Ravens Looking at Texans' WR Kevin Walter?
According to Mike Florio over at ProFootballTalk.com, while the Baltimore Ravens are still interested in possibly signing Terrell Owens, "Plan A' is to take a shot at either Anquan Boldin or a new name that has came up, former Houston Texans WR Kevin Walter.
Walter, playing alongside All Pro Andre Johnson in Houston, had 53 receptions in 2009 for 611 yards and two TD's. While Walter may be an upgrade at the #2 position, he certainly isn't the #1 big name that most Ravens fans are looking for.

Walter not the answer
He didn’t look like the same player coming back from injury this year. Who knows though, maybe he’ll be fully healed for next year.
I’m hoping he we take a hard look at Antonio Bryant. If he can be signed for about 5 mil / year, like Tiger used to say, “just do it!”
Forget Bryant...
He had a great year during his contract year, but then did nothing when he was tagged last year. I know he had QB issues, but still. Kevin Walter isn’t going to wow you if we sign him, but I hope we do. He is like a white Hines Ward without all the douchiness. For a running division his blocking would be really valuable. He is no Wes Welker, but imagine a 6’3" WR in the slot who can block with Rice’s shiftiness… it’s the closest thing to a guarantee Rice makes it to the next level every play.
To be fair… Tiger used to say “two in the pink, one in the stink” too but…
We already had Kelley Washington in the slot
and he’s the same mold as you’re describing (6’3, can block, not a game breaker but moves the chains).
(ATX you weren’t saying Walter has Rice’s or Welker’s shiftyness right? You were just talking about his blocking skills right?)
Yes
I meant he is a killer blocker compared to anyone or our team… save for maybe Marcus Smith (and that’s if he can come back healthy)… not at all that he can shift like Rice… just meant him blocking from the slot with Rice catching a screen or taking a pitch or something like that.
Exactly though, not a game breaker but a nice receiveer who knows how to use his body to both block and get separation.
This upsets me
It is really sad, pathetic and pitiful that we are really looking at this as our best option right now. The fact that the Ravens will not be bidding on Marshall could possibly be the worst decision in league history. I am getting the terrible feeling that Ozzie is going to fill this offense with a bunch of career #2-3 WR just because they are high character guys.
I really do not get what the problem with Marshall is. Did he throw a little hissy fit in practice? Yea he did, but look at why he did it. Putting up over 300+ catches and 3,300+ yards over 3 seasons and the team has nothing to show for it with a playoff birth. McDaniels ships off Marshall’s QB who he was comfortable with and brings in Orton Hears a Who. Then, Marshall makes a statement about wanting a new contract, and Denver basically says no way and comes up with some stupid excuse why he does not deserve one. LOOK AT HIS STATS AND LOOK WHERE YOUR TEAM IS! The man was playing his heart out for you with basically a rookie contract and they were too cheap to give him what he wanted.
Ozzie, I am truly, truly upset that you are stating we are not even going to make a bid for this guy. It is a blessing that someone like Marshall is sitting right there for a first round pick. Give up your god damn pick. Marshall is better than any of those guys you love in the draft. I really think that Harbaugh and Ozzie just LOVE projects and love guys who they can teach. They seem intimidated by a guy who dominates in the league because they are afraid he will do things “his way.” Well, if the guy is going to give us 100 catches, 1,100 yards and 6-8 TDs, than let him do it his way!
Jesus Ozzie, if you screw this up and we come into next season without a WR that clearly stands out as a #1, I am thinking about changing fan bases. The Jets are looking like they have the balls to make it over the hump. Hmmmm

Couldn't have put it better myself
One flippin 1st round pick Oz…..ONE! There’s no guarantee that anyone drafted in the 1st round is going to make an impact their first year. Whereas Marshall could step in, be our #1, give Flacco that big time receiver that he needs to mature to the next level, and take away that double-team on Mason that always made him disappear from a game. Its a no brainer! Arggh!

I think a huge concern is his penchant for beating the shit out of women
He has had like ten run ins with his girlfriend since in the league… but only a handful of charges that always seem to get dropped at the last second. Before you knew him as the dominant player, you knew him as the dumbass who couldn’t stay out of the headlines for beating his GF.
Not saying avoid him like the plague but something to consider when there are other options. If you can get Anquan for a 3rd and only the baggage of missing three games a year and a contract, it may balance out Marshall with his 1st round price, new contract (probably bigger than Boldin’s), his liability in the locker room (if one more person claims that just because Ray Lewis is in the locker room he will control a player, I will freak out!), a liability off the field, in the media, his mystery hamstring injury, etc… just something to consider and make you think.
Though I obviously do not argue his talent, that is second to almost none and would obviously rape defenses on the field on sundays.
Suggs, just poured chloroform on his woman. Why is he still with us?
You have to hate losing more than you love winning.
Stallworth freakin KILLED a guy while driving drunk!
And we’re worried about a guy who shook a girlfriend or two?

