Ravens to Steelers & Texans: "Pull Over... We'll Drive!"
First of all, Congratulations to the Ravens (7-3) on a hard fought victory beating the Bengals (6-4) in front of the home crowd. The Steelers (7-3) and the Texans (7-3) have bye weeks so since we beat them both and in 1st place means we're back behind the wheel of the car. You know it may not have been pretty, but a win is a win, and now we will welcome the 49ers to town on Thanksgiving night. So now I just want to reflect on a few things before we move forward.
Balanced Offense:
I know we want to have balance between the run & pass especially after last weeks lost but we have to remember our opponent will know that too. So instead of being so obvious to that fact and start the game off with three consecutive run plays, why not throw the ball first? The Bengals was ready for Ray Rice so it wasn’t a surprise to them what we were doing that's why we went 3 and out. I think we could have a froze them for a quick seven if we had a play action or a trick play ready. Most importantly, we have to keep in mind to go with whats working in the game, off balanced, or not, it is what it is. The object of the game is to win, and if that means Joe Flacco may not throw as much or Rice may not run as much so be it!
Quarterback Pressure:
Why are we not pressuring these QB’s when we know they are going to throw? The past couple of games we have not given them enough pressure (like we usually do) & they are completing a lot of passes. It’s like at times we are playing too conservative on defense. These quarterbacks (rookies or not) need to feel the pressure and put on their backs. We need to return to that formula very quickly because it's successful.
Now I have to acknowledge the possible future tag-team combo in Joe Flacco & Torrey Smith. With Flacco’s arm and Torrey’s speed this could be a deadly combo to deal with. Just looking at the offense as a whole, Is it just me or should other teams be concerned? We have two veteran receivers in Anquan Boldin & Evans. (Boldin is one of the toughest S.O.B ‘s playing the game) Yes, we do have two rookie tight ends but look at them. Ed Dickson & Dennis Pitta are playing better than the league expected. Ray Rice is an all purpose back and proves it every week. Joe Flacco (The Iceman) is good and the best we've had at the position in franchise history. (the stats & records prove it) The league needs to prepare for a post season that we will set on fire because the puzzle is almost complete.
The defense is still doing their thing as well. Now while I don’t believe they are as good as the defense we had when we won the Super Bowl, (who does?) they can hang and will to the very end of the game. Ray Lewis didn’t play in our win over the Bengals but his presence was felt and known. It was kind of funny watching him on the sidelines because you could see he was itching to come in and play. The defense can still cause havoc better then majority of the teams with Haloti Ngata, Terrell Suggs, Jarret Johnson, Ed Reed, and Bernard Pollard. I don’t see any teams lining up eager to play against them and if they say they are..THEY'RE LYING!!! What I love most about our defense is the direction by Chuck Pagano. In meetings and interviews, he comes off more like a player than a coach, I think he is better to lead this defense than Greg Mattison was. So any team that want some, can feel free to always come and get some, but be ready for what you get!
Next up is the 49ers, and we have a few things out the gate working in our favor. They are traveling from West to East to play this game. They also played later then us on Sunday. Finally, they are coming into a house that will not be pretty for them to play in. I have to say, Alex Smith needs to come in and show me something because I’m sorry I just don’t believe in this second coming crap. All of a sudden he’s gone from being Kyle Boller to Peyton Manning? I think not! I want to see him put on the Alex Smith Show in Baltimore against us. Now while I’m not sold on Alex Smith, Frank Gore on the other hand could be scary. I believe it will be tricky, but we will somehow slow his game up. No doubt it will be a good game, and I’m eager to watch it. For Thanksgiving this year, I just want the turkey served up on the platter that day to be Jim Harbaugh’s 49ers!
Go Ravens!!!

