Great article in Pittsburgh's paper

Ravens, fans likely enjoying Roethlisberger's mess

Tuesday, March 09, 2010 By Ron Cook, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

You know what they're saying about you in Baltimore, don't you?

"You people in Pittsburgh really have a lot of nerve calling us 'Baltimorons' ... "

They're right.

At least for now there no longer is any justification to make fun of the Ravens or their faithful fans, no matter how enjoyable the experience.

This goes back to Friday, a day that was celebrated in Baltimore just as much as the Fourth of July will be this summer. That was the day the Ravens traded for big-time wide receiver Anquan Boldin, instantly becoming the team to beat in the AFC North Division. It also was the day that news broke of another sexual assault allegation against Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger.

It's hard to say what made Ravens fans happier. I'm guessing the Roethlisberger mess.

Think how you would feel if, say, Washington Capitals star Alex Ovechkin found himself in a similar jackpot.

You get the idea.

No, it's not very admirable to revel in someone's misfortune. It's despicable, actually. But we're all human beings with human frailties. Occasionally, we enjoy seeing someone squirm, especially when that person is the star player for our team's hated rival.

Well, Roethlisberger is squirming, big time.

So are the Steelers.

How those Ravens fans must be loving every second of it.

The Roethlisberger case might not be resolved soon. Investigators in Milledgeville, Ga., where he was accused of the sexual assault early Friday morning by a 20-year-old college student, held a brief news conference Monday to say they still want to interview seven potential witnesses as well as Roethlisberger for a second time. He hasn't been charged in the alleged incident but is taking the matter seriously enough that he has hired prominent Atlanta lawyer Ed Garland, who has represented such notable NFL players as the Ravens' Ray Lewis and Jamal Lewis in high-profile criminal cases. Garland released a statement Monday, saying, "The facts show that there was no criminal activity. No sexual assault occurred."

No matter the outcome of the case, Roethlisberger will lose to at least some degree. His reputation has taken another big hit. This is the second sexual assault allegation against him in eight months. The first led to a civil suit in July by a Nevada woman, who claimed Roethlisberger raped her at a Lake Tahoe resort in July 2008. That case is dragging through the legal system.

Here's the best part for giddy Ravens fans: All of this leaves the Steelers in a terrible spot.

Franchise quarterbacks don't come along often. The Steelers have one in Roethlisberger -- a two-time Super Bowl winner -- and have invested $102 million in him, making him the face of the team. The Rooneys hardly could have imagined that Roethlisberger twice would make these kinds of headlines.

If it were a marginal player involved, the Steelers almost certainly would have released him. They cut wide receiver Cedrick Wilson in March 2008, after he was involved in a domestic abuse case. But the team can't release Roethlisberger. It needs him to win games.

Hypocrisy? Sure, it is.

Do stars get preferential treatment in life? Absolutely. The Steelers didn't release linebacker James Harrison after he was involved in a domestic case about the same time as Wilson. That might have had something to do with him being a Pro Bowl player a season earlier.

Is this turning out to be a very entertaining winter for Ravens fans? You know that answer.

What's funny is Baltimore didn't need the Roethlisberger case to make Friday a terrific day. Getting Boldin for third- and fourth-round draft picks in a trade with the Arizona Cardinals could have stood alone and served that purpose.

"The Ravens just got better," coach John Harbaugh told the Baltimore media after the team immediately signed Boldin to a four-year, $28 million contract extension.

A lot better, actually.

The Ravens' defense, though aging, still is led by Lewis and remains good enough to win low-scoring games. Now, with the additions of Boldin and deep-threat wide receiver Donte' Stallworth to quarterback Joe Flacco and running back Ray Rice, the offense is capable of winning high-scoring games.

Boldin fills the Ravens' most glaring need.

"I believe I can help, maybe get them to another level," he told the team's website.

In unrelated personnel moves Monday, the Steelers signed two free agents -- safety Will Allen and wide receiver Arnaz Battle -- and agreed to contract terms with a third -- offensive tackle Jonathan Scott. Then Monday night, they reached an agreement with safety Ryan Clark, who appeared ready to leave as a free agent. Keeping Clark is good, unexpected news. He is a proven player to line up in the secondary next to Troy Polamalu.

