More on Syracuse WR Mike Williams
Late last month, I put up a FanPost on the Orangemen's former wide receiver, who was in the midst of putting up great numbers before he suspiciously disappeared off the radar screen, leaving the team under questionable circumstances. Since then, however, he's been generating a decent amount of whispering about what a possible late round steal he could be in the NFL Draft coming up in exactly two weeks.
Williams recently visited a bunch of NFL teams, including the Baltimore Ravens. The National Football Post's Aaron Wilson had a few moments to talk with Williams and here is the link to their Q&A with his excitement of being blown away by the Ravens Practice Facility and GM Ozzie Newsome.
The opinions posted here are those of the administrator of this blog and his loyal readers. They are in no way official comments from the team, and should not be misconstued as such, even though he thinks he could do just as well or even a better job!

As a fromer Syracuse season ticket holder...
I’ve watched Mike play quite a bit. In fact, I wish I saw him play more, but I couldn’t because he was always away from the team. I won’t get into why, that is fairly common knowledge to this point, as I saw you covered him before. As far as Mike Williams the player, he has real skills. Size, strength, good hands, decent route runner… he has it all. He never had a real QB (and by real, I mean decent) throwing him the ball, and his season long suspension a few years ago really seemed to distance himself from the rest of the team in a way. Now, that could have been due to the coaching change and subsequent departure of players and influx of new youth. If it was based on skills alone, he’s worth an early pick on, second round area, in my opinion. And since it’s not all about skills, getting him after that would be a steal as far as I’m concerned. He’d be a good pick up for you though, with an eye on the future after Mason and Stallworth (one year deal).

Said he had problems in academics
I had class issues with my academics. I let them know it was in-school issues."
Just make sure you guys don’t draft him. You got Sweed, no need for Williams.

off-the-field issues
funny thing about off-the-field issues is that they aren’t big issues unless they keep you off-the-field. Obviously the school thing was a problem in college, but that doesn’t bother me nearly as much as an arrest record would, seeing as we’re not asking him to pass Poli Sci 101 out in Owings Mills.

Yup, this guy has Baltimore written all over him
Once I hear about how impressed players are with out team and everything about it, they need to be here. Williams is our guy.
You have to hate losing more than you love winning.
Love this guy already.
How was your visit with the Ravens?
Williams: "Oh man, that’s a great facility. I’ve never seen anything like that before. They say it’s one of the top two facilities in the NFL. I met all the coaches and saw the players and looked at all the records. It was something I had always dreamed about. I saw Anquan Boldin and Ray Lewis.
“Ozzie Newsome is one of the coolest GMs I’ve ever met. I walked in his office and the first thing he asked me was if I knew anything about Alabama. I said, ‘Yeah, you played there.’ It’s crazy sitting across from a guy like that. It’s something I always dreamed of.”

What do you want the teams to know about you as a person?
Williams: “I want to let them know that I don’t have off-the-field issues. I had class issues with my academics. I’ve never been arrested. I’ve never failed a drug test. I never got in any trouble with the cops. I let them know it was in-school issues.”

What kind of influence did your mother have on you as a single parent and what do you plan to do for her when you get drafted?
“I want to take care of my mom [Mary Rosenthal]. That’s the first thing I’m going to do. I won’t do nothing for myself. She’s the top priority. My mom taught me how to play football. She tried to play high school football, but they wouldn’t let her play. My dad was never around, so every Father’s Day my mom got a card. She was my mother and my father.”

He ballooned up to 222 lbs for his pro day, while his playing weight at Syracuse was around 204. I’m alright with some character issues, but you should never be that out of shape for a job interview.
whatever
like the guy before said—if he’s there in the 5th, you take this guy.

Reportedly, he quit the team
because he was afraid of getting kicked off after breaking curfew and going out w/ some friends/teammates and getting into a car accident.

That was the story around town too...
But I don’t know if it was ever substantiated.

but does something like that really scare you away in the 5th round?
I mean, we’re not talking about your 1st rounder here… we’re talking about a low-risk investment in a guy who has blatant boom-potential.

Not at all. He had academic issues from what he has told everyone, and I am sure he did not lie about that. He struggled in school a little when he took a gen ed class. Not doing well in some chemistry, calculus or physics class is not uncommon in college. He will be learning football in the NFL, not that other stuff. And I am pretty sure this guy knows football by now. I’ll take academic issue over legal issue any day.

Nope, me neither...
He can play, and in the fifth, that’s all that matters.

National Football Post has Williams
rated as the 7th best WR in the draft. Pretty high ranking for a guy we might be able to get in the last three rounds.

if he makes it out of the 3rd round I'll buy you lunch
I was going to say 2nd round (where I think he’ll go) but i don’t know how much you eat :)

You're on
and I’ll eat modestly, especially on a first date!
