Are You "Wacko 4 Flacco" Yet?
Now that the Baltimore Ravens second year QB has a full season plus playoffs, in addition to the entire off season to prepare for this year, are you now feeling comforatble enough to jump on the bandwagon and admit to all that you are indeed, "Wacko 4 Flacco!?"
After last nights 23 for 28, 247 yard, one TD with no interceptions and a 115 QB rating in leading the Ravens to an impressive 17-13 victory over the Carolina Panthers in the 3rd pre-season game for both teams, he is beginning to make believers out of those naysayers who said he was a lucky rookie with a solid defense to help him win games and did not deserve the accolades being placed upon him.
Certainly, they said, he was not as good as the Atlanta Falcon's Matt Ryan, whose rookie season last year also resulted in a playoff appearance, but unlike Flacco's run to the AFC Championship Game, Ryan's ended with an opening game loss to the Arizona Cardinals.
Now the rest of the league is getting a clearer picture at what most Ravens fans have known since last season and that is that this kid is absolutely for real. With a better offensive3 line, healhty receivers and the return of their three--headed rushing attack, a more experienced Flacco should make great strides in his second year.
As other Ravens fans have asked me how I think the team will fare this season, my answer continues to be, "I will be greatly disappointed if the Ravens don't win the Super Bowl this year."
The opinions posted here are those of the administrator of this blog and his loyal readers. They are in no way official comments from the team, and should not be misconstued as such, even though he thinks he could do just as well or even a better job!

Who is that?
I thought this was supposed to be Joe Flacco, but I see 2 distinct eyebrows instead of one hideous uni-brow. There must be some mistake!!!!!!
I'll stick with Ben!
The very existence of flamethrowers proves that some time, somewhere, someone said to themselves, "You know, I want to set those people over there on fire, but I'm just not close enough to get the job done."

You can have him
as good as he’s done, I doubt too many Ravens fans would even trade Flacco for him. I know I wouldn’t, Flacco’s upside is just too huge and Ben is going to be Ben, now and in the future.

Ben IS going to be Ben!!
A standout QB that wins AFC championships, and superbowls! I highly doubt Flacco’s upside will be anything compared to what Ben was, is, or will be.

Yea Jackmca, there is no chance that Flacco will ever be on the level of the 2 guys above that Johnny_S stated. If Shaun Rodgers and Brady Quinn had a baby, Ghandi would be the type of baby born with down syndrome. Their babies would become gods from birth.
You have to hate losing more than you love winning.
Scary you should say that
As you should be the first one to remind us that just like Flacco, Ben took his team to the AFC Championship Game and lost his rookie season and what happened the next year? They won the Super Bowl, behind a QB from a mid-major. Hmmm…..something sounds familiar….

as a rookie
let’s run back Roethlisberger’s numbers as a rookie. they weren’t pretty either.
just wait until he finally has full control over the dark side of the force. he will do surgery on Dick LeBeau’s subconscious.

I really LOLed at that one
Ben’s rookie numbers were much better than Flacco’s. Higher passer rating, higher comp %, more TDs, 1 less pick.
And putting Flacco and Sir LeBeau in the same thought is a complete joke. I am not talking shit on your boy, but he is unproven. LeBeau is the best DC in the league (one of the best of all time). Again, you all are getting carried away.
by John Stephens on Sep 2, 2009 2:11 PM EDT up reply actions
Really?
Flacco had more passing yards, more rushing TD’s , more rushing yards, and 1 more playoff win. Joe also played 18 games compared to Ben’s 15 games. I don’t see how Ben was much better..
If you look at the only 16 game season that Ben has managed to put together his QB rating is actually lower than Flacco.

I am glad you read none of this conversation. jackma said:
let’s run back Roethlisberger’s numbers as a rookie. they weren’t pretty either.
And I responded to that by comparing the numbers. Comparing a rookie to 5th year really does not make sense in the context here.
Back to the rookie year comparisons. Flacco had only 300 more yards in 2 extra games and 130 extra pass attempts (reg season). You pointing out that Joe played more games makes Ben’s numbers that much better.
As far as the playoffs go, yeah…Flacco’s stellar numbers really won you those games….
And we are talking about QBs, not RBs, so rush yards and rush TDs don’t mean shit to me.

