One of The Best Cornerbacks In The NFL Is Now A Free Agent !!!!
Oakland Raiders cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha is now a free agent and it's not clear if the Raiders are planning to re-sign/franchise tag him to keep their best cornerback on their team. Nnamdi Asomugha is well known as one of the shutdown cornerbacks in the NFL and because of that not to many quarterbacks throw to his direction; Nnamdi Asomugha's stats this year weren’t impressive with nineteen tackles, zero interceptions, zero sacks, and six pass deflections.
Asomugha's contract was voided because he didn't meet the standards to the incentives that came with his contract this year. Nnamdi will see lots of attention this off-season as a free agent and it may include attention from the Ravens.

Obviously a top 3 CB in this league, but we are fine with what we have. Foxworth and Wilson for the future, the two Terps. Both have played very, very good football for us. Then add Webb as our nickel and Carr coming back, we have a very good group. Get rid of Fabian and possibly draft a CB in the first three rounds.
or
Sign Champ Bailey anyone? I would much rather get Bailey than Asomugha because of the money. Asomugha is going to cost alotttttt and we need to use that money on Ngata, Rice, Grubbs, Joe and others in the future. Champ would be a cheaper signing and can still bring it.

Too old - Bailey
How old is Cham vs. Nnamdi? Champ is 32 and Nnamdi is 29.

I say give him $1 more than Revis
Save $7 million by cutting Foxworth. That would give us Nnamdi and Wilson starting, with Carr and Webb as nickel and dime and insurance for injuries. Waht would be considered a weakness now becomes a strength.
Oakland cannot Franchise him by the wording of his contract, so unless they re-sign him, he will hit the open market.

I truly don't believe out secondary is a true weakness at this point.
We’ve given up plenty of pass yards but our Yards Per Attempt stat is pretty low. Ever since Reed came back the entire secondary has been forcing turnovers all over the place. Wilson did give up a game winning play but he’s been wonderful since. Webb isn’t living up to expectations but he is definitely a big play guy. Even Carr has been solid. If Foxworth performs near what he did before his injury we’ll be more than set.
with the league's emphasis on passing
it’s important to have a strong secondary. why would you pass up on one of the best corners in the game except for cap reasons?
i think a higher priority should be finding a DE/OLB passrusher to do what kruger and it seems kindle could not, and if gaither doesn’t return; a true LT, something not usually found in the 5th round of the supplemental draft; a safety if ed reed retires, or landry continues to attempt shoestring tackles; a deep threat WR of the ilk of mike wallace, meachem, etc; and then a top corner if available, by FA or draft. but if nmandi is available, go after him.
Cutting Foxworth
Would lead to an accelerated cap hit, as far as I know.
We will not get Nnamdi…We are going to make Haloti the highest paid player at his position. We cannot afford to make Asomugha the highest paid CB also.
There Is
No Cap hit!!!! Yet!!!! We have no idea what the CBA or cap rules will be. Yes, obviously if the agreed upon cap rules are even more draconian than before, then we pass on Asomugha (Freudian slip?) – obviously-! But in the mean time, why not play a few “what if?” scenarios…
If the rules allow, go balls to the wall-! Given even money, I think a lot of players would prefer to come to Baltimore over several other organizations. Yes arguments can be made for a P-burgh preference, but both organizations are similar so duh… And of course NE, philly, and possibly Atlanta-Green Bay-Chicago come to mind. But with some of the higher profile organizations i.e. cowpokes, deadskins, Rex Ryans -there is a lot of distractions that come with those -I like Baltimore’s chances in an FA derby for the top players.
Either way, we will not go after him
We have way too many free agents to re-sign before we look elsewhere.

