Answers to your Chargers Questions

Hey fellas.  My name is John and I run Bolts From The Blue, SB Nation's blog for Chargers fans.  I'd like to extend my Chargers expertise to help answer any questions you guys have about the Chargers leading up to Sunday's game.

Some notes about me as they relate to the Ravens:

  • "The Raven" is one of my favorite poems ever, but even I'm a little confused as to why an NFL team is named after it.
  • I would like the Ravens a lot more if purple wasn't so prominently involved in their color scheme.
  • I have read and done book reviews on BFTB for The Blind Side and Next Man Up.  After reading Next Man Up I became very jealous, both because the Chargers do not have a decent book written about them and because the Ravens organization as a whole (Owner, GM, Billick) seemed incredibly-well put together.
  • Although I'm a Chargers fans, I currently live in Philadelphia.  The Harbaugh hiring was brilliant, and there's only a handful of teams in the league that would've had the balls to take a chance on hiring a Special Teams coach.
  • Some Chargers fans are completely convinced that Lorenzo Neal was the sole reason the Ravens were such a good running team in 2008 and why the Chargers couldn't run the ball in 2008.  They're wrong, but it's what they think.
  • My brother-in-law is a big Rutgers fan and got me watching Ray Rice in his freshman season.  Not only does that kid have a great head on his shoulders and a fantastic work ethic, he's very smart and very strong for his size.  On a team with a smaller offensive line he might struggle, but in Baltimore he's a beast.
  • I'm convinced that Flacco is the second best young QB in the NFL, right behind Philip Rivers.  Trust me when I tell you that's a compliment.
  • I'm dumbfounded as to why Chris McAlister doesn't have a job.  Perhaps you guys can enlighten me.

Alright, had enough of me?  Have I reached the word-count limit?  I'm sure I have.  Anyways, fire away with any Chargers questions you have in the comments section and I'll make sure to answer them to the best of my ability.  Also, please Rec this FanPost to keep it near the top of the home page through the weekend.

The opinions posted here are those of the administrator of this blog and his loyal readers. They are in no way official comments from the team, and should not be misconstued as such, even though he thinks he could do just as well or even a better job!

. . . is gone because his knee is shot and he can be a head case. For a few years there you could count on him for an INT in every other game or so but he’s done for a good.

Welcome to The Beatdown, John!

It’s Bruce, leader of Baltimore Beatdown and ironically I just posted a similar FanPost over at your site as well!

We’re sure to have a lot of banter between now and Monday, as both teams are looking to stay atop their divisions on their ways to another post season appearance. We should pose a tougher contest than the Raider did, although they pushed you guys all around Oakland Coliseum Monday night.

Why is C-Mac still unemployed you ask? He is a clubhouse cancer to management and even with his skills, his attitude and questionable health is obviously just not worth it.

How is LT doing and will he be ready. What about your defense, w/ Luis Castillo? How come you couldn’t stop the Raiders!? What’s Merriman’s story with Tila and his return from injury. Why didn’t Shaun Phillips do anything for my Fantasy team, which has defensive player stats (sacks, INT’s)?

See you all week here and over at Bolts From The Blue!

How is LT doing and will he be ready.
No idea. He rolled his ankle and said it was fine, but then got tight on him at the end of the game. They’re saying he’s a gameday decision, but knowing his history of playing through injuries I’m willing to bet he’ll be out there on Sunday (although maybe in a reduced role).

What about your defense, w/ Luis Castillo?

Castillo is always hurt, but it’s especially worrisome because Jacques Cesaire has been hurt since the second day of camp and they’re expecting him to start at the other DE spot. The Chargers defensive line is a major question mark right now, especially with the depth being so young (Nwagbuo and Martin). The initial plan of having Castillo/Williams/Cesaire starting and Ryon Bingham (now on IR) backing them up is not exactly working out.

How come you couldn’t stop the Raiders!?
Because, number one, that is one tough team. That’s a punch-you-in-the-mouth, Bill Parcells-like team. If Russell can ever hit a receiver with a football, they’ll be really dangerous. Also, the injuries on the defensive line had a lot to do with it.

