Foxworth Being Groomed for Players Union President?
The Rumor Mill is in full force on this one, as ProFootballTalk.com reported a while ago that there was the thought that Baltimore Ravens cornerback Domonique Foxworth is on a track to become the National Football League Player's Association (NFLPA) President in the not-so-distant future.
Apparently, Foxworth is a favorite of current NFLPA Executive Director DeMaurice Smith. The current President of the NFLPA is New York Jets center, Kevin Mawae. Foxworth ran against and lost to Mawae in the recent union election, but that might have been to expose Domonique to the process for a future run for the title. At the same time, Foxworth and Mawae are friends, so the election competition was not an adversarial position.

Do you
ever wonder if Foxworth is more worried about the players union then becoming the best player possible for the Ravens? Unlike Flacco, Rice, Lewis, Webb you always hear them working out and training. But Foxworth, only thing you ever hear him doing is something involving the players union.

Oh, I don't know about that
It’s pretty easy to assume Foxworth is ‘distracted’ by his union duties. NFL careers can be short curcuited anytime by injury and post career ambitions are a smart thing to consider as long they don’t take away from his focus/preparation for the season and games.
As for the union, they will be in an up hill battle moving forward and the best people will be needed in the leadership positions. After the re-election of Mawae there can be no confusion about that leadership for the forseable future even though every TV shot I see of DeMaurice Smith has Foxworth in the frame and not Mawae (I don’t think this is a coincidence and Smith may want Foxworth but the Union memebership wants Mawae). We also must remember that this is battle for the hearts and minds of the fans and the manipulation of images and information is a key to winning that support for the owners. A union that appears to be fragmented is a win-win for the league.
You want football in 2011
Then be glad you’ve got smart union reps putting in the time to make a deal happen.
A lot of Union Reps are great players
and if it doesn’t distract them, than it shouldn’t be an issue with Domonique. Besides, most of the players have off the field things going on in their lives without issue.
