Ravens 2008 Draft Picks
How good do you think our 2008 draft was???
This are our picks:
Rd Sel # Player Position
1 18 Joe Flacco QB - No question, really great pick. -A-
2 55 Ray Rice RB - Also a great pick, maybe our best 2nd rounder in years. -A-
3 71 Tavares Gooden OLB - Still hasnt play much, but he shows potential this preseason. -B-
3 86 Tom Zbikowski FS - I expect more from him, but he is not bad. -C-
3 99 Oniel Cousins T - I though he was Willie Anderson replacement when we draft him. Now he is a questionable backup -F-
4 106 Marcus Smith WR - Bad luck with his injury, but his rookie year was not impressive -D-
4 133 David Hale G - He can result a good backup, for a 4th round, I think is ok -B-
6 206 Haruki Nakamura FS - Really good backup, and maybe even someday starter. Great for a 6 round -A-
7 215 Justin Harper WR - Practice Squad first year, good training camp, inconsistent preseason. Ok for a 7th round -B-
7 240 Allen Patrick RB -Didnt make the team, he is now with the Browns -F-
What do you think?

I think i'd give Ziby a B atleast
Gr8 post though, only in they’re second year and people like Flacco, Rice, Gooden and the two safety’s look like they’re gonna have huge careers.. Gooden and Rice will be stars.. no question, flacco’s already there.
agreed
Zibby has been good, it’s not for his underperformance that Nakamura has sortof leapfrogged him on the depth chart—it’s just because Nakamura is that good. But I think Zbikowski will probably be sought after by other teams at some point and I certainly think he could be a capable starter in a scheme where his pass coverage responsibilities are limited at SS.

Not sure yet about Nakamura
To be honest I’m not sure where all the love for him comes from. Sure he’s a high motor guy thats always around the ball, which is a great start. But I really think I’ve seen him miss more plays than he makes. He missed alot of tackles last season that led to long YAC plays. At this point in their careers, Haruki is a worse tackler than Reed, which is saying alot.
They say the empty can rattles the most...
That said
If he can bulk up a bit and improve his tackling, he’s certainly got the instincts to be a solid player in the NFL.

Disagree
He is always around the ball and even Ray said he liked that. He didn’t miss many tackles and even rushed the QB off the edge with a sack or two last season. He is a starter on most other teams, as is his best friend on the team, Zbi.

"He is a starter on most other teams"
What do you base that on?

I believe Bruce
He gets the priviledge of hanging out at training camp, practice, etc. He interacts with everyone on the team including the coaches and most importantly, he studies every practice.
Nakamura made me upset one time that I can remember, we still won the game so its no big deal, but think back to the playoffs last season; last drive of the game for the Titans, Kerry Collins drops back and lets off a pass, it lands in Nakamuras hands, end of game! No, he dropped it, I just think that would have been awesome.
What do you guys think about Derrick Martin over Frank Walker?
Scott Hines
Both guys are hunters, as they always find the ball or the man with it.
They have great instincts and play well as a teammate. Too many teams are hurting in their secondaries and both these guys would be great additions. I think they’ll both be starting here (after Ed) or elsewhere at some point in the near future.

Dude!
That dropped pick was not his fault at all. If you go back and watch the play, the ball was coming in Nakamura’s direction, but our fearless leader Ray Lewis laid his body out and tipped the ball with his hand. This caused the ball to change direction very quickly and threw Nakamura off. But hey, we won it the very next play.

Are we arguing about a play
in a game we won? Dropped picks are part of the reason that most defensive backs are just WR’s who can’t catch! Hmm…perhaps Justin Harper should switch to DB!

You've seen him miss more because
that is what is easier to remember. If he makes a tackle, well, he was “supposed to”, and even if it was a good play, you still forget about it.
Rice
I was so pumped when the Ravens nabbed him. He flat out dominated at Rutgers. And the fact that he’s developed into a reliable pass-catcher is such a bonus. Definitely agree with the A

Actually I was disappointed with the pick
of a RB with our #2 pick back then. I thought we could have gotten someone like Steve slaton inthe 3rd round and used our #2 pick for an o-lineman who we needed real bad at the time. Had we gotten a decent OT at that time along w/ slaton, we wouldn’t be complaining now, but then again, I’m not.

Slaton does not really fit the system here.
Sure, he is fast and shifty, but definitely not as powerful as Rice is. Slaton is going to have a great career, but so will Rice.

When your top 3 picks shine, that’s a great draft. And something the Ravens have not been consistent at.
Looks like both 2008 and 2009 will have that flavor and consistency.
Ray Lewis, Jamal Lewis, Ogden, Sharper, Boulware, Ngata, Suggs, Flacco, McAlister?? and so on….

