How other teams make their 53 man roster

As we were sweating out the final cuts along with the bubble players, and trying to guess the makeup of the final 53 man roster, I started wondering "What does the typical roster in the NFL look like?"  I assumed it would be pretty standard with 25 offense, 25 defense and 3 ST plus or minus 1 between O and D.  So with the final cuts being announced yesterday, I took a look at the final rosters of 10 teams (our Division and selected others) to see how the roster compositions compared.

A few comments on the results:

  • Not too surprising that the Ravens were the only team of the ten I looked at with a 27/23 balance favoring the defense.
  • 4 of the 10 teams went with only 2 QB's with the Ravens joining this trend.
  • The Jets carrying 7 RB seems odd.
  • The pass first Colts carry only 4 WR but kept 5 TE.
  • On defense - the Jets again surprise with 14 DL/LB and 10 DB's.  Average for this group is 16 DL/LB and 9 DB.  Rex is always different.
  • The Steelers, Dolphins and Saints also kept 10 DB's.

I found this interesting and thought I would put it out there.  I would be interested in your comments on how the Ravens make roster decisions vs. other teams.

What the hell do you need 7 RB’s for?

Run-first team?

And fullbacks? I’m not really sure, Rex is an oddball sort.

5 Running Backs and 2 FB’s? Probably should have used one of those spots for a 5th WR.

They do

have Santonio coming back in Week 5, perhaps they’ll cut a RB to make room for him.
And come on, let’s not kid ourselves here, it’s not like Sanchez needs 5 receivers…

Sure he does

Increases the chance one of his throws actually ends up near a receiver.

Lol.

Maybe he should just give the ball to Shonn Greene and let The Terminator block for him.

I like how us and everyone else has talked about our high powered offense yet we have the lowest offensive total and highest defensive total of the teams stated above. This is still a defensive minded team.

The Ravens signed another cornerback he was a orginally on the cowboys team

but he got cut he really good at kick/punt returns also very fast check him out here http://www.nationalfootballpost.com/Agent-Ravens-claim-Bryan-McCann.html . I was also wonder if the ravens maybe still interested in another wideout becuase David Reed and Marcus Smith maynot get it done when they may need a play; Donte Stallworth will be gone for a month and you never no what may happen to there other top wideouts, so since Kelly Washington is available I wonder if they be interested in bringing him back

Wow, disappointing. Was looking forward to seeing Prince do his thing.

Kelly Washington? Seriously?

Not sure what you’re smoking, but don’t pass it this way.

The Jets are stupid.

7 Running backs? Really?

hahahaha

I can see it now. The 0-11-0 formation. AKA, “the blob of 50-somethings defense,” as pioneered by Mangenius.

Don't Laugh

I have seen the Ravens line up on defense with only one down DL. Granted it was in special circumstances, but still…

Cleveland has 12 LBs. Name 3. That’s right, I know.

Looks like we have a balanced but

defensively minded team.

Exactly what I was expecting. Don’t kid yourselves guys we’re a defensive team only now instead of a defensive team with great rushing we’re a defensive team with a beastly overall offense.