Somehow, though, I don't think it ruined the day for Ravens fans.

This is why I don't like the majority of Ravens fans.
It also was the day that news broke of another sexual assault allegation against Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger…It’s hard to say what made Ravens fans happier. I’m guessing the Roethlisberger mess.

So a woman possibly being sexually assaulted made you happy? Awesome. Some of you fail to grasp the disconnect between football and real life. Nothing about this case should make you happy. Say it is true. Yay! Ben doesn’t play. But at what cost? Some girl was sexually assaulted. You stay classy Baltimore.

I may make “Murderin’ Ray” jokes, but that is because he was clearly innocent and in the wrong place at the wrong time. As of now, we don’t know what really happened in this case. And to think the possibility of two ruined lives gives you jollies? Wow.

With the 18th pick of the 2010 NFL Draft the Pittsburgh Steelers select Florida QB Tim Tebow. (not a RB!)

Hey, so we share something in common. We have been getting this crap since Ray’s case. We all know Ben is innocent, but Baltimore has to get some joy out of Ben getting in this sort of trouble. I feel terrible for the 2 girls involved for this, I really do.

However I do not feel bad for Ben. He is the QB on the team I hate most, so his negatives are positives for Baltimore. I do not feel bad at all for him not learning his lesson the first time and then allowing for something like this to happen. Now, take your mind off the situation and enjoy a nice Terps ass wooping on GT tomorrow.

Everyone who is a Ravens fan hates Ben

but to see him in this mess is another thing. The girls may be innocent victims or just looking for their five minutes of fame. Either way, he shouldn’t be in a room at a college bar as a high profile athlete who has already gotten a black eye with younger girls. He should be able to meet a nice girl (preferably woman) his own age without trolling bars and clubs, which is where all the bad news in these types of incidents come from.

However, any edge we have to beat Pittsburgh works for most fans and we will gladly accept your excuses whenever we do.

And you only hate Ben because he’s good at that game of footyball. You didn’t hate Tommy Gun as much as Ben, did you? No of course not. You hate our team because now, they are winning, and consistently either getting to the playoffs, or barely missing them.

You hate our team, while we respect yours. How weird is that? They basically play the exact style of football (not so much lately, but still).

Bruce, this is an honest question, nothing intended by it: Were you a Baltimore Colts fan, a Browns fan, or did you become a Ravens fan when they got to Balt from Cleveland?

You hate our team, while we respect yours. How weird is that? They basically play the exact style of football (not so much lately, but still).

Man, I cannot tell you how much I hear us called the murders by your fans around here. In Baltimore, we have so many dumb and unintelligent people when it comes to football and they talk so much shit about the Ravens. You bloggers might have some respect for us, but man oh man I have met a ton of jack ass Pitt fans in my life.

They act like the snobby rich kids who live off daddy because they have won some superbowls, when these guys are still working at Roy Rogers.

I'm being totally honest here

You have seen me say this before, so everybody else can blow me if you think I’m just being nice because I’m over here on your blog: If the Ravens were in the NFC, I would root for a Steelers/Ravens SB every year. I LOVE smashmouth football, and there are no better two teams in the NFL at that style of play than ours.

Were the Ravens to be in the NFC, I would absolutely have an Ed Reed jerzee as well.

But the thing is

That if we played in the NFC, we would be building our team to win that division. We have built our team recently around making sure we are right next to you or better than you. Have we shown in recent years that we can hang with Pitt, no we haven’t. But our team has been built to beat the Steelers first and foremost I believe.

I can tell you that if the Steelers were in a different division, I would still hate them. Something about ugly, fat Bennigans that I just hate. Heins Ward needs to get his teeth knocked out and Holmes beats his chest after every 3 yard catch he makes now (yes I know he was the superbowl hero) Only guys I like on your team are Troy, Spinandfall, and Wallace.

