NFL.com's Bucky Brooks Impressed with Ravens' Offense
As announced previously in this space, XFINITY from Comcast has generously agreed to support the best NFL community around -- us! As part of that effort, between now and the end of the 2010 NFL season XFINITY will be sponsoring a variety of special editorial and interactive features on our site.
Analyst Bucky Brooks, from NFL.com, wrote a piece on the Baltimore Ravens and is obviously impressed with the off season upgrades through both free agency and the 2010 NFL Draft. He realizes that while the Ravens defense has been in the top six of the league "nine out of the last ten seasons," the offense has usually been carried by the other side of the ball. Ravens fans know this has been the rule and agree that 2010 will be the exception, with the future looking bright for QB Joe Flacco and his teammates, with offensive weapons everywhere he now looks.
Brooks thinks that WR Derrick Mason might end up benefiting more from these changes than anyone else and he sees both Anquan Boldin and Donte Stallworth being covered by the opposition's top two defensive backs, leaving the always dangerous Mason against a 3rd corner or nickel-back..
The addition of the two tight ends to support Todd Heap, plus the relentless rushing attack should allow Flacco to make the next step with dramatic improvement in 2010. Even though Brooks realizes that the Ravens defense will once again be among the top units in the league, he is not afraid to state that this team might contend for the Super Bowl on the now wide shoulders of what could be its "suddenly explosive offense."

I could see 3-4 guys from our offense going to the Pro Bowl this year.

No it’s not. Just think like I do, I am not a homer, I am a realist.
"However, the true greatness of the Ravens’ line lies in their malevolence, led by right end Haloti Ngata. Simply put, Ngata can’t be blocked by mere mortals. He is not a product of the human species. He is really a creation of a building contractor, made of cinderblocks and some type of flesh-like covering. Throw in Kelly Gregg at nose tackle and behemoth rookie Terrence Cody and you have something truly frightening."

More Bucky Brooks love for the Ravens. The girl doesn’t sound super high on Baltimore, but at least her dress is purple and black.

I hate them, I hate them all. Best thing about this blog is that about 90% of the people here are from the Baltimore area and are true fans. Not like those Pittsburgh pansies. I rather keep it the way it always has been, just the true Baltimorans.

No worries, Mr MaLoR. I take absolutely no offense to that statement.

I grew up in Baltimore, but should I still be offended by this?

…should I still be offended by this?
Only if you’re stuck on this whole “true fan” thing. I’m content to watch the Ravens play from August to February, cheering when they win and entering a beer-induced catatonia when they lose. Beyond that, I think there are varying degrees of being informed amongst the fan base. Dividing us up as true fans and not true fans is just a way for some fans to feel better about themselves.

You can be a true fan all you want, and you definitely are. I base that statement off the the wagon riders all over the country, aka Steeler fans.

I think what will be interesting to see is how our offensive identity evolves. We’ve always been a run first team but for those first three games last season, you saw a glimpse of the offensive explosion that was possible. I understand if it was versus lesser teams except maybe the Chargers which I think I recall being a bad defense at the time but feel free to correct me. Now with these new weapons and the addition of Zorn I’m really curious to see: A. The growth of Flacco. and B. If the offensive identity will shift some good/bad or become more balanced?

It should remain a run 1st offense
Three Pro Bowl capable running backs suggests that. Once Flacco establishes his consistentcy throwing the football inside the numbers the offenseive will become more explosive vertically and DC’s will have one more reason to stay up at night preparing to stop the Ravens balanced but potent offense. That balance will put DC’s in a quandry.
Yeah, run first should always be the core of our identity but now with the improved passing game I’m excited to see how balanced we become.

real fan?
I was born in Annapolis and moved to Georgia when I was 8. Both sides of my family live in Annapolis beside me, my parents and a few cousins. I grew up in a Skins house but I’ve been loyal to the Ravens since 96. Go to any sports bar in Savannah Georgia and ask them if there are any Ravens fans in the city. Bet they will say my name. I am a TRUE RAVEN’S fan NOT from BALTIMORE and spent most of my life in Georgia. So much for that “true fan” hogwash.

The Way it is...
Our offensive game plan will surely be based on the other teams weakness…if you can’t stop the run,we are going to run over you,if you can’t stop the pass,we will pass over you,our O & D lines are smash mouth types, which helps he it simple and other teams already know one thing about THE RAVENS,your going to get beat up in the process, ask the Pats!
