Ravens Training Camp: Sunday AM Edition
In past years the Baltimore Ravens vaunted defense usually had its way with the team's offense in Training Camp. Now the offense holds its own, even sometimes moving the ball seemingly almost at will, with a bit of a swagger.
QB Joe Flacco truly has total control of this offense, pointing players into their proper formations, with everyone following his directions. Then, even with a rocket for an arm, he proves he can still throw the soft pass with a nice touch when required. Even against the first team defense, the starting offensive line (minus Matt Birk and Jared Gaither) still protects Joe for as long as it takes for him to get the pass off. Afterwards, in front of me along the back line of the end zone, Head Coach John Harbaugh and Flacco are talking technical gibberish while Marc Bulger runs the offense.
In 11-on-11 full contact drills, the echo of pads hitting pads is heard across the field. Fabian Washington is in his jersey and shorts, but not practicing this morning. On the other hand, Todd Heap is dressed and playing, as evidenced by cutting across the middle for a Flacco pass in non-contact offense vs. defense drills.
Prescott Burgess picks off Flacco near the goal line but then Troy Smith hits rookie TE Ed Dickson in the back of the end zone through a maze of defensive plays for a score. Wow, that was an amazing play and shows what great hands Dickson has, prompting Senior Offensive Assistant Al Saunders to cheer for the kid.
Placekicker Billy Cundiff appears to be taking all of the kicker opportunities today as he hits consecutively from 32 and 42 yards, misses from 45 but nails one from 52. Later he hits a couple of shorter ones from 30 and 33 yards.
On the goal line, Heap is tackled after receiving a pass and getting gang tackled. He rises looking for the refs to signal the TD, but the defense rushes in to object. The refs confer and give Heap the TD signal he was hoping for, to the chagrin of the defense. My though of that familiar play was that if it was called a TD for the Pittsburgh Steelers' Santonio Holmes, then it should be called the same for Heap!
At the podium after practice ends, Harbaugh does not rule out the possibility of adding additional secondary help and acknowledges that could include Frank Walker and Shawn SPrings, but no one dared to askabout the whereabouts of one Chris McAlister! He also related that the team is unsure about the health of tackle Jared Gaither, who supposedly has a muscle cramp and lost 20 pounds on his own in the off season. The team is concerned enough to hold hi out of further practice and consider additional medical testing. The team is working out three unnamed offensive linemen as the players clear the field after the morning session.
I didn't stay for the afternoon session, so there will be no PM Edition, although you can go to the team's official site for further news and notes on Training Camp.

Its good to have a good offense and defense. Flacco shouldnt feel any pressure against any defense because in pracice he goes against the best in the business.

what is up with Gaither
i figured he’d play regardless of his feeling towards us because somebody is gonna pay him next year. instead its a lot of pouting.
He has unexplained weight loss, and they’re sending him for blood work. I’m reserving judgement until his lab results come back. It could be nothing, or it could be a symptom of something serious.
Water covers 2/3 of the Earth's surface. Ed Reed covers the rest.
I’m worried that he’s been doing drugs. That would explain the weight loss but also mean a suspension.
Pretty astute, Hawk
Hate to jump to conclusions but when a young guy in his early 20’s with lots of money mysteriously loses a bunch of weight, has vaguely defined injuries and acts a bit flaky . . . that question is going to pop up at some point. I don’t know about blood work but the drug in question doesn’t really show up in drug tests for very long after the person has used it. Hopefully we’re wrong and he gets back on track from whatever he is ailing him and in football shape soon. This prospects for season seems more precarious than ever.
lot of drugs can cause weight loss
but if he hasn’t used in 4 or 5 days, it will be hard to detect.

Oh Ravens. Won’t they ever listen to me. Our pants are down on D because we never got a solid 2nd LB and didn’t beef up the DB situation. This might be the worst D backfield ever. We are small, slow and immature. Foxy is no great loss but even his mediocrity had its moments.
Wow, did we ever put so much stock in Ray Rice. Not only did Rays performance provide a false sense of security on offense, it even blinded the coaches to the weekest D in the AFC North. Yes, worse than Clevelands. Come on now, Ngata 1 sack, Suggs no show, Gregg hurt, JJ overachieving, Ray run over by Cincy twice, needing magic to beat the Steelers 3rd stringer…..
Okay Boldin is a nice pick up. Big props there especially with the pay he accepted. Hmmmm, thats about it. Cody may be a jelly roll. Kindle was a gamble. That leaves Boldin as our only imporvement. 1 piece.
Can Flacco win shoot outs. No. I don’t think he can.
Just like the goal line INT that Flacco threw in practice, he has no pressure game in him. The shorter the field the worst he gets. We are back to Memorial Stadium days with this bunch.
How
Has ESPN not signed you yet, raven?
Ngata only had one sack? Thats terrible! Lets cut him for a DT who gets to the QB!
that's
cory redding right? should he take Ngata’s starting spot?

okay the ngata sack thing isn’t important but let’s go ngata pressure in general. i didn’t see him opening anything up for the ends. maybe sluggs is totally over rated. friggin cincy steam rolled our line. also ngata got a few 15 yard flags that hurt. to me, he declined last year.
when that knuckle head who’s on with sap on espn called ngata one of the top 5 players in the league i just about fell over. maybe your right, i should work for espn.
ask Jeff Saturday about Ngata
he says he’s the best DLineman in the league.
The guy is about 4-feet wide, so even if he pushes his double-team back 5 yards (he often does), it’s hard for him to split that. There aren’t ANY 345-lb penetration specialists in the NFL.