Steeler fans don’t seem to respect the Ravens at all and seem to hate us as much as we hate them. The only difference is over the years, the Steelers have won more often- up until this year I tell you!

I was a Baltimore Colts fan since I became aware of football when I was around 10 years old in the late 60’s. I have tons of old Colts memories but am over the move to Indy now. Sort of.

MaLoR's comment got me thinking...

I’ve heard so often about “I hate ‘Team X’ because ‘Team X’ has the worst fans.” I think that there’s a significant percentage of football fans that tend to be the loud, obnoxious, drunken, frat-boy types, and that one can drive anywhere, find a nice concentration of them, and then conclude that any team has a huge collection of douche-bags as supporters.
However, those types rarely have the thinking power to write anything intelligent on a blog, and consequently, most don’t stick around very long in the online community.
I have to say that most people get along pretty well with each other on these SBN sites, and I always wince a little when I find someone posting a “look what the fans over at such-and-such are saying about us!” because it’s a little childish and usually blown out of proportion. (Not referring to this blog, btw)
I guess, I’m saying that MaLoR, and people like him shouldn’t be judging us collectively based on how a bunch of campus blow-hards act.

Ive been saying that for a long time. People say they hate Steeler fans cause their all douchebags. Well, we have ours, you have yours, and every other team has theirs.
Now of course the Steelers (due to their recent success) have many bandwagon fans that are total douches, but those aren’t Steeler fans, they are band wagon fans. The Pats have their fair share, any recently successful team will have band wagon fans. So don’t hate a team because of their bandwagon fans.
Basically, if you’re going to hate a team hate them because they are your rival, they are not your team, maybe they have lame colors…………..but never hate a team because of their fans.

You should know first hand

We will be just fine if DD has to take the reigns. Hand the ball off more, balance the offense and only make him throw when he needs to (like Ben’s first 2 years). And Dixon can be a Vick-esque style QB.

If we have a healthy Troy and can get a stud CB or LB in the first round, I think we will be just fine.

Dixon > Smith

Yes, he lost his first start ever. So did Manning, Favre, Moon, etc. Who cares? Not to add it was on the road against the team’s most heated rival.

Dixon clearly surpassed what anyone expected from him that game. He may have lost the game for them in OT, but he also put them in the lead late in the 4th only to have the D surrender a TD. With significant practice and time behind center Dixon would do just fine.

Not sure what makes Dixon better than Smith. I guess it is just because he is a Steeler right? I do not think Dixon has a better throwing motion than Smith and there is a reason he won the Heisman.

And if given a chance to start on a team, Smith would do just fine. But again, you love him cause he is a Steeler and we love Troy because he is a Raven, and is better.

Just because you have Smith’s poster on your bedroom ceiling doesn’t mean the rest of us idolize him. I know he’ll crawl to Cleveland, but I’d drive him myself to get him and his whiny agent out of town.

Based on what I’ve seen from the two quarterbacks in regular season play, I’d rather have Dixon as my backup. As long as he’s wearing black and piss, though, I’m happy to see him throw picks to Kruger during clutch drives.

And basing your argument off of 1 game seems stupid doesn't it?

Yea, again, he played “well” He had that good run because of a defensive brain fart on our part, its not like he was Michael Vicking people like Vick did against the Vikings that one game. He ran in clear space because we made a mistake. I can recall maybe 2 passes that were fairly decent in that game, but again, he lost the game for you. He might have brought you back in the 4th because of our mistakes, but he lost the game for you.

by Mr MaLoR on Mar 12, 2010 2:45 PM EST up reply actions

Riiight…I forgot the nobody can beat the Ravens…they only lose because they make mistakes occasionally. Dixon had another huge run in that game, where he gashed up your defense. It was called back by a stupid holding call on Colon that wasn’t near the play. Dixon looked great on his feet and definitely made your players miss. Also, I thought exposing a team’s mistakes was called being a football player? How do you think Rice gashed up our D in that game? Farrior made a mistake and so did Clark on his two big plays. Rice made a good play, just the same as Dixon did on his play.

With our WR corp and a bit of good coaching he could develop his passing and we would only need him to throw it maybe 15-20 times. That’s not difficult.

