BREAKING NEWS: Ravens Sign T.J. Houshmandzadeh

As reported even earlier by our own BAL_Hawk, the Baltimore Ravens agreed to terms with former Cincinnati Bengals and Seattle Seahawks wide receiver T.J. Houshmandzadeh on a one-year, $855,000 contract.

It is also being reported here on NFL.com by Jason La Canfora.

Aaron Wilson from the National Football Post has the news here.

Click here for the story on ProFootballTalk.com

So far nothing confirming the move on BaltimoreRavens.com, although that should change shortly once it becomes official.

Now the question is, whose roster spot is he gonna be taking?

by justlaxn0 on Sep 6, 2010 12:37 PM EDT reply actions

No way

Too much potential with the TE’s, and too much injury history with Heap.

My guess is either David Reed, Edgar Jones, Ken Hamlin, or Marcus Smith. Either way, I bet Hamiln is gone by the time Ed Reed gets back.

Edgar Jones

I sure hope they don’t cut him. He provides depth on offense and defense and is a monster on ST.

For a guy who has bounced around positions so much, the fact that they’ve kept him around as long as they have speaks volumes about his ST contributions.

he might actually have fantasy relevence over there with bradford, since they are going to be throwing alot when they are behind which will be most of the time.

They still have Steven Jackson and will probably ram the ball down opposing teams throats to protect Bradford

Dude drops one pass

and everyone hates him forever. His problem wasn’t ever his ability to catch, twas his ability to get open against any decent coverage. He certainly never lived up to that 1st round pick nonsense.

If I remember correctly, DMase also dropped a pretty catch-able ball that cost the Ravens a game, and yet no one hates on him for it.

Nasty receiver set. Boldin and TJ blocking for Rice will be pain enough for D’s let alone vicious slant patterns where they can plow a shoulder into an LB’s chest.

When they do something smart I will commend them. By pouring some money on O we can find out what Flacco can do. Last year it was mostly Rice and Mason with Willis playing mop up. It was amazing how far we went with those 3 and Flacco still learning. It all has to click this year. As far as receiver and rb depth it doesn’t get much better than this. 3 TE’s that can start. 5 veteran receivers. 3 starting RB’s. Rays twilight years along with Gregg, Reed and Mason. It has to happen now. I expect a huge sense of urgency with this team. I expect to see young players who step out of line to have there necks grabbed by more than 1 verteran. There is so much on the line for so many veteran players.

Blger would be a fine replacement

for Flacco. similar styles and imagine how good Bulger could do without having to get knocked on his back like he did for the last few years in St. Louis.

There’s too much invested in our boy Flacco to just watch the reins get handed over to Bulger, especially with the WR corps we have now.

This Flacco has too much potential and too much invested in him to let Bulger take over

That said yeah Bulger would probably do pretty great now that he has an O-Line with guys like Matt Birk and Oher instead of the cardboard cutouts at St. Louis.

Oh don’t worry man, I know we are screwed. Jamaar Robinson has a great chance of being the worst passer in the ACC this year. I mean 3/6, 16 yards and 1 int? Those are Troy Smith numbers right there. Fridge and Franklin better get their shit together with this “passing attack” because if we get down by 14 points, I don’t see how they can come back since Jamaar cannot keep up in a shoot out against good teams. Torrey Smith is too good of a WR and a major deep threat to just run these QB sweeps half the time.

Does anybody else not like this move?

TJ is a douche, a textbook prima dona wide receiver who complains about not getting the ball enough. How is he going to handle being a #3 receiver? The ravens just traded away a locker room leader(and the team’s only deep threat and are replacing him with another possession guy who also happens to be a huge asshole. On a fan level, not on a talent level, I hate this move.

by ello on Sep 6, 2010 4:42 PM EDT reply actions

Not sold on the move

My first reaction was “you’re kidding” and not in a good way. Three reasons I am still somewhat skeptical:

1. Never liked Housh as a player, but that was mainly due to his kicking our butts on the field and being mouthy about it. If he produces for the Ravens, I guess I will get over that pretty fast.

2. He does not add a new dimension to our offense. Another possession type receiver. That being said, having three possession wideouts in a ball control offense is not the worst thing.

3. Not a great locker room guy. There is more heartache in Seattle over Josh Wilson leaving than Housh being cut. Don’t see Cincy fans crying much either. That tells you something.

