Ravens Run Over Patriots 33-14

Prior to today's game, the thought was that if the Baltimore Ravens were going to have any chance to beat the New England Patriots, it would only happen if QB Joe Flacco  had a good game for them. Instead, Flacco barely contributed to the Ravens 33-14 victory as the team instead rushed for over 230 yards, led by Ray Rice's 160 yards and two scores, including the game opening 83 yard TD scamper. Flacco finished 4 of 10 for 34 yards, although he still had a couple of key completions and a huge first down run to set up the team's final touchdown.

Next the Ravens get to rest up for more post season football as they will travel up to face the Indianapolis Colts and try to exact the same type of revenge they sought and got today. After playing perhaps their most complete game of the season, much less in team history, this might be the biggest victory since the Super Bowl, as barely anyone other than The Beatdown predicted a Ravens victory in the local or national media.

So much more to follow but this is a great time to put down your post game thoughts and revel in a great statement to the rest of the league and especially the hopefully too well rested Indianapolis Colts. Great game RAVENS!

thank you

if it is any consolation, I would have loved to play the Steelers in the playoffs (and win, of course). As much as I like to win against the Steelers and as much as I hate them at times, I respect them as a team. The Patriots, not so much. They have the most overrated QB and coach duo ever.

by andykoctopus on Jan 11, 2010 11:54 AM EST up reply actions

Knocking on Flacco...

I love how they are negative about Flacco only throwing 10 times. Why the hell throw the ball if you average 4.3 yards a rush and basically just run over the Patriots even though they knew it was coming. Flacco made some good throws. D Will could have caught one. Mason had a big 3rd down catch. Whatever, the press always hate the Ravens.

by sam_ravens on Jan 11, 2010 4:42 AM EST up reply actions

Funny

I was with a bunch of people last night celebrating, and we were watching the Ray Rice interview and started counting the “you know”. Now that Rice is living with Lewis, he taught him that he has to have his own annoying catch phrase. Just would not be the right way to play for the Ravens without a Bottom Line or You Know.

The Ravens/Steelers rivalry is the best in the NFL. (Remember that post here not too long ago?) This game is what football is all about.

Ravens played all out kick-ass football today! Down and dirty, no mercy, smash-mouth AFC North football. THAT’S what makes our teams a forever threat in the playoffs; no matter what our regular season record is. When it’s playoff time…. fasten your seatbelt and get ready for a show.

Thank you, Ravens for not letting the North be defined by Cincy this year. Congrats and kick some Indy butt!

Hits

just kept coming.

Forget about the smothering defense or the, “Hey, Patsies, we are handing the ball to Rice and he is running between the left tackle and guard; good luck stopping it”… running game. The Ravens just out hit the Patsies from the first play onward. How many truly bone-crushing hits were there? Don’t know if y’all could see it, but Yanda just slapped the Patsies around like they were a bunch of petulant teen agers… At times it thought it was Ogden out there as he almost seemed bored on some of the plays.

by vlad755 on Jan 13, 2010 3:08 PM EST up reply actions

I mentioned Yanda in a comment somewhere on here

My Dad and I were focusing on Yanda alot during that game, and the man destroyed every defender in his way. If anyone goes back and watches some of our long runs, Yanda is usually the reason why those runs happened. He is a mean farm boy that these guys do not want to see. Love Yanda, I think he may even be as good, if not better than Grubbs. Yanda is a better Pull Guard than Grubbs, I know that much.

If you think for one second you guys are going to come to Indianapolis and Joe Flacco throw the ball 10 times for 34 yards and beat a Peyton Manning led offense… The Ravens are woefully kidding themselves…

by Justin Pugh on Jan 10, 2010 8:31 PM EST reply actions

Are you actually saying flacco can do better than that?

No way!

The way to win

Man, Ray Rice set the tone early in this one with that 83 yard TD run on the 1st play of the game. Love how we attacked on defense and I love that fact that we didn’t let up.

Watched game with some buddies - Pats fans in MA

They wanted to turn the game off in the 4th quarter. No way, I’ve heard enough from them in the past. The TV was on until the “bitter sweet end”. Fans booing the home team. The stadium turned purple at the end. How sweet is that?

by drj on Jan 10, 2010 8:40 PM EST reply actions

It was great

The way we came in and punched them in the mouth silenced the crowd from the get go. The almost the entire game was dead silence. Loved it.

The "Let's Go Ravens" chant

heard throughout te stadium reminded me of the Miami playoff game last year. Different city, same result. Keep it up next week just like we did in Tennessee last year as well!

I still got to watch the game....

I just got out of the Dallas area, just now got off the plane ride from hell, not 10 minutes after the drive from BWI. I got it Tivo’d. I was attempting to not notice as much as the game as possible (the Dallas airport had TV’s playing the game every 10 feet it seemed like). I couldn’t help but notice the entire waiting area for my flight cheering so I knew they won, but it wasn’t until I read this site that I learned how dominate it was. If it wasn’t for the fact that I am exhausted, I’d watch it now…oh well, I got something to look forward to tomorrow morning.

Also, everyone should try to visit the “Death Star” at least once in their life. Jerry Jones is an insane genius. I haven’t seen something like that stadium since I was last in Dubai.

Still on cloud 9

after that INCREDIBLE win and straight up BEATDOWN our team administered today! I knew the day would come…Let’s do it again next week! I have to say this is one of our sweetest wins of all time.

