Ravens @ Steelers: 2nd Half 'Open Thread'

The Baltimore Ravens lead the Pittsburgh Steelers 21-7 at the end of the first half. a solid defensive effort highlighted by an incredible heads-up play by Cory Redding and a fumble recovery led to two TD's after the Steelers got on the board first. Joe Flacco has played calm and collected, with Rice breaking tackles by Troy Polamalu and Todd Heap continuing his recent playoff surge. The Ravens defense is putting pressure on Ben Roethlisberger and he has not been able to consistently make the plays to take advantage of his scrambling abilities.
The Ravens have played great defense in the third quarter and if they can get another score and hold Pittsburgh scoreless, they will be on their way to the AFC Championship Game. A lot of football left in this game, so if Baltimore thinks they can go into a conservative offense now, they will be sadly mistaken and let the Steelers back into the game.
The fact that Pittsburgh has no more challenges left in the game could be a huge advantage. Keep an eye on this stat and see what happens in the game's final thirty minutes. We’re throwing pretty short-intermediate so far so we should be ok in snow but those long over the top passes to Wallace aren’t going to be easy to make.

I agree with what was said earlier,
that number of penalties doesn’t necessarily show that a referee was (or wasn’t) playing favorites. I felt like we got fucked early, and it changed the way the game went. I’m sure you feel the same. Bottom line, we needed to score on the opening possession, get a stop, score again, and pull away. This team could do that. But doesn’t.

I try to look for both,
and there were at least a few calls that I thought were against the Steelers, but nowhere near as many as I saw against the Ravens. We’re arguing the same point, so I’m going to stop arguing it now.

Doesn’t make it right that he has different rules protecting him, but probably happens.

Remember the discussion about who had the better WRs? The rookies Sanders/Brown you dismissed over Housh/Boldin outplayed your high priced FAs today. Flacco takes too much heat when the truth is other than Heap/Rice none of his recievers can consistently get open or catch the ball.
Ryan Clark was the best safety on the field, Ziggy Hood outplayed Ngata, and our line O barely did enough.
Its bad news for steelers fans when you hear the words “Good news for steelers fans, Jonathon Scott is back at LT”. Suggs had a monster game but did get away with a blow to Bens head on the fumble he caused. That should have been 15 yds and a 1st down for Pittsburgh, not a Ravens TD.

Not true
First, on the rookies. It is no way in hell that Sanders/Brown are better than Boldin/Houshmandzadeh. They simply don’t know enough about how to run routes. Sanders/Brown have speed have speed and that’s it right now.
The OC/QB dynamic has a huge impact on the WR play. When you have bigger more physical WR’s that don’t get the great separation ala Hines Ward…….. the use of stack, diamond and bunch formations that act as a cushion and gives the WR the free release that aids them getting in and out of breaks before DB’s can react, make life difficult. When these formations were used they were primarily used free up Todd Heap.
The truth of matter is Flacco is not a premier passer when it counts and that fact is exacerbated by the conservative, inconsistent and lack of rhythm playcalling of Cam Cameron. WR’s were opened in this game and the right reads were not made by Flacco. You can’t leave sustaining drive plays on the field and expect to win Championship games.
As far as DB play is concerned, the Ravens secondary breaks down and gives up the big play at the most inopportune times in games. It’s been a constant all year.

Don’t think Troy is 100%, both of those plays came with him moving to his right, using his injured leg to push. First play he got a solid hit on the thigh, but Rice is like a pinball.
It was a well timed run call after the Ravens had at least 7 straight passes, the D was clearly playing pass.
Second play he was well out of it but still got there to have a shot, went right anticipating Rice would turn that way and was wrong. More often than not a right handed playerswill turn back to their right.
And when we gave momentum away?

he appears too slow in his decision making
Flacco
Flacco does not process information quickly enough to be an elite passer. He is not a great timing and anticipatory passer and Flacco needs huge windows inorder to feel comfortable. This is the NFL and you just don’t get those huge windows in the league very often. He appears to only trust Mason and Heap. This severely limits the passing possibilities and potential big plays.