Because his GF wouldn’t let him baptize his child… she had it coming right? So that makes him not a thug?

And it was cool with the Rooney family that he did that because he can sack the QB, but the same offseason (2008) a special teamer (pardon me for not remembering a scrubs name) hit his GF and was immediately cut…

I guess it all depends on your definition of thug. And no I don’t think she had it coming, what a ridiculous thing to say. I severely doubt it was ‘ok’ with the Rooney family…

The other guy who hit his girlfriend was our 3rd WR Cedric Wilson.

And I wouldn’t say our ownership condones violence (or crime for that matter) as much as every other organization. I mean look at how many criminals the Bengals have signed. I don’t see the Steelers doin that, or most the other teams in this league.

But anyway, you’re missing my point I think. The original post of this thread is just totally blasting the Steelers for something their QB did, and is still in the legal process. thats because we have our fair share of people who know that you have a reasonable opinion. Only the douches ignore or bash you because of your fanhood (im not sure thats even a word).

Let's chill a bit on this

You have to respect another fansw passion for their team, just as we want other teams’ fans to understand our passion for the Ravens. Try to be above the name calling and personal attacks as I have heard from the powers that be that we should all lighten up a bit at The Beatdown.

was this directed at me?

I’m not sure. I’ve been chill. I’m the one getting bashed for what I thought was a fairly reasonable response to an open thread.
If this is directed at Ampallang then it makes sense.

And Hines Ward isnt?....

A thug?? Hines Ward is a badd a$$ mofo who is as thuggish as they get in the NFL. dirty dirty dirty.

by Rayisyourdaddy on Mar 16, 2010 12:58 PM EDT reply actions

Ward smiles way too much

to be considered “thuggish.” Sissy-ish, perhaps, but not a bad mofo by any means. If he would hit you when you are expecting it, then he would be abad man. Only Muhammed Ali was a “bad man!”

aka 'Rexx'

by Bruce Raffel on Mar 16, 2010 7:25 PM EDT up reply actions

first person I heard of who considers Hines Ward a thug.

Sure from some view points he may be a dirty player but that doesn’t make you a thug.

by shleeve on Mar 17, 2010 3:33 AM EDT up reply actions

I don't personally think he is a thug... a douche with that fake ass hokie smile

But I could see the arguement… he goes out of his way to hurt people and than stands over them talking trash… if Suggs did that you would cry thug. Again, I don’t see it that way personally, but I could just see the flip side too.

Hey,

I will eat your thumbs in wii resort sports.

Effe Hampstead.

by ATXRaven on Mar 17, 2010 10:55 AM EDT up reply actions

I will mash you in anything Wii related. And I just moved to Hampstead about 4 years ago, used to live right in the heart of B-More County in the Owings Mills/Reisterstown area. Carroll County is full of inbreds. Go to Baughers and drink some cider.

You have to hate losing more than you love winning.

by Mr MaLoR on Mar 17, 2010 11:03 AM EDT up reply actions

Hey! It wasn't my choice to live in that county!

I hate that I’m the only liberal in that entire area. I had to stop explaining my job to people because they look at me like I’m retarded for working with drug addicts. Sort of a “why would you want to help those people” look.

by ATXRaven on Mar 17, 2010 11:20 AM EDT up reply actions

People in Carroll County questioning that?

Dude, that place is the heroin capital of Maryland. It has been infested with drugs forever.

by Mr MaLoR on Mar 17, 2010 11:24 AM EDT up reply actions

I know, I went to high school there.

But it really isn’t that bad if you look at the stats… it just had a problem for a few years while I was in high school in the last 90’s/early 2000’s.

I was surprised at how bad the city was when I moved back… way worse than I expected, and I had low expectations.

And the look they give is less because of the drug addict aspect and more of a judgement of working primarily with destitute minorties… carroll county is not exactly supportive of the poor, let alone poor blacks.

They used to deal drugs outside of Cranberry Mall when I was younger. Crazy looking kids standing outside the front doors while I was going there for that awsome arcade they used to have there.

