Around SBN: Ray Allen Fighting Age, Injury And His New Role

At the recent rookie symposium, Terrence Cody told Steve Wyche not to be surprised if the Ravens use him in offensive goal-line packages next season. Offensive coordinator Cam Cameron has already used Haloti Ngata on the goal-line, and it isn't hard to imagine him using Cody in the same way.

Terrence Cody played in offensive goal-line sets at Alabama and was very effective in that role.

Haha on that play, he pretty much kept the whole Arkansas defense 10 yards away from Ingram. Can’t wait to see him do that to the Steelers.

  1. is lucky to be alive. Imagine McClain lined up behind Cody and Ngata on 4th and 1.

by Georgia Raven on Jul 1, 2010 2:15 AM EDT via mobile reply actions

That’s over a half-ton in three guys… who would technically be playing skill positions.

Throw in the fact that they could use Chris Chester as a swing tackle/third tight-end, and the Ravens could have one of the heaviest and most powerful goal-line sets in the history of the game. The Ravens lineup would be Flacco (230 lb), Oher (309 lb), Grubbs (315 lb), Birk (309 lb), Yanda (310 lb), Gaither (330 lb), Chester (305 lb), Heap (250 lb), McClain (260 lb), Ngata (345 lb) and Cody (360 lb). That’s an amazing total of 3,323 pounds! That’s an average weight of 302 pounds per player. It could be even more if they substituted Heap with Cousins, but that would just be ridiculous.

I wonder if that would be an NFL record for the heaviest set every used on offense.

Please stop, you are making me tear up because of the beauty of that setup.

"However, the true greatness of the Ravens’ line lies in their malevolence, led by right end Haloti Ngata. Simply put, Ngata can’t be blocked by mere mortals. He is not a product of the human species. He is really a creation of a building contractor, made of cinderblocks and some type of flesh-like covering. Throw in Kelly Gregg at nose tackle and behemoth rookie Terrence Cody and you have something truly frightening."

Why not throw Ramon Harewood (341 lb) into the mix? He’s got a rugby background too, just like this guy: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uh1OaSHUX9s

Wow

I haven’t checked but I have to think that it would be the first set in NFL history, offensive or defensive, to have an average player weight of greater then three hundred pounds.

Make it happen Ravens.

If I was that defense,...

I’d line up and then just ….step back and let him in!

I thought we talked about this guys

We all know that Cody is too fat to do anything but play 10 downs a game on defense. He will be out of the league in 2 years because of obesity. Just listen to the Steeler fans, they will tell you the same. Gosh!

I’ve always wanted to know how to beat my wife, kids, and dog, start a drinking problem, yet somehow keep an sense of superiority because my team spent 30 years between championships but somehow those are still relevant to my current team’s dominance.

by ATXRaven on Jul 2, 2010 9:24 AM EDT up reply actions

Every team

has some players that mess up. As for the latter part, 2 championships in the last 6 years are relevant to the current team’s dominance. Which is more championship yours has won since they got to B-More. We can argue all day but end the end the Steelers do have a rich history to lean on. Its not irrelevant because it shapes how the team is today. Who knows, if they didn’t win those 4 championships in the 70’s then management might have tried a different approach and not hold on to coaches so long. Everything as we know it now could be altered. So the history does matter. I know you don’t want to hear it because it happened so long ago.

I like the creativity but how mad would everyone be if Ngata or Cody suffered a knee injury. We all seen what happened to Webb when he was being over-utilized.

It depends on how successful the play was.

He looks fatter than Cody to me. He was 340 pounds but was 2 inches shorter than Cody.

I bet he looked worse than Cody with his shirt off.

by BAL_Hawk on Jul 2, 2010 9:51 AM EDT up reply actions

Tell you what though, he was getting some speed and power on that TD run in the Superbowl. I could see Ngata and Cody doing the same, it would be physically impossible to stop them from getting 1 yard.

I think most Steelers Fan

would be worried about Cody’s durability and endurance even if he was a Steeler. That being said, I have no idea how Cody will do. Taking a waiting and seeing approach with this guy. Nothing wrong with that right?

Everything is wrong with that. There is a reason Cody was recruited to Baltimore by this blog 2-3 months before the draft even happened, because we know how freaking good this guy is while not being ignorant and looking at his stomach and turning away. He is a god to us.

He’s our Shaun Rogers.

by BAL_Hawk on Jul 2, 2010 10:59 AM EDT up reply actions

No guy is a sure thing

Everyone knows that. Malor come on, I’m not doubting the guy skills he can become good. But you know just as I do that it doesn’t always materialize like that. If that was the case every #1 pick would be a hall of famer. But their not because people don’t live up to expectations all the time. Nothing wrong with saying lets wait and see what he does first. Whether you like it or not he isn’t a god, he is a man, just like you and me. He bleeds like anyone else. I’m not saying he is going to eat himself out of the league in 2 years, but I’m also not saying he is going to be the next Shaun Rogers or whatever. But all I am saying is I don’t know, I’ll wait and see. Nothing wrong with that. The same thing with the Steelers Draft picks, Pouncey could be a flop, so can worlids. We’ll see though.

Steelers football is 60 mins.

You’re absolutely right, and we realize that Cody isn’t Shaun Rogers yet. We just have a very good feeling about Cody. Newsome is known for finding gems in the 2-3 rounds, and Cody just seems like a prototypical Ozzie Newsome gem. He fits what the Ravens do one defense. Not only that, but he just seems like one of those great players that fall in the draft for stupid reasons (Anquan Boldin, Lamarr Woodley, Steve Smith, Ray Lewis, Shannon Sharpe, Terrell Davis). Everything about Cody screams blockbuster pick to fans that are really familiar with how things go in Baltimore.

We’re not saying that he’s a lock to be great. We’re just saying that everything seems to be aligned for him to be awesome.

must disagree, no touchdown is worth losing Ngata. havent seen cody on the field yet. When Ngata didnt play at the bengals game what happen?

by Raven_all_day on Jul 1, 2010 7:35 PM EDT reply actions

Yeah that was a nightmare. The package itself is a fun idea, as was the Suggs package. So if we were to see it 2 or 3 times over the course of the season, than I’d have no problem. But only when it was needed (unlike having Webb returning kicks in the 4th Qtr of a blowout victory).

"Times have not become more violent. They have just become more televised."

You use them - Ngata and Cody

In big game situations where it is worth the minimal, albeit existent risk. I would not be happy if they were injured on offense in a 32 point pasting of the Bucs this year. In big spots against elite teams I want our best team on the field. It may be a risk, but they could be hurt on defense (yet they still play there), right?
