Fantasy Football: Where Does Ravens' Ray Rice Go in the Draft?
For those fantsy football fans out there, the draft is the key moment of the entire season What happens in those few hours prior to the season beginning sets the tone on where your team will finish. Where you pick in the first round and who you take will determine your strategy for the rest of the draft. If you have the first pick or two, you know you're probably taking either Minnesota Vikings RB Adrian Peterson or Tennessee TitansRB Chris Johnson. After that, it's debatable where you will go if you have one of the next two or three picks. Do you take Jacksonville Jaguars Maurice Jones-Drew or Baltimore Ravens RB Ray Rice. Lots of Ravens fans will go for the home team kid but others will take MJD and his consistency over the past few years.

I got the first pick in my draft and I felt compelled to pick up CJ. But if I had the second pick, I definitely would have picked Ray. I dislike Adrian Peterson immensely and while MJD is consistent, he just doesn’t seem to have the explosiveness that Rice has.
As a side note, I had a Ravens homer in my draft. Q went in the first round and the Ravens D went in the 3rd. It ended up being that the only real Ravens option I could pick would have been Dickson or Pitta. I didn’t feel like either one of them would be a consistent starter on this team so I grabbed Gresham on the Bungles for a backup instead. Right choice or no?
5th or later overall pick
Brees
Manning
CJ
AP (Conditional,Farve Returns)
Rodgers
Ray Rice
The order might be jumbled up, but I feel safe thinking those 6 will be better picks the Ray,
Not a good move
To take a QB over Rice would be foolish in my opinion. In rounds 2-4 you can surely get an elite fantasy QB (Rodgers, Brees, Manning, Romo, Brady, Rivers…) but you won’t be able to get an elite back, as there are only four this year (CJ,AP,Rice, MJD).
Depends on the league I'd say.
Personally, I prefer a league that favors QBs over WRs and RBs (i.e. 6 pts for a TD pass instead of 4). In which case, Ray won’t go in the top 4, not with Brees, Manning, Brady, Rodgers and CJ and AP. But in a league with “traditional” scoring, I could see him going 1 or 2.

And by 1 or 2,
I clearly meant 3 or 4….

I had a draft yesterday morning and swooped up Rice with the 3rd pick, with MJD and AP still in the board. Believe it or not AP didn’t go til the 6th pick. Apparently everyone in my league is crazy about QB’s. So I just sat tight, picked up Benson as well, and still ended up with Rivers and the Ravens D. I think I got this one in the bag.

Whch will help or hurt AP?
Without Favre AP will be counted on to take more of a load. At the same time,, opponents will stack the box and expect him to run.
aka 'Rexx'
hard to predict
I think Favre helps him. But you could argue to the contrary.

CJ wen’t first, than Brady (I know, I’laughed). I took Rice 3rd, and next thing I know Brees and Manning were off the board. I mean I would’ve easily taken Rodgers over those three, given what experts expect out of Rodger this year. But before you know it I’m sitting with the 24th overrall pick and Benson still sitting on the board? I had to take him. And for the very same reason no one should pick up a QB too early, I ended up with a somewhat elite QB in Rivers in the third round. Basically I’m just saying that only 2-3 QB’s are going to put up huge numbers that deserve a 1st round pick, but there’s a huge tier where those others are going to give you what you need every weeek IMO. Don’t fail me now “Little Ray”.

yeah that sounds like a beastly team

Has to be top 4
If you get a top four pick you better take one of the four sure thing back (AP,CJ, Rice, MJD). How you list those guys is a based on personal preference and scoring of your league, but you can’t really go wrong. If you have a top four pick and bypass one of those guys, it will be a big mistake.
Having a top four pick (preferably 3 or 4) is a huge advantage because every back after them is either in a serious platoon, or not a sure thing (age, injury, or possible talent concerns).
Only one person is better than Ray
and that would be Chris Johnson. I picked him 2nd overall in a ten person league. I’d take ray over chris if it were a PPR league with a number one pick.
- Dedicated Raven since 2003 -
Ray Rice caught 78 passes last year
chances are slim that he will catch that many again.
MJD, on the other hand, was and remains now his team’s main offensive threat. There isn’t anyone else on that offense who will take the ball away from him. Ergo, Fantasy MJD > Fantasy RR

I'd take Rice in the late 1st or early 2nd
Last year the big drawback with him was that McGahee ate up the goal-line carries, and took away a great deal of fantasy points as a result. The backfield hasn’t changed at all this year and so I think that problem will carry over.
The upside to Rice was that he was a dependable go-to receiver out of the backfield and made up for his lack of goal-line touches with his considerable receiving yards. With Boldin and Stallworth joining the receiving corps this year, he’s probably not going to be nearly as active in the passing game.
I’d rather take CJohnson, Peterson, MJD, Jackson, Brees, and Manning ahead of him.

We'll see about that
He carried my team last year, but it’s a lot easier to rake in points when you’re the centerpiece of the offense.

The centerpiece of the ground game, yes, but
the passing game has changed substantially this year. Before, he was the go-to man when Mason wasn’t open. Now we’ve got a handful of dependable receivers, and I can almost guarantee you that Rice won’t be getting nearly as many looks when Flacco drops back to throw.

yeah and he's getting old (by RB standards)
his O-Line is ASS, and he’s the only consistent offensive threat his team has. Rookie QB too. He’s too risky. His performance could fall off a cliff any year now.

Rice v. Jones-Drew
I still like Jones-Drew better in a non-PPR league. The difference between Rice and Jones-Drew is Rice has McGahee stealing touchdowns. Rice should have a monster year, but won’t break the top three as long as McGahee is playing well.