What’s Merriman’s story with Tila and his return from injury.
Tila story is over. No chargers filed, no charges going to be filed. Shawne and the San Diego DA basically called her out on lying 5 different times before it became obvious that she was just doing it for PR for her new website. His knee is not quite as good. Although it is healthy and feels fine, Shawne has to get back in football shape with his body and then the knee needs to catch up. Against the Raiders, he was dragging the leg and was handled easily by the Raiders LT (he used to beat double-teams). I think he’ll be good in the second half of the season, but won’t be his typical self against Baltimore.

Why didn’t Shaun Phillips do anything for my Fantasy team, which has defensive player stats (sacks, INT’s)?
Because Shaun was getting a lot of double-teams. As Merriman and English get better (English looked lost against Oakland), that will clear up room for Shaun. He’ll get his numbers and he’s a big threat for INTs this season.

Thanks for joining us John.

Brsides Philip Rivers, do you think that Darren Sproles is your best offensive weapon? In my opinion, he is the reason your offense moves whenever he is in the game.

I think him catching the screen pass is one of the hardest things to defend in this league because of his agility and incredible speed burst.

Also, how would you suggest the Ravens defense try and stop Sproles from having a huge game?

You have to hate losing more than you love winning.

by Mr MaLoR on Sep 16, 2009 10:32 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

I’d rank the Chargers offensive weapons like this:

1. Rivers
2. Gates
3. Vincent Jackson
4. Darren Sproles

Gates keeps the coverage in the “middle” range, which opens room for VJ to stretch the defense deep. When both of those guys are healthy and Rivers gets time in the pocket, the Chargers are unbeatable.

The Chargers ran zero screen passes to Darren Sproles against Oakland. Chargers fans are just as clueless as to why this happened as I’m sure you are. He’s very effective in just about everything he does (kick returns, punt returns, screens, WR routes, running the ball outside or inside), and can certainly dominate a game if he’s not accounted for when he’s on the field. I hate to say it, but there’s no way to stop Darren without injuring him. No defense is going to stop him on a screen pass. My suggestion would be for the defense to keep their eye on him and win the battle at the line of scrimmage. If they see the screen developing, they can stop it.

I knew that

I was just saying that it’s kindof odd to name a football team after a poem. By this logic, the Eagles should be the Philadelphia Franklins and the Chargers should be the San Diego Blink 182s.

Then again, I guess it’s right in line with naming your team after the head coach.

Wouldn’t that make us the Baltimore “Poe’s”?

Maybe the Philadelphia “Declarations of Independence.” or San Diego “Insert Crappy Blink 182 Song” work better?

I believe

it also has something to do with the fact that Bmore was already a bird town (with the O’s that is). The mix of the existing Baltimore Orioles and history of Edgar Allen Poe made the Raven a perfect fit for monicker.

And personally I think its one of the better names for a team. Not just some random name with no meaning behind it..

by daveh873 on Sep 18, 2009 9:06 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

It is a great, unique name

Thank the lord that we voted the “Ravens” as the name. The other options were so pathetic… The Americans?, The Marauders?… You kidding me?

In 1995, the Cleveland Browns announced that they were moving their franchise to Baltimore. Baltimore had a new pro football team. Now all it needed was a new pro football name. But what? Long ago, fans had named the Colts after the horse racing industry in the Baltimore area. What Baltimore person, place, or thing would best represent this new Baltimore team?

That question was put to the fans. Baltimore had boats, Baltimore had hard-working, patriotic citizens, Baltimore had…Edgar Allan Poe and his famous poem, “The Raven.” In early 1996, the Baltimore Sun newspaper conducted a telephone poll. They asked people to cast their vote for the team name. Over 33,000 people voted. About 5,500 people chose the Marauders. A similar number (5,597) picked the Americans. And 21,108 selected the winner: the Baltimore Ravens.

Now Baltimore fans join the three Raven mascots — Edgar, Allan, and Poe — in cheering their players to victory. The dark days of being a teamless town, an NFL nobody, are behind them, they hope, forever more.

