Nice move.

We were getting a bit crowded at LB… as usual. I wonder what we got for him.

But Barnes was one of our better guys. Who backs up Suggs and JJ now? Kruger?

by Mr MaLoR on Sep 4, 2010 12:53 PM EDT up reply actions

Yeah I’m a bit confused by this move as well. With Kindle out can we really afford to lose a good another good pass rusher?

It’s not worth keeping a guy like Barnes as a backup/situational pass-rusher. He would start for almost any team but the Ravens.

The compensation you can receive versus the contribution is the reason they traded him. I’m guessing they (at least) recovered the pick from the Wilson trade. I would be surprised at all if they did better.

by BAL_Hawk on Sep 4, 2010 12:58 PM EDT up reply actions

McClain has backed up Suggs in the past. Even if we had kept Barnes, McClain probably would have been the primary guy filling in for Suggs. Let’s not forget that the Ravens do not play their OLB’s as pure pass-rushers. They need to be able to set the edge against the run, and as good as Barnes was at pass-rushing, he was not very good against the run.

Therefore, the Ravens probably would have used McClain at OLB and had Gooden and Ellerbe cover the ILB position even if Barnes was on the roster. That’s the beauty of have so many young, versatile linebackers. Really, Barnes was the only pure pass-rusher. Maybe that’s why the Ravens were comfortable with trading him.

by BAL_Hawk on Sep 4, 2010 7:23 PM EDT up reply actions

So

has Ellerbe taken back the MLB spot next to Ray?

No… Only if Suggs were injured.

by BAL_Hawk on Sep 4, 2010 8:55 PM EDT up reply actions

Ok.

Been away for a week or so, unsure what happened while I was gone. Except for Ellerbe celebrating early. That I saw.

What Harbs has said...

is that they’re pretty much going to use Ellerbe, McClain, and Gooden based on the situation they’re in to fill the hole next to Ray with whoever has the best skill set for the formation and play they’re using.

Jesus. We got screwed. Maybe Ozzie does get trade raped…

by Mr MaLoR on Sep 4, 2010 2:38 PM EDT up reply actions

Whatever, man. I liked Barnes, but what did he really ever do as a Raven? He was a situational pass-rusher and never really fit the Ravens’ mold as an OLB. He just isn’t strong enough against the run to be a full-time, every-down guy.

I admit that I was hoping he would develop into something special, but realistically, that wasn’t ever going to happen in Baltimore. I’m glad the Ravens got something for him while they could. Good luck in Philly, Antwan!

Kind of upset about this move. I was really looking forward to seeing what Barnes was going to do this year with Kindle out. Hurts our pass rush.

by Mr MaLoR on Sep 4, 2010 12:53 PM EDT reply actions

Wow - surprised

Barnes was a solid pass rusher who always seemed to find his way to the opponent’s QB. Thought Edgar Jones would go before him. Good news for Prescott Burgess, Jason Phillips and others, though.

by Bruce Raffel on Sep 4, 2010 12:55 PM EDT reply actions

Screw Prescott. Get him outta here. And Phillips is a MLB. We really have no one behind Suggs now. Albery McClellan or whatever his name is. That’s it? Maybe sign Adalius?

by Mr MaLoR on Sep 4, 2010 12:57 PM EDT up reply actions

I wouldn’t mind seeing Adalius in Purple & Black again.

by StuckInUtah on Sep 4, 2010 12:59 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions

Chill out, man. Ozzie knows what he’s doing… especially with linebackers. We haven’t been screwed yet.

Barnes was good to be sure, but the future of the team is on Ozzie’s shoulders… not ours. That’s way more important than any player.

by BAL_Hawk on Sep 4, 2010 1:00 PM EDT up reply actions

I know we will be alright. Just confused by the move and all we have behind Barnes as of now is a bunch of MLB.

by Mr MaLoR on Sep 4, 2010 1:01 PM EDT up reply actions

But I guess think about it this way.

We traded Barnes for Wilson, which isn’t too bad of a deal. We were all debating a guy like Barnes for a CB.

by Mr MaLoR on Sep 4, 2010 1:02 PM EDT up reply actions

I bet we received better compensation for Barnes. Ozzie doesn’t get trade-raped.

by BAL_Hawk on Sep 4, 2010 1:06 PM EDT up reply actions

He’s the Roethlisburger of trading.

by BAL_Hawk on Sep 4, 2010 1:06 PM EDT up reply actions

Yea, I say a conditional 4th with it dropping down to a 3rd based on Barnes tearing it up, which I think he will do. They got some serious speed on the edges with Barnes and their rookie.

I wouldn’t mind bringing Adalius back, finish off his career as a Raven.

I’ll wait and see what we get in return before I form an opinion.

This does hurt our pass rush though.

by mlb32001 on Sep 4, 2010 12:56 PM EDT reply actions

It has to be at least a 4th round pick, because that is what Barnes was for us and has only increased his value. I am thinking a conditional 4th.

by Mr MaLoR on Sep 4, 2010 12:58 PM EDT up reply actions

It'll probably end up being worth it.

