Ravens @ Redskins: Preseason 'Open Thread'
Although I probably won't be able to make it tonighto nline to host and contribute to this 'Open Thread,' I urge everyone who can to log on and post your thoughts about the Baltimore Ravens exhibition game at the Washington Redskins. There is no love lost between the two city's fans, although I doubt the players could care less about the so-called regional rivalry. They just want to get their reps in and emerge healthy and more comfortable with the playbook, each other and impress the coaches.
So keep it here and have fun, and hopefully I'll get online later and join in the post-game commentary.

yeah im not diggin this right now...
bruce, looks like we’re using a lot of 43 cover 2. Has this been in heavy use in camp?

Still here
and it looks like the Ravens ass rush woes are continuing and therefore McNabb is picking them apart. He’s standing back there and waiting for a guy to open up and if he could throw the ball a bit further, it would have been a long TD pass.

So, will Reed be ready for the season? Whats the consensus here? I have heard mixed reports.

Nah, can't see that happening
but something tells me he won’t be on the PUP.

Nice catch Q
Buck Showalter clearly isn't interested in having Anthony Rendon as a member of the Orioles.

Cary Williams might be the starter
at some point this season, as he’s ooked good all camp but of course, is suspended the first two games.

With some difficulty, Cary Williams caught a poorly thrown ball by McNabb. He then got his stork legs gathered up and ran at less than blazing speed and promptly fumbled it after a feather fell from the sky and tipped is elbow. He’s not quick enough. He’ll get burnt in the NFL.
quickness isn't his problem
and i don’t agree with what you just said above. But there were definitely some coverage errors on his part last night and he remains a work in progress. But he is very athletic.

If it was a perfectly thrown ball he wouldnt have caught it, duh. Nearly every corner in the league take advantage of the QB’s mistakes.

It really seems like the first quarter of this game was just the Ravens shaking off the rust. If Stallworth hadn’t fumbled the ball they would have been on a roll.
Absolutely......
Flacco has been actually hitting the open man, but I’m still a bit dissapointed in the run game.

There's no doubt
Backup RB or not, McGahee has a nose for the endzone.

the ravens offense didnt look to special today it was as if it was like when they
played tbe colts but its just a preseason and the games not over yet. Cary Williams is really looking good out on the field and i can’t wait to see what prince miller does again with another punt return and what k.j gerald does on the field
Halftime just ended and the secnd half has begun
I’m still here but headed out shortly. The offense looked pretty average but our reserves are probably much better than the ‘skins. Parmele is a beast and our two TE’s will make a difference and I can’t see us dropping this one in the second half.
aka 'Rexx'
I’m still pulling for Steele but yea, I think we got this one in the bag.

Correct

That oening 2nd half drive was very solid
Bulger threw the ball well and he had a bunch of young targets (Dickson, Pitta, Reed) to throw to and Parmele is a load to bring down. Very efficient.
See I told you ll that we would win the 2nd half and it just started!

Oh wait, he’s supposed to be a… uhh, nevermind.

he start throwing more and he look good to me and it would had been a touchdown
on one his throws if david reed was able to hold on the ball
He still runs way too much.
He’s still like a rookie. Hasn’t learned to do it with his arm and not his feet.

