Foxworth Out for the Season

http://twitter.com/RavensInsider/status/19913203843

Foxworth hurt his knee thursday if out for an extended period major blow to ravens defense

http://twitter.com/RavensInsider/status/19914225932

Foxworth will need surgery to repair the damage out for the season

Foxworth tore his ACL and is out for the season.  Queue the hysteria.

Washington is practicing now after passing his physical Thursday, but this -- combined with Reed and Webb -- is a major concern for our secondary.

The opinions posted here are those of the administrator of this blog and his loyal readers. They are in no way official comments from the team, and should not be misconstued as such, even though he thinks he could do just as well or even a better job!

Wow

Three starting quality CB’s who tore ACL’s in past year. Sucks.

Any solid FA CB’s out there? At this point I don’t think money would be an issue after this blow.

Frank Walker is going to be able to make it rain. That’s a really depressing thought.

dont get too excited here this is probably just a rumor i saw on baltimoreravens.com that

he limp of the field i don’t think if he tore his acl he wouldn’t be limping of the filed somebody would be carrying him off the field

Aaron Wilson is the most reliable Ravens reporter out there. If he says it’s true, I believe him.

by Ampallang on Jul 30, 2010 11:00 AM EDT up reply actions

No true at all

First off, this is legit, he did tear his ACL. Secondly, it is very common for people to walk with a limp after tearing their ACL. Sometimes you can tear the ACL and not even know for some time. Many ACL tears are not even that painful, but obviously healthy ligaments are integral to being a high level athlete.

by DT711 on Jul 30, 2010 11:01 AM EDT up reply actions

Yeah, it’s legit.

It will be interesting to see what they do now. Trading for a corner may be the only option, but that will cost a fortune at this point.

by BAL_Hawk on Jul 30, 2010 11:03 AM EDT up reply actions

sometimes after ACL tears,

you can still walk WITHOUT a limp. so him limping doesn’t mean anyhting.

in some cases, yes

but in others, no. it’s a strange injury and not one fully understood yet. For instance, we can’t explain why female athletes are five times as likely to tear their ACLs as men are.

I walked off the field after two minutes of yelling “FUUUUUUUUUUCKK.” Then I walked without much pain for a month until surgery… knee just felt really loose and unstable.

WHAT?!?!?

This is horrible. I mean obviously there is no reason to doubt Ozzie on his choice of Kindle here but I’m wishing we had chose Kyle Wilson now and not traded down. Obviously couldn’t have foreseen this happening tho

Exactly. At this point, our draft is what it is. A more interesting topic is going to be what Ozzie does to rectify this situation now.

This is about the worst injury that the Ravens could have suffered right now. Even if Ray or Joe were injured, the Ravens would have good backups in Ellerbe and Bulger. At corner, they literally have no one. Even Cary Williams is suspended.

I’m not one to panic, but this is about the worst news we could have had.

by BAL_Hawk on Jul 30, 2010 11:01 AM EDT up reply actions   1 recs

Right

Oz might really have to get creative and explore swinging a trade. I know he hates to give up picks, but if we are really going for a SB run, it might have to be done. Ray is not getting any younger.

by DT711 on Jul 30, 2010 11:03 AM EDT up reply actions

I dont think so but it could happen but i dont think we should worry about it too much

we still have ladarius webb that I think will recover pretty soon and the other verteran corners such as Walt Harris and Travis Fisher

by jazz20 on Jul 30, 2010 11:08 AM EDT up reply actions

So your fine with starting possibly the first half of the year

With a healing Fabian, Carr, Fisher and Harris. Really?

I’m as much of a homer as the next guy, but that will not get it done.

