Given the chance should the Ravens pick up a backup QB in free agency?
With the recent release of QB Jake Delhomme from the Carolina Panthers, it is an excellent time for the Ravens to consider deepening their QB bench by signing him off of Free Agency. Delhomme has shown that when he is a protected QB he is accurate and is capable of putting up both points and yards. Additionally, he is a well seasoned veteran that can provide wisdom from his NFL carrer that could be used to further mold QB Joe Flacco into a well rounded quarterback. Having been in the league under center so long he is also more tuned to reading the opponent's defense and may be able to train Flacco on reading defense cues and performing audibles. If the Ravens are able to sign him for a little over the league Veteran minimum then he would be more than adequate as a 2nd string QB for Baltimore. If you have a well seasoned QB as backup , then this would take some of the fears of a possible injury to Flacco, forcing us to put put in QB Troy Smith who, although capable, has less experience at the position. Ultimately this then allows Baltimore to shop QB Troy Smith to other teams as a starter, and trade to possibly fill the holes in our defense or TE position or even grab an additional 3rd or 4th round draft slot to address these needs.
The opinions posted here are those of the administrator of this blog and his loyal readers. They are in no way official comments from the team, and should not be misconstued as such, even though he thinks he could do just as well or even a better job!

Delhomme might go to Arizona or even Indy
Sorgi was released from what had been the best job in the NFL, other than the Colts’ punter position!
Whether or not Troy Smith remains shouldn’t change anything as John Beck is as good or better and a solid #2 QB with good relationship with Cam Cameron. Just bring in an undrafted rookie to have another arm to keep Joe and John fresh in Training Camp and pre season.

Yes
I was saying to a bunch of people as soon as he was released. If someone signs Troy, I think it would be a great move to get Delhomme here as our back-up. He could show Joe alot and that would only help. Then have a strong veteran if god forbid anything were to happen.
You have to hate losing more than you love winning.
No way
We don’t want him teaching Joe any of his bad interception throwing habits.

Word.
Joe has not picked up the habit of throwing 5 interceptions in a game. I woudl prefer to keep it that way.
Though I would kind of love the idea. My buddy is a huge Panthers fan and I won 50 bucks off of him last year when we bet who would have better stats (passing yards, completion percentage, TD, Int, and QB rating). That would be like the ‘cherry on top’ if he came in as Joe’s backup. I might never be able to let him live that one down.

Delhomme is washed up
I don’t know if you watched him play, but he has nothing left to contribute. John Beck is a superior QB to him. I am perfectly happy with Beck as our primary backup, so by all means move Troy Smith. And Joe is doing just fine without a mentor; if your gonna bring in a mentor, it should be someone decent, not delhomme who broke 15 int 4 out of the 6 years he was the starter.

I don't think so
I am working on it though. Plan to have it done quickly.
Did you really just switch from Cards to Ravens because of Boldin?
You have to hate losing more than you love winning.

Just change it a bit to
Ravensfan81, and I doubt anyone will think you mean the current Raven wearing #81, Marcus Smith, because something tells me that will change quickly.

I don't consider it bandwagon
until the season/preseason starts. If you jump on this early, I will grant you a reprieve on the bandwagon status… just tell them Sean said it is ok. I like the name Cardsfan81… it shows that we have more appeal than MD and MD transplants… he can have a second favorite team now.
No (it's not about Anquan)
I was wondering when someone was going to ask this question. This has been brewing more 5 years at the very least. I have been following the Cardinals for over 30 years and watched the Bidwills screw (want to use a word than ryhmes with suck) the fans, players, sponsors etc. Supported them up-close and from a far for all these years.
There comes a time when you get tired of feeling like the roller coaster ride will never come to an end. The current exodus of good player like Dansby, Rolle and Boldin and all because of money is a clear indication that the Cardinals really have NOT turn the corner organizationally.
All the players that recently left have stated that thay no longer wanted to be there anymore (Dockett is probably the next guy out of there and has stated “if I get to the last year of my deal I will be playing for someone else”). Culturally they will always be the same ole Cardinals WITH piss poor management and owners in the Bidwills. It’s a divorce that I have come to know would be neccessary. The defection of the aformentioned players is so reminiscent of the mid 70’s under Coryell and 1999 with the Jake Plummer and Larry Centers led teams it’s scary. The Bidwills turned their backs on a playoff teams, slam their wallets shut, and the team didn’t recover and start to become respectable again until 2007 after that 1999 team was shot to shit.
From Air Coryell to Whisenhunt is a long time……to follow a futile franchise. It is said that if you love something you can let it go….. well love don’t live here anymore for the Arizona Cardinals. The current debacle helped but my mind had been made upto sever ties two months ago.
Management is important
but the owner is key. Bidwell was a horror when there was a chance he would move a team to Baltimore way back when. We already had experienced Irsay and Bidwell looked similar. SO despite the good players and coaches there, it all comes down to ownership. Just ask Marvin Lewis and any coach from Washington!
aka 'Rexx'
I think the Browns (the owners of the Bungles, not the team)
may be even worse than Angelos. They are so close to being a great team… they already have a great defense until Mad Marvin Lewis… but they are too cheap and stupid to pull off a trade or FA signing to move forward. I will always love the episodes of Hard Knocks that showed the daughter of Mike Brown negotiating with Andre Smith’s agent. She juse came out looking overmatched and a fitting example of why long term success has eluded that team. If they don’t extend ML that team will implode in three seconds and go back to 15 more years of paper bag hat wearing futility.

Yes
If you go back and read some of my post about the Ravens over the last two months you’ll see your question answered. Mr. Modell, current owner Mr. Bisciotti, HOF player and great GM Ozzie Newsome all are held in high regard along with Coach Harbaugh.
Flacco I like more of than some that have been here long before me. Rice is a stud and McGahee may be the best back-up running back in pro football, the OL is pretty damn good and so on. Yes I have been an undercover Ravens fan since before the Billick years. I live in Maryland and have watch the Ravens on Sunday Ticket .
Remember James Roe, the Norfolk St. WR. My wife went to Norfolk St. and I followed Roe at State and during his brief Ravens career. The Ravens are the AFC team I rooted for and the Cardinals WERE the NFC club. So you forced it out of me. I guess I have an affinity for Birds.
Side note: Bruce I sent you an e-mail on the change I’m seeking.
Well since you live in MD, you are alright by me. I do not like bandwagon fans who all of a sudden like a team because they are winning, and I especially hate fake fans from other states. IE the entire Steeler fan base.
You have to hate losing more than you love winning.

Hey, I can relate
I have been an Oriole fan for all of my 25 years on this earth. It is really taxing. They won the World Series the year before I was born, so it might as well have never happened as far as my emotions go. I have only known two good years in 25 (96 and 97)… if going to games wasn’t so much a part of my childhood I would have jumped ship by now too, but sadly I will always root for the O’s. While in TX I did adopt the Longhorns as a secondary team so I at least got to see some better baseball than what I normally catch at OPACY.
He just likes Birds...
And feels we are better than the Seahawks (duh), Atlanta (yes) and Eagles (debatable).

Not at LB,
safety, RB, or o-line. Can’t back that up, and it always depends on “which” McNabb shows up, hopefully the one we played last time!

couldnt agree more, so washed up
i think most qb’s in the league are superior to delhomme. expect delhomme to get picked up by a team the same way vinny testaverde was getting picked up at the very end of his career.
i disagree
i dont even think he’s capable anymore rexx. did you ever see that conversation of him and steve smith on the bench early last year? i think he has lost the mental aspect of it man