Exactly. The entire world knows that this team needs a new #1. And if Ozzie signs Kevin Walter, what does that say about what we have done? We would have brought in 2 guys who have never been better than a #2 in their entire careers. People can say Walter’s stats were pretty decent, but Stephen Hawkins could look good next to Andre Johnson.
You have to hate losing more than you love winning.
No one is making the arguement that his is going to be signed to be a number 1
You are arguing against yourself on that one. Notice I even mentioned him blocking from the slot, because I want to resign Mason and get a number one.
I understand this
But if by the end of the week, and no one is here but Walter, what moves has Ozzie made to get a #1? Sure, we could take a guy in the first round of the draft, but that does not make him a #1.
I just woke up on the wrong side of the bed today. Then I read Jets might want to get Marshall and I almost soiled myself.
You have to hate losing more than you love winning.
If they do
good luck getting back under the cap when it is reinstituted next season. The owners say they can’t survive the current deal, then they can’t afford to lock out the players and miss out on hundreds of millions of dollars in income either.
I'm upset that we can't get a #1 either
But remember how bad we were when we were among the top offenses in the league in the mid 90’s.
Houston can’t even make the playoffs and have only one winning season even with the best WR in the game. WR isn’t the only thing. If we get Marshall and he gets suspended and then mis drafting Dunlap, you are going to shit your pants and say Ozzie failed too.
But remember how bad we were when we were among the top offenses in the league in the mid 90’s.
Yea, but this aint the 90’s anymore bud. This team has every single piece to win a Superbowl except the WR. Everything is there. Ozzie has built this team to near perfection, except for WR. We are 1-2 players away from our 2nd ring. And both those players need to be WR.
You have to hate losing more than you love winning.
That's a fair point
Just don’t be upset when we can’t rush the passer again next year… or if we don’t have a replacement for Ray Ray… or lack depth and fall apart in two years because we pulled the big move but not the little moves.
I agree though, all great teams have a monster tandem of QB/WR, but someone has to try to balance out the fan fervor for only the big signings.
Oh I won't be
Because I think we can still find a replacement for Ray, we have people who can rush the passer really well but didn’t step up last year (suggs). It’s not like we are giving up alot to get this guy. A first rounder. That’s gives the rest of the entire draft to get depth, which will happens.
And honestly, I would sacrifice other positions we have been dominant in to revamp this WR group. A great defense and strong running game does not seem to win Superbowls anymore like it did when we won. You need to be able to launch it today, and we can not do that.
You have to hate losing more than you love winning.
I want to be the team that power runs the ball.
But can strike deep and often when necessary. So the Jets, if they land Marshall. Crap.
You worry about the repeat offender part silly, not the moral issue
I could give less of a shit if he is a good person if he performs like a star. Borderline players and the like need to be choir boys, but not a start WR.
One more suspension for something like that and its a whole season down the drain for him. THATS what I care about.
I Agree 100%
Brandon Marshall will put us over the top then you can add pieces to the offense,Ozzie shouldn’t outsmart himself on this one afterall the great 1st round picks he made were the obvious for the position in the draft Ogden,Lewis,Heap,Reed,Ngata,Suggs if you want to bring young players along, get them in the later rounds and develop them.At 25 yrs old and a true top WR waiting for us to pull the trigger and we have our finger thus far up our butt. The defense might be a year away from having to be rebuilt, then what? Make the deal for Marshall and building the defense will be easy, because we’ll be scoring 35 pts. a game…its deal and a steal…
"Rec"
everything except the possible jump ship part (I’m guessing you’re joking anyway about it Malor)
I do not know
I really don’t. Why should I continue to root for this team if Ozzie is not going to take the necessary steps to make us a Superbowl contender? Until I see what I and we all want happen, than maybe I’ll stop being as ignorant towards this situation. But it is looking to go on for the 2nd year straight.
You have to hate losing more than you love winning.
It's day one of the new off season,
wait until after the draft to judge Ozzie on what he’s doing with the WR core. He really messed up last year and he’s got to know that (Bischotti has to be in his ear, like he was with getting a franchise QB).
I heard all we don’t want to do is give up our first round pick. We can still trade for Marshall by giving up a second rounder and a player (McGahee? Heap?).
No idea. It was just a heart breaker reading Peter King say we are not going for Marshall. Really, really hurt.
You have to hate losing more than you love winning.
MaLoR, you flip flop your position on the Ravens more than Glen Beck on politics
Is it Bipolar or too much coffee? Easy big fella, easy. I know it is frustrating, I have been a fan as long as you, I went to the first ever game against the Raiders in 96. Your heart will explode with excitement swinging from extreme positive to negative comments combined with the chance UMD wins the ACC.
Haha
Yea, I get that alot. I’ll be happy with Boldin. If Boldin or Marshall are not here, I will continue to be upset.
You have to hate losing more than you love winning.
That's fair
As long as you don’t turn into one of these Marshall or nothing guys. I read one guy suggesting we pull a Ditka and trade our whole draft for one player ala Ricky Williams.
Yea, but the only thing is that we do not need to do that. Just a first round pick. That. Is. It!
You have to hate losing more than you love winning.
I agree, I would pull the trigger. But the 40 million dollar contract that he has to sign is a big one too and may limit other signings. Personally I do it, I just understand the reservations.
Marshall, Boldin, or Jackson. Hell, I’d even settle for Owens.

