Ravens Roster Cuts + Other Moves

Keep it here for the list of players being released or moved in other ways by the Baltimore Ravens as the team gets down to the maximum of 53 players by this afternoon's deadlines. So far, this is what we have heard:

Waived: Graham Gano, Justin Harper, Yamon Figurs, Evan Olglesby, Will Johnson, Jayson Foster, Jason Cook, Robby Felix, William VanDeSteeg have been waived.

Also waived with the announcement of the 53 man roster were: Nader Abdallah, Ernie Wheelwright, Eron Riley, K.J. Gerard, Tony Fein, Isaac Smolko, Tre Stallings, Stefan Rodgers, Cedric Peerman AND Devon Drew!

LB Jason Phillips has been placed on Injured Reserve, thereby ending his 2009 season but allows the Ravens to keep his rights and gives him his full salary. This is what I predicted in my earlier posting today.

Derrick Martin has been traded to the Green Bay Packers for what was thought be an undisclosed late round 2010 draft pick, but turned out to be offensive guard/tackle Tony Moll, who was added to the 53 man roster.

We will add more names as they are released by the team or when they list their final 53 players.

(See the first comment below for the full list of the 53 players on the Ravens roster, as posted, thank you very much, by Mr MaLoR.)

Reportedly, the tem is interested in adding a player or two and the names that have come up are former Jacksonville Jaguars (and Ravens) OT Tony Pashos and recently released NY Giant WR David Tyree

Peerman must be among the cuts

unless he was placed on IR or traded.

Updated Info

Now it appears that Martin was traded to the Packers for tackle/guard Tony Moll.

Damn, why couldn’t it have been Greg Jennings instead?

the Packers fans seem really down on Tony Moll. Man, they all wanted him cut from the team in their roster projections

So, what was the point of this trade……..?

Overloaded at DB

and need depth at o-line, where Moll started five games last season.

aka 'Rexx'

by Bruce Raffel on Sep 5, 2009 5:32 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Moll has started a bunch of games at Tackle, but the Packers fans don’t like him.

He’s undoubtedly and upgrade at backup tackle over Oniel Cousins.

by math_geek on Sep 5, 2009 5:34 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

the Packers fans don’t like him

which is undoubtedly why they traded him.

Sounds like they drafted a tackle and he won the spot over Moll on potential..

by adh on Sep 5, 2009 5:42 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

They probably don’t like to see him starting. We probably wouldn’t want him to start either.

…but any player that has started that many games and can play that many positions will make a great backup.

Happiest Guys?

While there has to be a sense of relief to veterans Prescott Burgess, Antwan Barnes, Kelly Talavou, Brandon McKinney, David Hale, Edgar Jones and Jalen Parmale, the two happiest guys in camp have to be:
1. Matt Lawrence, who came out of nowhere to earn a spot with his all around never-give-up, hard-working attitude that impressed the coaches.
2. Dannell Ellerbe, who didn’t even play in the final exhibition game and was even drafted by the team, yet made it through his good first impression during the early part of camp in Westminster.
Congrats to all on this list, but especially to Lawrence and Ellerbe, who did it the old fashioned way- they earned it!

Just rec'd Press Release from the Ravens

and they have Peerman as being released, but wait, they also have Davon Drew listed as released! I’ll let you know the clarification as soon as I do.

by Bruce Raffel on Sep 5, 2009 5:31 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Davon Drew might have been released to make space for Tony Noll.

What a wasted pick if that’s true.

by math_geek on Sep 5, 2009 5:34 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Yeah, it looks like that is the case, Noll does not show up as one of the 53 on the team site.

Now the Ravens site/roster is updated

without Drew and with Moll.

they kept your boy Edgar Jones at TE

i guess they’re just admitting the mistake in the draft and moving forward with the better option at TE. Sounded like the only reason to keep Drew would have been to save face anyway

Davon Drew - WAIVED!

Just heard it straight from the Ravens PR Dept. Both Drew and Peerman were released and BaltimoreRavens.com is corecting that on their site.

This is why you keep it here on The Beatdown, to get the news as soon as it is released and then get it confirmed by the team!

Not too shabby!

