Ravens Announce 53 Man Roster
The Baltimore Ravens had to make a bunch of tough decisions today in trimming the roster down to the required 53 man maximum. Placing Ed Reed on the PUP List opened another slot for a guy who otherwise probably would be without a job today. There is sure to be tons of debate on those last few slots and who filled them versus who was let go. Some of the cuts may be re-signed to the team's Practice Squad but most will go home, wait for another team to call and then go out and join the same workforce most of us are part of.
Here is the Ravens' 53 man roster in alphabetical order, including the PUP List, Injured Reserve and Injured/Unsigned (Sergio Kindle). Go to BaltimoreRavens.com to see this and other related news.

I’m very happy with the final roster…
I think they made all of the right decisions. I was a little surprised to see Talavou and Harewood on IR, but I think that was more because they want to stash those two for next year (like Phillips last season). I also agree with the choice of Cundiff, who clearly beat Graham in camp. I think a full off-season with an NFL team has really helped Cundiff. He’s taken full advantage of it and really improved. For the first time since they cut Stover, I’m confident in our kicker situation.
Finally, we really need to commend the Ravens for making the hard decisions. They cut Troy and Demetrius even though those weren’t the conservative decisions. Keeping only two QB’s is risky but the right move in my opinion. The same can be said about keeping Reed over the more experienced Williams. They are taking risks, and I totally agree. Real championship teams need to be aggressive.

Yea, it is definitely risky but also has its benefits with a team like ours. We did it in 2006 with McNair and Boller and it paid off then.

Here I wouldn’t necessarily call it a risk, but more like an opportunity for both sides. It gives us a chance to break away with someone who wasn’t living up to the expectations and allows for us to see 2 new guys who came into the league with the same draft status Williams had. The coaches love Smith and also have alot of trust in Reed it seems. So much more excited to see one of these guys step it up than I am another year of “throw the ball 40 yards in the air into double coverage and hope D-Will jumps out the gym for it.”
We're playing the waiver game better
Think the team has learned from not getting Andersen on the practice squad and are appropriately being aggressive with IR and keeping young talent.
Barnes trade makes sense
Ozzie doesn’t like to waste those picks, so he makes them count. All the picks were used in positions of need, so that played into it very much.
Davon Drew was also cut. He spent a bit of time as a Dolphin before making his way to our practice squad.
Water covers 2/3 of the Earth's surface. Ed Reed covers the rest.
If cutting two of eight draft picks is “Ouch!,” then what is two out of six?

Have you ever heard a cow when he is in a slaughter house? My guess is something like that.

But you also have to remember that usually 2-3 of our draft picks turn into damn good players where with the Browns……not so much.
actually
they tried to sneak Drew onto the PS, but he got snagged by Miami. They cut him shortly after though. Btw, I believe Peerman was looking he was going to make someone’s roster this year, cant remember who though.

Yes
Peerman is developing in the Bengals system. He could actually make a contribution this season for the Bungals.
Nice to see Art Jones make it
I know he’ll probably be deactivated for most games, but I’m happy to see the kid stick. He’s a warrior, and his alma mater is 1-0 for the first time in 7 years. He’s probably a happy man today.

Some thoughts on players inside the 53
Ozzie hsa assembled a talented team but it’s not without risk. Start with the decision to keep 2 QB’s. Based on what I saw in camp and the pre-season Troy Smith did not deserve to make this team. Frankly, I was disappointed in his play. Smith never showed command of the offense when given his opportunities. Will he return if an injury occurs?
I was surprised that David Reed made the cut. Reed didn’t show much at camp. His draft status and the Stallworth/Demetrius Williams injuries I think helped. Reed does have talent. Maybe Reed would have made it thru waivers. When I watch David Reed, I don’t see a player ready for the bright lights in the big city. I’m good with Marcus Smith remaining on this roster. He runs well and if called upon could be the guy who’s the clearout WR that streches the field.
On defense the rookie Prince Miller flashed. He showed some suddenness and quick twitch. Looks like a player that could develop into something down the road. Sure, he lacks prototypical height but he has insticts and you can’t teach that!
The absence of Ed Reed in the deep middle of the field will hurt. I don’t share quite the same enthusiam about Ed Reed’s replacement. Zbi’s developing into a fine NFL player but he is not Ed Reed. No one is. Teams will attack much more confidently, stressing and stretching the secondary. We’re about to really find out if Zbi’s ready. OC’s will game plan in an attempt to exploit Reed’s absence the first 6 weeks of the season.
Some changes are forthcoming as every 53 man roster changes around the league. I’m confident that this team has the talent and moxie to be a Champion. Another NFL season is upon us. Let the games begin!
Reed showed a lot for his little time. He is a tough dude. He has great breaks out and is quick. Far better than straight line runner D-Will. I think he’ll be a good one for us. Our 2 freak TE’s will replace D-Wills height and take over the Cam jump balls on the right corner end zone (terrible play butchered by Billick).
Tough choice t release draft picks
and Reed and Art Jones didn’t overly impress but have huge upsides, while guys released had their chances. Some guys will come back next week onto Practice Squad or re-signed at better prices after 1st game. Watch what happens after week one to our roster, as well as other teams’.

