Why trade Jared Gaither?

If you, like me have been day dreaming about how nice of a trading chip Jared Gaither can be, think about this:

Who in the second round will make our team better than if we had Jared Gaither?

Star-divide

Let's not forget how much of a luxury it is to have Oher and Gaither. An injury to a left tackle is devastating for most teams but the Ravens have backup.

The other thing is, if they trade Gaither and slide Oher over to LT than our right tackle suddenly becomes a need. What are we going to do, trade a tackle and then draft another? The Ravens already have Gaither in a contract that is very favorable to the team, so why trade to pay a higher draft pick more money?

The opinions posted here are those of the administrator of this blog and his loyal readers. They are in no way official comments from the team, and should not be misconstued as such, even though he thinks he could do just as well or even a better job!

on the one hand you have a point

that there is probably not a guy we’re gonna get in the 2nd if we dump gaither who will make us better

on the other hand, we don’t have many draft picks, and having a 1st and two 2nd rounders would probably make up for gaither in a year or two. And after this year we’re going to have to pay Gaither for REAL, who is still on his supplemental draft rookie contract and has Rosenhaus as an agent. So if we think we’re going to have trouble keeping him anyway, better to get a 2nd rounder than a compensatory pick, and it also might pan out to be a profit anyway knowing our recent history with first-day draft picks.

I can’t say one way or the other what the right thing to do is. All i can say is that whatever Ozzie does will have been the right thing to do.

Would love to keep Oher and Gaither together for a long time. Only problem is that it is most likely not possible financially. Like jackmca said above, he is going to demand some big time money next year and with the Ravens having to give Ngata a new contract next year, there is no way we can afford both. And everyone agrees that Ngata is more important than Gaither.

So why not get something out of him now instead of getting nothing but a 4th or 5th round compensatory pick when a team is offering us a 1st or 2nd and 3rd round pick this year? Just seems like the right move for this franchise. We are not going to pay Gaither Left Tackle money to be a RT for us.

As far as replacing him, yes it will leave somewhat of a hole for us to fill. Gaither is a solid Tackle who has not even hit his prime yet. But surprisingly enough, RT is one of the easier positions to fill in the league. I would expect Ozzie to either make a move in free agency or with a player already on the team, much like what we did with Willie Anderson 2 years ago. Bring in a veteran for the short term while we breed a new RT.

In terms of contracts

Whatever a new CBA looks like changes that. But if there’s no cap, there’s no way to guess how the ravens front office will respond.

by ello on Mar 30, 2010 12:43 AM EDT up reply actions

As far as the finances go… if the Ravens sign him this off-season to a long term contract, I believe that it would be financially possible. There aren’t many comparable contracts, so it’s hard to estimate exactly how much the Ravens would be looking at. However, players with only two years starting experience and no pro bowls or accolades don’t usually get huge contracts.

People may try to reference Jason Brown’s contract, 5 years for $38 million or $7.6 million per season, but I cannot see Gaither getting THAT kind of money. I would estimate Gaither’s potential pay at around $5 per year. That sounds like alot, but for a starter of Gaither’s quality, it’s actually very cheap.

I believe in signing players with high upside to long contract extensions. Look at what happened with Boldin in Arizona. The Cardinals knew that his best years were ahead of him and signed him to a long contract. Several seasons later, they had Boldin, one of the premier receivers in the league, locked into a cheap deal because they had the foresight to give him an extension while his stock was at its lowest. It tend to think that’s how the great teams stay great. The Steelers, Patriots and the Colts are notorious for retaining their young, drafted talent.

by BAL_Hawk on Mar 30, 2010 9:26 AM EDT up reply actions

Hello? It's Drew Rosenhaus!

He’ll definitely get that big contract, larger than any center and in th neighborhood of $6-7/year plus a $10M bonus. Ravens will not bow to that, NFW. Buh-bye either this year or next. Keep him for this year if we don’t get a better offer and groom Oher for the transition more in 2010 and someone else at RT, as you just know Gaither will miss a few games as has been the trend.

Right on Bruce. I am on the same page with you. Weasel Rosenhaus will find a way for Gaither to get an overpriced contract.

You have to hate losing more than you love winning.

by Mr MaLoR on Mar 30, 2010 3:32 PM EDT up reply actions

And if that Happens...