So while I don’t hate the move, and I hope by mid-season I see the wisdom of Oz, sitting here today I am not feeling it like the rest of the fans here saying this is another ticket punch to the Super Bowl.

Hope they are right and we are wrong.

LOL. Clayton a locker room leader. I can just picture that…as Ray, Reed, Mason, Boldin, Heap, Ngata, Gree, Suggs, Price and Birk sit quietly in their locker stalls hanging on Claytons every inspiring word. LOL.

TJ is older and wiser. He won’t be a dona on this team. He has 1 year to enjoy the ride. He won’t screw that up. He’s going to be lucy goosey and have a blast. I bet he is a very humble dude with our beasts.

i liked Clayton but wondered if he was too nice sometimes. Great receivers demand the “damn ball”. Clayton is not a bust, just an average receiver. At that position you want your guy to be somewhat of a pain in the #$%, Joe should be ready for that in year 3. We now have WR’s that are gamers, wanting to be “the guy”. i’m sure there will be some complaining but winning can cure that.

Housh was full out released by Seattle (bad waves in the locker room) thus leaving him wide open to join any team he’d like since the Seahawk would have to pay most of his contract. Yadda yadda yadda, he signs with the team most likely to get him his ring, and the rest is history my friend.

by WarWolf on Sep 7, 2010 2:14 AM EDT reply actions

i didn't feel like reading all of this

but a lot of people were talking about how old our (bengals) receivers are, but we also have 4 good young receivers on our roster. you just traded away your 1st round draft pick from a few years ago and now you have 2 29 yr olds, a 32 yr old, and a 36 yr old. a 5th rd draft pick, and i’ll admit i know nothing about marcus smith.

an honest question: how do you feel about the future of your WR position? i know it’s usually in ozzie we trust for you guys, but you have literally no one in the wings to take over. (which was the reason we didnt sign TJ. we have to get our young guys some snaps)

RIP Slim.

by brandone on Sep 7, 2010 3:44 PM EDT reply actions

honestly

as far as the FUTURE goes, it’s pretty murky. Obviously we can expect 3 or 4 good years out of Boldin, so that’s not a big issue. Then the rookie TEs both look great. But obviously there is a lot of uncertainty with Mason and TJ, who would be two big losses to take at the same time (one would think).

The main thing we’re thinking is “holy cow this team looks good” and we want to win a SB. Then, once the CBA is in place, we can talk about re-signing whoever we re-sign and whatever happens will happen.

why?

because it’s true? playoff stats for flacco:

Season Team Games Att Comp Pct Yds YPA Lg TD Int Rating
2008 Baltimore 3 75 33 44.0% 437 5.8 48 1 3 50.8
2009 Baltimore 2 45 24 53.3% 223 4.96 27 0 3 39.4

a 50.8 overall rating in 08 and a 39.4 in 09? you think that doesn’t need to improve?

RIP Slim.

by brandone on Sep 7, 2010 9:24 PM EDT up reply actions

Last year, Flacco was playing with a ridiculous leg injury. You could see that his throwing form was way off and he was getting no strength from his lower body. It’s not surprising to hear from fans of the lesser teams that throw out stats but never bother to wonder why he only had ten passing attempts against New England (quick answer: he could barely walk), but I still hear Ravens fans spewing this, too. Assuming our porous offensive line doesn’t get Flacco killed, I expect a much better performance from him in January 2011.

Water covers 2/3 of the Earth's surface. Ed Reed covers the rest.

by Ampallang on Sep 7, 2010 9:57 PM EDT up reply actions

so was he hurt in 08 too?

i know all about stats not telling the whole story. like how in 08 we had something like 17 of our opening day starters on IR (according to Football Outsiders, the worst injury DVOA in history). Then there’s palmer who has had some sort of lingering injury since the steelers took him out in his first playoff game. But that doesn’t stop ravens fans and everyone else saying he’s not good, flacco’s better, etc.

and leave the lesser team comments out of it. i made an observation based on what i watched the past few years and the stats. especially since head to head, we win more than we lose.

but all of that aside, i fully expect to see him improve, both with maturity and weapons around him. it’s gonna be a battle, as usual.

RIP Slim.

by brandone on Sep 8, 2010 9:49 AM EDT up reply actions

08 he was a rookie. And he actually played pretty well against Tennessee, with a QB rating of 89 (despite it still being a very limited and rookie-ish role he was playing).