See
You are just another one of those fans caught up in stats. Is there a difference between a 38-35 win and a 9-6 win? No there is not. A win is a win. So he was not the reason for winning the Titans game? I am pretty sure the defense did not score 13 points that we had to win. Please let me know if I am wrong.
Coming from a Steeler fan, I cannot believe you are saying this. Just because your QB does not put up Manning or Brady numbers does not mean that he was not a reason for winning the games. He was the QB, the most IMPORTANT position on a football team, and got 2 playoff wins. He was a very big reason why we won both those games.
Its not always about what you do, but what you don’t do in some victories.

Dude I watched those games. Your defense and your running won the game against Miami. And then Tennessee beat themselves with some very nice stops by your defense in the RZ.

Flacco didn’t throw a TD against Miami. So I am not sure what you mean? And his rush TD? The score was already 20-9. Two scores against a team that had not managed to score a TD the entire game.

So in order for Joe to get credit he had to have a td pass against Miami? Him leading us down field and handing it off for the score is the same thing as throwing it for the score. He still was able to lead us to 7 on the board

johnny check his QB rating vs. miami
and tell me that having a qb rating of 100—mistake free passing, in conjunction with the run and the defnese, tell me that passing efficiency didn’t matter! it’s absurd, look i was joking about him “doing surgery” on Dick LeBeau but honestly you’re in complete denial if you don’t think Flacco helped win both of those games. Kyle Boller would have had plenty of opportunities to lose those games for us but Flacco took those opportunities and got positive outcomes. what is your point.

Reed scored 1 TD in the Wild Card game.
So Flacco was not responsible for leading us to the other 20 points we had to win that game? So Flacco was not the guy who made the play on 3 and 13 to get the much needed TD against the Titans that ultimately started our TEAM dominance.
People like you make the game of football look terrible. You honestly think that in order for a QB to get credit for winning games, he has to have 25-30 completions, 250-300 yards and 3 TD’s.
You have to hate losing more than you love winning.
What do you mean you people? Haha
When did I say any of that about a QB? Clearly, I never did because Ben is not a statistical stand out. You are putting words in my mouth. However, just saying “he wins games” would be ignorant just the same.
Flacco going 9/23 is not winning you the game, just the same as Ben going 9/21 did not win the Steelers the SB. I know that a great defense and a great running game won the Steelers SB XL.

im saying that Roethlisberger deserves cretit for a lot of Wins that happened with unremarkable numbers from him even if he didn’t throw a game-winning TD or anything. By that same rationale, Flacco deserves credit for the miami win because he was effecient with the football and moved the ball down the field. you must not have been watching.
IF you were going to make the point that Flacco does NOT deserve credit for the Miami win, despite his high QB rating and mistake-free game, then by that same rationale, Roethlisberger also does not deserve credit for a lot of his wins in which he had mediocre numbers, didn’t throw the game-winning td, etc.

No problem. I’ve been there before.
Although you are right about moving the ball when it counts. This is why I changed my opinion of the Titans game. Flacco put you in a position to win that game, despite low numbers. This is the same reason I thought Ben shoulda been the SB MVP.