is it just me
or did Bulger really outplay Flacco tonight. Flacco still has that deer-in-headlights look and can’t make snap decisions like Bulger can. Bulger also is able to work in receivers he hasn’t used before, whereas Flacco seems reluctant to trust Boldin or Stallworth yet. Any thoughts on that? Am I on target with that or not?
I don't think you're completely wrong.
But, I think two things come into play. Bulger’s had a LOT more experience doing this than Flacco and I’d chalk a lot of his “ease” in the pocket to that. And to the same end – he played most of his last seasons on his back, so he’s certain not have a deer in the headlights look because he’s been hit by the car so many times.
Flacco did look rushed, as did the whole offense in the beginning of the 1st quarter. Probably going to be sometime in the second regular season game when they all calm down noticeably.
by GrumpyOldBird on Aug 21, 2010 10:26 PM EDT up reply actions
Bulger had to develop a quick release in St. Louis, because, well let’s face it that offensive line couldn’t block to save their lives. I think that coupled with the fact that he’s got a few years under his belt, he looks like he has a better command of the offense.
(Not that I want this to happen, but we did win a superbowl when our back up QB came into the game)
you both are correct. bulger outplayed flacco. bulger has a sense of urgency and is quick to hit the open man and not necessarily the first man. he’s more of a tommy gun to flacco’s slow loading musket.
The most impressive thing about Bulger was how he completed multiple timing routs to rookies he really doesn’t know. He led a rag tag group 94 yards where the D clearly has a pre-season advantage. Flacco was still bouncing passes to Mason on curls and leaving his receivers hung out on the line. Come on Flacco get it together man.
It's not just you.
I thought the same exact thing. Flacco looked kind of lost tonight while Bulger was able to mesh well with just about all the receivers that he got to work with.
Huh? I can’t delete comments. I don’t have that power.

Am I reading this right?
Haruki Nakamura ran for a 54 yard TD?

yeah thats right they did a fake punt and he ran for 54 yards but Willis Mcgahee ran it in
for the touchdown afterwards
Oh thats right, I just saw the highlight. Pretty cool.

My thoughts-
Flacco still throwing off his back foot and (like I said before the game) he would throw high to Boldin. Which he did for Boldins only catch. Good old Theisman even said he can’t keep throwing off his back foot and be accurate. Flacco looked stiff, slow and deliberate. He made very quick reads to go short and really doesn’t allow for a secondary play to open it up. It’s the play called or nothing. That doesn’t win championships but it will beat team that your supposed to beat.
Landry continues to decline. He was bad last year and still is 5 yards from every play and only shows up to lay a hit on a completed ball. He was out of position a number of times and is slow to interupt the play. He had no idea where the ball was on the 45 yard pass. If he did he could have easily laid out and got a hand in. He is slow and not very good anymore. But, all we have. The rest are just as bad.
McNabb torched our DB’s and LB’s. The way to beat the Ravens is to throw over the middle at the LB’s. Don’t run just send out TE’s in the passing lanes.
Cut D-Will now and let Reed take his place. Reed showed more spunk and fight than D-Will has his time here. Reed grabs the ball. I’d move him past Clayton to at least #4.
Harbaugh missed another easy challenge. This just keeps happening and is unacceptable. It gave the Skins a 1st. The RB fell on his own and fumbled. We have the worst eyes in the booth I guess.
McLellan got his bell knocked out of the tower. Nice vision ear hole.
Burgess is our best LB next to Ray. He had the 2 hardest hits and I think his confidence actually climbed with his time with NE. He’s a better player.
Rice looked, the D line looked good, Suggs got lucky taking the beltway around to sack a seriously deep dropped McNabb. Ray Lewis was there I guess. But, we are sooooo vulnerable to the pass. We are seriously in big trouble. I hope we keep Dickson and Pitta and trade Heap. I’d hate to lose either of them. I’d rather have those 2 on the field and bench our 3rd WR.
Bulger sets a better tempo and has more flow with the game than Flacco. Bulger is a better QB than Flacco. Flacco will start every game. Bulger throws off his front foot and is more accurate with the short ball and has better vision. He looked great tonight and had the commentators really yucking praises. Like I said, Flacco has time for 1 play in his head and it better be there. He also missed a few open passes and bought 0 time on the 3rd down end zone pass attempt.
He threw short and let nothing develop. I hope he improves and doesn’t add Rice’s catches and YAC yards to his numbers again. they really don’t tell the stroy.
I
agree. While Flacco will have a few really impressive drives, i’m still not impressed. He’s got the talent and the potential, but he lacks confidence and timing.
Bulger on the other hand, has looked great. I’ve always thought he was a great passer, but unfortunately he never got much time to pass in the latter years of St Louis.
And how well he threw today, and considering he’s played under who knows how many different o-line lineups in practice.
Needless to say, i wont be terribly bummed if Flacco gets banged up this year.
Another note, David Reed is a stud.
Shoulda muscled away that possible TD grab.
Also had a great special teams play.