What’s the latest on Kindle? Are most just assuming he won’t be available for us this season?

by mlb32001 on Sep 4, 2010 1:00 PM EDT up reply actions

Hope it was a high pick

We are crowded at LB but I’d rather have released a guy like Burgess than trade Barnes for a trash pick.

by Roa on Sep 4, 2010 1:01 PM EDT reply actions

Picks are not trash. Look at Ozzie’s draft history. They would have lost Barnes in a year or two anyway. He will want a starting job somewhere.

Next season, they can now draft a player like Dickson, Pitta, Zbikowski, Nakamura, Chester… I could go on and on.

by BAL_Hawk on Sep 4, 2010 1:05 PM EDT up reply actions

Are you kidding me? Ozzie is a master at drafting good players. If anything we just got better.

The Orioles are going to open a can of Buck-Wieser on your ass......

by Zachary Beard on Sep 4, 2010 1:07 PM EDT up reply actions

That I agree with Ozzie being an incredible drafter

but I’ve heard 7th round and there is really not much you can do with that even you are the guy that bent Denver over a table without consent a few months ago.

by Roa on Sep 5, 2010 12:26 AM EDT up reply actions

The 7th round pick hasn’t been confirmed.

by BAL_Hawk on Sep 5, 2010 8:09 AM EDT up reply actions

So a 3rd, 4th, or 5th?

Because If he went for anything less then that, we just got screwed.

The Orioles are going to open a can of Buck-Wieser on your ass......

by Zachary Beard on Sep 4, 2010 1:06 PM EDT reply actions

I doubt a 5th. Barnes was a 4th round pick and has only shown promise since then. Has to be atleast a 4th.

by Mr MaLoR on Sep 4, 2010 1:08 PM EDT up reply actions

A 3rd would be nice. Becuase 2-3 rounds is where Ozzie makes his magic.

The Orioles are going to open a can of Buck-Wieser on your ass......

by Zachary Beard on Sep 4, 2010 1:09 PM EDT up reply actions

no way in hell

we got a 3rd for him. likely a 5th., maybe conditional 4th.

then again, youre the same guy who would have given a 2nd rounder for Wilson.

From ESPN

Barnes, a fourth round selection in 2007, said on his Twitter page, “Woooooooo……..I had a good run in Baltimore……thank everyone for your support……its a new beginning and I’m ready to be a eagle…”

an Eagle*

This is why players like us

we treat our players very fairly. We gave Antwan his shot, he couldn’t fit in, so we let him to go a team where he could further his career. Players notice this stuff in FA and also when negotiating rookie contracts. We’re a great team to play for at any point in your career.

Agreed. We do that a lot. To name a few: Bannan, D. Edwards, and Leonard.

Aubrayo Franklin as well.

Who knew the latter half of the preseason would be so exciting. I think it’s at these times franchises make the most definitive decisions. In our case, the decisions all seemed to be made at the right time.

Kevin Byrne’s article on Baltimoreravens.com describes how the Wilson deal has been in the making since before the draft. They just don’t make any desperation moves (i.e. Antonio Bryant), and they stay away from situations where they’d need to (i.e. Terrell Owens). I think it all has to do with patience and knowing how the NFL system works. The Ravens do it as good as anyone.

by Keith R on Sep 4, 2010 2:25 PM EDT reply actions

Does anyone else have another source backing up the 7th round pick? Because that just seems incredibly wrong.

Damn. I guess he was gonna be outright cut and this was the best deal? Oh well. I’m sure the Wizard of Oz will work some of his magic before this day is done.

Hopefully they know something positive about Sergio Kindle that we don’t know.

He may come back

I know we don’t want to risk his overall health, but I think he might end up going on the PUP.

Strike that, I’m sure this has come up before on here but I forgot; how does Kindle count against our 53 man roster since he’s not signed? We just hold the rights for him so nothing right? At least until we sign him?

A Ravens fan on the wrong side of the country!!

by Christopher Atwood on Sep 4, 2010 3:02 PM EDT up reply actions

Kindle has not signed a contract with the Ravens, who exclusively hold his rights. This situation isn’t all that different from an extended rookie hold-out, like Crabtree last season. Kindle doesn’t count against the 53 man roster yet. My guess is that they plan on releasing Jones or Burgess when Kindle signs and joins the team.

It’s in the best interest of the Ravens and Kindle to get a contract signed. If the Ravens don’t sign him, he’ll go back into the pool of players to be drafted next year and their draft pick is forfeited. That would be bad news for Kindle too because it would be highly unlikely for him to be drafted any higher than the second round next year and he would receive no compensation at all for this year. Basically, a contract will be signed once both parties agree to the amount of the contract, which will be less due to the off-season incident.

by BAL_Hawk on Sep 4, 2010 10:21 PM EDT up reply actions

Don't worry

I’m betting he gets signed soon, Kindle has already mentioned on his Twitter (of course that depends how reliable you consider that) that he’s been assigned a Jersey Number so I’d better we hear about him getting signed shortly.

However, they may also wait until he’s fully recovered from his fall so that when he joins the roster he’s ready to practice and participate on the field.

by Christopher Atwood on Sep 4, 2010 10:39 PM EDT up reply actions

Yeah… I just read that tweet. He says that he’ll be on the field “sometime next month” and will be wearing number 94.

That’s very, very intriguing… I’m sure that went into the Ravens’ decision to trade Barnes.
