Ravens Cut Troy Smith, Demetrius Williams
In what appears to be a pair of relatively surprising moves, the Baltimore Ravens cut veteran reserve QB Troy Smith and WR Demetrius Williams. The team decided to keep a position player rather than a third QB and Williams release was probably as much due to the other wideouts in camp as it was to his inability to stay healthy and be consistent in the passing game.
A bunch of other moves included rookie OT Ramon Harewood being placed on Injured Reserve (IR) along with guard Stefan Rodgers. Other cuts included RB Curtis Steele, CB K.J. Gerard, WR Justin Harper, OG Bryan Mattison, OT Joe Reitz, LB Albert McClellan, and WR Eron Riley.
It will be interesting to see what other moves the team will make to finalize their opening day roster and put together their Practice Squad. Congrats to the guys who made the team and good luck to those who did not in finding work elsewhere in the league or joining most of us in the rat race!

Ravens Cut Troy Smith…
But I heard he did so well in that last game.
Water covers 2/3 of the Earth's surface. Ed Reed covers the rest.
Finally got his wish ...
… so guess he is now crawling to Cleveland
"What we've got here is failure to communicate."
He was...
But just as he crawled onto I-70, a tractor and trailer came from his blind side… I don’t want to talk about it.

And I thought winning a Heisman automatically meant you’d be a NFL Legend.

Final Roster
PUP and IR list posed on Ravens Website
"What we've got here is failure to communicate."
media botched the roster cuts earlier today, reporting Prince Miller was cut when he wasn’t. Not that anybody outside the top 45 players has much of a guaranteed spot, the team probably cuts Hamlin whenever Reed comes back.
I wouldn’t immeadiately say Hamlin is gone when Reed gets back, as a vested veteran they have to pay his entire salary if they cut him. I actually could see them cutting a young CB and keeping 5 Safeties, we’ve seen that Ruki can be used in nickel situations so he can be used as an extra CB when needed.

I can see us getting rid of Ruki. I don’t see us cutting any of our CBs

Harbs really likes Ruki, so I doubt he’d be cut. Last season we were carrying 5 safeties, thought KJ Gerard was a S/CB tweener. I don’t want to count on an injury, but odds are by the time guys can come off the PUP list someone will be ready to go on IR so it would be a moot point.

I'm really excited that Prince Miller made the roster
He brings a dynamic impact to kick-return, and the fact that he’s expendable at CB is even better. That way if he gets injured, our secondary won’t suffer like they did when Webb went down last year.

He will be doing punt returns most likely. Will be interesting…

It would also be nice to see him develop into a good CB

The 8 inactives for the Jets Game
-Stallworth through week 8
-David Reed or Prince Miller (one can be a return man)
-probably 1 of these 3: Moll, Cousins, Or Gaither (not chester)
-probably Dennis Pitta
-Arthur Jones
-Jason Phillips
-Burgess or EJones (one will be special teams ace)
-Divens or Mckinney (thought Mckinney played his way onto the 45, plus Talavou IR helps him)
Strange how?
The only number that seems a bit odd to me would be the 2 QBs, but I hoped that Smith would be cut. The only reason the Ravens would need a 3rd QB is if Flacco gets hurt, and I think that they can find talent comparable to Smith in free agency if they need to while using the roster spot to keep an extra body in the secondary or at WR. It’s neither the first time the Ravens kept only 2 QBs nor are the Ravens the only team to do so.

Why? If Flacco and Bulger go down, we might as well put Clayton in behind center, because our Super Bowl drive would be over.

What I mean,
is they would only need that 3rd QB (counting Flacco) would be if he got hurt. I don’t mean they’d have 3 QBs and Flacco, but that they’d have Flacco, Bulger and some scrub.

That's a wretchedly put together sentence.
would be
"Believe me, I know the save rule and, quite frankly, it doesn’t carry much weight with me. I like the win rule a little bit better."

