Greg Mattison Accepts Michigan Job; Chuck Pagano Promoted to DC
Greg Mattison has decided to leave Baltimore, to be the defensive coordinator for Michigan. Mattison has coached the Ravens' defense for the past two seasons, but his background is in the collegiate ranks at the University of Florida, Notre Dame and Western Michigan. As a Mattison fan myself, I wish him him the best of luck with Michigan.
Ozzie Newsome didn't have to look far for Mattison's replacement, promoting Chuck Pagano, the Raven's secondary coach, to defensive coordinator.
"We’re excited for our defense and for Chuck, and we’re happy for Greg Mattison," coach John Harbaugh said. "I will talk more about it tomorrow when we formally announced Chuck as our new coordinator in a press conference."
Congratulations to Chuck Pagano for getting the job, I can't wait to see what he can bring to our defense!

While I wasn't one of those who wanted Mattison gone
I’m shocked there’s not some kind of search for a qualified replacement. We’re actually going to have a team coached by a special teams guy, with a completely ineffective OC and now a DC who’s claim to fame is being the coach behind the weakest part of our defense. Yeah, I’m waiting to see what he does as well…
Predict that Ray and Reed rethink whether the getting is good now that the defense will be as unknown and possibly as unplanned as the offense.

I think Chuck could do a good job.
He has been in the system and demonstrated his ability in coaching the secondaries.
How has he demonstrated his ability?
The secondary was, prior to the season considered to be the weakest part of our defense. It turned out to not be quite as horrible as most people thought, but that wasn’t the linebackers or the line letting Ben throw past them on Saturday.

When you consider the talent he was working with...
he did a pretty damn good job. From what I’ve heard he’s an aggressive coach, which is just what we need in our DC.
He'll have to be
Considering he’s gonna have to make up for the Perry Como of Playcalling on the other side of the ball.

He could very well be even better
thn Mattison as he has been in our system and took our biggest weakness and salvaged what ould have been a disaster. I look forward to seeing him eradicate the three-man rush from our gameplan and that alone will get him props from the fans!

I'm sorry - I just don't get the connection
That someone took our biggest weakness and salvaged what could have been a disaster and turned it into what – not quite a disaster?? And this is a recommendation??
It’s not like he took a potential disaster secondary (even considering what he had to work with) and turned it into a top five secondary. He made it adequate. So, now I guess mediocre job performance is the highest we can hope for?
And as far as getting rid of the 3 man rush – you said it yourself. He’s been in the system for awhile and the three man rush is what this system does.

Really? Reed was clutch all year, Fox is good, Wilson is good, Webb is decent. But he makes one bad mistake and they are the weakest part of our defense? I’m not buying it.

You don't have to buy it from me
I’m certainly not the first person – before, during or after the season who said our secondary was suspect.

Our secondary is good. Wilson and Webb and Foxworth. Wilson only started 10 games and was our best cover corner. Webb was rehabbing his knee the whole off-season so he was thrown in the fire, technically he just completed his first season. Fox is still our number one guy.
I wouldn’t be mad if nnamdi came in though.

Agreed...alot of folks forget..
Webb was only in a few games last year..so as a starter this year it was basically his rookie season.
BW - A big thanks
for getting this up a lot quicker than I would have. Just logged on to post this, but saw you had it up an hour ago.
Could use more consistent help from you and the others now and then. Thanks again!

Looks like my dream of Josh McDaniels went down the drain
Signed with the Rams. Rams are going to have a dominant offense in a couple of years, I guarantee it.

So he is leaving the league to be a DC for college. Did I miss something. I thought the NFL was the ultimate goal.

