The Baltimore Ravens Draft Wrap-up
Seeing as all the other posts about the draft are kind of scattered and breaking news-like posts, I wanted there to be a formal post, So here it is. And may I say thank you Denver and Tim Tebow? Without you guys, our draft wouldn't have been as good as it was.
(More after the "Jump"......)
2nd Round:
Sergio Kindle: OLB Texas
Taking Sergio Kindle 43rd overall in the draft with the pick obtained from the Denver Broncos was the beginning of a great draft for the Baltimore Ravens.

Highlights:
Terrence "Mount" Cody: NT Alabama:
"Fat-ass" was a great pick for the Baltimore Ravens because he adds a physical presence to the defensive line. Adding him to our hybrid defense makes out 4-3 line 1.5 tons of terror for the oppsoing team's QB.

3rd Round:
Ed Dickson: TE Oregon
Ed Dickson was a great pick for the Baltimore Ravens, he could possibly Heap's successor when he decides that it's time to retire. The best part about the pick is that it was BPA and we filled a need.

4th Round:
Dennis Pitta: TE Brigham Young
I'm not really a huge fan of this pick considering there was a TE selected in the previous round. But his stats are great and he looks like a physical TE and only time will tell.

Highlights:
5th Round:
David Reed: WR Utah
Not much known, but if Ozzie liked him, he must be good. He's a proto-typical WR; tall and fast. the only problem I can see is him being small for his height. He's 6-1 and 186 pounds, the suggested weight for a WR that height is about 200-210 pounds.

Highlights:
Yeah, I know, this highlight sucks. When you are drafted this late, you are lucky to have highlights of any sort.
Arthur Jones: NT Syracuse
I Don't understand this pick and think he will just be a Practice Squad guy. I mean we already drafted a NT, but whatever, Ozzie is always right.

Highlights:
6th Round:
Ramon Harewood: OT Morehouse:
The 6-foot-6, 340-pound tackle from Morehouse is still raw, with just three years of football on his resume before going to college, but he has massive upside to go along with his massive size.
Stats:
None, he's an offensive line man
Highlights:
Ditto for highlights as well.
Thanks for the great draft Ozzie.

Excellent post, but the defensive lineman they drafted in the fifth round is actually Arthur Jones from Syracuse… not Arthur Moats.

When Ngata and Cody are in there at the same time, the combination will be called “Halody.”

There is no way Jones will be on our practice squad. This guy was drafted way later than he should have been and will definitely have an impact on this defense. I see Jones definitely taking over the role that Justin Bannan had.

Well I mean when would we use him?
IMO W should have used that pick on Sydquan Thompson.

Syd’Quan was barely even drafted, but you wanted to take him 2 rounds before? No thanks. Thompson is a solid player, but Jones was an absolute steal. He reminds me so much of Jay Ratliff from the Cowboys.

But when and how would we use him?

I think he will be the primary guy behind Ngata. They have very similar skill sets and Jones would work out pretty well at RE in our 3-4 defense.
You have to hate losing more than you love winning.
I’ve been thinking about the line-up already…
I think that Cody will play nose tackle with Gregg backing him up. Ngata should play right end (or RDT) with Jones backing him up. The left end position should be up for competition, and I think that it will be a rotation of Kruger, Pryce and Redding. I believe that the Ravens want Kruger to win the job but aren’t just going to hand it over.
Another cool possibility is a result of Kindle’s addition. I have a feeling that Kindle will be hard to get off the field. Therefore, the Ravens are going to be able to get creative with Jarrett Johnson. Johnson is too talented to not be on the field, so the Ravens will probably play him at defensive end (on four man fronts) and middle linebacker. I read a quote where Harbaugh was talking about Johnson playing in the middle.
i like that but what about the other guys that have been making strides in thre development to play the middle
by Raven_all_day on Apr 24, 2010 9:18 PM EDT up reply actions
Talavou and McKinney? They are serviceable, but Ozzie definitely saw that they were not going to be the answer if god forbid anything happens to our starters.
You have to hate losing more than you love winning.
Those guys were just situation run stuffers. They won’t need those guys (as much) now that they have an every-down run stuffer. They’ll probably make the team since you need to put 4-5 big guys on the line in goal-line sets.
I believe that the Ravens want Kruger to win the job but aren’t just going to hand it over.
I totally agree with this. The coaches have high regards for Paul and are really making sure he makes all the right moves during the off-season to have as big of an impact as possible.
I have a feeling that Kindle will be hard to get off the field.
Definitely! As grateful as I am to have Cody with us, I am even more excited to see Kindle out there.
You have to hate losing more than you love winning.
JJ and Ray-Ray
I’m thinking with Kindle playing especially on passing downs, JJ will likely move to the middle and often it will be Ray that comes off. That will help our back end in defense.
Dude...
There is the possibility that Arthur could have as big of an impact as Cody. He was originally a 1st round talent before injuries derailed him last year. That is not a knock on Cody, but telling of Arthur’s upside. Then again, having a NFL player named Arthur amuses me!

