Thoughts on last night's game... from a Ravens perspective.

Hey folks. It took me forever to figure where Rexx went. But it's nice to be back on here talking about the Ravens. I had to get away for awhile after that trip to Pittsburgh. (About 8 months...)

OK.. So did anyone else feel like deja vu last night watching the Titans play defense. When Pittsburgh came to town last year, we did the same exact thing. Rush 4 (a tired 4) drop back and cover. Arizona also did that as well. It is very simple in my opinion. Cover all you want but you cannot give Ben 7-10 seconds to throw a football.

Tennessee was dominating all game on DE except on the drive at the end of the half and then completely switched gears into a passive cover team. I understand that the Steelers went no huddle, but that doesnt mean you have rush only 4.

Thoughts?

See you Sunday, Im in section 150 this week. Bruce (Rex), I may try to make it over to your tailgate if you dont mind.

Bironas makes one of the kicks

And there is a different outcome.

I can’t wait until our front seven gets another shot at the Steeler’s O-Line. No way they run on us with that group, so it will again come down to if we can contain Ben. With speedier CB’s this season, hopefully they will cover an extra second or two to allow Suggs and Co. to get Ben to the ground.

I don't think our intentions will be to run on you

It appears the tides are turning in Pittsburgh and we have become a pass-first team with our impressive depth at WR. For your sake, I hope you have very fast corners.

We do, but who is the impressive depth

Gotta love Ward and Holmes, even Miller at TE, but Sweed? Wallace is okay but “impressive depth?” Doubtful.

Yes, impressive depth

Ward and Holmes are stars. Miller is a top 5 TE (considering blocking too). Wallace is fast, very fast, and showed great route running last night which was thought to be his big weakness. And a rookie catching a 22-yard pass in OT on an adjusted broken-play route? Impressive. Sweed is fast and tall, no argument there. He can catch, and once he gets more looks, people will forget about those few drops. McDonald is an ample fill-in slot receiver, with a Welker-like style of play.

You can doubt and nay say our WRs all you want, but you will be singing a different tune in a couple weeks. Then again, I guess you think of our WR crew what I think of your “improved” DB crew.

by Johnny_S on Sep 11, 2009 12:27 PM EDT up reply actions

Sweed hasn't done squat

McDonald doesn’t play and Wallace, while fast is an afterthought. Both Holmes and Ward are solid if not better than that, but the others are no more “impressive” than the Ravens depth at the same position.

As far as CB, I’ll take Dmonique Foxworth and Fabian Washington over Frank Walker, Corey Ivy and Samari Rolle, who were our starters before Fabian Washington got here after losing McAlister to injury.

Wow

If you really think our WR crew is anywhere near the same level as yours, you are gravely mistaken. Mason is about as equal as Ward (although he does not block as well as Ward). You have no one anywhere near the level of Holmes.

Did I say Sweed has done anything? No. I said he is tall and fast. True. And he can catch. People just saw one big drop and it’s all they remember. They guy was not highly touted in college for his ability to drop the ball. If I remember correctly, it was his speed and ability to make circus catches.

Did I say McDonald played? No. He is simply in what I would call “depth”. He can fill in well as a slot receiver because he has hands like glue and runs precise routes.

Wallace being fast is an afterthought? Uhhh…what?

by Johnny_S on Sep 11, 2009 1:24 PM EDT up reply actions

Your WR group is top ten in this league. Ours is not even top 20. However, both our groups are not flashy, but get yards when needed. I think this is a pro-bowl year for Holmes. Wallace is nice to, that was a big time catch.

Still hope you all rot in hell though.

You have to hate losing more than you love winning.

Same to you brah, same to you.

I’m glad I was not there for your tirade in the open thread.

by Johnny_S on Sep 11, 2009 1:44 PM EDT up reply actions

While Holmes and Ward are top notch

I still would not call your depth beyond them “impressive,” as you did. Perhaps the depth of having a Steve Breaston as the tird receiver for Arizona is impressive, or when the Rans had Isaac Bruce and Torry Holt, with Kevin Curtis as depth was impressive, or Indy having Reggie Wayne and Marvin Harrison, plus Dallas Clark with Anthony Gonzalez as depth as impressive, or even Carson Palmer having 85 and TJ with Chris Henry as depth, is impressive. But barely used Limas Sweed and the rookie Mike Wallace, sorry not impressive.

You don’t have to believe me, I don’t really care. The depth is impressive. Ward will deliver his usual numbers. Holmes is going to have a stud year. Wallace is going to have good rookie numbers and Sweed is going to make people forget the AFCCG drop.

