T.O. a Raven?

Big news around the league is that Terrell Owens most likely destination is going to be Baltimore. Now when I first heard this i was a bit disapointed but the more i think of it, the more I like it; hear me out

Star-divide

Terrell Owens is very inconsistent, but when given a strong armed QB, even at age 36, he is still pretty much a lock for atleast 8 touchdowns. Another big question is his age, but i think that can actually be beneficial. Assuming we retain Mason and sign Owens, we can probably take a WR early in the round. Now i know that Owens isn't really a role model, but a rookie reciever could learn a lot by watching a possesion reciever like Mason and an explosive reciever like Owens. A big question that remains is: the quality of his hands. Owens can drop tons of passes, he had 9 all of last year; mason had 7. But Owens performance depends on his motivation. I think that playing for a Superbowl Contender will raise his level of play along with his morale.

So looking at our offense, we'll have strong running game as usual, a more experienced offensive line, and recievers like Owens, Mason, Stallworth, potential rookie (we need to let Clayton and Williams go).

With an improved offense, our defense will be fresh. The signing of Terrell Owens just might throw us on top!

The opinions posted here are those of the administrator of this blog and his loyal readers. They are in no way official comments from the team, and should not be misconstued as such, even though he thinks he could do just as well or even a better job!

The only problem with this

Is that if we signed Owens, there is a possibility that our two starting WR are 35 and 36 years old. Not so sure how I feel about that. If we did sign Owens, I would like it to be as a #3 guy. I think it would be smart to have a younger guy get in there and make an impact.

yeah there is age there

but if we get him, he’s the number one option guaranteed

i’ll take him over mason though

by ravsagain on Feb 28, 2010 2:18 PM EST up reply actions

Hogwash

I’ll believe it when I see it. This rumor just makes little sense. I really doubt that the Ravens organization would pay Owens the type of money he’s likely pursuing after the way he dissed them in ’04.

Then again, if there was an opportunity to sign him for a contract similar to Stallworth’s, it would be a very good move.

They say the empty can rattles the most...

If we did sign Owens, It would definitely be a 1 year deal for about 1.2-1.5 million.

See story on Front Page

and besides, Owens is not going to be a mentor for anyone, be it a young or newly drafted WR. He is here for himself and if that gets us 80 receptions and 10 TD’s, I’m all for it, but to expect him to teach the kids here, don’t get that in your head.

aka 'Rexx'

by Bruce Raffel on Feb 28, 2010 2:56 PM EST reply actions

yeah definitley

i’m not saying he’ll teach, but the fact that an explosive reciever is there, a rokie could learn by just watching what he’s doing right

How is that a character move the Ravens trumpet. The guy basically dogged us out (thank goodness) and now would only be collecting retirement money at our expense. He would be an improvement BUT we would still be suckers and hypocrits.

by raven on Feb 28, 2010 10:31 PM EST reply actions

I agree and some...

Re-sign Mason,we’ve added Stallworth and we can probably get TO cheap. He was no problem in Buffalo,he;‘s at the end and might have one great year left.He is better then most of the receivers we’ve had.I wouldn’t want him dating my daughter, but he stays in great shape and Joe would benefit greatly with a cast of veteran receivers including Heap plus the running game, even better by shifting Oher to right tackle ,he’s way quicker defending the blindside…also TO wouldn’t be a problem in the locker room, because it is still Ray Lewis’s team. One more thing,TO thinks a ring will validate his career…so go for it! Draft a top CB and pick up another thur free agency.I would rather have Brandon Marshall, but wouldn’t mortgage the farm for him…flock ’em up!

by thomlord on Mar 1, 2010 9:32 AM EST reply actions

Yup

I think it is smart to bring in a mix of veterans and younger players (rookies) for next year. Veterans like Mason and TO know how to win and would be great for the rookies to watch. If we cannot or do not make a move for Boldin or Marshall, then TO seems to be the best option out there. Who else would you want? Plus, this way we could still get a WR or 2 early in the draft like Benn, Tate, Briscoe and so on. There is really no wrong way to do this, Ozzie just has to do it Lol.

The more I look at it

the clearer it gets. We need to obviously sign a top flight FA receiver. That done, our biggest need is either pass rushing DE or CB. Other than local product Joe Haden, there really is no one else worthy of first round selection. Wilson of Boise State would be a reach at #25. That leaves DE for round one and CB for round two, provided we still have those picks after trading/FA is done with.

