Ed Reed Looking For New Contract?

Not only is Baltimore Ravens safety Ed Reed's surgically-repaired hip hurting, it appears his wallet is feeling the pain as well. Reportedly, Reed told a local radio station that he would like a new deal in place before returning to the field. However, he is being reasonable in that if he thinks he won't be coming back to play anytime soon, he wouldn't push the issue.

Reed still has three years, including the 2010 season on his six-year deal that also paid him a $15 million signing bonus.

Aaron Wilson of the National Football Post, did a short write-up in his "Wilson Wire" section, so click on the link to see the story,...and cross your fingers that Reed is well enough to step out on the field and continue his Hall of Fame career enough to be worthy of a new contract.

I don’t know if this is the best time for Ed to be bringing up a new contract. He was 50/50 on retiring and is coming off a major surgery. I am a huge Ed Reed fan but this wouldn’t be a great decision for the organization. Maybe restructure his contract with some extra incentives based on playing time, or pro bowl, or whatever, but I don’t know about a new deal.

Ed had a torn muscle in his hip at the time he said he was 50-50. Guys have a different perspective after a few months off.

Make it incentive based on playing time and I'm all for it, but...

….you know he wants the cash signing bonus more than anything else. After all, the last one was three long years ago and only $15 million!

Could be a good thing, signifying how long the ravens can expect for him to play

by Raven_all_day on Jul 7, 2010 8:39 PM EDT reply actions

Yea, I like that because if he is telling the front office that he wants a new contract, it might indicate that he has more than a year left in him and thinks he will be in real good shape once he comes back 100% from this hip surgery. This is actually a good thing.

Throw in Kelly Gregg at nose tackle and behemoth rookie Terrence Cody and you have something truly frightening."

Not our boy Reed. He is not that type of person that would screw us over and trust me that Ozzie is not the GM who will fall for that type of crap.

I really do think this is a good thing
"I’m not making it a big deal," Reed said Tuesday on the "Norris and Davis Show" on 105.7 The Fan.

"I think it needs to be taken care of, but it also goes back to how I feel. I’m not going to ask the Ravens for anything if I’m not even going to play any much longer."

Reed said he has called Ravens Head Coach John Harbaugh and told him that he is "shooting to come back this year." He announced the same to fans on the radio Tuesday.

"I’m coming back for at least one more year," Reed said. "This year here is for the fans. This is not about me, not about the Baltimore Ravens. It’s about the fans, the fans in Baltimore and across the league who like to see us perform on the football field come Sunday and really appreciate the work we put in."

We all know Reed was going to come back for this year, and love his attitude he is bringing. He is doing this for us. So if we give him a new contract, it will be because he thinks he still has a good bit of football left in him.

Take your time Ed, your spot will be waiting for you.

I personally love this news, Ive read so many “Ed Reed” bashing comments on ESPN, BR.com and NFL.com (while on the clock by the way, I love getting paid while reading about the Ravens) and while the comments have irritated me, I realize its just people finding any reason they can to say something bad about a truly great player and leader. But anyway, I love this news for many reasons: 1) Because any news concerning Ed Reed returning to the field is good news. 2) I really love this guy. 3) Ed feels like he still has a lot more than we had expected. and 4) He wants to be a Raven for the rest of his career, while I never doubted his dedication to the team, we cant ignore history, most the greatest safeties to ever step on the field couldnt finish their careers where they began; Ronnie Lott, Rod Woodson, Steve Atwater, Jack Tatum, John Lynch, Brian Dawkins, we can keep going. While Ed is already mentioned with these greats, its safe to say that when he retires he will always be mentioned toward the top and the difference between him and the others would come down to his organization and fans loving him enough to let him spend every day of his career with the team that stole him from the draft. While Ive always expected Ed to retire a Raven, it seemed recently that his retirement wouldnt be under the circumstances I had envisioned, I was thinking more like a Jerome Bettis type of departure, you know.