I recently moved to Philly. Do you know of any Ravens bars?
I do not, but the bars that I frequent are kindof unbiased instead of being Eagles bars. Fox & Hound on 15th and Spruce is a good one, lots of TVs. The Bards around 21st & Walnut has the best Guinness in Philly, and is generally quiet, but the tvs are small and I think there’s only 2.

Why do Colts fans call Rivers "Marmalard?"
It’s something that Big Daddy Drew from Kissing Suzy Kolber made up. It started in 2007, when everybody thought Rivers’ trash-talking was over-the-top and his throws had no power to them (having no knee ligaments will do that). I have no idea where he came up with the nickname, and the whole bit is a bit played out (I think Drew himself would admit this), but that’s where it came from.

Is LT donezo?
That’s not a real word. And yes, as far as being a top 5 back in the NFL, he is. He is still serviceable however, because he still has good moves, good speed and great vision. Whereas two seasons ago he was Barry Sanders or Gale Sayers, at this point he’s more like Fred Taylor. Not bad, but now what he once was.

How about them injuries?
They suck. The Raiders beat the crap out of our offensive line. I had no idea a defense that wasn’t in Baltimore or Pittsburgh could be so violent. One of the commenters at BFTB said it best, right when the game ended, when they said “Can we have our bye week next week? Please?”

Scott?

I can’t believe you think that the difference between winning that game was the early Bye? Perhaps the consistency actually helped us? It certainly hurt the other temas that had “normal” byes, as they might be saying they would have made the AFCCG if they had the early Bye like we did!

Can look at it either way

That we got on a roll and the consistency helped us….or

We wore out from the lack of a bye and just had nothing left in the tank.

The answer is probably somewhere in the middle.

but there can be no question

a bye week in the playoffs would have been huge to allow guys to heal. A good coaching staff won’t let a bye week disrupt a team’s consistency.

Vincent Jackson

Is he the top wideout?

How has he fared against some of the leagues smaller defensive backs?

They say the empty can rattles the most...

by Massacre on Sep 16, 2009 11:05 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Yes and he has crushed them without mercy. I’m pretty sure he stole Ronde Barber’s shoes at the end of the game against TB last year just to further the embarrassment.

Vincent is 6’5" and built like a MAC truck. He can also run like a cheetah and jump out of the gym. VJ was a project pick (the Chargers drafted him out of Div I-AA Northern Arizona) because he couldn’t run routes and had a problem with not looking the ball into his hands. He still occasionally drops the easy ones, but for the most part he’s solid with his hands. His route-running seems to get better every game.

If Rivers didn’t love spreading the ball out to anybody who is open, VJ would be mentioned along with Moss and whoever else is the top WRs in football today.

Similar to Merriman, VJ is an RFA if there is no new CBA in place before free agency and a UFA if there is a new CBA in place.

He’s had 2 DUIs, but is in the process of fighting the second one in court.

Agreed

I am actually a Crabtree fan (Didn’t want to be the first to bring it up, but now that you opened this can of worms). While I do think he has handled this situation poorly, I do not fault him for feeling like he deserves more money then DHB. He had 10x the college career of Bey, and this is coming from a UMD alum and Hey-Bey supporter since day one in College Park. He should realize hes fighting a battle he can’t win, and sign in SF, but I’d be very happy to trade our #1 next year, for Crabtree now. We would be stealing Crabtree, since our pick is going to be very late in the 1st rd. If he wouldn’t have gotten hurt last year, he would have been a top 5 pick easily.

I don’t know if I’d trade next year’s first round pick to have him this year… unless they had Crabtree to agree to terms before hand. If that were possible, he would be playing already. Crabtree needs to either take the deal on the table from San Fransisco or sit out till next year. If he does the latter, I believe that he will learn a seriously hard lesson. If he learns from it, it would make sense to draft him late in the first round next year.

A trade just doesn’t make sense for this season. His big head hasn’t been popped yet. When it does, he will be a very, very good football player. Unfortunately, it may take an entire off season of uncertainty and TONS of lost money.

