Big Name Players Have Hit The Free Agent Market!!!
Recently there has been news that the Indianapolis Colts have released two time pro bowler safety Bob Sanders and The St. Louis Rams have released Safety O.J.Atogwe their most valuable player in 2008.The free agent market for secondary players should look interesting for teams that are looking for a player that could make a impact right away to improve their secondary. The free agent market currently looks like it will have big name secondary players such as Bob Sanders, O.J Atogwe, Champ Bailey, and Nnamdi Asomugha.
The Baltimore Ravens may have some interesting options to choose within the free agent market. Raven Fans what player you think the Ravens should take in consideration in signing to their team? Do you think that the possibility of such transaction can happen with the signing of one these players? Or Should the Ravens just keep their focus on the draft and worry about such things later?
The opinions posted here are those of the administrator of this blog and his loyal readers. They are in no way official comments from the team, and should not be misconstued as such, even though he thinks he could do just as well or even a better job!

I'd doubt you'd get 3/4ths of a season out of him.
1st week of training camp his knee will shatter and arm disintegrate from a wind sprint.

taking a chance on Bob wouldnt hurt unless you have a backup plan just in case
he doesnt work out but anything can happen Anquan Boldin was always getting injured in when he was a Cardinal but when he came here he was injury free
Just remember.
Bubble wrap everything then.
But yeah anything can happen, but his injures of the past will keep a few teams from biting on him.

That is exactly what I was thinking.
If you can get him for $5mil or less a season, then its a steal. Sanders, when healthy, is a cut shy of Reed and Polamalu, but still a game changer for sure. If he can split time with Landry, then he should be able to stay healthy for a full season.

I say
Pick up Champ Bailey and Atogwe. Bailey would be an immediate starter
and Atogwe would be a solid all round back up in the secondary, plus his cousin is a Terrapin!
I like Turtles!
I dont think its Possible for The Ravens to get Champ Bailey and Atogwe that would be
too costly. Champ Bailey is asking for a 40 million dollar contract from the Denvor Broncos I dont know how much Atogwe had when he was with the Rams but its wasn’t a little bit either

Why break the bank to fix what isn’t broken? I still don’t understand the fascination with signing big-name players to our secondary (or going with a first round draft pick) when it will be much cheaper — and will facilitate cohesion — to re-sign Carr (who will take a hometown discount) and Wilson.
Water covers 2/3 of the Earth's surface. Ed Reed covers the rest.
It would be nice
to get in a better all around corner like Bailey. Have them compete for the position and see who comes out on top. It would certainly push the younger players to do better and at the worst, you have Bailey (a ProBowl cornerback) to help out for a season or 2.
Now going all Jets on everyone, and signing any player that plays on defense is not the right idea.

I actrally totally agree with you on that I'm not saying that the Ravens should sign one of these
players but in fact it would be cool if they did. I mean Imagine if we had Ed Reed and Bob Sanders(healthy Bob Sanders) together on the field at the same time it would be really dangerous for quarterbacks to throw then.
Do we not want to take a shot at cromartie. He had his plays last year when he got beat but he was still better than what we had.

I didnt really watch how Cromartie play I seen some articles saying he was playing good
while Derrelle Revis out becuase of injuries but I dont really think he would be too much of a upgrade overall with ehat the Ravens have now.I really like the cornerbacks that the Ravens have now with Carr, Wilson, Foxworth, Williams, Webb and I think they all have potentials to become great cornerbacks in this league.
One thing that is important about this group is the fact they all share chemistry with each other, which makes communcation better, trust factor better, and etc. The Ravens could draft a cornerback or sign one through free agency but overall its not a need that needs to be address but could be nice to add depth for future cuases.
While I will admit that our secondary is fine as be, getting a Champ Bailey in here wouldn’t necessarily be a bad thing.

I’m not really looking at the secondary as far as free agency goes. I don’t get the huge fascination that we need a “lockdown” CB or another game changing safety to replace Dawan Landry. I thought that the secondary played well as the season went on and having Pagano as DC should help the group as well. He knows the players and their strengths. Signing a player like Nnamdi or Champ would hurt our cap in a very uncertain time and we would most likely lose both Josh Wilson and Chris Carr. I don’t think it’s worth it and both corners are 30 and older. Dishing out big contracts to them would be a mistake in my opinion. Let’s re-sign guys that are a bit younger and are improving. They also know our system which could be huge if a lockout does occur. Out of these players that you mentioned, the only one I’d take a look at would be Bob Sanders. He fits our mold of playing physical and smart. He plays like a Raven and I know the Ravens wanted to draft him in 2004 when he came out of Iowa. I think the Ravens could sign him on the cheap and see what happens from there. He’s a game changer when healthy and if you can get him for a lower salary, it could be a steal. If it doesn’t pan out, then at least you tried and it won’t hurt against the cap too much.
I think looking for a pass rusher is more important. Kamerion Wimbley, Mathias Kiwanuka, and Ray Edwards are players we should most definitely take a look at. We can have the greatest cornerbacks in the league, but if we don’t add to our pass rush, they will get burnt as well. I also think a tackle or center could be a position the Ravens look at in free agency.
Agreed
We need a pass rusher more than a corner and if we increase the pressure on the QB the corners will automatically look a lot better!

