Training Camp 7/30. Full Squad: Notes, Pictures and Videos.

100_0026_medium

Today was the start of full squad practices for the Baltimore Ravens. On a glorious day in Westminster, Maryland, fans flocked into McDaniel College by the thousands to see a Ravens team that could make a serious run at a Superbowl in the 2010-2011 season. The energy was high and the fans were enjoying the sunny 80 degree weather while watching all the aspects of our team come together. Here are a few notes from the morning practice.

  • Matt Birk did not practice today and Chris Chester took his spot at Center on the first team. Chester was solid, but did struggle when Terrence Cody came in there.
  • Ed Reed was seen on the opposite practice field doing conditioning drills for nearly the entire practice. It was really encouraging to see Reed out there trying to do whatever he can to get back in the lineup.
  • The WR are looking very good at this point. During drills, there were very few drops from the guys and they all looked to be running crisp routes. There really is not one guy who I see as an automatic cut.
  • WR Donte Stallworth looks better than ever. This guy is built for speed. He is much bigger than I imagined him being in person. Huge arms, huge upper body, strong legs and was a catching machine today. The dreads have never looked so good.
  • Anquan Boldin cannot be covered. This guy made every single route and catch look effortless. Granted it was against some of our backup CB, he still made everything look easy. Boldin does not have a neck, it is just a muscle that connects his head to his enormous upper body. Baltimore fans should be extremely excited about what this guy is going to bring to our offense.
  • One guy I was very impressed with today was rookie WR David Reed. During the drills and 11 on 11, Reed was laying his body out all over the place, even if the ball was thrown where he could not get it. On one play, Troy Smtih threw a high pass that was sailing towards going out of bounds. Even though the catch did not count, Reed made a great attempt at getting both feet down when he dove for the ball. Strong route runner.
  • Joe Flacco is beyond what any of the other QB's bring to this offense. When he is in there, you just get the feeling that everything will be alright. His throwing motion, awareness, poise and sheer size just stands out so much more than Bulger, Smith and Beck. The guy looks great
  • Before the practice started, coach Jim Zorn was running the QB's through a very interesting drill. Using huge green bouncing balls, Zorn and the other QB's would throw these balls as hard as possible at one QB standing in the middle. What this did was simulate a pass rusher coming in very fast and forced the QB to react quickly, avoiding the sack. On one throw, Troy Smith nailed John Beck in the back, nearly knocking him over.
  • RB Willis McGahee takes a hand off up the middle where he is met by SS Dawan Landry. A collision ensues and McGahee is launched off his feet. This was by far the hit of the morning and what we learned from it is that Willis had lost a tooth.
  • During special teams drills this morning, there were some players running drills that we are not used to seeing. WR Mark Clayton was blocking on return drills with none other than Donte Stallworth carrying the ball in his hands. This could be a sign of things to come and I like the mentality that Clayton has now of doing anything he can to help this team win, even if that involves playing special teams this late in his career.
  • WR Eron Riley and Justin Harper looked sharp. Both made some very nice leaping catches multiple times and showed off some great speed.
  • There were many different defensive schemes run throughout practice today. One thing I noticed was alot of 4-3 formations that had Jarrett Johnson lining up at DE with Ray, Ellerbe and Suggs at LB. It was switched up many times and was causing alot of problems for the QB's.
  • With the 2nd string offense in there, Marc Bulger throws an interception to CB Chris Carr which was taken to the house about 50 yards for a TD. The entire place erupted, including the defensive members. After the celebrations, Carr decided to punt the ball in the air causing laughter throughout.
  • Terrence Cody could potentially be the biggest man in the NFL. When you see him on the field, you cannot even tell he is wearing pads because of his size. The O-Lineman were having a rough time on a few plays today with Cody. On one running play, McGahee cut up the middle and all of a sudden you see Cody sprinting as fast as possible to get to McGahee........he did not catch him.
  • Kickers looked strong today, with Graham coming out on top for the practice it seemed. Cundiff missed a field goal that Graham had previously made. Talks are looming between fans that Graham is going to win this job, but it is way too early to tell.

Here are a couple videos I was able to record from the practice today. HERE

On one throw, Troy Smith nailed John Beck in the back, nearly knocking him over.