Well, I’ll agree with the points below that he’s still not in the same category as Brady and Peyton Manning because he is yet to win a Super Bowl. Why he’s not mentioned along with Brees, I have no idea. My best guess is because the media generally ignores San Diego when they’re not picking them to win the Super Bowl.

Lots of passes does not make you a better QB. Let’s compare stats from 2008.

Rivers: 312-478 (65.3% comp.)
Brees: 413-635 (65% comp.)

Rivers: 34 TD, 11 INT
Brees: 34 TD, 17 INT

Rivers: 8.4 Yards Per Attempt, 12.8 Yards Per Catch
Rivers: 8.0 Yards Per Attempt, 12.3 Yards Per Catch

I don’t know about you guys, but I’d take the QB that had the same amount of TDs in 157 less attempts. The one who also happens to be more accurate and get more yardage every time he throws the ball.

Even if you think they’re equal, and it’d be close if not for the disproportionate amount of throws by Brees, it’s absurd that Rivers didn’t make the Pro Bowl and isn’t even considered the 2nd best QB from 2008. Just like Brees, the Chargers defense was the reason the team went 8-8.

If I had to sit down and argue about it anyway

I’d tell you why I think Big Ben was the best QB in the league last year, but that has been argued to death.

You can make the argument either way about who was the best last year, but to say “He was far and away the best QB in the NFL last year” is just wrong. None of his statistics are that far separated from Brees. That was what I was disagreeing with.

Technically

Ben was the best in the league last year. Had some pretty awful stats compared to Rivers and Brees, but has the ring, which neither Brees or Rivers has.

The defense helped a little bit as well.

The point I was making was that he had essentially the same stats as Brees (although 6 less picks and 1000 less yards) with a lot less pass attempts. Although Brees almost broke a bunch of records, part of the reason for that was because he threw so much more than anybody else. If Rivers had thrown that much he would’ve had at least 40 TDs.

by John (obviousman) on Sep 16, 2009 4:28 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

"what if"

That is circumstantial. Because if the bolts had indeed thrown more there is no way to prove his stats would continue along the same trend line. One reason Rivers has a lot of leeway in passing is because of your team’s balance between run and throw. If you take more throws a game, the defense does not have to be as honest to the run and can drop more people into coverage. So Rivers stats could have possibly gone done just as likely as they could have improved with more pass attempts.

My argument is that Brees and Rivers both had great years last year, and neither is clearly a head above the other.

Inside the NFL

Sapp, Collinsworth and Simms all picked their top three QB’s after Manning and Brady. Out of nine votes the breakdown was…

Brees – 3 votes
Romo – 2 votes
McNabb – 2 votes
Ben – 1 vote
Rogers – 1 vote

Rivers received no votes. Just throwing their opinion out there…

by DT711 on Sep 17, 2009 12:49 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

First of all, their opinions mean nothing to me. What matters to me is that Rivers finished 2008 with a 105.5 QB rating, highest in the NFL (Brees was 96.2).

Secondly, part of my argument was that Rivers goes underappreciated in San Diego. It’s a quiet city on the west coast and there’s really only one newspaper that covers the team. It’s easy to forget about him.

Evaluating the "next level"

I think after another year of evaluating, we might be talking about a new group of top tier quarterbacks.

We’re always quick to want to put labels on who’s “next” but the fact is Manning and Brady have been to the top of the mountain and put up MVP seasons year after year.

I think the 2008 season was the first season where he put the offense on his shoulders, and despite all signs pointing to a return to the run, I’m starting to think we’re going to see another year of Rivers gun-slinging.

As far as that next tier, I think Roethlisberger, Brees and Rivers are all right there, all with the potential to join that next group with another solid year. The only thing that was holding Brees back, up until last year, was consistency.

After that, I still believe Palmer if or when healthy has the potential to be in that top echleon, but after that, of all the younger QBs, I think Joe Flacco and Matt Ryan are going to be that next wave.