Arthur Jones: NT Syracuse

Jones will definitely be more than a practice squad player. I have high hopes for him. He has talent equivalent to Dwan Edwards right now and will only get better. He can play DE and DT on the Ravens defense and is a perfect fit since he can move around. I love the pick.
I guess he could play RE in our 4-3 mose in the hybrid defense
I just think that a CB such as Syd Thompson would have been better.

they signed two undrafted corners, maybe one of them is the answer or maybe both.
by Raven_all_day on Apr 24, 2010 8:57 PM EDT up reply actions
Right. And it’s better to limp through the first few weeks than waste our first round pick on a position that we don’t “need.”
CB not a need? We didn’t draft one this year! What a failure! The world is coming to an end!!!! Ahhhhhh
You have to hate losing more than you love winning.
i will say this, with the new additions on offense we will be a top tier scoring team. Even if the corners are weak in the games without Webb and Washington we shud still win games

Is anyone else fire-up about the Suggs-Kindle combination. These guys are going to be flat-out vicious, and with Cody and Ngata eating up the entire offensive line, I cannot imagine the possibilities. The Ravens already had the number three defense in the league. I’d be surprised if they weren’t the best nest season.
Cody just adds so much flexibility, and Kindle is the coup de grace.
When watching film on Kindle for the last few months, I honestly could not find a better comparison than Suggs for Kindle. He is slightly smaller than Suggs, which means he will not be playing DE really, but is faster than Suggs with that same intensity.
Only thing is that he is going to be the back-up for JJ, but I definitely see Mattison coming up with defensive schemes where we will rotate JJ and Kindle for different looks. This guy was a freaking steal.
You have to hate losing more than you love winning.
Kindle was a steal.
As good as Jarrett Johnson is, I think that Kindle is going to be hard to take off the field because of his edge rushing ability. Johnson can do many things better than Kindle, but Kindle is the better pass rusher. Therefore, I see the Ravens using Johnson at defensive end and middle linebacker more. Middle linebacker would showcase Johnson’s underrated coverage abilities. Heck… I can even see him at defensive tackle. He’s a really great hybrid player.
he may be quicker but not faster. Suggs ran a 4.6 and Kindle 4.7. But they are equally effective
by Raven_all_day on Apr 24, 2010 9:22 PM EDT up reply actions
Yea, I stand corrected. When coming off the edge, initial quickness is definitely more important than down field speed, which I think Kindle has over Suggs. Gonna be so much fun to watch him play.

There will be some good linebackers not making the team this training camp.
I wouldn’t be surprised if Antwan Barnes was traded during training camp like Derrick Martin last year.
in fact i can see us getting picks for next years draft with a few of them

He’s another guy that will be hard to keep off the field. They will probably split playing time between Johnson, Lewis and Ellerbe. I get the feeling that the Ravens are trying to take pressure off Ray. They may even be trying to prepare the defense for his retirement next season (my gut feeling).
he will play for 10 more seasons
he wll be 2020 MVP like Brett Favre

Kindle has more short-speed and more of a burst. He’s also more violent and reminds me of Bart Scott as a hitter.
Suggs is still a better run defender, but it’s hard to find any OLB that plays the run as well as Suggs.

I definitely agree. He was one of my “steals.” Big back with great speed.

And he can play 3 downs
He did it alot in Miami and he often broke off 6-7 yard runs like 10-12 times a game. I think he could be a 30 carry per game back.

Johnson
Third and long pass situations:
Ngata, Kruger, Pryce front 3
Suggs/Kindle on either side rushing the passer
Jarret Johnson either blitzing the A/B gaps or dropping to coverage.
Mel Kiper's grade on our draft.
Baltimore Ravens
Summary: For top grades, it’s a contrast in styles. Seattle had high picks and got great fits, then waited and got Golden Tate. Baltimore traded down and still loaded up on talent all over the place. In Round 2, they got both Sergio Kindle and Terrence Cody, a pair of guys who could have landed in the first round. They get a pair of fantastic tight end prospects in Ed Dickson and Dennis Pitta, continuing a promise to both buy and draft options for Joe Flacco. Love the Arthur Jones pick, a one-time Big Board guy who fell to the fifth round, mostly because of health issues. Even in the sixth, the Ravens got Ramon Harewood, a small-college tackle prospect who has a chance to develop.