I don't see the Ravens signing him
if I was to guess on his destination, Cowboys, Lions, Raiders and Redskins would be my guesses.
Players who should be in the Hall of Fame: Pat TIllman, Dwight White, Donnie Shell, L.C. Greenwood, Ray Guy, Steve Tasker, Jack Butler, Greg Llyod, Andy Russel, Cris Carter, Kevin Greene and Jerry Kramer

It would be an awesome signing.
Having Asomugha to go along with Wilson, Webb, and Carr is craziness. However, if there is a safety available to replace the mistake-prone Landry, then I would signed the safety over Asomugha or any other elite corner.
It would be a terrible decision to get rid of Landry. He has played very well this year besides a few missed tackles. But he is 2nd on our team in tackles and that is tough to do in this defense, especially someone from the secondary. Landry is the best option we have to put next to Reed.

Landry has really stepped his game up lately
But if he goes pro, I have dreams about Kenny Tate playing next to Reed.
Kenny Tate went to my high school and he basically won us both the basketball and football championships 4 years in a row. I don’t really follow college football, is he still playing well?

Many people are saying he would be drafted int he 2nd round if he comes out this year, but could easily be a first round pick next year which I think he will be doing. Guy is a heavy hitter and has great ball skills.

Yea
He was great this year – only his third at safety, after being recruited as a WR. Check out his stats…
90 Tackles
4 Sacks
3 FF
3 INT
1 TD
Was first team ALL-ACC and will have a great chance to be All-American if he comes back for his senior year.
$$$
Is irrelevant as we have no idea what the the CBA much less the salary cap situation is going to be like. Stevie B. has publicly stated he will do whatever it takes, not matter what it costs, to improve the Ravens and he has backed that up with some pretty awesome FA signings, this year, an uncapped year, that he would not have been able to do in an otherwise capped year, under the old CBA.
So if Ozzie trots down to Steve’s office, puts his feet up, and says, “Asomugha, to the house! Wearing purple!!!” I have no doubt Steve would open up the checkbook, if it could be done in a reasonable fashion under whatever CBA/cap is agreed upon.
Try this on for size: say by some weird, fluke of football flatulence, the Ravens do indeed land the whale of the off-season, Asomugha. Why not have him at #1, Foxworth #2, Carr and Wilson at nickel and dime (pick whichever, probably doe snot matter which is which); move Webb to FS. Heck, if there were to be a longjam, I could see moving Carr to Safety also. Am I crazy or what? And what is wrong with “dream a little dream”…?
are you assuming ed reed retires?
else, why move webb to FS. wasn’t Carr a safety when he came here? it’s yet to see how well foxworth will even recover from his ACL tear.
Yes
I think Reed hangs ’em up after this season. His body just seems half broke after some plays and given everything else swirling around him, he may feel his energies are better directed elsewhere. I think he is definitely a reason there seems to be a “new sense of urgency” on the Ravens, especially on the defensive side, to get a ring for certain folks.
the $$$ absolutely matters
Owners know sooner or later something will be signed and the contracts will be kept in line CBA or not. Owners are far from stupid.

I think Reed is back
He loves football and this team too much to walk away. If Ray is back, Reed will be back as well.
I approve of your craziness.

Depends on whatever the salary situation is like next year.
While one of the top 2 or 3 Cornerbacks in the league is always a desirable player we don’t need him as much as we did last year. With the money we’re going to have to use to lock down Ngata and resign a few of our 1 year contract players we might not have enough for Nndami who will definitely ask for a ridiculous sum since he was already overpaid in Oakland.
he can't be franchised by Oakland.
the clause that made him a FA did so by eliminating the possibility of him being franchised.