All signs point to Vasquez being able to go, but he’s still a rookie who doesn’t know how to run-block. I think he was fine by the end of the game, they just didn’t want to risk it. Hardwick is in a boot, but they’re saying he’s a game-time decision. I am very concerned about the possibility of having our backup Center (who is actually a Guard) going up against Ngata.

by Mr MaLoR on Sep 16, 2009 2:12 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Let’s just say I’m not excited about it. Even if they do manage to get pressure, the Chargers have always had problems with QBs that can get out of the pocket and run. It seems the only ones we really excel against are near-statues (Brady, Manning, Favre, Russell, Cutler). After the Raiders game, Chargers fans are most worried about the health/performance of the offensive line and the lack of pass-rush from the defense (1 sack, by the backup DT). There are a lot of people who will be eyeing Oher as the guy the Bolts should’ve taken in the first round.

English is a backup, but gets rotated in. The starting pass-rushing OLBs are Shawne Merriman and Shaun Phillips.

The Chargers were embarrassed in the trenches by Oakland, and they’re not starting this game off in better shape. However, Jacques Cesaire is practicing so that could certainly help our defensive line.

From what I’ve seen from Baltimore’s offensive and defensive lines in the past year or so, I honestly don’t know that the Chargers stand a chance of winning either battle with pure strength. They’re going to have to get creative.

Well, I’ll agree with the points below that he’s still not in the same category as Brady and Peyton Manning because he is yet to win a Super Bowl. Yes

Rivers’ 2008 campaign was statistically better than any season that Fouts had. And you can’t exclaim “different eras!” because Fouts played on a team that threw like crazy. As a matter of fact, Rivers was better than Fouts with 130 less attempts than him. And that was only his third season of starting.

You’ll notice that one of the things I said would get Philip to that place would be a Super Bowl victory, which Fouts never had. If he could put up better stats than Fouts over his career and toss in a Super Bowl victory, he’d be leaps and bounds ahead of Dan “The Man”.

I don’t know about you guys, but when I play football with my buddies (or at least before we got old and fat from watching too much football) I talk-trash. I make jokes. I generally play it up when I make a big play. Philip himself has come out and says that’s all he was doing, but he has made an effort to be more professional when on the field.

For the record, Philip has ever really publicly “taunted” or cried or whatever three times:

1. After a week of Cutler saying the Broncos were better in 2007, Rivers and Shaun Philips mocked Cutler in the 4th quarter of a Chargers blowout.

2. After coming out of the game with a knee injury, Philip talked trash to Colts fans during a game-winning Chargers drive in the 2007 playoffs by saying “There’s no way we don’t score and win this game.”

3. On Monday against the Raiders he was flagged for taunting (for the first time) after he yelled at a Raiders lineman who went for his knees on a false-start.

The biggest problem San Diego faces as a sports city is that a large majority of the population moves there instead of growing up there, and are therefore fans of other out-of-town teams. For the past few years, the Chargers have come dangerously close to not selling out a lot of their home games for this reason. The argument that there’s better things to do in SD is just silly. I think the economy has pushed a couple thousand people away that would’ve normally bought tickets, so the Chargers go from “dangerously close to not selling out some games” to “probably not going to sell out most games”.

Ravens Keys to the Game

Sorry to steal your thunder (no pun), John, but I’ve been itching to get some feedback on these.

1. Hit Sproles early and often. He’s a resilient player, and he runs like a deer, but at the end of the day he’s still 5’6". Tomlinson, though aging and somewhat battered (already) is still a dominant rusher, but taking Sproles out of the game is like stealing Tiny Tim’s crutch.

2. Keep the OLBs honest. The Bolts were mauled by a weak Raiders offensive line, and when Philips and Merriman had to come inside to help defend the run they failed to generate the typically solid pressure. Los Cargadores got really lucky that Cable didn’t call much (any) play-action.

3. Prevent D. Rivers has come along nicely when it comes to throwing in a phone booth, and given time he turns in performances that could qualify him as best in the league. Our fast, tall WR’s can light up just about anyone in man coverage, but seem to struggle against zone at times.

4. Pick on Clinton Hart He’s easily the most vulnerable player in the secondary; slowest, not a great hitter (certainly less so than Jammer and even Weddle), and gives up entirely at times.

