Ravens Final Press Conference
The Baltimore Ravens will conduct their season ending press conference this Wednesday, February 3rd, at their Owings Mills, Maryland Training Facility, and Baltimore Beatdown will be there. We have received permission from the team to attend the press conference, featuring owner Steve Bisciotti, General Manager Ozzie Newsome and Head Coach John Harbaugh. The Press Conference will begin on Wednesday at 2pm and the trio will be making statments and taking questions.
Any ideas besides my own for questions should be posted here as comments and I will review them and pick a few if I get the chance to ask a question or two. My summary of the afternoon will be posted Thursday morning on the Front Page.
Thanks.
The opinions posted here are those of the administrator of this blog and his loyal readers. They are in no way official comments from the team, and should not be misconstued as such, even though he thinks he could do just as well or even a better job!

Offseason moves
a question i would ask would be. With so much talent in the WR market would it be a safe to say that, there could be a few deals being made to bring in a few changes into the receiver group, or are you going to see how the talent stacks up with the combines around the corner?
I'll try to get that in, unless
one of the other guys ask what should be a popular question.

They said it:
Ozzie looking at “cut” players to fill WR needs. Noted Pryce, Rolle and Mason coming to the Ravens that way.
Biscotti said Joe is the key to getting better. “Pushed him out of his box a little this year.”
Ozzie says Flacco’s success depends on “Him (Ozzie) and the coaches.” Ozzie said they will add to Flacco’s need.
Ozzie on D-will not stepping up. “Derrick, Mark and Kelly Washington (what happened to D-Will)”. Basically said D-Will got bumped out. Harbs said that D-Will doesn’t know enough.
Ozzie- “I will not put this organization in a position where the need becomes more apparent than the best player.”
Biscotti- “I’m on a level playing field with the other owners..We can still spend..We are as strong as anybody out there..I’m looking forward to the constraints (league)because it makes our decisions more important.”
Harbs- “Grow Joe as a football player..progress on track..put the best players around him we can.”
Harbs- “I believe Ed’s gonna play next year…I can say the same thing about Derrick.”
Ozzie- “I have not heard from his (Troy’s) agent…were open to making our football team better. If there’s an opportunity to trade a player for another player we’ll do it.”
Ozzie- “Having sat here for 14 years there has always been a need. When I first came here we couldn’t play defense but could light it up (offensively). That’s a challenge we look forward too. We need a play maker outside, yes. But, we need other things too…If we can approve our football team we’ll do it…I want to win just like you guys want to win.”
Biscotti- basically stated that he knows that it would cost $125 million for a front line receiver or player. “It’s always going to be dead middle (getting players). When you look back at Sam Adams and Shannon Sharpe, those were the guys who got us over the hump.”
Biscotti on CBA- “Some teams are making less money than their linebackers.” He mentioned Jacksonville (who was chosen over B-more for the expansion).
Cass- “We’re doing well compared to other teams around the league (revenue wise).”
Harbs- “Ledarius Webb is dealing with the knee injury..I’m convinced Pual Kruger will be a very good player..Needs to put some weight on..Davon Drew will be a good player..I think the last 2 drafts built a good foundation for the football team.”
Biscotti on building a team- “There not going to be 53 angels…repeating mistakes is a sign of bad character…I’m ready to take chances on people..If someone wanted to dump Randy Moss for a 4th round draft pick I’d jump in there.”
Harbs- “If you put a 1st and 3rd (draft pick) on a guy and then he doesn’t play because he messes up you become a worse team.”
Biscotti on Suggs- “I think he came in out of shape..he’s very young..he’s going to do fine.”
Harbs- “Vitally important he’s (Suggs) here.”
Ozzie on pass interference- “We have to draw a bright line so that players, coaches and fans know what it is.”
Ozzie on how he see’s WR performance- “Yes, I do want to improve the WR position..helps the running game. We finished 9th in points… We’ve got to get better. If we get involved in a shootout, I want to be able to win that game.”
Harbs- “We want more sacks..take pressure off the secondary.”
Ozzie answering Bruce’s question on Art Modell- “I don’t know what it’s going to take…You can do your part (getting Art in to the HOF).”
When you look back at Sam Adams and Shannon Sharpe, those were the guys who got us over the hump."
Sure, they got us over the hump, but then once they left we went right down in the dump. Tired of this team building for today and not tomorrow. Tired of getting guys who can “give their all” for maybe 2 years tops. STOP THAT SHIT! Get a 25 year old Marshall and lets dominate for the next 6-7 years.
If someone wanted to dump Randy Moss for a 4th round draft pick I’d jump in there."
Then where were you in 2006 when the Raiders were perfectly fine with making that trade?
"If you put a 1st and 3rd (draft pick) on a guy and then he doesn’t play because he messes up you become a worse team."
So don’t let him mess up! Holy crap John. You are looking at the few negatives more than the many positives of making a trade like that. Bunch of pussies in this front office.
IfWhen we get involved in a shootout, Iwantwish to be able to win that game."