I gotta admit I agree, as far as tonight goes. Bulger looks natural in the pocket and progresses through his reads very quickly. I am still waiting for Flacco to take that next step. I hope this regular season he can make that move.

Really liked Reeds hands and agressiveness (yeah I know, thats what she said)…I also like Parmele as kick returner. He was our only offense against the Colts last year. He did himself well as RB too. Leron better watch out and start practicing his blocking. I think Harper finally played himself off the team. The kid looked terrible. The futures in Pitta, Dickson, Cody and Reed. It will be a smooth transition from Heap, Clayton and Gregg. Now we just need a DB and a safety. We may have to trade a big name soon.
what you wrote is full of you dont know what you talking about and little bit of you know
what you talking about but thats just you
jazzhands20-
my statements are laser point dead on. if teams played the better player at a specific time instead of worrying about feelings, tenure, controversy etc., teams would be much better at that moment. there were moments in time that randall Cunningham would have been better for us, rice should have played his first year more-especially against pitt in the playoffs..you go with the hot hand.
if flacco struggles bulger should strep right in. but, that won’t happen because of feelings and explanations and all the annoyances change brings. for once, id like to see a T E A M. all parts interchangable. a place where another TE can play while heap sits. a place where troy smith or bulger takes the red zone snaps. best player for best moment.
I understand what you are saying but at the sametime you are not a coach
I dont think that The Ravens go on feelings when it comes to players becoming starters.Joe Flacco became the starter not base on feelings but by his performance this is only preseason and Marc Bulger did well but in preseason there have been many of times where the backup shine more then the starter. Preseason games are meant to help teams see where they need work on and what players they are going to keep to place on the 53 man roster
true but coaches will take the road less likely to bring attention to them. billick wouldn’t bench boller or banks because he felt (a feeling) thet he was right even though he really knew he was wrong. He just didn’t want to admit defeat. There is guilt in admitting defeat and that is a feeling too.
…and it was a feeling to not resign Dilfer. The fact was, he was a team leader and SB winner. Outside of that, it was a feeling that cost him his job. Sharp went the same way. Both of these guys had feelings the team should be run a certain way and both were shown the door. If Sharp only didn’t call out Grbacs tears….the result of feelings.
you are right but we will see what will happen this year. Joe Flacco only in
his third year I’m sure Bulger and the Quarterback coach will help Joe Flacco become a better player and If not I’m sure Marc Bulger maybe even Troy Smith will step up and be the better player
definately agree, i want Cody to be the starter but like u said they care too much about feelings. I thought it was just a business.

theres a reason for the Preseason...
In the beginning the ravens weren’t matching the skins intensity,it was a home game for them, then after a few adjustments, and we amped it up,the skins never scored again…It was a vanilla game period, neither team showed much, however, the skins realized, they could not run the ball. The skins had 4 turnovers as well.Flacco looked stiff at times, but its not a problem,he’s going to be fine.Bulger looked great, but I don’t put much creedance in a 2 minute drill,I am certain it was scripted prior to the game and Bulger did what he was brought here to do,back-up and he’s an awesome insurance policy. The db;s we all knew were going to be alittle shaky, but the skins still only scored 3 points, remember McNabb and Grossman have been around for a while,so its no big deal. The fact that we did not have any injuries, the 2nd teams go much needed work in and we got to see players like,David Reed,Dickson & Pitta who will make the team,Williams sprained an ankle, another injury,so he might well be on his way out.So in further review,we got out with a win, uninjuried, saw some up and coming talent,I think the coaches were pleased overall,I was ,now the skins fans around here are shut up for awhile….when the time comnes,we are going to run and often,be patient, its pre-season!