Most excited for Joe Flacco vs Alex Smith
That will be the difference in the game. Now, of course if we see the offense we saw in a few games this year, but Joe has the ability to takeover a game like he did today at a few points and in others such as Pitt, Houston and Arizona.
I don’t think Smith will be able to takeover this game. If we win the turnover battle, we win this game. Period.
Flacco has to trust his receivers to make catches, but shouldn’t throw towards coverage. He needs to attack deep more often, but shouldn’t hold onto the ball so long. He needs to show more awareness in the pocket and move to extend plays, but nothing good comes of him leaving the pocket. He should run with the ball if nobody’s open, but he definitely can’t run with the ball.
Flacco should have the awareness of Roethlisberger, the elusiveness of Vick, the control of the offense of Manning, the leadership of Brady, the accuracy of Brees, and the arm strength of … Flacco? - Ampallang
what about if you win the turnover battle, but lose the special teams battle?

Frank I hate to agreewith you but we have to win the turnover and at least have a draw on special teams
I was just being a smart ass to MaLor
There are so many factors in a game, you can never say “if this happens then we win”
too much crazy stuff out there
And why do you hate to agree with me? Just because I like a different team I’m a horrible person?

I’m predicting the final score of this game will be 3-2…
I don’t know who will win, but that’s the final score.

it’s hard to find teams with crazier/more opportunistic defenses

Actually, these are two very similar teams
that have opportunistic defenses led by great ILB’s who wear #52 and offenses that are not prolific but wear down other teams thru a strong running game but can also throw the ball when needed.

I was surprised today. He took a sack that he avoided like four times last week. He threw it away EVERY time last week.
But still. It could be cool or bad to have a three team race for the division every year. (bad if you stress over football, cool if you love competitive football)

Dalton is definitely a threat
this guy looks a LOT better than most rookie QBs do. I dare say he even looks better than Bradford did last season (albeit with much better supporting crewmembers).
TO BILL BRASKY!!!
I have no reason to think he won’t be pretty good in the future, but I don’t think Dalton’s performance yesterday was anything to write home about. The announcers wouldn’t shut up about his accuracy as he threw 24/45 with three interceptions. Of those 24 receptions, several were circus catches or required a receiver to lay out to make the catch. He did this against a defense that had to respect the run. I’m sure he’ll be a thorn in our collective sides in years to come, but I didn’t think what he did yesterday was too far outside of the realm of what NFL fans have come to expect from rookie quarterbacks in recent years.
Water covers 2/3 of the Earth's surface. Ed Reed covers the rest.
State your case, back it up with facts and reasonable opinions ...
Bruce Raffel
I forgot to mention that several of Dalton’s big plays came on complete secondary breakdowns (and Smith’s first rookie mistake). I remember several receptions without a defender in the same ZIP code.

I also think you have to keep in mind that while playing from behind, and being essentially forced to throw the ball 45 times, his completion percentage was bound to dip as passing situations became more obvious. Of the 24 he completed, some of those throws looked pretty damn good to me.
TO BILL BRASKY!!!
I think the majority of his incompletions
came in the 2nd quarter (something like 6/16) when they were still winning. He was horrible in the middle of the game and a large reason why the momentum shifted our way.
You come at the king, you best not miss.

This will be the first time i wanted to watch football on thanksgiving. I see the 9ers offense like seattle’s. Gore can hurt us like marshawn did. Alex isnt a polished qb but playing well. They are going to run 65% of the time. When they throw we need to be ready. Ravens win 20-9
Green Bay vs Detroit will be a good one also.
We can’t expect Rice to have a good game (SF hasn’t allowed a rushing TD all year) so we will need Joe to get it done. If we can stop Gore and not allow Smith to go down field, which he rarely does, we will have a good chance.
Flacco has to trust his receivers to make catches, but shouldn’t throw towards coverage. He needs to attack deep more often, but shouldn’t hold onto the ball so long. He just needs 20 carries. If he has a big game or not he just needs to get those carries.