Damn they did have an awesome arcade there!

One of the last that you saw anywhere outside of the beach.

That was my Friday and Saturday night through middle schoolish. Area 51 and lethal enforcers like whoa.

What's up

with all the car burnings with bodies inside and double murders all of a sudden in Hampstead? I always thought it was a nice, quiet small town that only hosted Little League Tournaments for excitement.

Holy crap, didn’t know about this. Haven’t been around here so much. I am actually right outside of Hampstead. About 15-20 minutes up the road is where the KKK is.

You have to hate losing more than you love winning.

by Mr MaLoR on Mar 18, 2010 10:30 AM EDT up reply actions

NO...

KKK is 15-20 minutes in every direction!

by ATXRaven on Mar 18, 2010 11:33 AM EDT up reply actions

Well what makes...

Suggs a thug in your opinion?

I didnt realize you knew every Pitt fan. I don’t call Ray Lewis a murderer. Not every Steeler fan is a douche okay, dont treat us all the same.
I do however call Suggs a thug, because he is.

I assume you meant he is a thug because he talks trash in the media and called hines out? Ward talks plenty of smack to the media too.

However, if you have some other reason to call Suggs a thug, than the comparison is negated.

by Rayisyourdaddy on Mar 17, 2010 2:03 PM EDT up reply actions

no

I’m done with that discussion cause I don’t wanna hear the ridiculousness that comes out of Ampallangs mouth (or keyboard)

Just to add to the fun...

"OOH! A piece of candy. OOH! A piece of candy."

by SteelFever on Mar 18, 2010 4:22 PM EDT up reply actions

That is pretty much the wrong argument to make. The correct one is that all your LB’s are sissies who cry when little Hines Ward comes and whacks them when they weren’t looking.

I fully expect Suggs to lightly tap a QB before he sacks him, and then give him time to turn and face his tackler, because, you know, hitting a QB when he isn’t facing you is pretty much immoral.

I’m sorry, but getting blindsided is called a lack of field awareness, offensive players have to have it, defensive players do too. Whining about it when you talk about taking out other players and hurting people, that’s just pathetic. It’s like the 3rd grade bully the first time someone punches him, he always goes crying to teacher.

Sorry I showed up too late to really get in on the fun.

by Phantaskippy on Mar 18, 2010 7:57 PM EDT up reply actions

At least you are admitting that Heins is a 3rd grade child. I am really sorry to say it to you, but I will cheer when Wards gets carted off the field on a stretcher, I really will cheer and laugh at him. It is just one of my life long goals to see it happen. Again, I am sorry.

You have to hate losing more than you love winning.

by Mr MaLoR on Mar 18, 2010 8:11 PM EDT up reply actions

thats a little FUBAR there

as much as I hate Suggs I wouldn’t cheer if he got injured.

by shleeve on Mar 18, 2010 8:21 PM EDT up reply actions

Guess you don’t hate Suggs as much as I hate Ward. Just be amazing to see someone knock the teeth out his head, or break his back. Ben used to be on this list, but was recently taken off after South Park made fun of his sex addiction. That was enough for me.

You have to hate losing more than you love winning.

by Mr MaLoR on Mar 18, 2010 8:28 PM EDT up reply actions

Wow, that is pretty serious. I reserve that level of hatred for people who end sentences with prepositions and people who drive on the shoulder to try and bypass traffic.

People who root for Michigan State or the Browns should just be put down, it’s a mercy thing.

by Phantaskippy on Mar 19, 2010 12:43 PM EDT up reply actions

What is there to root for with the Browns? Like, why in the world would you want to discuss the impact of Seneca Wallace and Jake Delhomme?

You have to hate losing more than you love winning.

by Mr MaLoR on Mar 19, 2010 12:49 PM EDT up reply actions

to me they just made fun of Ben for being dumb, they were mostly making fun of society for how it reacts when they realize men like sex. I thought it was a pretty clever episode.

by shleeve on Mar 18, 2010 8:33 PM EDT reply actions

Still funny though to see his dumbass on there. South Park does always make a great point in their shows though about how messed up society is.