Merlin11 may have been talking about more recent history. Let’s take a look back about five draft classes, but with a couple of caveats. First, lets leave out the most recent draft; obviously, we need to see what they can do in the NFL before making a decision. Second, I’d like to leave out last year’s draft, because I’d really like to see them in their sophomore years before passing judgement on them. I know we all have very high hopes for Flacco, Rice, and Gooden, but their second year performance will be very telling. Honestly, each had a downside the past year. Flacco performed poorly in the post-season, although we’re all glad that a rookie QB took us as far as he did. Rice had some injury trouble that kept him from being a bigger part of our offense in the latter part of our season. And Gooden also suffered from injury, only playing in three games.
So, let’s take a look at draft classes 2003-2007.
In 2003, Suggs definitely carried the class. We just signed him to a hefty contract, he does yeoman’s work as a hybrid LB/DE, etc. And then there’s our other 2003 first round pick. Kyle Boller is a nice guy, but not much more can be said about him without resorting to vulgarity. He may end up as a starting quarterback somewhere, but he didn’t live up to his first round draft status here in Baltimore by any means. In the third round, we drafted Musa Smith. According to his wikipedia page, he has played “sparingly” in the NFL. He suffered an injury that kept him out nearly two seasons, and is a major reason why horse-collar tackles are now illegal. Suffice to say that he didn’t quite live up to potential.
2004 had just second and third round picks. Our second round selection was Dwan Edwards. In 2007 (his best statistical year), he recorded one sack while filling in for the injured Trevor Pryce. At best, he is a solid backup to our usual starters, and is not expected to become a starter for us in the future. We drafted Devard Darling in the third round, who recorded 331 yards over four years. 326 of those yards came in his last year in Baltimore, and he still ended up in Kansas City.
2005 is a year of unmet expectations. Mark Clayton, picked in the first round, has shown flashes of potential, but has mostly had mediocre seasons. He nearly broke the century mark in his sophomore season, but has been inconsistent in other years, averaging 566 yards in those seasons. Dan Cody was selected in the second round this year. Again, hopes were high, but he never overcame strings of injuries, and was released before the 2008 season. Finally, Adam Terry was selected in the second round. He is another early-drafted lineman to be relegated to backup status.
2006 was an ok year, although is much affected by the first round pick. Ngata carries this class. He was our first round pick and has been stellar as part of our defensive line since joining the team. After him, we picked Chris Chester in round two. Chester was at one point thought to be the future at center, but has been relegated to a backup center/guard. David Pittman was our third round pick in 2006. He didn’t play his first year, then had one good game against Pittsburgh his sophomore year (seven tackles, three passes defensed, two interceptions), but played very lackluster football the remainder of the year.
2007 is probably the best overall draft of the bunch. Ben Grubbs was selected in the first round and has been a solid part of the left side of our offensive line since he was drafted. Marshal Yanda was selected in the third round and has been a solid contributer to the offensive line when he hasn’t been sidelined with injuries. The only weak spot in the top three of this draft class is Figurs, also selected in the third round. He was productive on special teams in his first year, but failed to impress last year. Many are surprised to see him make the team in 2009.
In summation, we have Grubbs, Yanda, Ngata, and Suggs who are now major contributors to the team. We have relatively disappointing backups in Figurs, Chester, Clayton (not really a backup, but still relatively disappointing for a first-rounder at this point), Terry, and Dwan Edwards. And we have total losses in Pittman, Cody, Darling, Boller, and Musa Smith. For those of you keeping track at home, that’s about a 29% success rate with our first-through-third rounders from 2003 through 2007, which I believe to be the most reliable five year span to judge in recent memory.
I guess what I’m saying is that Merlin11 has a point in that we haven’t had solid and consistent selections in the top of the draft recently. Here’s to 2008 and 2009 breaking the recent trend.

Allen Patrick only lasted a week with us.

How is Ray Rice an A? That would have to mean he was outstanding.

Before his second season with us has officially started, he’s listed as our starting running back ahead of former Pro Bowlers Willis McGahee and Le’Ron McClain (now our fullback). Sounds like an “A” to me.
I know it must be weird to see a fan show a little love to one of his running backs. I mean, just look at the Browns depth chart. You picked up Jamal Lewis after we ran off his wheels and cut him from the team. Before Saturday, I heard rumors that he might not even make the team. Behind him you have a late round draft pick that couldn’t make the Ravens roster ahead of an undrafted free agent, and another guy with one start in three seasons and a career record of 246 yards in one year. It must be like having three ugly babies. The parents (aka, the Browns fans) pretend to love them because it’s their job to do so, but everybody knows the truth.

Take James Davus for your fantasy team
as he should be starting by the 2nd half of the season there.