I’m expecting a monster game from Rice if he has the benefit of solid playcalling. The Bullshit where they keep him in the game after a 55 yd run is ridiculous. It cost him a TD and cost the team 4 points. Mind boggling.
If they mix it up and use play action, Rice will haves his usual 160 from scrimmage.
by Evan Skev on Nov 20, 2011 10:06 PM EST via mobile up reply actions
May not have cost him a TD,
as maybe Ricky punches it in on first down. Fresh legs against a tired Bengals defense. Although I did think a non-fatigued Rice scores on the 2nd down run.

by Evan Skev on Nov 20, 2011 10:20 PM EST via mobile up reply actions
I cannot imagine a reason not to pull Rice
after he ran 50 yards. Even if Rice didn’t want to come out. And if ever there were a time for a shitty play-action (like the one ran on 3rd down), it’d be when your feature back can barely move forward.

Totally agree and I went crazy in the stands
I constantly harp on the fact that I did a study last year where virtually every time Rice gained 20+ yards on a play they almost always gave him the ball on the very next play and he NEVER has gained more than 2-3 yards.
I used to say it was a perfect time to bring Willis McGahee in to face a tired defense from chasing Rice and now the same with Ricky Williams but for some inexplicable reason they almost ALWAYS keep a tired Rice in there to get virtually NOTHING on the next play.
I thought Ricky up the gut 2-3 times after Rice’s run would have gotten us the TD and instead three poor play calls cost us the TD, which almost came back t haunt us.
It was so obvious Rice was gassed as he should have outrun the DBs but got caught from behind because his short legs couldn’t spin fast enough to get the long TD.

Remember the broncos started 6-0 before they came to Baltimore… Same story.

One of the few things I'll agree with you on and I'm glad someone else notices....
The “KC Syndrome”. It was amazing last year all of the ridiculous predictions that they were giving. Running for 200 yards on us, or our D was going to be too old and slow to contain them. Just a while ago Bruce posted an article about a SF fans prediction for this game saying that they were just going to win….period. Nothing to back it up, just “we’re going to win”. Said it then I’ll say it now it’s like “Big Daddy”:
“Why do you win?”
“Because I win.”
This will def. be a great game to watch. Hopefully Ray will be in there so he and P. Willis can face of so to speak. Need to contain Gore as much as possible and get to A. Smith as much as possible. While he’s been good this year, it’s hard to dismiss that he’s been mediocre for the past few seasons and I doubt very much that a flip just switched and he’s now a “top ten” QB. Also, SF plays solid Special Teams, while this year, the Ravens have not. We’ve been losing too many field position battles.

I wrote about this somewhere else.
The main difference in Smith this season is he is not throwing interceptions. He also is throwing a lot less than in the past.
I’d worry a bit about Kendall Hunter, as he’s shown the propensity to gash some defenses. We rarely have had trouble with bruising backs (a la Gore), but we’ve had our troubles with the fast, shifty backs that can get the edge on us. As a mini-example, notice how much better Bernard Scott (9 for 40) did than Benson (15 for 41). CJ2K has also given us problems in the past.
You come at the king, you best not miss.

The run D wasn’t great today, part of that is because Ray was out, but I thought the other guys stepped up at MLB and did well. We’ve given up big games to guys before like you said….add Peyton Hillis to the list. But like Ray says, “even a blind cat finds a meal now and again”. Gore though has had an outstanding season thus far, and I hope we’re ready, cause he IS their offense. I may be mistaken, but doesn’t he have at least 100 yards rushing in every game this season? Thought I heard that but I may be wrong. Any ways, I’m sure we’ll game plan to take Gore away just like everyone else game plans to take Rice away.