And don’t be an asshole and say some stuff about Flacco and the AFCC. We all know what happened. But to say that Flacco was not a reason for winning those two playoff games is just idiotic. Stats do not mean shit.
Flacco had 20 completions 296 yards and 2 TD’s in the two wins in the playoffs. That is 14.6 yards a completion, and when you have a running game like that, those are some big time throws to move the ball down the field. I will take a QB who manages his team to a victory over a QB who puts up insane stats in a loss any day.
You have to hate losing more than you love winning.
Steelers fan simply WILL NOT admit that Flacco’s rookie season was anywhere near as impressive as Roethlisburger… much less… GASP… better. They hold their players in a god-like status. If you’ve ever heard Steelers fans talk about Joe Greene, Terry Bradshaw or Franco Harris, you would think that they worship them. They talk about them with such reverence that you’d think that their players walked on water.
For us to even compare Flacco to any of their players, past or present, is an insult to them. Their world stood still when LenDale White stomped on the terrible towel. How could anyone do SUCH A THING? I bet some of them actually cried over it and wrote death threats to the Tennessee players. This is what we’re dealing with here. It’s an irrational, ignorant fanaticism that I’ve only seen elsewhere in suicide bombers.
Anyway… There are many reasons, which I have argued many times, why Roethlisburger’s rookie numbers were better than Flacco’s rookie numbers. The biggest reason is because Roethlisburger was playing with some of the best offensive weapons in the NFL. He had Hines Ward in his prime, Plaxico Burress, and Antwaan Randel El. Furthermore, he had time to sit behind Tommy Maddox and learn for a few games. He wasn’t thrown into the fire like Flacco was.
It’s actually MORE impressive that Flacco managed to win more playoff games than Roethlisburger with significantly less talent around him. If Flacco had those weapons, I believe that he could have posted better numbers than Roethlisburger. He may have even won it all.
Right
This coming from a fan of the team that still talks shit after losing to us 3 times. This coming from a fan of the team, where after the game in Baltimore a fan got directly in my face holding a “Pittsburgh Sucks” towel and threatening to “kick [my] ass till yer dead” Get off your high horse dude. All teams have nuts fans. Don’t try to put the Steelers out on some limb away from other fans.
I never said Joe did not have a good rookie year, I just said it was not as good as Ben’s. Which I stand by despite your “two playoff win” argument.
Furthermore, I was not even alive during the Greene, Bradhsaw and Harris days so I never talk about them. As far as Lendale white goes, I could care less because we ended up with the last laugh. Consider me puzzled though why any guy would want to stomp on paraphernalia used to raise money for special needs kids.
And I like how you argue that Flacco has no weapons when he has a GREAT back field and a good O-line and he had Mason. Let’s be honest tho Randle El is not some great WR, just a decent #3. Ben definitely had more, but its not like your boy had nothing.
he had time to sit behind Tommy Maddox and learn for a few games
First of all, it’s Tommy Maddox, I doubt he was learning anything from him. Two, he sat one game before being thrown into the fire against the division rival on the road. That is not all that different from Flacco.

