I think it is a great move. I actually mentioned this in a comment a few months ago because the veteran that Bulger is could really help Joe.

Also, this basically means that Troy Smith is going to be traded and that talks have already started with Ozzie and other teams. We could possibly package together Troy and some other players/draft picks to get a big time contributor at another position, maybe CB.

I think Buffalo is probably the place. That is the only team I can think of that could possibly want Troy Smith since they have no starting QB right now.

Now that I think about it if we could get something for Smith that would be great. But my initial response was like BW’s. What the hell? Was there talk about this that I just missed?

by RulingWalnut on Jun 23, 2010 7:40 PM EDT up reply actions

I agree. I think adding a proven veteran to this team can only help Joe and this team in general. Interesting to see what transpires after this…

by 60minuteassassin on Jun 23, 2010 7:45 PM EDT up reply actions

I remember Joe talking about how much help Todd Bouman was to Joe when we had him on our team in 2008. Bulger is a guy who has had some very good success in St.Louis and been to a pro bowl. This can only be an upgrade, and if Ozzie thinks so, then we should agree.

In Oz We Trust

Hey, I’m always up for drinking the Ozzie Kool-Aid. All Hail the Wizard of Oz. Plus, we now have a semi-solid backup just in case.

Just found out a pretty cool stat about Bulger. He is the fastest QB in NFL history to reach 1,000 completions (45 games). It took Dan Marino 49 games.

Brian Brohm

has just as much or more upside than Troy Smith. I think a team like Carolina or TB is more likely

by Rayisyourdaddy on Jun 24, 2010 12:24 AM EDT up reply actions

Really? Why would Carolina trade for Troy when they just drafted Clausen and also like what they see in Matt Moore? Tampa has Freeman and he is going to be the starter, so I do not see why they would want to bring Troy in for a back up role and why we would want to get rid of him so he can be another back-up.

If Troy gets traded, he is going to go to a team where he has a legitimate shot to start. Now there might not be many of them, but I do not see Carolina and Tampa Bay being likely candidates.

You have to hate losing more than you love winning.

by Mr MaLoR on Jun 24, 2010 12:51 AM EDT up reply actions

dude, Troy is NOT a starter

Don’t be dense dude.

No one bothered to sign him this offseason when all we wanted for him was a 6th rounder. Would you spend a 6th rounder to get a starting QB? So would every single team in the league. So ask yourself, if someone wants him now, what are they offering? a 7th rounder? there is no way someone wants him as a starter. It is either somewhere that he will compete. somewhere he can start eventually (they have a veteran incumbent), or somewhere they are happy with their starter but do not have a great backup option if the starter goes down. Do you think Carolina throws Claussen in the fire if Moore gets injured week 3? Who is starting in TB if Freeman goes down?

You can classify the teams in the league under 3 titles:

No way in hell Troy starts: Atl, NE, Ind, Bal, NYG, NYJ, SD, Mia, Cin, Pit, Ten, Hou, KC, Dal, Phi, Was, Chi, Det, GB, NO, SF, TB, Car, Min, Jax (24 teams).
Teams that didn’t want Troy before and went in other directions via the draft, FA, and trade: Stl, Oak, Sea, Cle, Ari, Den, Buf.

Only teams he would have a chance to do anything on are the 2nd list, and none of those teams showed interest in him when his tender was a 6th rounder, so what has changed.

by Mr MaLoR on Jun 24, 2010 9:35 AM EDT up reply actions

They’re not going to trade Beck. Cameron loves him and used a second round pick on him in Miami.

I think that the Ravens may just release Smith outright. The Ravens are a classy organization and don’t want players who don’t want to be there. The funny part is… Cleveland probably won’t claim Smith even if he clears waivers. He said he’d crawl to Cleveland but probably won’t get the opportunity.

Flacco's Health

Great move! Maybe some question to Joe’s hip injury? Hopefully not! But bulged will bring veteran experience to help Flacco

by Brocksolid on Jun 23, 2010 8:03 PM EDT via mobile reply actions

Also, should Joe go down I think we could get by on Bulger, at least for a few games. We can run the ball and get at least competent QB play. Joe going down was one of my worries if we went for a SB, not that is eased a bit.

by davver on Jun 23, 2010 8:04 PM EDT reply actions

i think that's the plan

If Joe goes down we’re still built to win a few weeks without him. That way if there is some injury, we can still have our playoff hopes alive when Flacco comes back.