It's all in good fun (for the most part) in my book....
Obviously we’re all passionate fans and get worked up sometimes, but most of my responses to you are mostly to amuse myself. On to the game….
I still see Smith as a game manager. Not someone who will make or break a team. Maybe he’ll find his groove, if he hasnt already, and continue to improve. But yes, like you said, it’s obviously coaching that’s the difference for SF this year. Jim Harbaugh has really turned them around and it’s impressive. They do have the fortune of playing in the NFC West but, that’s not soley how they’ve been sucessful. Like I said before, I think special teams will be a deciding factor in this game. They have looked great in that area and we have not…..not really one game can I say that the special team unit has contributed in a positive way in a game (no TDs, not great field position etc.) In actuality BAL and SF match up really well. Good defenses, great running backs, a few good WRs and TEs sprinkled in. I’d give us a QB advantage and SF a Special Teams advantage. This is one of those games that I would probably enjoy more if I weren’t a Bal fan cause I’m assuming it’ll be close.
Also, I think this is the first time this season that Bal is facing a similar opponent before Pitt does.

I honestly don’t know what to make of Smith. I kind of hate the term “game manager”. His stats aren’t stellar, but they don’t need to be with that defense and ri-god-damn-diculous running game.
At the same time, I still haven’t seen him carry the team on his back, but there is time for that.
About playing teams first. you will get Cleveland before we do as well. Steelers get them the thursday after you do. Then a week and four days later we get SF.
As i’ve said earlier. I can totally see this being a 3-2 game. Or maybe a 6-3…
I see it being a defensive battle.

I know I have some "problems" but....
Everyone on Earth is crazy in their own way and if they don’t acknowledge that than they’re in denial haha. I truly believe everyone has a little crazy in them, some are just better at hiding it than some others.
If you wouldn’t call Smith a “game manager” what would you call him? He’s certainly not a guy that you tell to to throw the ball 35-40 times to win the game. I’ve seen what they’re doing with their O all over the NFL, including early in Joe’s career here. Give the ball to your star running back, let them carry the load and make a few tosses here and there. Not knocking it cause it clearly works for them. Maybe hes a late bloomer.
If I take off my homer hat for a min. I don’t see how an AFC team wins the Super Bowl this year. GB is great, NO is solid, CHI looks brilliant at times (Cutler injury pending), Det is in there, and SF will have to prove themselves the next several weeks….every week. This game will be close and hard fought. Lots of pride and bragging rights on the line in the Harbaugh family, and both coaches want it baaaaad.

but do both teams want it bad?
SF is unquestionably in control of their division, and frankly, they can afford to drop one on the road out of conference here. The loss wouldn’t look too bad for them. We, on the other hand, want to take control of our whole conference, and we need this win.
How many teams have beaten us at home in the last two seasons? One. Pittsburgh. San Fran is not Pittsburgh.
TO BILL BRASKY!!!
I don't know what I'd call him
I just hate that term lol.
As far as an AFC team winning. Yeah, right now it’s hard to imagine, but things will change. There are only two teams that from the AFC right now that I think have a shot. I don’t really think that many NFC teams look legitimate either. (except the one obvious one) but..there are 6 games left so, we’ll see.

nevermind
anything you can say to piss that guy off, I’m all for it. But being cocky and arrogant because your team has won a few games is stupid. You’re in the west…that’s 6 guaranteed wins a year.

We already have seven wins outside of the West
but it’s cute that you think our division is why we are 9-1. Before yesterday, it was 7-1 OUTSIDE the West.
Cocky and arrogant?

and yes..finally
as in, your team has been an embarrassment for almost ten years..
My team has had 7 losing seasons…in 42 years…
again, thanks for playing

Not only does SF have to face us
They still need to face the Steelers too, on Dec. 19th, but in SF. Go 49ers!
aka 'Rexx'
not that this matters
but we got Thurs night game against the Browns, then the following Monday, we got SF.
Plenty of travel time. Again..that could be important, or irrelevant.
Same as you getting them on a short week could be important or irrelevant.

Nick Rizzo, I have kids and none of them will grow up to be a poster child for the proletariat like you. Your parents did a fine job, Rizzo! They should be drawn and quartered.
Your prediction for this game is about as accurate as your predictions for the Ravens/pitt game. Which is to say they’re shit.
Let the fun begin, brother. Let’s see who gets the best of it.

