A Little Help?

Hi.  My name is Hans, and I am an SB Nation Member Saints Fan who hangs out over at Canal Street Chronicles.  I am participating in our Community Mock Draft, and I'll be selecting for the Ravens near the end of the month (March 27th, to be exact).

It would be extremely helpful for me to hear from the Beatdown Brain Trust on what areas of need you feel your team has, as well as some players you feel might be realistically available at your first-round draft slot.  The way it's playing out so far over there in people's selections is mostly serious with deft touches of sarcasm, humor, and embedded videos, so comments that include all those will be useful, too.  Here's an example or two of what I'm talking about.

Thanks in advance for whatever assistance you can provide...

The opinions posted here are those of the administrator of this blog and his loyal readers. They are in no way official comments from the team, and should not be misconstued as such, even though he thinks he could do just as well or even a better job!

Dont shy away from Best Player Available on your board.

That is is way Ozzie Newsome drafts. Obviously if it is a OL, QB or RB, the Ravens would not take him. Here is our needs in order.

1. DE
2. TE
3. CB (only because it looks like we will be working Free Agency to fill some holes)
4. WR
5. LB

We really like Carlos Dunlap out of Florida. He fits our 3-4 scheme really well. If a guy like Arrellious Benn or Demaryious Thomas drops, be nice to get him. Kyle Wilson at CB if he is there. TE Jermaine Gresham is a favorite around here. I like Sean Weatherspoon alot and think he could be a great Raven.

+1

I reallly like this Weatherspoon kid too. He posseses all the talent and intagibles one looks for in a young prospect. His personality would fit right in as a Raven and he really understands how to play the game (run fit and cover concepts). He was Specials Teams POY in the conference as a true freshman at Mizzou. Already has his degree in Communications and did it in 3.5 years. Oh yeah, this kid is all Raven.

Yea for sure. The reason I like him is because he could take Suggs spot as OLB, which would move Suggs to DE. He could even play MLB for us next to Ray. I think down the road, he will be the 2nd best LB coming out of this draft.

Yes

Suggs gives me the impressive when you watch him on film thast he wants to take downs off and I’m not so sure that Suggs would enjoy playing the three technique. Am I wrong about this?

We’re sharing a brain about this kid Weatherspoon. I’m telling you someone is going to get a star in Weatherspoon. You’re right, he can be plugged in anywhere in the LB corps right away be an impact player from day one. If this kid’s on the board when the Ravens pick, I don’t see how Ozzie is going to pass him up! Who’s the top LB on your board McClain?

by Ravens One on Mar 10, 2010 11:51 AM EST up reply actions

Exactly, after his combine and how good he looked there, I cannot imagine Ozzie not having this guy in his top 25. Like you said above, the guy understands the game very well, is versatile, a great, funny character, and also a damn good player. We like guys who can play multiple positions and I would much, much rather have Weatherspoon over Spikes. He is a perfect Raven.

And yes, McClain is top on my board. As good as Weatherspoon is, McClain is a freaking monster. He is so fast for someone who is 6’4". Reminds me alot of Keith Bullock from the Titans.

I have to admit

I have not watched a ton of McClain at Alabama. So I’m not as qualified as others may be to discuss McClain. I’ll have to defer to you and others. The Bullock comparison is interesting. If he has Bullock’s range laterally and can drop into coverage in a Tampa 2 scheme the way ILB’s are required to in the sub-packages, then we have no chance at him. He sounds like a top 15 guy.

Yea I wouldn’t be suprised if he goes top 10.

Don't bring that game back up.

That was painful as a UT fan. Though it gave us a glimpse of the hometown hero that picks up after Colt next year… didn’t do too too bad for a true fresh coming off the bench in the biggest game of his life.

I'll tell you this much

If McCoy goes to an established team like the Vikings or 49ers, I think he is going to be a very, very good QB.

He looks like such a little kid

I’ve been saying for two years that Oklahoma’s Sam Bradford is the best pro QB in the draft, had he came out last year. Sorry UT fans!

by Bruce Raffel on Mar 11, 2010 6:47 PM EST up reply actions

Agreed

McCoy looks frail physically. I have questions about whether he can hold up. Not to mention some questionable arm strength.

by Ravens One on Mar 11, 2010 7:04 PM EST up reply actions

Not at all.

I’ve seen both of them pretty up close and McCoy has way more muscle on him that Bradford.

Also, McCoy is a scrambling QB… two years ago he lead his team in rushing yards. He absorbs big hits and pops back up. The only 2 times Bradford has gotten hit he got helped off the field because his poor shoulder hurt.

by ATXRaven on Mar 12, 2010 4:40 PM EST up reply actions

Bradford is a bum and I can’t wait to see him perish away on the Redskins or Browns.

I say he goes to Rams

who need to start over and what better place than QB this year. I still say Detroit should have gone for an o-lineman with the first pick of last year’s draft and then they could have gotten Bradford this season.

by Bruce Raffel on Mar 12, 2010 8:57 AM EST up reply actions

Interesting

The Rams are in a quandry. They need a franchise guy at QB and yet have more holes than swiss cheese. Both McCoy and Sue WILL be impact players. I’m with MaLor on Bradford. His success at the next level is not a sure thing in my mind.

I would still take Jimmy Pickles over any of them.

He is a cocky little bastard that reminds me of Tom Brady on and off the field. Talented as hell and gets under your skin.

Surprisingly, NFL.com's most recent Mock Draft

has the Ravens taking FSU CB Patrick Robinson and the saints taking Florida DE Carlos Dunlap, who MaLoR just mentioned above. I want to see us get the best pass rusher unless someone like Joe Haden or Kyle Wilson falls to us. I’m not as high on Gresham due to his injury but also due to the deep TE draft class. However, he would be astud here for years if we did get him. It all depends on what other moves we make in free agency. Watch the news on that and if we sign a CB in FA, then drop that position, but otherwise, go get me a DE, Hans!

done and done - THANKS, Bruce!

Kyle Wilson

I do not think it is smart to draft a CB in the 1st round. The picks are just as likely to pan out in the 2nd and 3rd rounds as in the late first 1st round. Look at the best CB’s out there, and what rounds they were drafted in. even at the top of the draft, its not close to a sure thing….