Obviously Joe still has to work on certain aspects of his game. I’m not suggesting that he’s an elite passer yet. But that is a leap he could very conceivably make in this season. I’m not sure how many 3rd year QBs have had receiving corps THIS stacked before…

i would worry about the lack of a deep threat though. housh and boldin have made pro bowls out of their work underneath, but if you watched the bengals last year, if you can’t blow the top off the d, underneath routes are hard to come by.

true.

But who did you guys have last year. Ocho and Coles. Oh yea and coffman. You need more than one or two guys to blow the lid off it. Mason is a deep threat. He OS no Andre Johnson but he had to have between 7-10 +20 yard plays last year. Added dickson who is a mismatch against any defender and still have heap. Unlike your receivers we have guys that can produce after the catch. You have on in T.O
So either boldin housh or mason can turn a ten yard hitch into 30 yards.

We had Henry(rip)

For half the season. You can watch our offense stop when he broke his arm. An then he died in the truck accident. The kid was Randy moss lite.

And Coffman never played a game. He was injured. Foot problem.

Ocho, Shipley, Gresham, and Caldwell can produce after the catch. And to seems to be reenergized. So we’ll see.

I was thinking a different kind of yac. If chad is not hit in stride he will go str8 to the ground. Boldin will turn a 10 yard hitch into a 30 yard gain and the same with housh.

We are no worse...

off than last season on youth in the wr corp. last year we had mason clayton and kelley washington; clayton was 26 or so, but he wasn’t going to be with us long term unless he was willing to take a reasonable contract. other than that, we had no future at WR. Marcus Smith is a 3rd year player who we took in the 4th round, he was a special teams stud as a rookie, and he was injured in training camp last year. we have hope for him, but he is just a possession receiver.
So between him, Boldin and Reed, plus our 2 TE’s, our receiving future is much more secure than last year, although we still need to find that stud 6"2 + wr of the future.

by Rayisyourdaddy on Sep 7, 2010 6:30 PM EDT up reply actions

Hey Cincy...

So now we have 3 pro-bowl WR,a pro-bowl tight end, full back and tail back, just on offense,we have something like 8 players over 30 yrs old, which makes this a young team.By the time we need WR’s,we’ll get them,we have faith in THE OZ,which I wouldn’t expect you to even comprehend. As for trading away a 1st round draft choice,he didn’t fit the plan and had plenty of time to prove himself,so we upgraded the position. You didn’t sign TJ because he wanted to be in Baltimore, you weren’t a choice, period. You should worry about your team, you have a statue for a QB, a couple prima dona WR who think they are the team instead of being part of a team, this is not the typical Ravens of the past, you will see for yourself soon!!!

P.S. Next time read all the posts

by thomlord on Sep 7, 2010 4:38 PM EDT reply actions

haha.

did you even read my post? because there’s a difference between discussion of a team and whatever you took my post as. but i’ll bite because i love a little tiff.

TJ has talked about coming back to cincy before and always speaks of it like it was a mistake to leave. we were never in consideration because before he was released, marvin said it wouldn’t be a good fit. he almost wound up in washington, so to say baltimore was the first thing on his mind when he was released is ignorant.

a statue for a QB? it’s called pocket presence. a lot of QBs do it. watch a few games, you’ll see. but last time i checked, that statue owns your team. he’s what 8-3, 9-4? i don’t remember off hand and don’t care to check.

but beware the prima donna label, because bengals fans watched first hand as TJ whined and talked about how he was a #1 WR. And last time i checked chad and TO didn’t really have a problem last year with their roles on their teams. TJ, however, whined a lot.

RIP Slim.

“hopefully that continues”

Not so much.

Palmer just doesn’t have the same timing he used too. The ball gets to the receivers when they can’t make YAC. He used to hit guys coming right out of their breaks; not anymore though.

by BmoreBlitz on Sep 8, 2010 11:38 AM EDT up reply actions

that's a timing issue

that’s not palmer’s age or anything else. and let’s not forget he had a broken thumb last year so selling a play action wasn’t happening, and it took him an extra second to even try.

also, the hopefully that continues quote was about benson thrashing your d.

Good point about the injury. We’ll see this year if it was that or his skills diminishing.