I recognize and understan that the Steelers abd Ravens are the teams to beat in the AFCN
Not to accept that is just dishonest. I would at least like both Ravens and Steelers fans to understand that both of your teams only play the other top team twice a year. The Bengals have four games against the top dogs. That is an uphill battle and a very tough nut to crack. The Ravens and Steelers are very good teams that can play great. The bengals are a good team that can play very good while the Browns are a not so good team that can step up and bite you if you take them lightly. They are capable of beating almost anyone on a very good day – they just have a hard time havibg them more than a few times a year.
They really have a tough row to hoe. I think we are closer than we have been in 20 years but are a couple of key players short and not quite experienced enough in key positions.
All of that could change next year but this year we are what we are just a bit short of being really good. Next year there could be three top dogs and don’t count Cleveland out.
"If we always agree, one of us is not necessary"
I see the Bengals beating pitt at home and taking a wild card spot. You have a young, talented team that is similar to the Ravens and will cruise by pitt as they deal with aging vets and a skyrocketing payroll.
Cinci has a great qb and wr, a great te and Rb, a ferocious d line and excellent secondary. AND plenty of room to hire some prime vet talent. You’re going to leap frog pitt because of the patchwork, hobo way their front office went about handling things this season.
Great game yesterday, John. You’re a gentleman and a scholar.

Yes that is brutality. What Joe and the Ravens had to go through to get to the point where sweeping the Steelers was a possibility, Dalton and the Bengals will have to do two-fold. This may be the football equivalent of the AL East…
TO BILL BRASKY!!!
The Ravens played well yesterday, well, for half a game
Flacco played good yesterday. The interception was inexcusable and he is still missing easy short passes that keep a drive going. Torrey was able to reel in some long passes which make people forget the stalled drives. The offensive line still doesn’t seem to be able to create holes for the backs to have big games. Now for the defense. Is it that the front line doesn’t get enough pressure or the backs just can’t cover the receivers. The interceptions look good but you are a rookie QB missing his deep threat. The Webb interception was just a great effort on his part, the other two looked as bad as Flacco’s pass. I haven’t seen the Niners play so I really don’t know what the Ravens have to do to contain them. I see we have played two teams on each other’s schedule, the Seahawks which they dominate and we should have, and the Bengals which they just squeaked by just like us. So from that I still don’t know.
Flacco played good yesterday. The interception was inexcusable and he is still missing easy short passes that keep a drive going.
Yes that is true. I think that’s the Flacco I’ve come to know and accept. I can take that asinine interception and the botched handoff that he swiped off Leach’s elbow if for the rest of the game he can—generally speaking—dictate the pace of a game and move the ball downfield.
At this point I think the league accepts Flacco/Smith as a very serious big-play threat, and while I think it took some rough outings and low completion percentages to get there, we’re now reaping the benefits of that.
As for San Fran…
It will take a lot for me to change my mind about Alex Smith. At this point, I’d say he’s between the 10th and 15th best QB in the league on a good day. I’ve never seen the guy shred a defense or take control of a game—Gore does that. The way Marshawn made us look and the way O-Lines have been getting pushes up front against us worries me. That San Fran O-Line is no joke; certainly better than Seattle’s that manhandled us on that last drive.
Put San Fran in a position where they have to come from behind and I don’t think they’ll be able to. Put Alex Smith in a position where he has to win the game for them and I also don’t think he’ll be able to, especially not at M&T Bank Stadium in a night game. But this game could be close enough that San Fran will be able to play the kind of game that they’ve won all year, and if that happens we could have a close one. Or a loss.
Another tough defense for Joe to go up against. At this point I think we should all have faith in him, but San Fran, obviously, is a good team.
TO BILL BRASKY!!!
He targeted a receiver who was not open nor was he breaking free. That ball was thrown directly to the defender. Brain fart.
How would you excuse the pick?
TO BILL BRASKY!!!
the CB wasn’t fooled. he shadowed perfectly and turned around when the ball was in the air
Dalton threw his ball directly to Smith… Flacco’s ball was in the air before the CB turned
Not comparing Dalton to Flacco. Flacco played by far the superior game. All in all, that was his only bad throw.
Flacco’s ball was in the air before the CB turned
Yes but his receiver wasn’t breaking free at all. Turning or not, Dickson was simply not going to be open at any point during that play. He wasn’t breaking free and he was approaching the sideline. Even before he turned, the defender had completely denied that route.
TO BILL BRASKY!!!
since when does a WR have to break free for the ball to be thrown? it was a good anticipation throw… my problem with it is that he didn’t step into it and bullet it into his chest… and i could see the frustration on his face after he threw it
its a little out route.. and i think even though it wont pick up a lot of yards, its a great way to setup a CB for a big gaine later…
not saying you’re wrong.. just telling you what I saw… entirely subjective
Well jackma, everyone makes mistakes. Everyone.
I have found that when you try to do everything totally mistake free it tightens you up and you lose your edge. Flacco cannot let himself get to the point where he is afraid to make a mistake or several of the good plays you had yesterday would not have even been attempted. Was it a bad play? Yea, hell I could have intercepted that ball (not really – too old) but Flacco has to put it behind him and – well – so do you.
"If we always agree, one of us is not necessary"
Oh I agree
I was saying to someone else that I can accept Flacco for the mistakes he makes since overall he played pretty well yesterday. He understood the mistake he made, nobody needed to explain anything to him.
One of the things I like most about Flacco is that you can tell he has a short memory. He’s never going to be too hard on himself because he always believes hes going to go right back out there on the next drive and score.
TO BILL BRASKY!!!
No Thanks
The Ravens have 3 DUIs this season already.

