NFL Statement on the Michael Vick Incident in Virginia

Commissioner Goodell informed Michael Vick today (Tuesday, August 3) at Eagles camp that there will be no disciplinary action as a result of the incident in Virginia, based on his current understanding of the facts. Commissioner Goodell spoke several weeks ago by phone with Michael, Tony Dungy, and Eagles Coach Andy Reid. All were in agreement on the need for additional support measures to be added to Michael's plan to enhance his opportunity to succeed in life and football. These additional steps will remain confidential, but they will require Michael to meet even higher standards.

I never understood Dungy’s connection to Vick. Like why does he mentor him? He was never a player for him.

Dungy is just a good dude

He saw Vick was in a bad place and thought he could help him. Dungy is a very religious guy and believes in second chances. Thats all the reason he needed to reach out to Vick.

Excellent point

However, Vick has not shown himself to worthy of Dungy’s considerable clout and support. Vick is an embarrasment ala Big Ben and deserves to be cut, not base on his talent (he has a winning record as an NFL QB) but his stupidty.

Vick jeopardized every thing he established, put Andy Reid in bind along with the Eagles organization and for what———a birthday party. You have got to be kidding me! You can’t be trusted by any organization or a leader of men when you make bone-headed decision the way Vick does. I don’t think Vick gets it. The only reason that Vick is employed in my opinion is the youth/inexperience of Kolb and Kafka.

first of all, if there was anything about this that the league felt like Vick could have avoided, this would have been it for him. Obviously, since no action is being taken, this is viewed as just some sort of freak accident that could have happened at a lot of players’ birthday parties. Vick apparently didn’t invite the people who started the problems and had nothing to do with the shooting.

Having said that, you can understand why Reid doesn’t want to hear any of that. In his mind, Vick probably shouldn’t even HAVE a birthday party.

But this is Goodell we’re talking about. The king of heavy-handedness in sports. If Vick were in any way culpable for putting himself in this situation to begin with, you can bet Goodell would be doing something in response.

I agree, I think

Jackma, I was a Vick supporter not an apologist and you know I’m not a Goodell fan either . I’m also not saying the Commissioner should have take action. However to call this a freak action is a little understateded——don’t you think? The public had the opportunity to come to this birthday party and come they did including known felons who Vick was asked to stay the hell away from.

Look, I’m not a social scientist (although I play one on football blogs) but he should have known or someone in his posse should have anticipated thugs showing up. It’s a poor decision by a guy who has made consistently poor decisions his entire career.

Really?

So he should have just magically known that out of no where someone from that incident was going to show up and get shot? Come on man. You don’t really believe that do you?

Steelers football is supposed to be 60 mins, recently it's been 45. The additional 15 are currently under construction.

His mistake

Was allowing a promoter to open the party to the public. When your Mike Vick, thats just asking for trouble.

this is where I agree. While there’s nothing explicitly wrong with having a public party, it would be better for a man in Vick’s situation to keep it strictly amongst known friends and not try to play Mr. Famous anymore.

I guess

But you have to also remember he could have been getting paid to do it there, I think he was. Which might cause you to roll the dice when you are millions of dollars in debt. But I understand what you are saying and I think Vick does now. He can’t live a normal life, he has to be a recluse.

it’s not fair for people to ask you to be a recluse…. unless you’re a convicted felon. Then things change.

Not a fan of Vick...

And don’t see the relevance in having this discussion in Baltimore Beat Down. He’s scum, who will always hang around scum.

We discuss not only the ravens but the nfl in general and I find this relevant. There are enough people here with opinions about vick, including our objector here, so it’s a fair post.

At the risk of sounding like I live under a rock…Does were there any other details about the shooting itself? Was anyone on the receiving end of that shot?

yes

his old ‘friend’ that was on trail with him in the dog fighting case got shot. So it all sounded suspect. There were also an altercation before the shooting with the person got shot and Mike Vick. Vick’s camp was saying that the guy approached Vick and tried to start something and then Vick left. 3 mins later the guy got shot but apparently Vick had nothing to do with it.

Could have been one of those situations where someone close to Vick took it upon himself to shoot the guy without being told to. Also the guy who got shot wouldn’t cooperate with the police so no one got arrested but Vick was never a person of interest/suspect.

sounds to me like Vick left because he smelled trouble (guys don’t just shoot someone… you could probably feel the tension during the altercation beforehand).