This is a great insurance policy

Maybe late in the year last year when Flacco was playing injured, Harbs and Ozzie didn’t feel comfortable putting our playoff hopes in Troy/Becks hands. I personally would feel more comfortable putting the ball in Bulgers hands, than in two unproven backups (no offense guys). But all in all this move tells me one thing, Ozzie is loading up for an “SUPER BOWL OR BUST” type of year……….god it’s good to be a Ravens fan right now!

agreed

also, it seems like Flacco wants to play at a lower weight this year to improve his mobility, this is insurance in case he gets poped.

by davver on Jun 23, 2010 9:18 PM EDT up reply actions

Agree

Oz obviously is drinking the same purple Kool Aide we are and thinks this team is definitely primed for a Super Bowl run. You have to be prepared for the unknown and obviously the comfort level of bringing in either Troy or Beck and staying on the Super Bowl track was not that high. Bulger could be our Earl Morrall. It may be worth repeating a little Baltimore Colts history for you youngsters :)

In 1968, 13 year veteran Earl Morrall was traded to the Baltimore Colts from the NY Giants. When regular Colts signal caller Johnny Unitas was injured in the final exhibition game, Morrall became the team’s starter. Morrall proceeded to lead the Colts to a 13-1 record, and then added two playoff victories en route to winning the NFL’s Most Valuable Player award for leading the Colts to Super Bowl III.

We don’t need to revisit what happened in Super Bowl III here – suffice it to say a now healthy Johnny U should have started that game – but we would never have gotten there without a veteran like Earl Morrall filling in to lead the team.

We kinda stole their team. As Balt.Colts fans, I think we can understand his pain. As the fan, he’s really powerless in what happens to his franchise. The only thing he can do is lash out at the Franchise’s owner who moved the team.

I agree Art should be in the Hall of Fame. I do see where Cleveland fans are coming from too.

by BmoreBlitz on Jun 24, 2010 10:03 AM EDT up reply actions

Still a big difference when you are guaranteed to keep your team’s history, name, colors etc and you get a team back in three years. They only went without a team for three years. I went without knowing a home team from when I was born to a teenager. Essentially what happened to Clevland is the equivalent of the NCAA banning USC from bowl appearances for a few years.

by ATXRaven on Jun 24, 2010 11:19 AM EDT up reply actions

I hear ya. Good Points.

I do think he has the right to be pissed at us though. We stole his football team. Imagine if the Ravens moved to LA and we didn’t have football for three years. I’d want to effing murder someone. First person I’d blame was the owner. Then I’d probably hold a grudge till we got another team, and the team turned in a winning season. After that, I’d probably let it go.

J.W. - It is called an analogy dipwad

To clarify for your simple mind, an analogy is a comparison based upon similarity. In this case, the comparison is between the two similar teams signing of a capable veteran QB to sustain a Super Bowl run in case their starting QB is injured.

I guess you think that since the Colts have been gone for over 24 years, all prior history gets deleted? And Unitas and Morrall actually played for the Indianapolis Colts? That must mean I was born and grew up in Indy too. Wow – thanks for your stunning and insightful commentary.

I guess that also means you now think that Jim Brown was the best running back in Baltimore football history.

"What we've got here is failure to communicate."

Im behind Flacco but if he were to get injured what would happen if Bulger returns to pro bowl form behind our #3 ranked offensive line and top 5 running game, not to mention the receivers we have.

for real...

This is a great move by the Ravens… They are saying that they have a legit chance at a super bowl this year and if something were to happen to Flacco they will have an ex-pro bowler waiting to fit into an amazingly talented offense.

Troy may be good but he is inexperienced with leading a group of stars into the play-offs. Same with Beck. Buldger has been there before he knows how to lead and win…

The money may be a little much but where else are you gonna find that resume for a back up qb???

Congratulations to Joe Haden!!! now you get to be run over by Anquan Boldin for the next three years!! -Me

The question is:

Do we want three QB’s onthe roster (Flacco, Bulger, Beck) who are pure drop back passers? Or do we want to have that “x-facotr” in Troy Smith? Or does it make sense to have three guys who can run the exact same system no matter what QB is in there, so the gameplan doesn’t change just because the QB does. Smith was not that pocket passer so it works both ways.

Only the Wizard truly knows what will happen…

the only issue

is that you’re probably not going to put bulger at 3rd on the depth chart. and if smith is 3rd and he comes into the game as the x-factor, flacco couldnt go back in.

as a bengals fan, i really wanted bulger though. our backups are horrid. solid pickup for you guys.