In other news, John Beck had to be rescued by firefighters after being hung on the uprights by his jockstrap. John Beck insisted that it was Joe Flacco that did it, and that he also threatened to shove him in a locker. John Beck told on Flacco to John Harbaugh and Flacco was promptly placed in a 5 minute time-out.

Nice work Malor. This is the kind of info I love to hear since I can’t be there.

Thanks, I will try to get as much fan coverage as possible during these practices throughout training camp. Bruce can do the brown nosing inside coverage while I report from the Baltimoran area.

I will tell you this much, the Baltimore accents were on full force today in the bleachers I was sitting. You have no idea how many times I heard “I’ll tell you what!”

Now when you say Boldin can’t be covered do you mean by your DB’s or by a real set of DB’s?

He can’t even be covered by a bed sheet.

Was it hyperbole or were there really more people there than at any orioles game?

I have been to 6 Orioles games this year and I would say there were more people here today than there have been at about 4 of the 6 games ive been to. They said there were around 8,000 people there and I know for a fact that Orioles have had games this year where they did not even get 3,000 to come.

by Mr MaLoR on Jul 30, 2010 7:19 PM EDT up reply actions

now we need to settle down, trust Showalter and MacPhail, and hope to God we can get a little budget upgrade on the scouting department.

The coaches aren’t the ones hitting and pitching, both of which we suck at. The best we can hope for is to somehow lure a big time free agent in here and then try to get more. We have obviously shown we do not know how to build a team with youth.

by Mr MaLoR on Jul 30, 2010 7:30 PM EDT up reply actions

this was a team that, going into this year, could hit (supposedly). so much of these problems are mental, which coaching can fix. obviously we need a talent upgrade, but the main reason we cant build with youth is that we dont spend nearly the amt of $ needed in spanish-speaking countries for scouting

Right

The O’d do have solid prospects, even if they haven’t played that way this year. Adam Jones has not been good, but anyone who knows baseball, knows his troubles are mostly mental (poor outfield positioning, awful plate discipline), as he has all the talent in the world. Same with Weiters and Matusz. Sometimes in a losing enviorment things just snowball and everyone looks bad. These things can be corrected.

That said, we do need to add an All Star caliber bat to the middle of our lineup.

I’m liking the signing of Buck and judging from his track record in similar situations, he is the right man for the job.

It absolutely blows my mind that anybody can bear to watch baseball at all.

"Offical count"

was 11,600, beating last year’s high of 11,078. Most ever at Camp for a non-scrimmage game, according to the team. Funny how they figure it out. They send someone to count the cars in the area, multiply it by three and add any groups to that total. So scientific, eh?

So to answer the Orioles comment,

yes, more than many an O’s game! But then again, more action, offense and scoring!

What does it say about baseball when football practice (the first of the season, no less!) is more exciting than baseball games?

jackmca, if you want a sense of how many people were there today, just look at that one picture of the crowd and imagine that stretched around 2 football fields. Thats what it looked like.

Hey bruce

Is Webb still rocking the dreads? If he cut’s them he automatically sucks. So be sure to warn him about that.

Is there a possibility that Stallworth could become the #2. My honest opinion is tha Mason should be in the slot. He no longer has the speed to beat corners but can still produce in the middle. If Stallworth became the starter next to Boldin safeties would have to respect him and not cheat into the box. I think our offense would be more effective this way.

by Raven_all_day on Jul 31, 2010 3:03 PM EDT reply actions

I could see that happening.

Mason in the slot just makes a lot more sense. Either way I think all three of the WR’s will have great years.

by mlb32001 on Jul 31, 2010 5:46 PM EDT up reply actions

I don’t think so, Because Mason Is not fast enough to play slot. Stallworth is built for the slot. It would make more sense to keep them where they are because Mason has the hands for #2, hell he has hands good enough for #1 WR. Stallworth on the other hand is more of a deep threat guy, that will burn up secondaries when he is single covered.

Boldin is great over the middle, isnt that where the slot guy goes? stallworth deep, mason on a curl, and boldin over the middle. SICK!

by Rayisyourdaddy on Aug 3, 2010 11:00 PM EDT reply actions

you can send anyone over the middle, not just the slot. I’m sure you’ll see Boldin in the slot from time to time, but just because a guy is in the slot doesn’t mean he’s only a #3.