Errr, I mean when it happens (w/ Rosenhaus), then it is somebody else’s cap number (that is if there is a cap in 2011).

Are Bart Scott (ave. $8M/yr) and Jason Brown (ave. $7.5M/yr) worth those salaries? Scott maybe; Brown not so sure about -but those are other peoples problems. $15.5M a year could easily get three solid contributors.

MaLoR, I think you made a comment elsewhere that with Gaither it is a “win-win” -absolutetly! Isn’t it nice to be discussing our offensive tackle situation within the framework of a SuperBowl run versus discussing, say, lack of QB, defense, receivers; or how the new head coach is finally “the one”; or why are our offensive players are such knuckleheads off the field -such as what is probably being discussed at other sites?

by vlad755 on Mar 30, 2010 3:53 PM EDT up reply actions

Exactly

We are talking about something that is not even a problem, buy actually a positive for this team. If anyone wants Gaither to be a Raven for life, it is me. Can’t give up on the Terps, but I would rather not jeopodize the signing of other key guys here like Ngata and even Joe because Gaither is asking for more than he is worth, which we are still unsure of what that contract would be. I just think it is smart to get something out of him now and bring in a veteran for the short term.

But if we can’t get anything done, then we get to keep him for another year, which I have no problem with at all. And when we win it all next year, maybe that will bring his asking price down to stay with a championship ball club.

This whole situation is a good one to have.

You have to hate losing more than you love winning.

by Mr MaLoR on Mar 30, 2010 4:08 PM EDT up reply actions

And about the other successful teams and their sites.

You can just tell how well run our team is. The Eagles are about to let go of their star QB. Dallas has questions about their coaching. Pittsburgh is discussing possible jail time for two of their most important players

What are the Ravens discussing? Whether Ngata can play DE and how Gaither staying or going is good either way.

Wade is a fine coach. People question him because it’s big D and that’s just how it goes. But Phillips has him team playing well and I think Dallas is going to be quite nasty next year. I’d say they’re definitely the favorite in the NFC East.

by Bruce Raffel on Apr 5, 2010 10:23 PM EDT up reply actions

I’m not so sure.

I think that the MOST he could average would be $7 million per year. That’s what the Niners gave to Joe Staley before last season, and I think that’s a comparable contract. Before last season, Staley had two years starting experience too. However, Staley was a first round pick, so it’s possible that leveraged him into a little more money than Gaither can expect.

All in all, I don’t think that seven million per year is that much in comparison to the player that Gaither could become. That’s the only question in my mind… Will Gaither continue to improve or has he already reached most of his potential? If he has high upside (and I think that he does), than it makes alot of sense to resign him long-term.

by BAL_Hawk on Mar 30, 2010 5:04 PM EDT up reply actions

$7M a Year?

That is a bargain for Gaither -if we can get him for that price, I say sign him for like twelve years…!

He just had his 24th birthday so he is still very young. And I know he has Rosenhaus, but let us not forget he is a Maryland boy (went to high school in MD, attended U of MD) so Ravens might be able to play that angle also.

The only caveat to that is that Snyder could swoop in and throw like $10M a year with a $10M signing bonus for eight years or something stupid like that… deadskins desperate for offensive line help and Gaither would be the starting LT on Day 1… and Raljon is pretty close to home for Gaither…

by vlad755 on Mar 31, 2010 10:42 AM EDT up reply actions

True.

The ONLY factor that would drive Gaither’s price up is the demand from other teams, but the Ravens can still block other teams next season with the franchise tag. Gaither could hold out and make the Ravens tag him, but why would he honestly do that if the Raven’s offer is reasonable? It’s not like the Ravens are a bad team. They are most certainly contenders, to which Gaither even alluded…

"It would be my dream to stay with the Ravens and stay with the team, winning multiple championships," Gaither said. "I’d be more than happy to remain here."

Most of this Gaither trade talk is being fueled by the media. They have nothing else to talk about… and neither do we. The truth is that the Ravens probably would mind an extra first round pick, but aren’t going to settle for any offer. They like Gaither but want him to work harder.