Very doubtful Webb can go before week 6 IMO.

by DT711 on Jul 30, 2010 11:10 AM EDT up reply actions

Yeah… The Ravens are in trouble. I believe that they’ll adjust, but there’s only so much you can do.

by BAL_Hawk on Jul 30, 2010 11:13 AM EDT up reply actions

Ok we got Travis Fisher,K.J Gerald,Walt Harris,Ladarius Webb(still healing)

Fabian Washington( who off of Pup list) Cary Williams and Prince Miller; What other cornerback can we get its not going to be a big time cornerback that we can trade for.

by jazz20 on Jul 30, 2010 11:14 AM EDT up reply actions

That is one borderline starter who will be ready to go week 1

Fabian. He was supposed to be our #3 this year.

Like I said above, Webb will not be able to start the season.

We do have a lot of guys, but we’re light on top end talent.

I agree, it will be hard to trade for any big time guy, but hopefully Oz can pick up a solid vet, somehow someway, without getting totally ripped off.

by DT711 on Jul 30, 2010 11:19 AM EDT up reply actions

Maybe they can get the Jets to trade Dwight Lowery for Trevor Pryce (a Ryan favorite) and some picks.

They don’t need Lowery with all the depth that they have. Ryan would want Harbaugh’s first-born, though.

They were talking about it. Nothing is set.

by BAL_Hawk on Jul 30, 2010 12:47 PM EDT up reply actions

I don’t know any team that has a decent corner that they’re willing to trade. Ozzie would need to ‘wow’ them with an offer to make it happen, but we all know how he hates to do that. Usually, I would agree, but the Ravens have too much invested in this season to allow such a huge achilles heel.

The only trade that I could think of would be trading Gaither for a corner like Leodis McKelvin and some extra picks, but at this point, there’s no way that the Ravens are going to be on the winning side of any deals that they make.

by BAL_Hawk on Jul 30, 2010 11:08 AM EDT up reply actions

Its time for Oz

To pull a rabbit out of his hat.

This can not become a situation like the RB position in 2001 after Jamal tore his ACL. We saw how much the Brookins/Allen combo did for us that year.

by DT711 on Jul 30, 2010 11:14 AM EDT up reply actions

I’m thinking a trade will be going down.

The Ravens have depth at many positions. Maybe Ozzie can find a CB deep team that needs a RB, LB or T.

by BAL_Hawk on Jul 30, 2010 11:20 AM EDT up reply actions

The Jets, the Chiefs and the Bills have good depth.

by BAL_Hawk on Jul 30, 2010 11:30 AM EDT up reply actions

we have major depth...

at LB and DL…

We will probably use a few players from this group of players who will be in demand if we cut them (Barnes, McClain, Phillips, McKinney, Talavou and Divens) to get more CB depth. We cannot replace him without picks included, but maybe we can get someone who can be a #2 or #3 cb. Or maybe we take the plunge with Asamougha.

When we traded for him, we expected him to be our starter. And Madden had him listed at like a 5 year 40 mil deal, and I wanted to see if there was any truth to that. If we can renegotiate with him, we could clear up a lot of cap space.

He's really irrelevant when talking about cap space

The Ravens will most likely cut McGahee next off season anyway. The issue with signing someone like Nmadi (not that we could even get him) is having the funds available to extend Ngata, Flacco, Rice, Oher, Grubbs… down the line.

by DT711 on Jul 30, 2010 12:04 PM EDT up reply actions

The issue with Asomugha is his contract.

It’s been rumored that the Raiders have shopped him around before, so I think that we could get him. The problem is that no one wants to pay a corner as much as Peyton Manning.

by BAL_Hawk on Jul 30, 2010 12:07 PM EDT up reply actions

Except that

At worse, we would only have Asomugha for only a year. If it wins us a shiny new Lombardi, who cares if he is gone next Spring?

For 2010, money is not an issue as 2010 is an uncapped year. Stevie B has intimated that he is willing to spend whatever it takes -my words and my interpretation.

If the deal with Oakland is a Heap, Gaither, Troy (sorry MaLoR), an LB and second rounder, I say do it and laugh all the way to Dallas.