5. Hope to God that Norv keeps his cards close to his chest. That’s the theory that has been floated over on BFTB: that Norv is waiting until the most opportune moment to unleash his tricky playcalling. Last Sunday, however, this meant a draw on 3rd-and-30 with Darren Sproles…. Norv isn’t terribly inspired when he isn’t pulling an ace from his sleeve.

Not that I’m buying into the theory, but nobody in their right mind calls their best play on 3rd and 30. You have literally zero chance of converting the first down. Just call the play that offers the least amount of risk and a chance at picking up a few yards. I would’ve called for slants over the middle.

as for keys to the game

i would add in “establish the Run.”

It’s what we do best and with your question marks on D-Line, as well as your Linebackers seeming to re-learn their positions against Oakland, I’d say we need to pound that rock and throw blockers at every blue jersey we see. I want Merriman to be fighting through a mass of blockers just to get inside at Ray Rice on a 2nd and 6 running play.

If the Ravens establish the run and get an early lead, we may be the hardest team to play against. If we can’t do that, it’s a different game entirely.

Unless Flacco is even better than we think he is.

Now, Rice/McGahee are no LT and Heap is no Gates, but the style of offense is nearly identical and Cam could definitely make some things happen. He has, did, and will make this offense better.

But with Norv, he knows what Cam is going to bring in a sense. So he will have his defense ready. Gonna be a grind out type game.

now that i’ve ruined this thread…a question for SD guy-

are there rumblings in SD about Merriman’s and LT’s performance? is there much Sproles over LT talk?

by raven on Sep 17, 2009 6:46 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Sure there’s rumblings. Every football team has fans that overreact or flat don’t know what they’re talking about.

The Chargers have made it very clear, Sproles will never be a feature back in San Diego. They just don’t think he’s capable of it. There’s talk of him being a better weapon, but not a better running back. There is the possibility that Michael Bennett could start in place of LT, and considering how good Bennett was in the preseason a lot of people expect him to be better than LT.

Merriman is what he is at this point. If he’s ever going to return to his form as one of the top pass-rushers in the NFL, it’s not going to happen in week 2. His knee is still not 100%, and he needs to get back into football shape. If you ask me, he’s got a little too much bulk and not enough flexibility after spending the last year in the gym. Just my opinion though.

by John (obviousman) on Sep 17, 2009 7:43 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

So that answers this question
If LT can’t go and Sproles was the featured back, would he still return kicks and punts? That would be a ton of wear and tear on him.

So your saying that even with LT out, Bennett will get a solid share of the workload to allow Sproles to be a major factor in the return game without getting too worn down on offense, correct?

by DT711 on Sep 18, 2009 11:59 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Yes

Hell, it may even be just to keep him ready for next week’s game. I remember going into the Steelers game last season, where he was to be the feature back, he was still talking about how exhausted he was from the Colts game.

If LT can’t go, Bennett will get more carries than Sproles.

Thanks

How has Bennett looked thus far? Still have blazing speed? I remember he ran something like a 4.2 at the combine way back when.

by DT711 on Sep 18, 2009 6:19 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Wow

Just looked it up and he ran a 4.13 forty at his pro day in 2001.

Bennett, at 207 lb (94 kg)., ran a 4.28s1 40 yard dash, but had a hurt hamstring, so he reran his 40yard dash at his pro day and got a record setting 4.13, and logged 13 reps of 225 lb (102 kg), and had a vertical jump of 39 1/2" at the 2001 NFL Combine. 2

by DT711 on Sep 18, 2009 6:20 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Yeah he was real fast

but never developed that true “football” speed that would make him successful, and now has lost a step, although he did do well in pre season according to the Chargers.

by Bruce Raffel on Sep 19, 2009 10:09 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

VERY well

He had one really good year with the Vikings, making it to the Pro Bowl in 2002. However, after that he struggled to stay healthy and didn’t really trust his line. What we saw in the preseason was a smart veteran who was patient, trusted his line and had fantastic speed when he needed it. He also looked about as healthy as I’ve ever seen him, after not getting much work the past few seasons.

If he has to go, I won’t be too worried about it.

He has to trust it. It’s his only chance to make a statement to the rest of the NFL that he’s good enough to be a starter. If he spends all day trying to run to the sidelines he’ll kill the team and himself. He knows that.