To have no sense of humor and be defensive at all times. Youre sad, bro. You just dont like the comment coming from a steelers fan, one who doesnt troll here during games and does chime in occasionally with a reasonable opinion. But, whatever…..lighten up man.

You know that tune they play when you DON’T win on “the price is right”? – That’s the tune I hear every time you reply to anything. You seem to be obsessed with making every comment revolve around YOU. You like to be defensive and argue with a “pitt fan”. It isn’t my fault you cant laugh. You are what this site ISN’T about.

What kind of reception did you expect when you come to a Ravens forum with a name like “steeltech” and make jokes about Ravens and drunk driving?
Would you like some hot tea and a backrub? Get the fuck out of here….get real
by Evan Skev on Nov 21, 2011 7:11 PM EST via mobile up reply actions
Ravens to Steelers & Texans: “Pull Over… We’ll Drive!” – The word steelers will likely catch the attention of a steelers fan. “We’ll drive” refers to the ravens leading the way in the afc. The DUI comment wasnt about drunk driving, it was a fun jab at the ravens for their inconsistancy on the road this year (something your fellow ravens fans admit and joke about) But of course, this had to be explained to you because it hurt your feelings and everything you read is taken so literally. Like I said, lighten up, brother. Your hatred is ugly.
I'd sooner get Flacco'd out here in the middle of nowhere than lose face in front of my friends and family.
Hey I respect your opinion
And whines hard accused the police and DA office of trying to frame him after he was arrested for drunk driving. That’s something I don’t respect.
As long as you’re wearing black & yellow and acting like a typical pitt douche, you can kiss my ass. Nice joke though!
And enjoy second or third place this year… The road is fun

I agree with everything you say
Except that we ran Rice on the first play in BOTH games against Pittsburgh and he broke out for very long runs. We all know that in the second game, it was only a penalty on Torrey Smith that negated the TD.
So I say run it right down their throats as much as we can to open up the pass and for the pass to open up the run and so forth.
In my humble opinion.
