Seven From Sunday: Week 5

A look at seven statistical highlights from games played at 1:00 p.m. ET and 4:00 p.m. ET on Sunday, October 10, the fifth week of the 2010 season.

·        Quarterbacks PHILIP RIVERS (1,759) of the San Diego Chargers, KYLE ORTON (1,733) of the Denver Broncos and PEYTON MANNING (1,609) of the Indianapolis Colts have each passed for over 1,600 yards in their team’s first five games in 2010.
Rivers, Orton and Manning give the 2010 season three quarterbacks with at least 1,600 passing yards through their team’s first five games of a season, the first time in NFL history this has been accomplished.
·        Detroit kick returner STEFAN LOGAN had a 105-yard kickoff-return touchdown in the Lions’ 44-6 win over St. Louis, tied for the sixth-longest kickoff return touchdown in NFL history.  ELLIS HOBBS (New England, September 9, 2007) holds the league record with a 108-yard return.

The 2010 season is the first since 1970 with at least one kickoff-return touchdown in each of the first five weeks.

·        Chicago running back MATT FORTÉ rushed for 166 yards and two touchdowns in the Bears’ 23-6 win at Carolina.  Forté, who had an 89-yard touchdown catch in Week 1, had a 68-yard touchdown run against the Panthers and is the fifth player since 1970 to record an 85+ yard touchdown catch and 65+ yard touchdown run in the same season.  The last player to accomplish the feat was WARRICK DUNN in 2003 with Atlanta.

·        Arizona quarterback MAX HALL led the Cardinals to a 30-20 victory over New Orleans in his first career start.  Hall is the first undrafted rookie quarterback to start in Week 5 or earlier since 1976 (excluding the 1987 season), when JIM ZORN started the first game for Seattle in the Seahawks’ inaugural season as an NFL franchise.

·        San Diego tight end ANTONIO GATES had a touchdown reception in the Chargers’ 35-27 loss at Oakland.  Gates has a touchdown reception in nine consecutive games, the longest streak in NFL history by a tight end and tied for the longest streak in franchise history by any player (Pro Football Hall of Famer LANCE ALWORTH).  Only five players in NFL history have recorded a longer streak, led by Pro Football Hall of Famer JERRY RICE (13 games).

Gates, who has a touchdown catch in each of the team’s first five games this year, joins WESLEY WALLS (Carolina, 1999) as the only tight ends in NFL history with a TD reception in each of the team’s first five games of a season.

·        Arizona safety KERRY RHODES had a 27-yard fumble-return touchdown in the Cardinals’ win.  Rhodes, who had a 42-yard fumble-return touchdown last week at San Diego, is the first player since MARCUS ROBERTSON in 1997 to record a 25+ yard opponents’ fumble-return touchdown in back-to-back games.

·        New York Giants wide receiver HAKEEM NICKS had 12 catches for 130 yards and two touchdowns in the Giants’ 34-10 win at Houston.  Nicks joins AMANI TOOMER (September 17, 2006) as the only players in franchise history to record 12 catches, 130 yards and two touchdowns in a single game.

Hakeem Nicks

Still wish we had drafted him. He was my guy in that draft – I was sure Oz would take him sitting 6 picks ahead of the Giants. Instead, we drafted who? Oh yeah – Michael Oher.

Never mind.

Had we not drafted Oher, we might be seeing Oniel Cousins as our starting LT at this point. Think about that one…

I'm Going to

Play a little “conspirator what if” with this one. The conspirator in me says that there is chance that if we never acquire Oher, Gaither remains our starting LT. The conspirator also says that Gaither never gets injured because he is starting LT, on a playoff team, during a contract year. I mean we are talking eight figure signing bonus territory (Dallas anybody?). So I am not sure the Cousins situation changes much. (Paging doctor Rosenhaus…)

So you are going with the notion that Gaither is faking his injury right now in a contract year because he is upset with the move to RT?

Honestly

I just do not know. Oh, I am sure he is injured. But is it legitimately serious, or is he getting medical advice from Dr. Rosenhaus? Where Drew is basically laying it out for him thus, “Jared, your body of work up until this year, what Jerry Jones and his big, fat, checkbook are judging you on, is at left tackle. You go out and play right tackle, and let us say you have a subpar year, or even a (more) serious injury, that may give other GM’s other things to think about… Look, let us make sure you are beyond 100% healthy, and if Oher goes down, then maybe we can speed up your recovery a notch; you step in, save the day for Baltimore, and I guarantee you your grand kids will never have to work a day in their lives…”

I am beginning to think Gaither, because of some bad advice, is being held back somewhat. Let us say through whatever reason, Gaiter is IR’d and then released at the end of the year. Let us say there is a prolonged outage. Gaither can then claim that time as valuable re-hab time to any potential suitors, pass whatever physical and be ready to go to be The Next Great Left Tackle in St. Louis when the labor issues are resolved… Now, if it comes out that he is really, seriously injured, then I will take back everything I say.

I think the next most frustrating thing, after Dr. Rosenhaus’s involvment, is the lack of any information about Gaither.
Look, I would love nothing more than to have Gaither come back week 9 or 10 and just start blowing people up. A solid right side with Yanda and Gaither will make four wide (Boldin, D-Mase, Housh and Stallworth) all the more realistic. And the last six or seven games of the regular season, plus going into the playoffs? Wow. In theory, if Gaither comes back and plays at his normal level, he will have less wear and tear on his body, we can run a few more minimal protection plays without worrying about Joe getting his head taken off. And it goes without saying our running game will improve.

I don’t want to believe it, but this could very well be the case. I call him Weasel Roshenhaus for a reason. Very good point as always vlad.

I Just Don't Want to Believe

This to be the case. But my BS radar meter has been pegged all the way to the right since Day One of the preseason with this guy.

I admit, it is not fair of me to speculate what is going on behind closed doors at The Castle, in the trainers room, etc, but even the “mystery” surrounding Ed Reed’s injury eventually came out. It is just plain weird and suspicious that more has not come to surface about Gaither’s injury -HIPAA be damned… Where is the flight to visit Dr. James Andrews to get this fixed or at least diagnosed properly like everybody else in the NFL?

by vlad755 on Oct 12, 2010 1:37 PM EDT up reply actions

Good points again about Dr. Andrews and all that. There is always something fishy with a Rosenhaus situation.