On roster: 1st, 2nd, 3rd picks.
On IR: 4th pick
Released: 5th, 7th
Not bad at all.

aka 'Rexx'

by Bruce Raffel on Sep 5, 2009 5:52 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

it’s pretty bad at the bottom, Phillips was a 5th round pick and Peerman was a 6th. All three late round picks not making the roster is pretty poor, especially by Ravens standards… but we’re a much deeper team than we used to be… we can’t stash players on our roster as much as we used to.

by math_geek on Sep 5, 2009 5:54 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I agree. I wonder… would this much depth make trading picks for proven players a smarter proposition?

Right about now… I’m wishing that Ozzie had traded our last three picks for a proven wide receiver.

by BAL_Hawk on Sep 6, 2009 12:16 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Keep wishing cause anytime we want a WR that WE want it will never happen. We will continue to pickup support players and live in a billick era of running game and defense while being scared to have a guy get 1200 yards and 10 touchdowns. If I had the power, boldin or Marshall would be wearing purple right now and NO ONE would be complaining.

You have to hate losing more than you love winning.

by Mr MaLoR on Sep 6, 2009 12:42 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

It’s definitely a fantasy if you think nobody would be complaining about Marshall being here. We could use some help at wide receiver, but no that badly.

Water covers 2/3 of the Earth's surface. Ed Reed covers the rest.

We get a guy like Marshall ore boldin and, and dis team is unbetable. you better beleive that.

You have to hate losing more than you love winning.

by Mr MaLoR on Sep 6, 2009 3:27 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

At what cost? Look at the Fan Shot video of Marshall’s practice. He’s walking during drills and batting down passes instead of catching them. Do you think that his attitude is magically going to change when he gets here and Ozzie’s not willing to pay him the top receiver dollar that he wants? Can Ray Lewis set him straight in the few years he has remaining here? Is it worth sacrificing the image that Harbaugh is building?

I personally don’t think the benefits of signing Marshall outweigh the costs. He’s a magnet for legal troubles that we don’t need, and I seriously doubt he’ll manage a complete 180 if he comes here, even assuming Ozzie would be willing to give up the bare minimum that’s needed for him to come here, or that the Broncos are even entertaining thoughts of trades.

On the other hand, I’d be all about Boldin coming here. But that’s a totally different subject.

Water covers 2/3 of the Earth's surface. Ed Reed covers the rest.

You and Anita Marks

Would trade us out of playoff contention. You want highlights, I want a championship. I’ll stick with our defense and a run-first offense anyday. After we win the SB in Feb., you’ll come aboard 100%.

aka 'Rexx'

by Bruce Raffel on Sep 6, 2009 10:18 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

if Dan Snyder were our owner

we would have traded for Marshall, given him his huge contract, and he’d be vindicated for his baby tactics and he’d be impossible form now on.

You have to understand what a crossroads Marshall is at now. THe only way for him and the Broncos to mature out of this is for Denver to sit on him and keep him in purgatory for as long as he acts this way. You can’t let him write his own ticket out of town.

If he gets the trade he’s wanted all along, he’ll look back at his punting video, trading barbs with McDaniels, and the whole episode in general as having been the right moves on his part. He’ll feel that he can behave that way as a means to an end at any organization he plays for. So no thanks, going after Marshall right now is completely out of consideration. Call me after the season is over and we’ll see if he’s matured by then. At this point he’s too volatile.

Think about SD with Cam as OC. I don’t remember then having any star WR’s. Same for most of Norv Turner’s (Cam’s mentor) teams.

by NFL Sage on Sep 6, 2009 2:26 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

But they had a TE who caught 12-15 TD’s every season and arguably the greatest RB to play over his first 8 seasons.

We have a good running game, but nothing like what LT was for Cam during that time. We have decent TE, but nothing like Gates was for Cam.

Give Cam a Marshall or Boldin, watch Flacco go nuts ALONG with still having a top 10 running game.

by Mr MaLoR on Sep 6, 2009 2:42 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Gates has only had at least 10 Td's twice

And never more then 13 in a season. He has had 10, 9, 9 and 8 the past four years.

by DT711 on Sep 7, 2009 10:30 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

that's not soo bad man

a lot of GMs keep players who get outperformed in camp because it looks embarrassing to release drafted rookies. But I’m glad the Ravens are all about quality however they can get it. If Jones is better than Drew, cut drew! It doesn’t matter if he was drafted, someone is better at his position so he gets cut. Same for Peerman—two other RBs off the street came in and outperformed him. Cut. Such is life.