Having been a Heisman winner Troy received little to know attention from the networks for being cut. Leinhart was all over th news. Too bad Troy wasn’t a popular little California girl like Matt or maybe he could have had some face time. Anyways, Troy made no progress and had to go. I’m sure they tried everything from receiver to Safety to see if could fit in anywhere. I guess he wasn’t a rounded player. He’ll get picked up quick by someone..probably a turf team. I can see him in Dallas or S. Louis.
Not real happy about keeping Gooden. He hasn’t grown into the position and might be released when Sergio gets healthy..if ever.
Troy was an afterthought draft pick,
Leinhart was a 1sr round “can’t miss” guy – supposedly. No comparison. Leinhart will catch on, somewhere, although he had every chance to be the man in AZ for a long time. Gooden probably made it on Special Teams and the fact that Barnes is gone and yes, Kindle is injured. The switch to safety thing for him is a joke, though.

Leinart can't play (raven open the door so I'm coming in)
Quick, name one USC QB that has done anything in the NFL not named Carson Palmer in the last 20 years. Right zero. Please don’t mention Mark Sanchez (he was hidden in the offense last season by the ground game in Gotham City).
You have to go back to Pat Haden to find one that was worthy of being considered above average outside of Palmer. I’ve watched Leinart for many years. He is not anything more than a marginal back-up QB at best. He posesses no intangibles, lacks a deep ball arm, isn’t particularly accurate on short to intermidiate throws, can’t escape initial or secondary pass-rush pressure, alienates teammates and coaches and has never takes any responsibilty for his play. The short of it is…….the guy’s a bust. If to whom much is given…..much is expected is the old saying then Leinart’s a huge disappointment. It can take up to 5-7 years for a franchise to recover from a miss at QB in the 1st round.
They’ve got a conundrum in the desert. I’m just happy we don’t have to be concerned with such matters.
I wouldn’t even consider Palmer doing anything special. Sure he has some nice stats, but no playoff victories.
Well
MaLor, the guy has caused us some problems.

Matt Cassel?

Matt Cassel
Cassel is a one hit wonder (2008 in New England). One season does not make a career. He has a lot of same traits that Leinart has. Cassel is limited as passer and is most effective in a spread attack. With Cassel at QB Thomas Jones is a lot less effective. Only 2 running plays can effectively be run from spread———a draw and a trap.
Quick, name one USC QB that has done anything in the NFL not named Carson Palmer in the last 20 years. Right zero. Please don’t mention Mark Sanchez (he was hidden in the offense last season by the ground game in Gotham City).
Cassel had 1 good year, that is considered doing something in the league. You didn’t ask if they had solid careers, just if they did anything.
I stated that Cassel was a career backup at SC, behind 2 first rounders in Carson and Leinart.
by Rayisyourdaddy on Sep 5, 2010 4:39 PM EDT up reply actions
My contention is
Cassel didn’t carry that offense. The weapons in that offense would have allowed you to be effective (okay that a stretch). They won in spite of Cassel and not because of him. If memory serves me correctly, the Patriots ran a more conventional offense and Cassel played poorly. They went to a spread to simply the progressions/reads for Cassel. The detached formation allowed Cassel to look and play better. He parlayed that into the current contract in KC.
How has Cassel looked minus Welker, Moss, McDaniels and the cocoon that was the NE Patriots staff? You don’t win the Cassel’s and Leinart’s of the world.
Correction?
I thought Matt Cassel did nothing in USC. Before Tom Brady got injured, he didnt start since high school I believe.