This coming from a fan of the team that still talks shit after losing to us 3 times.
I cannot tell if you’re saying that I’m “talking shit” or if the team is “talking shit.” As far as I’m concerned, I’ve never been a poor sport about losing those three games. Even when I was whining about the bad call in the second game, I was careful to admit that the Steeler’s ultimately won the game fair and square. After the playoff game, I just simply admitted that the Steelers were the better team last year… I still do. However, last year was last year, and all team and player comparisons are open for discussion.
This coming from a fan of the team, where after the game in Baltimore a fan got directly in my face holding a "Pittsburgh Sucks" towel and threatening to "kick [my] ass till yer dead" Get off your high horse dude. All teams have nuts fans. Don’t try to put the Steelers out on some limb away from other fans.
I probably should not have just dove into this argument and stereotyped you. I apologize for that, but I still believe that the stereotype that I described exists… in abundance. Now, you are right. I’m sure that Baltimore has a stereotype, and I’m sure that every team has they’re annoying fans. However, even you must admit that Steelers fans take it to another level, and for their bitter rivals, it’s almost unbearable. I can guarantee you that Steelers fans are much more annoying to Baltimore fans than Baltimore fans are to Steelers fans. Read any message board and marvel at the shock and outrage coming from Steelers fans at anyone who dare says that their team isn’t the absolute best. You simply cannot escape Steelers fans… and that really sucks for Baltimore fans.
And I like how you argue that Flacco has no weapons when he has a GREAT back field and a good O-line and he had Mason. Let’s be honest tho Randle El is not some great WR, just a decent #3. Ben definitely had more, but its not like your boy had nothing.
I didn’t bring the backfield into the equation. I would actually say that the offensive lines and running backs were a wash and about equal for this discussion. Flacco had help to be sure, but it was about equal for Roethlisburger. You seem to be fixated on the statistics and believe that since Roethlisburger had a better statistical year, he had a better rookie season. I was arguing that his better wide receivers are the reason for his better numbers, and therefore, Flacco’s season is more impressive since he posted similar numbers and won more playoff games.
Roethlisburger had some of the best weapons in the NFL at the time. Sure, Randel El isn’t a number one reciever, but he’s an awesome slot/third receiver. Can you even name the Raven’s third receiver last season (Williams was on IR)? Ward was healthy all season, and Burress was very productive in the eleven games that he played (and those games helped to bolster Roethlisburger’s statistics). Randel El also was a factor since he was an excellent option when the other guys were being shut down.
Flacco had Mason, and while I love Mason, he was not nearly as good last season as Ward was in Roethlisburger’s rookie campaign. Comparing Clayton and Burress is almost laughable. Burress went to New York and put up 1200 yards the next year! Basically, Roethlisburger had the luxury of throwing to two number one wide receivers in their prime with an excellent slot guy in Antwaan Randel El.
I cannot believe that you would/could even argue that 1) our receivers were anywhere near that good last season and 2) that the receivers didn’t drastically effect and inflate Roethlisburger’s rookie numbers. Mason is a 34 year old veteran receiver on the verge of retirement, Clayton was rarely a factor last season and Heap was blocking all season.
Furthermore, Flacco’s QB rating of 80.3 includes his first five games. I like to call them his “learning” games where he threw only 1 touchdown and 7 interceptions with a rating of 60.1. In his last eleven games, he threw 13 touchdowns and only 5 interceptions with a QB rating of 91.1. Obviously, this is hard to quantify in this argument, and I’m not really arguing this as a reason that Flacco had a better rookie season. I just thought that you should be aware of these facts since so many people simply look at his 80.3 rating that doesn’t really tell the whole story.
Wow… Sorry for the long comment. I sort-of got on a roll.
I just do not like when people say “All Team X fans are whackos, therefore you are one”. Being a whacko has nothing to do with what sports team that person is a fan of, it has to do with that person. I was only making my two examples to show that crazy people are fans of every team in the NFL.
Anyway, I cannot really agree with you on Steelers fans being more unbearable for Ravens fans, considering I basically live in Baltimore. Every time I wear any Steelers jersey, Ravens fans talk shit to me. This includes directly after the AFCCC and the SB last year. Generally, I find Ravens fans unknowledgeable and annoying (I wouldn’t include you all in this). Maybe on the vast scale you might be right, but from my point-of-view its the opposite.
Anyway, what I just remembered, and can’t believe I didn’t point it out before, is that when both Flacco and Ben lost in the playoffs they lost to the eventual SB champions and the both lost in the AFCCC. In this case, I think that their post seasons are very comparable. The Steelers just happened to have a first round bye.
I never said that your WR crew was better than ours in 04. But just saying your crew was nobodies is not true, bc of mason. However, I think it is interesting to point out that the next year Ben had comparable stats without Burress.

They are much better for his rookie year, this is clear. If you want, since Ben did not play a full 16, you can average out the statistics per game. Ben’s rookie year > Flacco’s.
And if we are doing apples to apples. Ben won the SB last year and his and Flacco’s numbers were just about equal. So Ben last year > Flacco last year.
PS-If you didn’t give a shit what I thought, you would not be arguing with me right now.