Just numbers I would like to see those guys get. The only open number in the 50’s is 57, so Kindle might get that one. Lamar Divens has 96 right now, but I want Kindle to take that over. He is Adalius 2.0 with better pass rushing skills.
David Hale has 62 for Cody right now, so 78 could be an option. Not sure, just wanted to see their names on the back of the all black.
You have to hate losing more than you love winning.
I want Kindle to get 57
It just looks right, and how do you feel about #98 for Cody? Is anyone using that?

Talavou is. But I can only imagine we will switch some numbers around to get the numbers that Kindle and Cody want. Between Dickson and Pitta, I think one of them will be in the 40’s. Hopefully Pitta, he looks like a #44 guy and Dickson should get #88.
You have to hate losing more than you love winning.
I think Dickson is more of an 80 or 82-83
Pitta is a 47

Even though we didn’t grab a corner, this draft was great! We upgraded the core of our 3rd rank D. That is huge. The key to a good D is the D line. With the additions we made, our D line could be one of the best now. Our front 7 is loaded with hybrid players that will allow us to 1 match up with any situation we face and 2 make it almost impossible for teams to fully prep for us in a week. Sure would be nice to see “organized chaos” used more often with our front 7.
I’m not down playing our offensive pick ups at all. I just feel that if they don’t score, we won’t lose.
by Georgia Raven on Apr 25, 2010 7:53 AM EDT via mobile reply actions
I also expect us to have heavy rotation on our D line to keep everyone (well more like “fat ass”) fresh.
by Georgia Raven on Apr 25, 2010 7:56 AM EDT via mobile reply actions
one more thing
Corner is now our TOP PRIORITY!!! We play Cinci week 2 and they are LOADED at wr. Do we even have enough corners to cover them in a 4 or 5 wide set? The fact of the matter is that Webb and Washington probably won’t be 100% until late in the season or even next year. WE NEED HARPER!!!
by Georgia Raven on Apr 25, 2010 8:03 AM EDT via mobile reply actions
loaded??? lol

Double check me on this, but I believe that we finished last season with the number eight passing defense in the league, and scored top-ten in all major pass defense categories.
Also, we accomplished that with a new defensive coordinator and three new corner backs (including a rookie).
Also, we’ll start the season with a corps of defensive backs at least as good as the one that held New England’s model/QB Tom Brady to 23/42 for 154 yards and three interceptions in the playoffs.
Also, we can expect improved pass rushing capabilities this season, which will only make our secondary look even better.
I don’t think our current corner back situation is quite the apocalyptic event that the Internet Chicken Littles are making it out to be. We could use a little depth to start the season, but that’s hardly a Defcon-2 situation.
Water covers 2/3 of the Earth's surface. Ed Reed covers the rest.

He is a UFA, so we could maybe pick him up. He is a little old, but we just need a few stop gaps for this year at CB until we can work the position again next year.

i know its a game but when i signed then cornerback mckenzie to the ravens

Haha, oh Madden. It does make life so much better. I added Boldin to my team way before the trade happened and caught about 75 passes for 1100 yards and 17 tds.

As far as a trade, I really am not sure. I have not really gotten anymore information on the situation aside from the rumor that we are interested in making a trade. Al Harris be a good option, but Green Bay didn’t draft a CB so I am not sure if they would want to give that up.
Only reason I cannot come up with anything is because I am unsure of what we would want to give up for a CB at this point. Do we give up draft picks next year, players? And how much value of those picks or players for who? Just hard to gauge at this point.
You have to hate losing more than you love winning.
If we have to
the ravens need to do whatever it takes (within reason) to sign a vetern corner who can fill in while Webb gets healthy. They have all the pieces to go to the SB this year. If you going to make teams 1 dimensional by stuffing the run, you better a have at least a decent secondary, even for next years draft picks. We are too close to an AFC title. This team is LOADED.
Exactly! The Ravens are ready! An older, wiser, physical corner would be perfect. Teams won’t have the time to take 5 step drops with our revamped pass rush. So we won’t have to worry about him havin to cover for too long. + we have #20 flying over top.
by Georgia Raven on Apr 25, 2010 6:53 PM EDT via mobile reply actions
Dickson!
Looks like a really tall WR. I like the look of him, but do not see any reason to teach him how to block. Use him as a WR and utilize his ball skills. Looks like we got a great “WR” in the middle rounds….

Yea for real. Not every TE should have to have blocking as one of their biggest assets. Bring in another lineman or FB if you need blocking and let Dickson run wild.

Using a Mike Mayock term… Dickson is a “rocked-up wide receiver.”