That’s why last year while I focused on the Ravens needing UNC WR Hakeem Nicks, who would have been a great addition here, I’m more than satisfied what we did with getting Oher. This season, I am beginning to focus my attention on lobbying for the team to go get Florida DE Carlos Dunlap. The guy is a beast with size and speed that we covet and has already up’d his draft stock with a very good 40 yard dash (4.59?)

by Bruce Raffel on Mar 1, 2010 12:14 PM EST reply actions

Yea dunlap is a monster.

Only problem is that he is said to be lazy and take plays off. We already have a guy named Suggs who does that. But I would love to get Dunlap and hopefully his mentality would change once he gets in the weight room with Ray.

You got it

Like Suggs had a slow 40 time, which caused him to drop to us, perhaps Dunlap’s Combine will hurt him and from the tape all I see is a football player who disrupts offenses with an incredibly athletic body for a big guy and will learn to be more complete as he gets into the pro game and Training Camp coaches get ahold of him.

aka 'Rexx'

by Bruce Raffel on Mar 1, 2010 7:32 PM EST reply actions

I would love Dunlap

I would love it if he dropped to us because it would give us an amazing d-line with Suggs, Greg, Ngata and a combo of Pryce/Dunlap. I would also love it if we did move Suggs to the line full time and put Kruger at LB. He earned a lot of respect from me because of the Steelers game. I also think I would love to get TO even if I have hated him his entire career…

by NgataChance!! on Mar 1, 2010 7:42 PM EST up reply actions

Agreed

I would love to see us in the 4-3 with Dunlap and Suggs with their hands in the dirt and Ngata and either Gregg or Bannan inside, protecting Ray. He could have JJ and either Kruger or TGooden on both sides of him and once Ray retires, Ellerbe can take over roaming the middle. We’d be set for awhile with as good a front seven as any in the league. Now if only we can straighten out the secondary and offense, huh!?

aka 'Rexx'

by Bruce Raffel on Mar 1, 2010 7:50 PM EST up reply actions

one solid player away from a solid secondary

Foxwaorth really came on at the end of the yeaar, Landry had a great year, and Reed will be Reed (hopefully for a few more seasons to come)
another starting corner is all we need, and some decent depth

by ravsagain on Mar 1, 2010 8:20 PM EST up reply actions

Landry had a great year?

Perhaps LaRon Landry, but the one in purple can’t cover well enough to have me convinced whether he is actually a better option than Tom Zbikowski right now. Landry has the physical tools to be a great thumper out there but he needs to greatly improve his cover skills to convince me.

5 interceptions to lead the team after returning from a career threatening injury

give him some time, he’s still young, I wanna see what he does two years removed from that IR stint

Dawan had a really good year IMO. I believe he will be a pro powler next season. Mark my words!

by Zachary Beard on Mar 2, 2010 8:57 PM EST up reply actions

Everyone throws away from Ed Reed

so playing next to Ed makes anyone look better. Look what Kim Herring did for himself by signing a huge FA contract witht he Rams (and then failing) after playing next to Rod Woodson? Look who did so well next to Ray and then bombed w/o him. I like Landry and think he could be very good but his cover skills are horrible. Let him prove me wrong next season and I’ll be the first to jump on his bandwagon. Until then, I think either Zbi or Nakamura could do just as well.

aka 'Rexx'

by Bruce Raffel on Mar 3, 2010 9:08 AM EST up reply actions

He can't cover as well as Zibi or Nakamura but

When healthy he sure can hit like a ton of bricks… and that’s exactly what you need from a SS that plays in the AFC North. I would trade a liability in coverage for someone who can knock snot bubbles into opposing HB’s in this division any day. Of course that doesn’t help us get to the next level against the Mannings of the league, but hopefully a big WR will make up for it… maybe.

by ATXRaven on Mar 4, 2010 8:26 AM EST up reply actions

Then the team has to protect him in pass coverage

because he gets horribly burned by both TE’s and RB’s, but does tackle them after they catch the ball. Whoopee!

aka 'Rexx'

by Bruce Raffel on Mar 4, 2010 8:38 AM EST up reply actions

It's the same situation as Ryan Clark

Clark can’t cover for ish but everyone thinks he is awesome for playing next to Troy and blowing up Willis. I understand your point though… just playing devil’s advocate mroe than anything. I just like him for those 6 AFCN games where the power running game is so key to finish out games. A SS like him makes you not want to eat hits in the 4th quarter… wh ich is where games are won/lost in this division.

