Ravens Should Sign Derrick Mason

I know we all are happy with the ravens new signing of Anquan Boldin which Is a great pick up by the ravens, but some people believe since we finally have that superstar wide receiver we should forget the superstar  wide receiver we already have in Derrick Mason. I believe that the Ravens should still sign Derrick Mason for altleast another two years he has been the main man on our offense and he can help the offense grow with his knowledge by helping young talented wideouts we already have or about to get and also he gives us a more better way to get to the super bowl; I know people are saying he getting older and he old but do he play like he old?  most of the oldschool players out perform the newschool players for example Darren Sharper, Brett Favre, Ray lewis,Thomas Jones  and etc.

The opinions posted here are those of the administrator of this blog and his loyal readers. They are in no way official comments from the team, and should not be misconstued as such, even though he thinks he could do just as well or even a better job!

I don't think you will find many that think we should let him go.

We have all been clamoring for Mason to be the number 2 because he is perfect for it so I doubt the sentiment has changed drastically in the past week.

of course we want mason back

he’s been nothing but good to us from the day he got here.

The Ravens SHOULD re-sign Mase. With AB, Stallworth and Mase in the lineup…Who do you cover? Boldin opens the short passing game for Rice and Heap plus he runs through arm tackles, Mason can catch anything thrown to him, Stallworth has a lot to prove to the NFL, so that makes him hungry AND dangerous. I like the moves so far and one of the better ones will be to re-sign Mason.

This of course is just my opinion.

Is is time for Football?

Sign someone

I have been clamoring on another post that T.O. is a better fit next to Boldin than Mason, but that is just a side point. We need to sign someone next to Boldin in order for our WR corp to be considered significantly improved short term (obviously, having Boldin long-term significantly improves our long-term prospects).

If our roster just went like this
2009 2010
Mason>Boldin
Clayton>Clayton
Washington>Stallworth
Williams>Whoever

I think everyone can agree that this is not such a big improvement from 2009 to 2010 (unless we add a good TE in the draft or FA)

But if we do this:
2009 2010
Mason>Boldin
Clayton>Mason (or other veteran WR)
Washington>Stallworth
Williams>Clayton

Plus Marcus Smith returning, that is a large upgrade. Also, I assume Ozzie will prob take a WR in the mid to later rounds to develop over the next 1-2 years til Mason retires, either for the end of the bench or the practice squad. Unless he still has hope that Harper is that guy.

I don’t think we really need T.O i mean he is a great player but you have to consider we still have speedy player ourselves like donte stallworth justin harper, macus smith and earon riley and demetrius williams and mark clayton if we keep them

Pointing out the transition we have made in WR? Sorry, just woke up from a killer nap.

Read my "Introducing Boldin" story where

Ozzie’s response to that question made me think it is not happening unless Mason accepts our offer of less money and one year. Also, I’m concerned that Mason will want more balls thrown his way and get in the way of the bond forming between Joe and Anquan, who needs to be the go-to guy from now on!

yeah i saw that

brief statement and didn’t look good

As far as I know..

Not many have expressed much interest in Mason up until now. Newsome did make it seem like he was too urgent about offering Derrick a new contract, but I still think he’ll eventually back to us.

only at the right price

and right contract length.

This situation reminds me of Ray’s contract last year. Ozzie let him test the market too. Once the other teams realized the numbers he wanted, they sent him back to Baltimore. Ray last year and Mason this year wanted/want to be paid based on past performance, and while the organization and the fans surely appreciate what they’ve meant to the team, it is only realistic to be paid based on projected future performance only. It’s not an insult to the players. It’s only fair and logical.

On the radio

they were saying how it sounds like they told Mase the same thing they told Ray last offseason; here is our offer, go on the open market and see if you can beat it. If you can’t, come back on our terms….

bq.Even after signing Donte Stallworth and trading for Anquan Boldin, the Ravens still are attempting to re-sign free-agent WR Derrick Mason.

by mlb32001 on Mar 9, 2010 4:03 PM EST reply actions

Right term of contract length

right price. D-Mase wants 2 years, big bucks, we’ll offer one plus our option, average bucks for a 36 year old receiver who will get the best offer from us.

Running out of balls to go around. Rice and Boldin will suck up a lot of catches. Heap may see 1 ball every 2 games. Boldin actually plays a better TE than Heap.

by raven on Mar 9, 2010 8:46 PM EST reply actions

raven

We don’t need Rice catching 60+ balls a year, he should only be thrown to when everyone else is covered or he has the most room to run after the catch….

by Rayisyourdaddy on Mar 10, 2010 4:35 PM EST reply actions

i agree but…we shall see if Flacco can resisit the urge to dump.

by raven on Mar 10, 2010 8:02 PM EST reply actions

If Boldin gets 1000 yards

and Mason 800 and Rice 500, that’s 2300 yards not including Stallworth, Clayton, Heap and anyone else. Combined that should put Flacco between 3500-4000+ yards. Now if only he can get about 100 more total in the Red Zone over the course of the season! Had he done that last year, those extra 100 Red Zone yards would have translated into probably four more TD’s and 2-3 more wins and an AFC North title in 2009.