That’s another angle to view this from. Why would Harbaugh allude to Gaither’s poor work ethic if they were really actively shopping Gaither and bent on trading him? It doesn’t make sense. To the Ravens, Gaither is probably no different than any of their other restricted free agents. If another team gives an offer sheet to any player with a tender, the Ravens would surely let them go unless the contract was ridiculously low. In my opinion, it’s the same deal with Gaither. They’d be happy to let him go for a first rounder… the same can probably be said of Fabian Washington and LeRon McClain, who where both give first round tenders as well.

$7 might be cheap for a LT, but...

…when you take the $10 million signing bonus and then figure Oher will be a LT in ayear or two, if not sooner, then all of a sudden, $7M for what will soon end up being a RT is way, way too much.

aka 'Rexx'

by Bruce Raffel on Apr 1, 2010 8:23 AM EDT up reply actions

Maybe… That’ll be up to the Ravens, but it’s nice to have a RT who can play LT, like Oher did last season.

by BAL_Hawk on Apr 1, 2010 9:13 AM EDT up reply actions

Well it would be great to keep gaither but he will want the big bucks and want them soon. I’d rather pay many other ravens that deserve the money than gaither. I do like him but he is very replaceable as offensive lineman come and go all the time. Oher on the other hand needs to stay at all costs he is a BEAST! Well this is my first comment on here but i have been a ravens fan since they arrived in Bmore. I live in cali so i don’t get too see many games :( anyways Ravens 4 life!

by Dawhyteguy30 on Mar 30, 2010 3:34 AM EDT reply actions

Welcome Whitey…. funny screen name.

I don’t know how replaceable he is. If teams are going to give up a high second round pick for him, he’s got some serious value. If Oher goes down for the season, who plays LT?

We need to sign him long term. That guarentees we have two great tackles for at least four more years. He won’t cost that much because teams have him rated around the 10th to 15th best LT. Also, if we front load his contract (for this uncapped year), in the future, the cap hit won’t be that bad.

Biscotti, pay that man his money….

by BmoreBlitz on Mar 30, 2010 8:08 AM EDT up reply actions

Unfirtunately, his agent is Drew Rosenhaus,..

…who rates Gaither among the best in the NFL, andtherefore wants #1 LT money for him, cash that will either go to Gaither or Ngata. That makes the decision a lot easier as Haloti is way more valuable to this team. The injury thing is a concern and you can never have too many top linemen, as injuries always occur. However, Gaither’s stock will never be higher. If we can get a first or high second, trade him, otherwise ride him as hard as we can to help the team.

aka 'Rexx'

by Bruce Raffel on Mar 30, 2010 8:47 AM EDT up reply actions

by Bruce Raffel on Mar 30, 2010 3:28 PM EDT up reply actions

Even Drew...

…knows Gaither is not a #1 or #1a LT. And who knows what the labor agreement will look like in 2011? If there is no cap, or an NBA-like cap structure, each agent is going to have the strategy of what the market will bear i.e. “how valuable is he to you and your organization, not that he is the ‘nth’ best player at his position and needs to fit into a cap structure…” (that was one of the good things about the past salary cap in that not only were rookies slotted, but even veterans were somewhat slotted -all parties going into a negotiation knew the general ballpark of where the contract should be; unless you are Dan Snyder, than anything goes…).

We all know that Drew is going to try to get as much money as possible for Gaither and if it is a ridiculous dollar figure, part friends, especially if we have a shiny new Lombardi to go with our four other NFL championships ( ’58, ’59, SuperBowl V and SuperBowl XXXV), even if we get very little in return. Who cares when you have a new Lombardi?

I would rather go into the season with bookend tackles and make a run at a SuperBowl and deal with the consequences of losing Gaither the following year getting little back than enter the season with a question mark at RT which would greatly imperil our chances at a SuperBowl for what: an additional first rounder that probably will not impact us that much this season and is no guarantee (Remember, Ogden played guard his rookie season, big deal, and did not have a true impact until his third season).

Right now, the Ravens have all the offensive pieces on paper. Maybe a small tweak here and there i.e. young TE, young C for depth, etc, but essentially this is as good as it is going to get on offense -now is the window of opportunity. Essentially, this is probably the last season for Mason, Lewis, Gregg, Pryce, Birk, potentially McGaHee and Reed (although Reed might stick around), but in theory if the Ravens win it all this year, I see the defense getting pretty much blown up. And if there is a hole on the offensive line (right tackle) also, so be it; it is a rebuilding year -take care of RT by rebuilding that also. Remember, there was a drop off in 2001 (from 12-4 to 10-6), the Ravens bottomed out in 2002 (7-9) and started upward again in 2003 (Back up to 10-6 and first division crown). I see no reason why that would not happen again, assuming we win the SuperBowl this season.