Of course, all of those trios look impressive now. Hindsight is funny that way. Maybe at the end of this season I can dig up this convo and we can discuss impressive, or maybe vice versa.

Fair by me, but remember,...

…depth does not include your starters. When we do compare, it will be your #3-5 WR’s vs. ours. Considering Pittsburgh looks to not be able to run, they will throw so much more than the Ravens, who led the NFL in rushing attempts. So unless your reserves impressive depth has a lot more stats than ours, I’d say they weren’t.

SWEED?

How can you say Sweed can catch on a Ravens message board?

If I remember correctly, the Ravens decided to not cover him in the endzone where he let the ball bounce off his chest. Then somehow he got hurt from tripping over the goalline.

As far as comparing Receivers for both teams, you win. Ward/Holmes beat Mason/Clayton. To their credit, Mason/Clayton didnt get as many looks as Ward and Holmes but I think our runningbacks/ line looks better. Rice, McGahee, McClain will be more productive than Parker and CO. The 36 yard performance does not look promising. Give credit to Tennessee though.

I'll quote myself here (is that conceded?)

Did I say Sweed has done anything? No. I said he is tall and fast. True. And he can catch. People just saw one big drop and it’s all they remember. They guy was not highly touted in college for his ability to drop the ball. If I remember correctly, it was his speed and ability to make circus catches.

I would not argue with you about running backs. That is true. FWP’s flame is dwindling, Mendenhall can’t figure out how to run like a pro back, and MeMo is a solid 3rd down back. A lot of our bad running though is contributed to our line’s inability to block though.

by Johnny_S on Sep 11, 2009 1:43 PM EDT up reply actions

The entire issue was the quote

“impressive depth” was the issue and it is not, by any means “impressive.”

To you? No

To anyone else who watched the game? Yes.

I watched the game

Ben hit Wallace in the chest standing still to put them in the gamewinning FG position. Did he lay out and make the catch? Was Limas Sweed even dressed? You want impressive. Titans’ Kenny Britt, watch the film again, that was impressive. Mike Wallace most impressive contribution came on Sunday nights on 60 minutes!

by Bruce Raffel on Sep 12, 2009 8:48 AM EDT up reply actions

Steeelrs will win or lose on Ben's arm

but rushing only four is insane as he will wait for one of his guys to get opened and pick you apart all day.

Titans’ Fischer will get creamed in Tennessee’s media for doing that and losing!

I really dont now what to say

I dont completely believe that the Steelers O Line magically gets great at the end of every game for one. That just dont add up. I want to be upset, but Im not, I think it has something to do with seeing Hines Ward (literally) crying on the sideline, he cried…like a girl! It was pricless. He had his little smile going on as he was approaching the endzone and next thing he knew, “french-cries and a wha-m-burger” -Joe Dirt.

But I was very excited to see how horrible Pittsburghs running game is, along with that line. If we can somehow put up some points early on November 29, we can and will dominate the Squeelers.

I was also happy to see how many times Ben was hit, whether it was a sack or not. He was taking some shots, and I give him all the credit in the world for hanging in there as long as he does, but theres nothing better than seeing him go down!

“Americas (new) Team” or as Franco Harris called them, “Team of the World” (made me sick to my stomach, this was during the pregame.) didnt look so invincible after all, they better hope they stay healthy.

Besides that, did anyone see the pregame celebrations/badass party. I want that so bad, I would love nothing more than to be partying it up next year for the kickoff of the NFL season, live from Baltimore!

Yeah, the NFL and NBC love the Steelers

Loved seeing the Black Eyed Peas and especially Fergie, but the black and gold pom poms made me nauseous!

that party sucked. crap eyed peas sounded like poo. tim mcgraw..uuugh. nflnetwrok was drowned out by bad live music. at least lip sync so the machines can correct their bad natural voices. with that said, pitt is great. i wish we could flip a 4th quarter switch. they moved so easy. they did it against us. ben is that great.

we better get good on O fast to keep up with these cats. they dictate the game and teams fall for it. to beat pitt you need to score early and often when there fn’ around. the longer you stay close the stronger the sleeper hold gets.

Aww man...

…I loved the BE Peas and Fergie rocked. I did however, like the “old” non-rocked out, baby-momma Fergie better.

I dunno what you’re worried about, we’ve got the great Frank Walker to send in. He’ll single handedly out “physical” those sets and ol’ Benny will be pump fakin’ to his O-line.

We'll go to bed earlier

OT – long pass – Frank penalized for interference – winning FG. Nite nite.