We don't give a
shit about what you care about. But, we do have the responsibility to correct the BS you spout over here.
More playing time does not necessarily mean better stats, QB rating, sacks, fumbles etc.. can be hurt by more playing time.
I am not arguing that Flacco’s stats were better, just that Ben’s were not “much” better. Here maybe this will help:
http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/much
Whether you want to admit it or not, there were categories that Flacco did better in, Ben did not “sweep” the stats race, he edged Joe out in a few categories and Joe won a few others.
You want to knock Joe for not being the reason he won games, why don’t we look a the supporting cast of Ben’s rookie year. He had a pro-bowl line protecting him with Hartings, Faneca, and Smith (All Pro Bowlers in 04). And two franchise quality receivers in Burress and Ward. Not to mention Bettis as a major distraction in the run game. It would be easy to argue that Ben actually had little to do with the success that year. On the flip side you could argue Joe won in spite of his situation. What did Joe have? A banged up O-line that were virtually rookies, a 34 year old WR with a dislocated shoulder (albeit he did not play like one), rookie head coach, new offensive system for the entire team…
For a fan that just won a SB you sure are one bitter dude. Although it must suck being a poser Steeler fan that lives in Baltimore and only has the O’s to root for, I guess I would be bitter too. Drive to Pittsburgh for the weekend, maybe that will make you feel better.

Johnny_S has no response to this. The argument is over and we have officially won. I would love to see him try to formulate a response

Yeah, but....
…guys….let’s clean up the colorful language and personal comments……both ways, regardless of what team you might be wrongly rooting for.

Sorry. I get heated when people do not give Joe credit.
You have to hate losing more than you love winning.
You are getting me all wrong
I am not discrediting Joe. Someone said Joe had a better rookie year, and I disagreed. Never said Joe sucked.

No Problem
my initial comment here was merely observational, my tone only changed once our friendly visitor decided to use an expletive while questioning my literacy and cognitive abilities.
When did I do that?
The only one I see is when I said “shit” about saying something didn’t mean shit to me. Never used one to question your literacy. In fact, I never questioned your literacy. I just stated you must not have read what the argument was about.
I apologize for using “shit” though, didn’t realize that was not allowed.

We are high class people that don’t have potty mouths unlike btsc where someone once told me to suck a $&@! And then called me a f**got.
You have to hate losing more than you love winning.
Classy.
My apologies for that guy, sounds like one of those whackos I was talking about.
Sometimes I get confused cause CamdenChat allows curing in comments. Sometimes I get carried away and forget where I am in some comments.

I am just messing around about being classy, for my case atleast. Someone did say those words before at btsc to me. But I am far from classy on these blogs. I will never stop making rape jokes and I only censor myself cuz Bruce asked me to. You should have seen the 19 comments I got in over at the the browns blog before they banned me. Let’s just say they were not words you should use at church
You have to hate losing more than you love winning.
Yeah that crap on the Browns blog gave me a chuckle, because it was before I knew who you were. Good stuff.
In the end, we are kinda similar, Malor, except the whole Steelers/Ravens thing.

Now I just make accounts so I can blog on the browns site. I have gotten this account banned and one named orange helmats and another named M410R. I need to come up with a new one. And we are not similar. I support Gary Williams!!!!!!!!

Yeah but you are still a fan of Terps sports. Always okay in my book.

Not really
I think we have beat to death our disagreements in the rookie year stats so I am just going to address the rest of your paragraph.
I cannot completely compare the two O-lines from Ben’s rookie year and Joe’s. However, I think it is crazy to say that you did not have a good O-line last year. Any team that can run as well as you did, has to have a good offensive line. Anyway, the only stat, although not going to give an accurate portrayal completely, is sacks. Ben was sacked 30 times his rookie year and Joe 34 (keep in mind Ben played 2 less reg season games). Not that far off, even with our pro bowl line.
Ben did have two great receivers, but keep in mind Plaxico only played 11 games in 2004 because of an injury. Also Mason was still a stud last year, no matter what you say and despite his age, even with that shoulder.
Speaking of injuries, Bettis also was banged up in 2004 and had under 1000 yards. Granted, Bettis had Staley to step in and take the bulk of the carries when he was hurting. Anyway, again, its not like you had some terrible running game behind Flacco.
Bitter? No. But I do enjoy a good argument. Anyway, I live in Columbia not Baltimore. And it’s ironic that you call me a “poser Steeler fan” considering I have been a Steelers fan longer than you have been a Ravens fan. Say, tell me, who were you a fan of before you jumped ship to the Ravens? Wouldn’t that make you a poser? At least I have been a Steeler fan my entire life.
by John Stephens on Sep 3, 2009 8:49 AM EDT up reply actions
Most of us have been fans of the Baltimore area (Born, raised or live here)
Our entire lives. Just because we didn’t have a team doesn’t mean were going to be a Redskin, Eagles or god forbid Steeler fan. I was a NFL fan in general but did not have a “team.” I am proud of where I come from and could never fathom rooting for another city over Baltimore. It would just feel dirty. I’m going to be a Baltimore fan until I die, regardless of if its the Ravens or any other team. The players, management, stadiums, uniforms, and even owners change but my city will remain constant, as will my support for the teams that rep Baltimore.
I highly doubt the vast majority of Ravens fans did not have a team before the Ravens. That’s a tad ridiculous to believe that.
by John Stephens on Sep 3, 2009 10:21 AM EDT up reply actions
then you just don't know what you're talking about
people watched football, some went to redskins games, but the love just wasn’t there. if you lived in this city between 1995 and 2000, you saw the difference. People who hadn’t been watching football for years started watching again. This is a football town and, by and large, allegiances didn’t change. THere may have been a few people in Laurel who shifted from Colts to Skins in the late 80s, but that’s not the majority.