The first 3 picks are great. But I saw so many players in round 5-7 that could have really helped our team out more than Drew and Peerman did.

Let's see who they sign to the Practice Squad

as I expect Drew to be there unless, which I doubt, he signs w/ another team.

And if we get Tyree, someone else has to go.

why tyree? why? WHY??

i mean it’s just a really underwhelming guy to sign. I guess they’ll sign someone though because we only have 4 WR right now.

Much happier with having quality 2nd and 3rd round players this year unlike many prior years.

Bet in prior years, Phillips and Peerman stay ; but we’re really building an high quality roster.

by Merlin11 on Sep 5, 2009 6:21 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

I had high hopes for Peerman because of his Speed Score… oh well.

We’ve been doing better in the 2nd and 3rd rounds as of late. Tavares Gooden, Ray Rice, and Marshall Yanda are all starters from those rounds.

by math_geek on Sep 5, 2009 6:29 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

why oh why

did they release justin harper, jayson foster, and yamon figurs i mean yamon was faster then ladarius and chris carr and justin harper made touchdowns and jayson goster showed good moves also that jason cook guy as well man thats sad i hope they add them to practice squard

by jazz20 on Sep 5, 2009 7:36 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Harper had 1 touchdown in all 4 games and dropped possibly 7-10 other TD’s or big time gains of yards. Not surprised. We gave him every chance to be a contributing WR for this team, and he could not even get it done against the other team’s 2nd and 3rd string defenders.

You have to hate losing more than you love winning.

by Mr MaLoR on Sep 5, 2009 8:21 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Wouldn't be surprised

if a bunch of those guys end up on our Practice Squad. They know our system and came close. Look, even Harper made progress and if he can learn to concentrate and catch those balls, he could be a pretty decent option. Foster was fast, as was Figurs, so they could come in and return kicks if needed, and Drew could learn to grow up and earn a second chance next season.

i know it was a forgone conclusion...

why not keep Eron Riley? he looked awesome on the those 2 catches in the final preseason game. Maybe im too excited by a tall guy who doesn’t drop half of the balls thrown his way.

I had feeling Drew would be cut, as well as Pearman

Regardless of them being picks. Pearman is a great guy and has all the physical tools but has never been able to put it all together, whether it was at UVA, or now, trying out for the NFL. I am pleasantly surprised that we kept both Parmele and Lawrence. Very glad Harper was cut. And while I’ll admit he has looked garbage in the preseason I had no doubt Walker would make the final roster and will play a role on this squad.

Well

rather than complaining about Frank Walker, like Ive done since we brought him in last year. Im going to accept the fact that he’s here, and he is indeed a Raven. He wants to win, thats a plus. He spit on a Steeler…thats a plus. And when it mattered most last season, he played Raven football, sure he had plenty dumb penalties. (He didnt lose the AFC Championship game for us, let us not forget Darren Stone, he should have been stoned…too death.) But with that said, I like Frank Walker for the fact he can come in a play physical (legal) coverage against a tight end, leaving Ed Reed with the freedom he desires. So thats my praise of frank Walker for the day, I guess if I do this everyday I’ll eventually like him more.

Peerman

Why the hell would they release peerman, he was a good running back, and he adds speed and power to our tunning back core… we have to much power for our backs and not that much speed… leron and willis, power. and ray isnt that speedy neither so peerman wouldve been great for the speed aspect on our team…. and why Parmele over peerman… wow

by Sly1stRoundDP on Sep 7, 2009 11:51 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

he was a good running back

Apparently he wasn’t as good as you thought. I guess Ozzie wasn’t very impressed by his performance in pre-season game four, much like the rest of us.

Water covers 2/3 of the Earth's surface. Ed Reed covers the rest.

by Ampallang on Sep 7, 2009 1:00 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Ray is definitely fast. He is nearly just as fast as Peerman and has way more strength and agility.

and why Parmele over peerman… wow

Well, Parmele has been with this team for 2 years now and been in the league for 3. He has proved himself more than Peerman has. Peerman saw barely any carries in the pre-season, and you know the reason for that? Because it all starts in practice and Parmele obviously did better throughout training camp then Peerman did. The coaches know what they are doing, and we do not.

You have to hate losing more than you love winning.