My brother travels to at least 2 away games every year. Said the Pats fans had the least class (he went to the 1st game up there this year too). Even Heinz field was better. The media and the rest of the nation pumped they’re heads up so much that they couldn’t handle it today.

What a great game, well played. Even Frank Walker (a head I wanted on a platter a several times this year). Go RAVENS!! Is it wrong to hope that Manning has a power tool accident this week?!!

Congratulations on the win.

The Bengals had a good year and exceeded my expectations but you guys hung in there and came thru in the end. I will be rooting for the Ravens as representatives for the AFCN and will now place my attention on how the Bengals can have another good off season and put some pieces in place to be more competitive next year. We had a team that was good enough to play strong as long as everything clicked but we just didn’t have the stamina to finish it off. I said at the beginning of the year that the Ravens were the team to beat and in the end that proved to be true. I can’t say that I am looking forward to all of the Bengal haters rubbing our noses in the loss and the plethora of disrespect that I am sure is on the way, but I am a Bengals fan. I am used to it. Again, congratulations and good luck the rest of the way.

JJ, I'm sure you'll agree

that the Bengals team at the end of the season wasn’t the same one that swept the Ravens and Steelers and neither was the Ravens at the end the same that lost so many close ones earlier. It’s all about how you finish in the NFL.

by Mr MaLoR on Jan 11, 2010 12:05 PM EST up reply actions

Our bad MaLor. We just couldn't get it done.

It looks like you were right about us all along. With all of our starters in place and healthy we were good enough to be very competitive. A lost player here and there and we fell to average as it all added up. No excuses though. That is football and it is a teams responsibility to not only have a good starting line up but to also have guys who can step in and play at a high level. We just didn’t have the horsepower to finish. Your team did their part and we simply failed in typical Bengal fashion. Even you die hard Raven fans must admit we are better if you care to you can find posts here on this site in the fall where I said that we were still another good off season away from being truly competitive.

Next year I will be back in your grill but now is the time for all Bengal fans to hold up their heads and be proud of a team that played hard and did some unexpected good things. But it is also time to be humble and recognize the truth. We are not there yet.

Your team was down and being counted out and rose from the ashes when their backs were against the wall. Did we deserve the AFCN title? Yea, we did. But you guys also deserve to be where you are and for the rest of the year I will be a Ravens fan. You should be very proud of your team. I know I am very proud of mine. I will be back next year and rooting for the Bengals to kick your butt again.

BTW The Jets play AFCN style football. Do not take them for granted.

by JUNGLEJOHN on Jan 12, 2010 8:49 AM EST up reply actions

Thanks for the love, JJ

True you wiped us all out in the regular season with a 6-0 division record. But it looks like your team blew its wad in mid season and limped to the finsih and couldn’t return to that form. Next year will be a war in the AFC North, as it will become the beast of the league once more. Look out for the AFC East and NFC South as they both have to play us which will hurt their Wild Card chances with three non-division games against us tough three.

But we’re not finished- yet.

Our chances for next year just improved.

We just signed Zimmer to a new 3 year deal. Maybe Mike Brown is starting to get it.

And Seriously

Just to add to Bruce’s comments, I honestly think the untimely death of Chris Henry really rattled the team. Even though he was on IR, it appeared that the Bengals just could not rally around that. Not that I blame them, an untimely death is a horrible, horrible thing to overcome.

Two point conversion????

Oh yeah, that was good. The tip of the ball clearly crossed the back portion of the goal line by about 4 inches. I have no idea why that nimrod official didn’ t see it in review when even the commentators could (…and NFL commentators/analysts are an even lower species of human life form than NFL referees!). Final score: 35-14.

I hope Hochili’s crew doesn’t have the Ravens game this weekend! Ugh!!!! Go Ravens!

You would think with all the cameras they use

they’d have one from the other side of the goal line, much less above it and behind it!

Easily good for 2 pts. How pissed would you have been it we ended up losing 34-33?

Is the NFL game too fast for Joe Flacco?

I think it might be. I can’t tell the difference between his 1st game with Baltimore or his last.

Interesting how the Ravens seem to send teams down long paths to mediocrity after pummeling them in the playoffs. They are a curse to many teams: Raiders, Titans, Miami, Denver, NE(?).

All of these teams spiraled into miserable stretches after the Ravens took them out in the Playoffs. Never More. IF there is any spirit that would come back to haunt it would be Edgar Allen Poes. I think he lurks the tunnels of M&T and travels with the team. 8-4 All time playoff record. 6-2 on the road…scary stuff for a QB-less franchise.

by raven on Jan 11, 2010 10:10 PM EST reply actions

What I've seen

is when we ask him to throw 40 times in a game, he gets into the rhythm. Unfortunately, that many throws usually results in some mistakes and even a bit of over confidence at times. Throwing only 10-20 times has him tentative, almost short arming and aiming too much, leading to throws being soft or sailing like we’ve seen. However, give me 50 carries and 200 yards rushing any day and keep the mistakes minimal and just hit a few key 3rd down passes and I’m fine with my 2nd year SB QB if so be it!

Still waiting to hear anyone from the national media to credit Ravens defense running game and coaching for the win

all of them seem to say Brady and Moss had bad games and Welker was hurt – so Patriots lost

Belichek and Brady actually were the only ones to credit the Ravens good play for the game’s outcome – kudos to them

He’s always open. He catches a lot of balls. He’s un-guardable, no matter how old he is