What I’m saying is that there’s no point in carrying a third quarterback at all. Use that roster spot for somebody that helps us get to the Super Bowl. If we’re in a position where we actually need to have that third quarterback, we’re screwed anyways. If we get into that scenario, we could bring Troy Smith back in from the UFL and let him suck it up against starters like he’s always wanted and console ourselves with a better draft pick.

Not necessarily true.
If Flacco gets hurt and can’t dress one week, they’d need to sign a 3rd QB to back up Bulger. Unless you’re saying that they should dress Clayton as a QB, which is ridiculous. I don’t think that the Super Bowl hopes would be destroyed if Bulger had to start for a single week either.
Back from the UFL? You don’t think an NFL team takes him as their 3rd QB? I’d think at least one team may take a chance on him. I’d imagine there are teams that wouldn’t be willing to give anything up for him in a trade but may be willing to sign him when they don’t have to give up a pick or player. Granted, I didn’t watch his apparently terrible performance Thursday.

If Flacco gets hurt and can’t dress one week, they’d need to sign a 3rd QB to back up Bulger.
Last year, when there was much less Super Bowl hype, the organization made the decision to drive Flacco into the ground via injuries rather than trust even one game against the likes of the Raiders to a mediocre-at-best quarterback like Troy Smith. When the game plan against New England called for a pass-to-rush ratio less than 1:5, they still kept a crippled Flacco in the game in lieu of letting Smith hand it off for sixty minutes.
I can’t see that philosophy changing this year when it seems like expectations are so much higher. If Flacco becomes injured enough that Harbaugh decides to sit him for one game, the evidence shows that Flacco would probably go back in if Bulger were also injured. With so much quality competition in the AFC, let alone in the AFC North, it doesn’t make sense to put in a scrub unless all other contingencies have failed.
Back from the UFL?
In free agency, Smith could have been had by any team in the NFL for a measly fifth-round pick. Since the demand was demonstrably not there, the price necessarily had to drop. It’s hard to say what ridiculously low price Ozzie wanted for him after free agency, but Smith’s only serious competition on the depth chart went for a scrub’s scrub of a corner back. Basically, Smith can either sign with an NFL team and spend the season deactivated every game (barring some kind of absolute disaster, of course), or he can go to the UFL and actually play some football. I don’t really care what he decides, but, given his general attitude as a competitor, I think he may be approaching the point where he doesn’t really care where he is as long as he gets to play.

Troy Smith and D. Williams cut?
Dreams really do come true. Thank you Ravens for doing the right thing. Those guys will get a shot elsewhere. Let someone else have them chew up roster spots! Go Ravens!
My thoughts exactly
There wasn’t one person cut today that I feel shouldn’t have been. Now if we could only get some miraculous news about Kindle coming back to fill Barnes spot. Yeah I know……….but a man can dream right?

Note to Ozzie Newsome
Draft CB Patrick Peterson out of LSU next year. My eyes have orgasim’s when I see him return kicks.

If so, that dude looks really good.

I demand physical evidence
if that happens.
But I would happily accept a game-changing returner, the likes of which we haven’t really had since Jermaine Lewis.

We might....
have that already in Josh “Pistol” Wilson! He is a sick returner, watch the youtube video, he just doesn’t go down easy!

I hadn't
even thought about that. Although, if Wilson ends up starting at some point, I’m not sure I feel comfortable with him returning kicks. Do we know who the starting PR is?

Let Miller do the PR in the beginning of the season, except in a time of need (close game), then put in Pistol. Once Webb is fully back and Cary is back too, then maybe you risk Wilson as a returner IF Prince is not cutting it.

no way
we would give up barnes for just a 7th. we got that much for prescott burgess. a 6th/conditional 5th is fair.

Don't shoot the messenger
I’m just repeating what was posted by a few beat writers at the time the trade went down. Granted both links (which on here ) were from Twitter pages so take it at what you will.
Plus a side note one of the guys was a reporter for the NFC East so he might have just assumed that the Eagles wouldn’t give up much for Barnes because he didn’t know much about him.