As far as safety,
both Zbi and ’Ruki can step in and be just as if not more effective than Landry. Also, Cary Williams is an interesting option as well.

Thats not a bad idea.
Move Zbi to SS. Draft a FS in the later rounds. Maybe we don’t need a corner or bob sanders. Just need a upgrade in speed at the SS position. Zbi knows the defense so he could be a possible fix.

Webb played a lot of safety in college, too small for SS but could he a good FS in the future.

I could see us drafting a more physical corner somewhere along the line, but I don’t think it is a major need at all. We would have four guys that could plug in and start. Cary is also an intriguing prospect because he is long and can tackle. A good pass rush equals a good secondary. Getting our pass rush up to elite level is the #1 priority. Losing Sergio Kindle was a big deal. We didn’t have any type of push on the other side of Suggs. I’m hoping Sergio can make a come back and that we can add at least one or two more pass rushers in the front seven. There are a lot of good pass rushers set to hit the market as well.

I love Bob Sanders and he has actually been my favorite safety after Reed, but don’t count on him to contribute anywhere. He is turning 30 this year and has had some serious injuries throughout most of his career. I would love for him to make a comeback, but he plays too physical to keep healthy and I can’t see him changing the way he plays because he wouldn’t be himself. For the right price I am interested in Atogwe because he had some decent seasons in St. Louis who hasn’t been very good overall the last few years.
Atowge
Would be a nice fit for us. If we lose Landry, which is very likely, since he is testing FA, and there are people better than him in this years FA pool. If we can put up the $ to reel in Atogwe, that is a hell of an addition, espically since he would be playing next to Reed. and is a great all around Safety
But Atogwe plays FS, not SS. He is a little undersized to play SS.

Didn't the Ravens make it to the Final 8?
You guys are in the same boat as the Steelers. You can’t sign a FA that’s a higher quality than one you have lost. Since I don’t remember reading about you guys losing any FA’s, I would say this is a waste of time.

I haven’t heard anything about the Final Eight Rule extending past the 2010 season, and I couldn’t find any information about it beyond that season. If the collective bargaining agreement ends on March 4th (I think), doesn’t that mean that the NFL teams are no longer bound by the restrictions of that CBA?
Water covers 2/3 of the Earth's surface. Ed Reed covers the rest.
Technically speaking
the CBA doesn’t REALLY expire for another 2 years. However, the point is moot anyway, since both the owners and NFLPA opted to cancel the CBA, nobody can sign anybody to any type of 2011 contract.
I’m pretty sure only tags are allowed right now.

Yup, but we could very well bring him back. Ozzie said that no one on this team will be released before March 3rd, so we will get to see this situation play out a little more.

Or the best solution could be that he takes a pay cut which may happen as well
I think Willis wants to be with this team only right now but I could be wrong
MCGahee looked lost a lot last year. He had his worst year of his career too. Some of that has to go to the O-line, but his footwork seemed questionable all year. I’d like to see us get a young guy with some explosiveness to complement Rice. A homerun hitter at RB could really improve our big play ability.
by MrPoopyPants on Feb 22, 2011 9:43 AM EST up reply actions
I think their was lots of tims where mcgahee was running the ball better then Ray Rice
when Mcgahee would get hot Cam Cameron wouldnt used him again he would just put Ray Rice back on the field.
Resign McClain, find another fullback off the street (McCay?), and see what we can get to compete with Curtis Steele for that explosiveness.
Gash, Ricard, that guy that went to Atlanta whose name I can’t spell… Ozzie knows how to find a quality Fullback as there aren’t very many teams that utilize the position.
Parmele never did it for me running the ball… but he has special teams going for him so who knows.
Can the Ravens commit 5 roster spots to running-backs and fullbacks? Hopefully the new CBA gives us more roster spots.
by Mayne_Event on Feb 22, 2011 12:21 PM EST up reply actions
Agreed. Jets committed nine to their roster last year and got away with it. I think we manage five.
Ditto on Pamele.
