, but due to the uncertainty of him playing I believe GM Ozzie Newsome needs to draft someone this season just in case. Too bad for us, I don't think there will be anyone there for us take that is worth the 26th overall pick.
With all that being said, there are two positions that can be addressed through free agency or our first round pick. That is the DE position or the wideout position. Braylon Edwards could be a suitable option for the Ravens instead of looking in the first round. With there not being any standout DE's in free agency I believe that drafting a DE makes sense.
I'm sure you guys have other opinions, lets talk.