Landry sucked this year compared to what he can do. He needs to get his speed back and stop the muscle man work outs. He lost agility and speed. When teams throw away from Ed Reed you better have at least 5 INTs.

by raven on Mar 3, 2010 4:40 PM EST up reply actions

I totally agree

I think Dawan can get phased out if we get a good guy like Earl Thomas in the draft. I fear we might get Taylor Mays though if he’s available, and I am not at all big on him. We’d be stupid not to pick up Brandon Marshall. He is one of the very elite players in the league, and we will likely never find another one of him in a draft while Flacco is around. I hate T.O. Bringing him here would be a disaster. He’s like a virus.

No way we go safety in the first round and

besides, Thomas may now go in the top ten anyway.

The more I think about it, the more fun having TO would be. That way we can play our A-hole against Cincy’s twice.

by raven on Mar 3, 2010 4:50 PM EST reply actions

we are gonna get marshall

he was only tendered a first, while jackson and austin got a 1&3. So that means we could try and do 2nd and 3rd, or a first straight up. This looks very promising and exciting for ravens fans!

by sunny2189 on Mar 3, 2010 5:28 PM EST reply actions

Who would want to give up a first round pick for a proven WR like Marshall when we can draft Golden Tate and breed him to be good in 3 years? Gotta keep them draft picks.

You have to hate losing more than you love winning.

by Mr MaLoR on Mar 3, 2010 5:56 PM EST up reply actions

ewwwwww

Tate? Seriously? He is Mark Clayton or Travis Taylor all over again.

Would rather have Marshall for double the price and our 1st rounder than Tate. OR any other WR in the draft, even Bryant. Marshall is a stud, go look at his game log playing with a mediocre QB like Orton. Look at his clips. He is a SICK athlete, up there in raw talent with Fitzgerald, Andre Johnson, OchoCinco and Calvin Johnson.

Did I mention he is just 25 years old? most of the WR in the draft are 21 yrs old, but it will take most of them 2-3 years to start to fully show their potential. And the chance that they reach Marshall’s current skill level? I would put it between 10 and 25 %. And that might be extremely generous!

by Rayisyourdaddy on Mar 4, 2010 1:42 PM EST up reply actions

Yea, the Tate thing was a joke

Just being ignorant about the way Ozzie handles things. He does a great job of keeping us in contention, but has never really done much to put us over the hump. He may not have had the opportunities to, but this Marshall stuff puts us over the hump.

You have to hate losing more than you love winning.

Landry's injury

Usually takes longer to fully come back then had passed at the beg of the season. He should be back to normal by now, and he looked better toward the end of the season.

At CB, I thought Foxworth and Webb looked great toward the middle/end of the year. I think we need to use a 2nd, 3rd or 4th rounder on a CB to develop as our #3 and as insurance for injury or regression by either of the starters. Bring back Washington IF he is cheap. Maybe he can recapture what he had that gave us the #2 Pass Defense 2 years ago. If not, not such a big gamble.

by Rayisyourdaddy on Mar 4, 2010 1:37 PM EST reply actions

we just tendered Washington

So he will be back… that should buy us time with developing another Webb (if we are so lucky twice in two years) or just buy us time until Webb’s knee can heal.

I tore my ACL/MCL and jacked up the Meniscus playing rugby in college and I was playing again after about 7 months. However, I was a 5’10" Inside Center and not playing CB in the NFL, so we def. need to buy the time with our tender we placed on FWash.

by ATXRaven on Mar 4, 2010 3:13 PM EST up reply actions

I tore my ACL, MCL, and PCL

in hoops. I want to say I landed bad after a “Darryl Dawkins Chocolate Thunder” dunk, but it was a long oass that I just landed awkwardly that did it. Anyway, it never really came totally back after surgery, but then again, I’m over twice these guys’ ages and their full-time job was to get better. Either way, it’s amazing to me how well they recover and return to action.

aka 'Rexx'

by Bruce Raffel on Mar 5, 2010 8:51 AM EST up reply actions

Times have totally changed depending on when you had the surgery

Surgery now is completely different than it was even ten years ago and like you said, it’s their F/T job. It always amazes me to see the bench press numbers coming out of the combine, then I remember if my job was to be in awesome shape than I could do it too. Give yourself credit, you are only like 1.83x these guys ages.