TO... maybe,
He normally behaves for one year, so as long as we still draft a WR in the first two rounds I am cool with TO.
Jackson, I would love to have, but not at a 1st and 3rd. We can offer SD less, but I doubt they take it.
Marshall?
So you all have a guy who douses his GF in chloroform, a drunken manslaughterer, and now you want a girlfriend beater?
Wait, did I make a wrong turn and end up on the Bengals board?

Speaking of the chloroform incident....
Did Suggs ever explain why he did that? That’s something you have to pre-meditate, that’s not heat of the moment stuff like Marshall did to his GF.
The only explanation I can come up this is he wanted to get freaky with her in bed and she wouldn’t let him.
Here’s how it went down (in my head)
Suggs: Tiger said this is the shit baby. All his girls rave about it.
GF: Well you’re no Tiger Woods in bed.
Suggs: You M’F’er!!!
/Suggs gets out the rag with chloroform
Both horrible to pour on someone

Just got a report that Landry is looking into Seatle.
You have to hate losing more than you love winning.
Ditto on Marshall.
Seatle has 2 first round picks and might give one up for Marshall. He’s visiting them tomorrow. You can jump off that bridge now Malor.
Marshall would have to choose to go to a bottom feeder in the NFC West than.
If he chooses there, you have to know that he isn’t about winning at all. No line, no rb, oft injured qb, little defense…
Hard to imagine they would sign him though with how much money they already owe Deion Branch and TJ Housh though… then you have to sign BMarsh for 40 million on top of that? That’s crazy money.
Na, won't jump
Kevin Walter > Brandon Mashall obviously. A 30 year old injury prone Boldin > Marshall. TO and Mason combing for 72 years on this earth > Marshall. Keeping faith with Clayton, Washington and now Stallworth > Marshall.
I am totally happy right now. It’s 50 degrees and Sunny out and Friday. Life is great. Ozzie makes me smile all day. Thanks you dark, chocolatety ball of love Mr Newsome.
You have to hate losing more than you love winning.
Look… I agree with the Ravens about Marshall. He’s just too risky. Sure, what he’s done off the field isn’t as bad as Stallworth, but Stallworth has paid his price and (apparently) learned his lesson.
The problem with Marshall is that the Ravens would need to give a first rounder and a huge salary before Marshall catches one pass. That’s a huge risk when you don’t know how long he’s going to play before he gets suspended or mad at the coaches. Is he worth it talent-wise? ABSOLUTELY! However, the damage that he could to the entire team (like TO in Philly) isn’t worth it.
That being said… I’m a huge Kevin Walter fan. He’s an extremely underrated WR. He’s not a number one guy, but I think that the Ravens are loving some of the recdievers in the draft. If I had to guess, I’d say that they draft a guy in the second round… maybe Arrelious Benn or Damian Williams.

Walter w/ boldin will be like Andre Johnson with Walter. Flacco is hosting a huge party tonight at his place. Everyone’s invited!!!!
aka 'Rexx'
Eww.....I would get Terrell Owens locked up first before signing Kevin Walter.
Owens has a better track record. Kevin Walter does nothing me. At all. Owens would be on a one year deal. Dole out the scratch for players like Brandon Marshall.
Speaking of which, the Ravens should go trade for Brandon Marshall. The conservative approach is a tired act. Marshall is worth the gamble. Bring the baggage and the production. I’ll take the excellent with the ugly. Marshall has only a 1st round tender while Miles Austin, Vincent Jackson, and Malcolm Floyd all have a 1st and 3rd round tenders.
There are some scrap heap players like Hank Baskett who are worth at least a look.
Get me some of that meat.....

The latest I've heard on the WR's is that..
I’ve heard that Oakland wants Boldin and Marshall has a meeting with the Seahawks tomorrow.
Something tells me were gonna end up with Mason, Stallworth and Walter as are three wide receivers next year.
Still better than Mason, Clayton, and Washington
Not what I want though. I want Mason to retire and us sign Walter and Boldin.
Oh Hell No!
I guess we can all look forward to another year of mediocrity.