It was great to hear your question. When you said Bruce Raffel from the Baltimore Beatdown, I was waiting for the room to erupt into “burn him burn him”. I actually felt some remorse for writing on this site. If Harbs and Ozzie read 1/2 the stuff on here….
You got off one question and it had to be about some old fart who can’t catch the deep ball. Way to go Bruce.
That wasn't my question!
I asked about Art Modell being overlooked for the HoF and got a great response, not to mention the top topic of discussion afterwards w/ Bisciotti.
Funny thing was, my wife and sone and I were watching the MASN replay at 6pm, and they played the entire press conference, but edited out MY question and Ozzie’s answer! WTF was up w/ that!?

Sounds like no high WR pick in the draft and definately no big name WR trade or purchse..unless they get cut amd other teams can’t afford them.
Ozzie stated that when he first got here the D wasn’t good. Well Ozzie, that was 10 years ago. It took 2 years to get a good D up to speed and we are now in our 10th year without a passing game. That’s just a little part of the game. To me, Ozzie is coasting on Ray Lewis’s D too.
Agree
By 1999 we had some beast on defense. We went out, made trades, made big signings and now Ozzie seems fine with just putting as many players around Ray as possible and not around Joe. I think even Boller could have had some great success had Randy Hymes, Marcus Robinson and Clarence Moore weren’t his top 3 WR.
You have to hate losing more than you love winning.
Ozzies track record with receivers is poor. How many guys have come and gone without getting even a handful of pass attempts. Any receiver developed? We just throw guys away and root for Ray and Ed Reed returns. It’s a matter of time before the Rice horse is riden to death. The Ray and Ed train is already a stop away from the station.
10 years without a passing game. Take Mason out of the mix and we are down right horrible. I think our best deep threat ever was Jemaine Lewis (and not used enough by the Guru)…all 5’ 9" of him.
To me, the press conference could have been from any year this past decade. Ozzie said it best when he said the word “middle” refering to player selection. To me that means we are content with a .500 offense and hope that a bewtter than average defense can carry us again. It’s a great formula for coming in 2nd in the AFC North, barely scratching out Wild Cards and holding on for dear life after that. That’s only fun until you face a talented team and then we are smoked.
Fans don’t expect to win every year. I actually enjoy the building process when good young players are drafted or brought in. It’s okay to finish out of the playoffs if you are working towards a kick ass team. Fans don’t have a problem with that. Actually, the Orioles are more interesting with youth movements than they are with free agent money hounds and crusty verterans.
The Ravens need some Markakis’s and Adam Jone’s to get this thing ignited again before a boat load of vets retire. The Ravens are totally underestimating the free fall that will occur when Ray Lewis, Reed and Mason retire. We are years away from replacing these guys- the Ozzie way.
From watching the press conference, I got the strong feeling that we are going to be very aggressive this offseason. Bisciotti had alot of great answers today.

He is very opinionated
and not afraid to come out and voice it. He is so classy how he stays out of the press during the season though. Especially compared to so many other owners (Snyder, Jones). We are so very lucky to have had Modell and now Bisciotti.
Poor Orioles….

That’s what we thought last year, and what do we do? We draft an O-Lineman.

Are you not happy with Oher? By the way the WR turned out this year from last year’s draft, I am fine with not taking either of them. DHB had 9 catches on the year. Crabtree did barely anything. Nicks showed some flash. Harvin was good. Wallace was alright.
You have to hate losing more than you love winning.
Well I mean, I love Oher
But I would have loved to have Nicks.

No thanks. Not what we needed. We need 6’3" or taller.

He is still putting up serious stats this year. I think whe will be a household name in 2-3 years.

Nicks will be a very good pro WR
but Oher will be a Pro Bowler for a long time. Oher was the better pick, but even I didn’t think so right away.

Lets hope so. It at least sounds like they know we are not going to get to the superbowl riding our defense and rice, and that we need flacco to step up and he needs help on the outside.
I hear osi umenyiora is having problems with the coach, I wouldn’t mind going after him. probably a lot cheaper than peppers.
Cheaper means less effective

No it doesn’t? Where do you get that assumption? Suggs was the most expensive defensive player in history at the time and put up 4.5 sacks this year.

There is that exception.

Usi would be a decent fit here
for a couple of years, bookended with Suggs. Not quite a Peppers, but yes, much cheaper.

Warrior comes up with these theories that have no relevance or information to back them up. He still believes that Jarrett Johnson should be benched for Paul Kruger.
You have to hate losing more than you love winning.
And I will stand by that opinion untill I get to see him start for a whole season to prove me wrong.

But yes, Kruger will be beast one day. For sure. Right there along side JJ. Krug my boy.

That's all I'm saying
I would love to see him play LE

That may be true, but But I think Kruger will have a much brighter future.

There is no reason he can’t be a pro-bowl player. 2nd round picks tend to do that with the Ravens. JJ is the man though. He is a true Raven, even turned down more money from other clubs a few years back to stick with us.
I would love to see our DE problems be fixed with Kruger, and we all know that could happen if Ozzie believed so.
You have to hate losing more than you love winning.
I think Kruger is way overmatched in the pros
and even coach said he needs to gain weight, which will make him bigger and stronger, but lessen his speed.