Ehh we will have to disagree then
I saw a large amount of fans jump from the Skins, Colts, Steelers, etc to become a Ravens fan (especially once they got good). It happens. Just look at the massive increases in Steelers fans after XL and XLIII.
Anyway, I also have to disagree that Baltimore was always a football town. I remember in the days of Cal, when the Os were competing, that it was considered a baseball town. Should be interesting to see what happens if the Os come to compete, like I think they can, in 2 years.
by John Stephens on Sep 3, 2009 2:00 PM EDT up reply actions
obviously
youre talking about Cal O’s in the 90s? There was no football team dude! of course we were a baseball town!
I think the O’s can bring it seriously in the next 2 years as well. But this is a football town. It’s so blue collar, and since the move from Memorial Stadium, the O’s organization has definitely gentrified the O’s crowd a bit.

Details, details
This town was a football town when the Colts were here and the O’s were still winning! We love our football and no Steelers fan can understand what we felt or went through during the “dark” period of no football team.
aka 'Rexx'
it was truly awful
i remember going to redskins games and rooting for someone to beat them—which the other team usually did in the 90s. I remember seeing Steve Young torch them mercilessly.

Definitely. My dad and grandfather were die hard colts. My dad always told me that he tried to root for the redskins but just did not feel that love he had for the colts, even with the skins being very successful in the 80’s. He stuck with bmore even wihout a team and it paid off. The ones who switched over are not true fans if you have to root for a team that you really don’t love. I still believe that people from Baltimore and even Maryland who have lived here their whole lives who root for the steelers are fake fans. I won’t mention names….
You have to hate losing more than you love winning.
Yeah yeah
I would be a much faker fan if I had jumped over to the Ravens after I had been a Steelers fan my whole life.

I was Wacko for Flacco when I went to the Towson football game during his Senior year and Delware played them. I saw Joe throw 5 TD’s against Towson and was like, “This guy has an incredible arm.”
Not knowing of course that I was watching a Hall of Fame QB right before my eyes.

Can you believe were 22pt dogs? Hopefully Nolan Carroll can fill the Kevin Barnes role from last year and cause Jahvid Best to lose his lunch on the field.
Their defense is nasty. Hopefully someone steps up for DHB and getting rid of Kosh should help us. Fridge needs to open up the play book big time and allow for Turner to launch it and Darell to run all over the field.

You been watching Terrapin Rising? (Random Thoughts)
Our WR’s will be good… Cannon and Torrey Smith look nice. Emani-Lee-Odai is the man. Gotta love the DC accent.
Hopefully our lines will be sufficient.
I love new D Cord. Don Brown. Huge, huge upgrade over Cosh.
What the hell did Nolan Carroll do? He went from after thought WR as a frosh, to a potential ALL-ACC CB.
It will be a tough game but I’ll be cool as long as we are in it in the fourth quarter.