I would really like to see the Ravens go defensive in rds 1 and 2 in the draft and then fill out the rest of the defense, C and TE on Day 2 of the draft/rookie FA’s.

there’s no way we would find a player who would have the sudden impact, but with this being one of the most talented drafts in quite some time, we could find a future star. Like everyone is saying, financially it just does not make sense. Given how well ozzie drafts, i’m sure we will get someone who will be an eventual starter and impact player.

by AV23 on Mar 30, 2010 12:20 PM EDT reply actions

Of course we will most likely not find someone with as great of impact

But why not get a very high draft pick or 2 for him now instead of not being able to sign him at all after next season and get a 5th round compensatory pick? I rather get something now and take the risk on RT troubles by getting another CB, DE, TE with that pick.

There’s little chance he’s going to free agency next year. If we don’t trade him now, we’d be smart to move him to RT next year. The reason being, we only have to sign him top RT money after 2010. If he won’t sign, we can franchise or transition tag him at RT, and it’ll affect the cap a lot less.

he gets beaten way too easily because he’s slow. He blatantly holds, most hide ie well, everyone holds just not boldly and blatantly like Gaither. Sans Gaither we lose that flexibility and depth.

Gaither

Did anyone read Jamison Hensley’s chat on BSun.com? He thinks the Ravens are shopping Gaither because although he has a lot of upside, he isn’t a great fit for what we want out of our offensive line. I think we want more maulers. That is besides his crappy work ethic and desire for a massive contract.

I am torn on this issue. On the one hand I think it would be a good idea to keep him around for 2 more years until the core older players like Ray, Reed, Birk, Mason etc are gone and our current superbowl window is closed. We can either offer him a 2-3 year extension at fair money, and let him play that out, and then trade/let him walk. Or we could let him play this year out, franchise him for a year, and then trade/let him walk. I think sign him now to a fair 2-3 contract now, he will make a little more money this year than he would have otherwise, but overall we don’t need the headache of him looking for a big contract, and if he improves to be an elite player, he can get that contract at the ripe age of 27. If not, we let him go, since we will be rebuilding anyways. That is my stance.

On an unrelated note, I hope we get offers for Troy Smith and Clayton on draft day. Although Clayton has a high tender, I am sure he can be had for a late 3rd/early 4th round pick. If a team needs a #2/#3 WR, he would probably be a solid option for a team looking for a guy to contribute now. We are dealing from strength, and we don’t need him anymore…

I think Gaither fits our system perfectly

Not sure how a 6’9" 330 pounds athletic freak does not it our system. Does Hensley think we want slower an smaller Tackles? How is there a system for O-Lineman? I think Gaither fits on any team.

As far as Troy and Clayton, I think we will definfitely see one of those guys get traded during the draft, moat likely Troy. Some teams are going to miss out on McCoy, Pike, Tebow, Lefeavour and will make a move for Troy. As for Clayton, not so sure teams will give up anything more than a 4th for him. And if a team did offer a 4th or 5th, I would turn it down. Clayton as our #3/4 WR is great for us. He knows our system and is definitely serviceable. I think he is worth more than a 3rd round pick, which is why his tender is a 2nd

quotes
jamisonhensley: Peterman … Right now, I would say he is competing with Stallworth for the No. 3 job. But Clayton doesn’t have a spot locked up like previous years. The Ravens gave Clayton a second-round tender, which shouts out that they are willing to take offers for him. If a team offered a fourth-round pick in this year’s draft for Clayton, I could see the Ravens moving him.

Don’t really see much potential for Clayton as a returner. I know he did it in college, but he has never expressed any interest in doing it at the NFL level. He has always been an emergency option at returner for the Ravens.

Even if they can’t trade Clayton in the draft, it’s still not 100 percent that he makes the team. If the Ravens draft a WR in the first or second round, it would hurt Clayton’s chances of returning.

