Jared Gaither: Deal or no deal?
Everyone has a price. The question is always, what is it. With rumors swirling about Gaither being trade bait, what would you, as a Ravens fan, want back in a deal involving Gaither. He has shown he is a solid player, but he has also shown flaws and inconsistency, along with a bad work ethic. In theory, based on his size, he is just like Jonathan Ogden. But in practice, he leaves alot to be desired between his work ethic, and his inability to play through pain like JO always did. I believe he is not ever going to be an elite LT, and doesn't sound like the team thinks he projects well on the right side. So the best solution before he demands elite LT money is....to trade him and slide Oher to the BlindSide! The question is, what is his value to us as Ravens fans? How much would we have to receive back for him in order to be happy with the trade?
The opinions posted here are those of the administrator of this blog and his loyal readers. They are in no way official comments from the team, and should not be misconstued as such, even though he thinks he could do just as well or even a better job!

If we cannot get a 1st round pick for him, I would do a 2nd and 3rd. I think a 1st round is actually fair. Gaither is one of the few young LT in the league and is one of the best athletes at LT. He was going to be a first round pick before academic issues, so people write him off for that. I have also heard that his work ethic is not so good, but I think a desperate team will make a move with a first for him. An experienced young player with great upside is better than a rookie with upside IMO.

yup
He is def worth a late 1st rounder, but in some ways i would rather an early 2nd rounder and an early 4th rounder. pay scale is significantly lower there, and we could recoup 2 picks just like we gave up…..
maybe a team like Det, KC or Stl would be willing to give up picks to solidify their Oline, and they have picks early in each round
Decent Left Tackles are so hard to find though
I want im back, unless we get a firs and third.. which is not gonna happen
I agree that decent left tackles are hard to find
But it just so happens to be that he was a really, really good LT by the name of Michael Oher playing RT for us right now. RT are easy to find in this league, maybe one of the easiest positions to fill.

Decent LT...
Are a dime a dozen. Stud LT’s are hard to find. Gaither will never, imho be a stud. He will be a decent LT who will want max money. Not worth it. He is the Derrick Coleman of the Ravens lol. Lots of potential, slim chance he will tap into it. I say cut your loses before you have to let him walk for nothing. If a 1st rounder or an early 2nd and 4th come along, he is gone in my mind

Yeah
From want I’m hearing from fans and watching Gaither play I agree that if the right deal comes along Gaithers gone. I agree that Gaither’s worth a 2 and 4 at least. He’s a guy that has started 20 plus games, a proven pro and not yet in his prime. I don’t think a 1st rounder is possible because of his questionalble work ethic .
Yea, and a 2nd and 3rd/4th is nearly just as good as getting another 1st for him.

Hopefully some of these teams with two first rounders or a few second... like Pats with 3
take a chance on him. I would rather have a high 2 with a 4 than a first with how deep this draft is supposed to be. Ozzie is at his best pulling the trigger on players left on his big board while others go for need.
Exactly
Like I said above, if Ozzie got a top 5 pick in both the 2nd and 3rd rounds, I know for a fact he would be picking a guy in his top 30 with that 2nd round pick and a guy in his top 60 with that 3rd round pick. Be sweet.

More than likely
a team grabbing Gaither would be one of the later picking teams, so would I want a late 2nd and 3rd rounder for him? Maybe not. A late first rounder? Yes.

Not true! Many teams at the top of the draft could use a young, stud LT. Try Stl, KC, Det, TB, Was (all 5 in the top 5) Sea, Oak, Buf. That is most of the top 10. So yah, why not trade a 2nd and 4th to us so they don’t need to spend a 1st round pick on a possible bust, they can spend a 2nd and 4th on a player who has shown he is good.

We might rule STL out, remember they chose Jason Smith as the first tackle taken in last years draft. So I would think that might rule them out. Teams are going to want to use Gaither at LT most likely, but those other teams could definitely use Gaither.

They might need a LT
but they won’t give up a first pick that high for him. If they say they’ll give us their 2nd and 3rd, then perhaps, but I doubt that will happen.

Rayis...correct
and well said. He will not be here after his contract is over, whenever the CBA determines that is. He will want elite LT money and Ozzie will not pay it and I don’t blame him. That might affect what other teams want to be held hostage for, but I can see a team drafting late in the first round say that he is better than anything they can get at that point and give us a first for him. that said, I would still take a second and third for him, or even erhaps a 2nd and 4th, if the team is in the top half of the draft.