While I don’t think Ed Reed is a Diva, he still live loves all the praise he gets and he wants his respect. To any NFL player, the highest respect is being the guy with the largest paycheck for their position. Ed Reed keeps getting told by the fans and media he should be that guy. So he’s gonna ask for the money regardless of his health. He probably views he got this injured by putting his body on the line for this team, and they should pay him accordingly regardless of his future health. If I was Reed, I would think the same way. Ozzie, on the other hand, has got to wait and see if Ed gets his health in check, and what the future collective bargaining agreement looks like before a new deal is made.

Something tells me

the team and Ed will work something out to make both happy and keep Ed as a Raven for the rest of his career, however long, or short it may end up.

Definitely. The thing I love about Ozzie is that he does not let our great players walk. He knows how much it means to us to see these guys stay in purple their entire careers.

hmmmm

I think Ed Reed is a tremendous talent and one of the best players I’ve ever seen. The question is, will he be able to play this season at all? How many years do we think Ed will last? Every year he ponders retirement from an ongoing neck problem. He is halfway through a 6 year multi-million dollar contract and may play half a season if we are lucky and he wants more money??? No question a healthy Ed Reed always deserves more money and if he were in perfect health I would definitely throw several million more dollars his way to keep him happy.

The point is he is NOT healthy and will always be an injury risk. Is it disloyalty to not pay him more? Do we give him $10 million more to play maybe 10 games and retire at the end of the season? We will hear this retirement talk every year from now on. Don’t get me wrong – Ed is like Ray to me and I would happily keep him with us the next 7 years or so, but is this likely to happen? We must trust in Ossie to do the right thing. A healthy Ed Reed is worth every penny you pay him. If he were healthy I’d say “Pay him whatever he wants”. He is not healthy and may never be again. So what is the right move?

Do we give him $10 million more to play maybe 10 games and retire at the end of the season?

This won’t happen. Ozzie won’t let it happen, the doctors won’t let it happen and Reed won’t let it happen. We really shouldn’t even look into this situation too much right now because it is too early to tell what we are going to get from Reed, but things are looking alot better now.

Is it disloyalty to not pay him more?

Is it disloyalty to say the back half of the largest-ever safety contract at the time of the signing isn’t enough now that he’s injured and pondering retirement on a year-to-year basis?

Water covers 2/3 of the Earth's surface. Ed Reed covers the rest.

As Someone Mentioned

Above, I am also curious about the timing. I wonder if it stems from slight overpayment for recent FA’s, in Reed’s mind?

Having said that, this year is an uncapped year, so in theory, couldn’t the Ravens pay him anything, in theory? Maybe he wants his current contract torn up, sign a one-year deal, and then take his chances, post CBA… Not sure of the rules for anything i have said…

by vlad755 on Jul 8, 2010 3:50 PM EDT reply actions

I wonder....

I have posed this question before, why didn’t he have have surgery at the end of the season,so he would be ready for the season, instead of putting it off…He is one of the greatest of all time, now he sends mixed signals, more money,35% healed, delayed surgery.I wish he would make a decision and stand by it,including the fact that he agreed to a contact that is now not good enough, suppose he sucked after he signed his last contract, would the front office demand money back via pay cut or contiuing to pay when you don’t play?If he wants to be a raven, its time to step up,we have a great shot of achieveing out goals this year, whats that worth?

by thomlord on Jul 8, 2010 4:44 PM EDT reply actions

I asked Dan Kolko(masn reporter) the same questions. He says Reed just does things his way and the Ravens have learned to deal with it.

I agree with you, he should have had the hip surgery a day or two after the end of the season.

That makes Reed sound like a jerk, which I do not think he is at all.

I don’t think he’s a jerk either, he’s just a little selfish t times. It’s easiar to put up with a few of his oddities since he’s a superstar though.

Something tells me

Reed will be there at some point and be great the moment he steps out onto the field, regardless of what game he comes back at.

I’ve got that same feeling. Hopefully sooner than later though.

Not trying to start anything...

But would he be seeking a contract that pays him per play?
If I were the Ravens front office, I’d jump at that.
He’s beautiful to watch play, but he’s just hurt so damn much.