FILL YOUR HANDS YOU SONS OF BITCHES!
I honestly dont think the Ravens will need to go after Nnamdi Asomugha
becuase we already have good cornerbacks now with Chris Carr, Josh Wilson,Ladarius Webb, and Cary Williams. I dont see Fabian Washington coming back and it would be smart for them to keep Chris Carr around becuase he is playing solid for us this year.
I dont see them parting ways with Cary Williams, Chris Carr, and Josh Wilson becuase not only they can be solid on defense but they have special team value; Nnamdi Asomugha doesnt play special team and I cant see him demanding big money becuase his stats this year dont say like he deserves big money right now yes he good but how do anybody know he still has it
assuming we even have 15 mil to spend
i would want an LT or an edge rusher
The Problem
Is Supply and demand. The demand is there for top tier FA’s, in all positions, every year. If I had a choice between Asomugha and the functional equivalent of an O-lineman, then, yes, I take the O-lineman. Barring a Jake Long or Joe Thomas coming available, I’ll take what I can get. The supply is only for a select few, at some positions, for some years. When an acknowledged and deserved All-Pro becomes available, you would be foolish to not at least examine the “art of the possible”.
Great Link
Thanks. Hate to be negative, but I do not believe a word about Gaither. I will be completely blown away shocked into next week if he returns to Ravens as a tackle.
Having said that, it appears there are some nice attractive targets potentially out there at the tackle position. Of course, other teams will try sign them, starting with their own, but I believe the Ravens will have at least a decent chance at at least one of the better ones. Not looking good for Center -may have to go the draft route or trade.
Given what we have currently, Nnamdi Asomugha is the only CB I would consider going after.
Looking at the linebackers, I only see one, two or three I would even consider. But, I am not so stressed about this as we seem pretty good and drafting and building this position from within; even though right now we may be in a bit of a trough. I see no reason why we cannot continue to draft at this position and continuing to build from within at LB.
I think where we can land a blue-chipper or two is on the DL -lots of solid candidates; I am sure the Ravens could sign one or two of the better ones. Put them with Ngata and a platooned Cody, WOW…
Based upon this, I see the Ravens signing a big name D-lineman or two and possible an offensive tackle. Would love to see Nnamdi Asomugha in purple but not holding my breath (but still keeping my fingers crossed-!!)
It all depends on what other teams are going to throw at Gaither. But him now playing this year really, really hurt his chances of seeing a huge pay day. I am sure some team like Dallas will throw him ridiculous money, but if Gaither wants a ring his best chances right now is to stay with us.
I do believe he wants to stay here. He is a Maryland guy and we are the team that gave him a chance when no one else would. I hope that his shit sniffing agent hasn’t blinded him of that.

Easy to be
Blinded, when Dr. Rosenhaus pulls the “beep-beep-beep” routine; as in that is the sound of the money truck backing up to your house…
But I agree, what a great description:
sh!t sniffing agent
That’s a keeper!
interesting list
the guys that catch my eye are mostly the top-tier guys, so i don’t expect the ravens to bring in many if any after re-signing their own. but, all things equal and it worked out that we had a need and these guys weren’t retained by their own, i wouldn’t mind seeing them go after:
S Weddle
CB Asomugha
Joseph (no way the bengals let him get away)
Bailey (switch to safety?)
LB Hali (we saw what he can do)
Woodley (no way the steelers let him get away)
D’Qwell Jackson (rename the Ravens the pro-Terps?)
Erin Henderson (ditto)
DE Kiwanuka
Cullen Jenkins
WR Vincent Jackson (probably too expensive)
Malcolm Floyd (chargers won’t let him get away)
James Jones
We need to create more pass rush, whether we do that with another speed-rushing LB like Hali next to Suggs, well, that’d be great but unlikely, or a more traditional 4-3 d-end.
I’d like an upgrade on Landry if possible.
I’d love a true lockdown corner, so Asomugha, while not priority, is too good to ignore.
I’d love a speed guy or someone who can make big plays down the field at WR. Stallworth hasn’t been doing it, and Boldin, Mason, and Housh (a FA) are all more possession-style guys.
We could address some of these through the draft as well, of course. And it’s all a bit early, considering its Steelers week, part 3!
Man, if we got either D’Qwell Jackson or Erin Henderson, that would be a dream come true.

I’d hate to see you guys get Hali. I think he would fit your hybrid defense really well. After this type of year though, I’d be really surprised if the Chiefs let him go.