Three starting corners all had ACL tears… That’s just unfair.

by BAL_Hawk on Jul 30, 2010 12:58 PM EDT up reply actions

Okay so now since Dominque Foxworth is gone everything is gone down hill?

I dont think we should worry the season isnt over and there still talent out there for us to sign or talent that we already have that just need more time to improve. I believe that this is a bad for us to lose Dominque Foxworth but you still have to move forward

by jazz20 on Jul 30, 2010 12:58 PM EDT up reply actions

Yes, with Foxworth gone everything is going downhill in the secondary. I know we all LOVE our team and think they are all pro bowl players, but when you lose your TOP 3 corners in a pass happy league, bad things tend to happen. What if GB lost Harris and Woodson, NYJ lost Revis, Cromartie, Wilson, CINCI lost Hall, Joesph, Jones, and all those other teams.

Even our backups (Cary Williams) cant play. We are relying on Chris Carr, two castoffs and an undrafted rookie at the moment.

by Mr MaLoR on Jul 30, 2010 1:02 PM EDT up reply actions

Dude… You just don’t understand.

Corner is the a position where depth is extremely important. In order to match up with other teams receivers, you need to have at least 3-4 good corners. The Ravens have 2 corners coming off injury, and one of them will likely start on the PUP. Now, their most reliable corner tears his ACL. Unbelievable!

Carr is not a starter. I’ve never seen a corner thrown at more than Carr was when he was forced to start last season. Everyone else would be a camp body on most teams. This is a very bad situation. Something needs to be done about it, or the Ravens are going to lose many more games than they should next season.

I don’t want it to seem like I am angry about this whole situation and have lost hope, but as of right now we have the worst CB group in the league going into week 1. Undrafted guys and guys who are near retirement are not the answer. Getting any combination of Lucas, Springs, Harper, Smoot would make me feel better, but the guys we have now do not.

by Mr MaLoR on Jul 30, 2010 1:28 PM EDT up reply actions

True bit they guy was a good punt returner, if he can make movers running the ball y cant he shadow someone doing the same. He has the speed too (4.44 40 time)

by Raven_all_day on Jul 30, 2010 1:50 PM EDT up reply actions

doesn't work like that man

the 40 measures you running in a straight line. It doesn’t measure how you defend a double-move, because I’m guessing Zbi would get juked out of his shoes.

And he can follow guys running with the ball. It’s guys running without the ball that is much harder. Guys running with the ball have to progress downfield, so you take angles to intercept their progress. When covering a guy, you’re not taking an angle on him. You’re trying to change direction as he does, sometimes stopping and starting and making 90 degree turns without losing stride. A safety just isn’t trained for that. We’d be better served by Frank Walker.

obviously Josh McDaniels can see the future, why can’t OZZIE???

corner was our biggest weekness going into the draft

and now we have the wost CBs in the league. Ozzie added no one in the draft to help our secondary. Yeah I know BPA, but when our CB have trouble covering antwaan randle el you’ll wish we had drafted someone better.

A-Rod uses steroids, but steroids use Matt Wieters.

by Mr MaLoR on Jul 30, 2010 5:39 PM EDT up reply actions

he's predicting this season

the BPA philosophy is prevalent around the league for a reason. There might be a CB, who compared to other CBs is the 5th or 6th best guy and could go in the 3rd round. But that doesn’t mean he won’t be a scrub in the NFL.
Likewise, you may be set at Outside Linebacker, but there comes along a freak athlete who’s game tape is spectacular. You take the Linebacker, because you’re sure he’ll be good and you’ll find some use for him at some point. If you take the corner (in this example), you may be picking a guy just to pick him and you’ll come to find out that he isn’t cut out for it and you would have been better off getting a real NFL player, albeit a player you don’t need.

corner was our biggest weekness going into the draft

Going into the draft, our corners were part of the 8th ranked passing defense in the NFL after getting off to a slow start while acclimating to a new defensive coordinator and defensive scheme. The corners we had going into training camp were the same ones that embarrassed the Patriots in New England during the playoffs. At the time of the draft, it was known that both Washington and Webb were ahead of schedule in their recovery.