Malor, although Clayton knows our system well and is serviceable, I would rather have Stallworth on the field instead of him. Stallworth adds a dimension that Clayton doesn’t, and that is the downfield threat. That will open the middle of the field for Heap and Boldin, and the sidelines for Mason. We are better trading him for a late 3rd/ early 4th and using the pick on depth (maybe a backup C/OG who can suceed Birk eventually?) I agree that a 5th rounder is not worth it for us, but a 4th definitely is. Ozzie has great success in the 4th round drafting. It is his most succesful middle round by far.

jamisonhensley: Guest … I don’t think there are guys in the second round who would be better than Gaither right now. But the Ravens would move Oher to LT and would only need to find a RT, which is much easier than finding a LT. The Ravens, though, would try to find a RT who is a better fit with the team. They want an offensive lineman who is more their type of player. That’s why I think the Ravens would deal Gaither for a second-rounder.

He doesn’t really explain himself though by what he means “more their type of player.”

This is all speculation from a writer. There has been nothing official from the team.

duh

teams don’t tell you, “he is not our style of player, so we are going to trade him.” this whole site is speculation, but he does have alot more sources than us.

gaither is every team's type of player

he’s a physical freak with a ceiling as high as they come. find me a GM who think’s that’s not his “type of player” and I’ll find you his resume on Career Builder.

still, even though gaither is so obviously good, it makes sense to shop him and trade him if you can get the lion’s pick or higher. One: we can absorb the loss with Oher. Two: we’re short on picks and this year’s draft looks really good. Three: we probably won’t pay him what he wants when that time comes, so we might as well get something for him while he still works for us.

I am all for Stallworth as the #3. I never once said that I preferred Clayton over Stallworth because I am ready for change with Donte here. But Stallworth isn’t just goin to be given the job. It will
most likely be a 3 or even 4 player competition between stallworth, Clayton, and possibly a rookie or someone already on the team.

But having Clayton there as our #4 and a back up in case one of the top 3 go down is fine by me. And if we cam get a fair draft pick for him, I am all for that as well.

having clayton as a 4 gives us a VERY threatening WR corps.

You have a guy who makes a one-hander every now and then playing #4, that means you have options. But stallworth will beat him for the 3 spot just because he’s flat out better.

Regardless, we’ll probably see packages with Boldin at one, Stallworht at two, and Clayton in the slot with Mason taking a breather. So I think keeping Clayton makes sense unless you see Eron Riley or Marcus Smith making some incredible strides.

WR Depth

I’ll play Devil’s Advocate here for a moment: Let us say Stallworth beats out Clayton for the #3 spot. Special team responsibilities aside, Clayton as the #4 provides injury depth. The Ravens are going to experience injuries -every team does. And, we will not get sixteen games plus the playoffs out of Q -ain’t gonna happen (he has only played in 16 games in two out of his seven seasons). I am very comfortable going into the season with Q and Mason as #1 and #2, and if Clayton can beat Stallworth out for #3, great! Or, either Clayton or Stallworth starting as the #3 with the other being the #4/injury sub guy.

if clayton beats stallworth, i say “not great.” I want Stallworth to be good enough to DEMAND looks from flacco, and if Clayton is in the slot that means, in all likelihood, that nobody stepped up.

At the same time

if Clayton has a great camp and pre season and EARNS the #3 slot gig, then hat’s off to him, right!?

How about this?

Who is really going to be there at pick 25? What about trading our 25th to denver for marshall. Marshall and Boldin will demand more respect than any other WR tandem in the league. Mason is losing speed so let him and heap work the middle. Our 2nd round pick can go to the best defensive player available. Most likely corner, that is our biggest need and not really because im counting on Webb to be our other starting corner.

by Raven_all_day on Apr 4, 2010 10:59 AM EDT reply actions

It’d probably be to much money to trade for Marshall, but I like the idea.

by BmoreBlitz on Apr 4, 2010 12:37 PM EDT up reply actions

Can you imagine the whiplash

that Flacco would have swiveling to look at both Q and Marshall? He’d be dizzy and if he EVER checked down to Rice, I’d run on the field and scream in his face!

Mason in the slot, and Stallworth to really stretch the field on 3rd down. Our offense on paper would be unstopable. Alright I’m on board. Forget the money Bischotti, aren’t you a Billionaire anyway.

well they dont have to bring back clayton. also to make room they could send a player with the first rounder. aww man that move wud give us the best offseason ever. recieving core will go from worst to best in the league.