I'm reminded of a quote from Arthur Ashe:

“Martina Navaratilova is exactly like the old Green Bay Packers. You know exactly what she’s going to do, but there isn’t a thing you can do about it.”

So too are the Chargers when they set up blocking on screens with Sproles. If they can get Hester and the big uglies in positions and they set their blocks, Sproles will generally turn that into an excellent gain.

The only way to stop a screen pass is to sniff it out and have all of your defensive front seven run towards it before the ball is thrown. Luckily, about 3-4 years ago, teams that liked to run screens figured out that the WRs should be running routes in case this happens. So you’re left with either Sproles getting the ball with good blocker or Rivers getting a ton of time and no pressure in his face. Either way, it’s a win.

Hey, thanks wiseass

It probably had something to do with the 31st ranked passing defense or the 25th ranked overall defense that couldn’t get any pressure on opposing quarterbacks.

It also had to do with our stubborn coach trying to force the running game every week when it just wasn’t there and getting the team behind in every game that way.

I'm sure you guys get sick of hearing this seemingly every year...

But is Norv Turner on the hot seat? Granted, y’all made it to the playoffs last year, but only with an 8-8 record and the Broncos imploding. What is expected from fans in San Diego in regards to silencing his critics.

Meh

Isn’t everybody on the hot seat? If the Ravens went 2-14, wouldn’t they consider a coaching change?

If the Chargers win the AFC West and win at least one playoff game, as they’ve reliably done for two years, they will keep him.

Last year was actually a good year for Norv as a head coach. The same way Belichick got credit for getting 10 wins without Brady, Turner should get credit for getting 8 wins without Merriman or a semblance of a pass rush. Also, LT was injured all season and Rivers was returning from knee surgery (just like Brady, except you never heard about it).

Look, Norv was hired to win playoff games and he’s done that. That’s a step past where Marty Schottenheimer was able to get. If you look at the past two seasons, the Chargers have had unbelievably bad luck when it comes to health in the playoffs. If you can find a way to attribute that to Norv, I guess he’s a bad coach, but I actually think he’s a very good coach who made some bad decisions (taking jobs with Washington and Oakland) and has had some bad luck.

Since people love to pile on, Norv will always have critics until he wins a Super Bowl. Even then, he’ll still have some that say he’s a bad coach and anyone could’ve won with that team, etc. etc. People love to hate on Norval.

Noone getting burn’t, noone doing the embarrassing burning. Dont get me wrong, Reggie Wayne has all the talent in the world and he will deliver…but we may have figured it out. Or the losing parts of the equation left…but either way Im happy.

C-Mac might reappear in Oakland

according to rumors.
Asamohga and C-Mac, in their primes, would be a tough CB duo! However, C-Mac nowhere near his prime and would love to see Mason or Clayton burn him on the pump fake when we go there the last week of this season!

I agree that

The Ravens would be better without purple and Chris McAllister should have a job. The Raven is an all black bird, so obviously we needed a secondary color, but I would much prefer a dark, midnight blue to the purple. Not that purple doesn’t go with the Ravens theme, I just would prefer a midnight blue and think it would go even better. Oh well, too late to change it anyway.

We got rid of McAllister because he was a cap casualty and had lost a step and couldn’t stay healthy, but I definitely think there are teams out there that should have picked him up.

The Ravens would be better without purple…

That’s blasphemous, sir, and I’ll thank you to recant your statement.

We got rid of McAllister because he was a cap casualty and had lost a step and couldn’t stay healthy…

We ditched C-Mac because he wasn’t buying into Harbaugh’s system. A good question would be how good a player would have to be for Harbaugh to overlook a problem like that. At that point in his career, McAlister definitely wasn’t. I wonder if Harbaugh would even consider it at all, regardless of a player’s skill.

The only uniform that I’ve never really liked was the white-on-white. I glad that they switched to the black pants on the “away” uniform. Overall, I love the uniforms. I also like the new black jerseys on the white pants, but the black-on-black uniforms are the coolest. I’m happy that they won’t wear them in the heat though.