You’re trying to make it sound like there was some sort of dire need to draft a cornerback in the first round when we were actually in a position to take the BPA. Bagging on Ozzie is the cool thing to do right now, but hindsight is always 20/20. Trading back from the first round was the right move at the time.

Dez Bryant just went down with an injury. Good thing we didn’t pick him!

These type of things are ridiculous! You don’t pick a player to help you for one season, you pick them to play for you for 8-10 years. So what if they start off injured their first year like Kindle or Bryant. It doesnt mean your pick was bad (unless they fell alot because they missed a ton of games with injuries like Dan Cody).

Apropos of our current issues:

http://espn.go.com/blog/afcnorth/post/_/id/15191/zany-tales-from-training-camp

Two years ago, I got to Baltimore Ravens camp early when only rookies, quarterbacks and selected free agents were participating. They didn’t have enough defensive backs to do team drills, so Baltimore used a couple of children who were no taller than five feet. I said they must be mimicking Cleveland’s cornerbacks (Brandon McDonald and Eric Wright) in this drill, which people thought was pretty funny.

I don’t really have a good answer for that. I’m not into the “RavensFan55223311” user names. I’ve been into body mods for a while, and even though I don’t actually have an ampallang, I always thought the word just sounded really cool. Plus, this particular name is never taken. So, it’s partly convenience, and partly because I think it sounds cool. There’s really no deep personal meaning for me, other than the attachment that I’ve developed since adopting the name.

Ronde Barber

Offer a 3rd rounder for him. That should be good enough insurance for our superbowl run….

by Rayisyourdaddy on Aug 1, 2010 5:19 PM EDT up reply actions

No thanks. Based on our recent track record with 3rd round picks (Yanda, Zbi, Webb, Dickson), I think it would be a terrible idea to give that up for a guy who has 1 maybe 2 years left when we can obviously draft someone who will impact us for a very long time.

by Mr MaLoR on Aug 1, 2010 5:31 PM EDT up reply actions

Also at this point Ronde Barber is solely a zone cover corner. He no longer has the speed to play a gut one on one. If you D coordination feels like going with a cover 2 then Barber could be a good pick up. Otherwise yall should find someone better.

He might sign another cornerback but for real i think we are fine becuase like

Raven_all_day said Fabian Washington and Ladarius Webbs are both getting close to be ready real soon to play in the opening season(Fabian Washington more likely since he off pup list).I think Walt Harris, Travis Fisher, K.J Gerald, and Cary Willliams are good as well( given the fact that walt harris is a probowler and Travis Fisher has had great success in the league, but constant injuries stop him from staying on a team)

by jazz20 on Jul 31, 2010 4:09 PM EDT up reply actions

I doubt he brings in anyone else, he brought in 3 corners this offseason and one safety. Fabian is back on the field and they are expecting Webb back in a few weeks. The guys we have are making strides.

I am Getting

The “2001 Season” feeling, except that the Raven’s are not on “Hard Knocks”.

As much as I would love to see a trade, Ozzie seems to only trade during the off-season. It is almost as if he waits to see who gets cut during training camp. One ripple effect this will have is teams might be reluctant to try to sneak through a CB on waivers and hope they can invite them back for the taxi squad. You know if any decent DB does not make the final 53, we will snatch him up.

by vlad755 on Aug 2, 2010 3:39 PM EDT reply actions

So much

For my theory about Ozzie not making trades during training camp…

There’s no evidence that the FO has passed on either of them. This trade happened because Ozzie wanted to get something for Beck instead of just cutting him. Dutch isn’t likely to even make the team; he’s a warm body for training camp. The only thing this signing tells us is that Beck wasn’t much of a quarterback.