The new thing in NFL
Geting younger and cheaper. The lack of CBA and the state of the economy has a lot of teams going conservative fiscally. I don’t think bodes well for the product of the field long term. Cut corners by trading proven talent or dropping vested veterans in order to save on salaries can have ramifications. Ozzie, in my opinion does one hell of a job balacing these things out though.
Portion of Ravens Official Press Release:
Sept. 4, 2010
For Immediate Release
RAVENS ROSTER MOVES
The Baltimore Ravens reduced their roster to the required 53 players today. The team decided to keep two quarterbacks (Joe Flacco and Marc Bulger) on the roster, and Billy Cundiff won the highly-competitive battle for the team’s placekicking job. OLB Antwan Barnes, a fourth-year player who was selected by the Ravens in the fourth round of the 2007 NFL Draft, was traded to Philadelphia for an undisclosed 2011 draft choice.
In announcing the roster, general manager and executive vice president Ozzie Newsome explained the decision to go with two quarterbacks: "The competition to make our team was very heated, and we decided to keep a position player rather than a third quarterback. We have a number of young guys who made our team who have tremendous upside, plus they can help us win this year. We’ve gone with two quarterbacks before (last time was 2006)," Newsome said.
Head coach John Harbaugh talked about the decision to keep Cundiff over Shayne Graham: "First, congratulations to Billy. He won a great competition, and he earned this spot. We’ve talked about this the entire preseason: Both Billy and Shayne rose to the occasion and performed at high levels. We know Shayne will kick in the league, but we feel very good about the decision to go with Billy."
Pro Bowl safety Ed Reed was moved from the Physically Unable to Perform Active List to Reserve PUP. He will be eligible to return to the active roster after the first six weeks of the season
.

You would think any Heisman winner would garner some attention being cut. Kind of news worthy. About Troy being a safety, yeah crazy statement but with his abilities and our shallow receiving corps out side of #3 you’d think he was looked at for anoher position? I don’t know, I don’t have a Coachman parked next to training camp like Bruce.

nah, never a qb
not that high. i play 2 qb leagues with 6 pts per td, the top 5 picks are all rb’s, then qb’s start coming off the board.

Rodgers outscored everybody (in a 6 pt per passing td league) by a lot last season. Generally I agree with the theory of always taking a RB first, but you’d honestly take Gore over him?
yes the difference btwn Gore and the next tier of backs is much larger than the diff btwn Rodgers and a QB like Romo, Brady, or Rivers.

Sucks for Prince ...
… but this way we get two young CB’s by taking a Dallas PS guy for our 53 and moving Prince to PS.
That’s a pretty hefty salary hit for Prince ($325K minimum rookie salary vs. $88.4K on PS) but a nice way for the Ravens to build some depth.
It will be interesting to see what they do after Cary Williams comes off suspension in after week 2.
"What we've got here is failure to communicate."
I think Williams makes the 45 for sure. They really like this guy and it was starting to show this off season. Week 3 will be the Browns game, so we will be able to take it easy for that game since we have Pitt the next week and get Williams acclimated.
Season who is going to start. Webb and Wilson I think. Fabian will hold down the slot. I think we may end up trading a corner by the deadline.

hes a CB
from Dallas. He apparently led the team (or maybe just secondary) in tackles during the preseason. They cut him hoping they could get him on their practice squad, but Ozzie spotted him and stole him away. Hopefully good things come of it, he’s a rookie btw

he also led the team in kick return average I think. Sounds like a nice little pick up. Certainly not losing much by cutting Prince Miller if nothing else
wierd, Dallas only kept 3 CB’s on the roster.
Hey played for SMU last year, looks like a solid player from his Wiki page.
Also he is a speedy corner. Ran a 4.28 at the combine. And had a 40 inch vertical jump. He is a freak.

They traded a 1st rounder in the 2010 draft (14th in the end) for a 2nd rounder which they used on Smith, and after 1 year gave up on him and traded him for a TE who was taken in the 7th round of the same draft. Wow! so pathetic!

Also, FYI, Dolphins just cut their 2009 2nd and 4th rounders, Pat White and Patrick Turner (Jets picked him up to play with Sanchize, his college QB). So they did pick up their starting CB’s, a starting WR, and a starting safety in this draft, but cutting 2 high round picks after a year is kind of sad! See, in Ozzie we trust!
It’s funny how we had what was called the weakest secondary. By midseason the ravens cud have the deepest and best secondary in the league. May have too many corners but that’s a good problem to have.