I don't watch much college football
just don’t have a team to root for.The level of play is not uptopar for leisure viewing as well, in my opinion… Teams sometime score touchdowns like they grow on trees…
Exactly
The way I’ve always explained my opinion of college football is, “When you were in high school how many JV games did you go watch?” You can’t substitute for the real thing right?!
I guess we better say goodbye to his son
Too bad he can’t head back to college as well. Do you really think we can’t find a better backup in free agency? The Draft? Or even the UFL? Bye bye Mattison’s….
who is better then Cam and Harbaugh that you would like to get
McDaniels and Cowher are the only upgrades I can think of, and McDaniels just signed.
i have know idea who is out there. i wouldn’t even hint at the 2 you mentioned. my point is that losing 7 in a row to the one man that stands between you and moving your franchise to the next level has to become inexcusable at some point. for me 7 in a row is beyond rediculous. but, hey, why the urgency when your owner resigned Billick to a huge contract after his terrible O struggled for years and then his acceptance of Cam and Harbaugh’s inferiority complex to Pitt.. It’s just not acceptable.
He's back in college where he belongs
I was hoping for Cable, but I know the Raven’s will enjoy having a younger coach with a sharp, a fresh “get at em” attitude!! Now I can get that last play where “Greggy Boy” rushed only three on a third and 19. The one thing that pisses me off is that he must have known that he was leaving when he game planned for the Steelers. The Raven’s have givven up more yardage under him than anyone else that I can remember. Good riddance!!

Will pagano turn to a 4-3. It may suit us better for what we have. Suggs and Kruger on the ends and cody and Ngata in the middle. Jj can still stay on the outside and maybe kindle can play the other if they clear him.
by Raven_all_day on Jan 18, 2011 10:50 PM EST via mobile reply actions
not sure but Kindle gets too much word play for never taking a snap. kruger seems like a rookie all over again with his minimal playing time. i am almost faking interest in this team now because i know whatever we do Cam will call the same garbage plays and continue to shoot us in the feet with Flacco lumbering along….the fighting spirit of a Zombie.
my thoughts exactly...besides the faking interest
I said right after the game that next season(if there is one)ill still love the ravens and cheer them on, but I know there’s not a chance with cam Cameron still at the helm. I was really prayin for oz to make a move for mcdaniels. That would have been awesome. I’m still pullin for them to make that next step but it seems like its just wishful thinkin with cam

shoot us in the leg
remember we’re open to signing Burress now
I like Turtles!
calm down
step away from the ledge people, the team will be fine.
this blog is depressing to read, all of you fans are losing your shit!
Let's be fair with Cameron...
He’s not a horrible OC. His track record shows that is not the case. I’d even say he was the perfect fit for the offense in 2008. However, his style no longer fits with the team. It seems he thrives with a good running game (Tomlinson in San Diego and McClain/McGahee in 2008). Ray Rice isn’t that kind of back. Rice does better on short and screen passes. We need a OC that is more pass oriented, that’s how the team is currently constructed.
Another interesting thing I’ve seen is that both Drew Brees and Phillip Rivers improved drastically once they left Cameron. Brees became an elite QB and Rivers I would say is on the cusp. Flacco could really benefit and perhaps enter the elite category with a new OC.
Overall I’d say this team definitely needs a new OC, but I’m not going to trash Cameron while saying that. Cameron has talent, he’s just not a fit for this team.
there’s no doubt the offense got better the first year cameron came here. the problem is they haven’t improved since that first year. the players we have on offense this year are a lot better yet it’s still as good/bad as that 2008 offense. i really want to give him another year but our hall of famers may not have another year.
yeah, he failed pretty miserably when it really came down to it. the back to back rice runs up the gut in the red zone sealed it for me. he hasn’t grown as a O-coord. He’s still affraid to throw the ball into the end zone with any regularity or with any aggressivness. See how Ben gets into the zone and throws darts. Flacco has 2 passing plays in that area, a lob to the corner and a very defensive curl…open or not.
i wonder if Chuck has a really nice relationship with Nnadi and he could lure him int signing for less. just dreaming? yea, just dreaming.
Scott Hines
The selling point – “has been in the system” isn’t always a great one. Especially a system that has struggled – WITH his help!!!
