BaltimoreRavens.com Quotes Me in Story

On BaltimoreRavens.com, they have a section called You Said It!  I posted my comments on how tired I was about hearing how less dominant the Ravens' defense would be due to its off season losses. This is an old topic here on Baltimore Beatdown, but I still wanted to answer the critics, cynics and doubters I continue to see and hear everywhere, much less from the national TV "experts."  They liked it enough to post it so click here to see it.

The opinions posted here are those of the administrator of this blog and his loyal readers. They are in no way official comments from the team, and should not be misconstued as such, even though he thinks he could do just as well or even a better job!

I saw that when it came out and laughed. I was quoted a while back on You Said It when the schedule change discussions were coming about. The Beatdown takeover has officially begun!

I could swear that the comment right next to yours (On Willis McGahee Not Receiving Enough Respect…) was written by BAL_Hawk. Not only is it pro-McGahee, but he misspells “dominant” as “dominate.” Is Keith Hargis you, BAL_Hawk?

Nope, that’s not me. It just goes to show that McGahee hasn’t lost all support yet.

Also, do I often misspell? I think that I have good grammar and spelling.

by BAL_Hawk on Jul 8, 2009 9:17 PM EDT up reply actions

It’s just the dominant-dominate thing that I’d noticed. Otherwise, you’re squeaky clean.

probably. that’s why he spells Harris “Hargis”.

YOU SAID IT

Where’s my 2nd receiver? Damn it. Quote that. If I hear Marcus Smith one more time I’ll puke. We’ve had 22,000 Marcus Smiths come through this team. He’ll just end up getting 1 end zone corner jump ball (incomplete) per game like every other receiver over 6’2" that’s played for us.

I Would Agree with You

if Billick were still the HC. But Harbaugh does not seem as enamored with the corner jump ball as Brian was. I could be wrong, but I do not remember that play being called as ofter last year as years past.

by vlad755 on Jul 9, 2009 12:21 PM EDT up reply actions

your right. thank god that play went the way of billick. that play is the ultimate cop out play. you have the ball. your in position to take control and you throw up a 50-50 jump ball. how is that a good play at all. chickens use that play. give me a QB/coach with balls that throws a frozen rope in that situation like Elway did against Cleveland in the Drive.

by raven on Jul 9, 2009 1:12 PM EDT reply actions

I Never Did Understand that Philosophy

You have the ball on the two; you have a top three running game, if not the best at that particular moment and you choose to… …through lob to the corner flag? Is the thought process you might “fool” the defense? Nowadays in the NFL, to fool defenses, you need either a) be very quick i.e. play action to a slant/across the middle or b) have lots of space i.e. a reverse to the long side of the field or a screen… a jump ball is in very tight quarters, slow to develop and slow to arrive -kind of goes against the above laid out tenants…

Why not just pound the ball, if you have an all-world running game like the Ravens typically do? No wonder Ogden more than once stormed off the field ticked off… Or, if you really feel like you need to pass it, a quick three step drop to frozen rope like raven suggests. I have not down the research, but I would be willing to bet frozen ropes have a higher success rate than corner jumps.

Exactly

If he was as attogant as people said, he should have said out loud, "I’m running up the moddle for four palys and if you can stop us, then more power to ya. Otherwise, we’re scoring on you. But no, he wssed out time and time agan, and that was the reason he had to go.

oh yeah…PUKE.

I’ll go out on a limb and say that Marcus Smith gets 18 receptions this year for 176 yards and 0 TD’s. Mason will have 96 receptions for 1026 yards. Clayton will have 31 for 570 and Williams 19 for 340.

by raven on Jul 9, 2009 1:19 PM EDT reply actions

WRONG

Marcus Smith (here’s where you puke), has a bunch of key receptions, takes over as Flacco’s go-to guy after Mason and Clayton do not get re-signed and becomes one of the young talents in the league and the receiving main threat on the team. If I am right, will you be happy – finally!?

if your 1st and goal on the 5 or better thats 4 straight runs for me every time. if you can’t get 5 yards on 4 carries you deserve to lose. screw the D stacking the box as long as you spread your receivers the DB’s and maybe an LB have to stay away from the line.

1st or 2nd and goal on the 1 in DC and Banks throws a pick to lose it. that defines billick for me.
Get rid of Dilfer and Sharp because they were outspoken and right…

We go to the superbowl the following year with Dilfer at QB instead of GrBac.

NFW

Remember, we lost Jamal right off the bat the next season. With Dilfer at QB, we wouldn’t have made the playoffs at all! In the first game of the 2001 season, we beat the Bears 16-3. I remember seeing a pass that Grbac threw in the first quarter and turned to my bro-in-law and said, “no way Dilfer completes that pass.” Dilfer never won a game for us. Grbac carried us that season until he lost heart and cried on the sidelines and then retired.

by Bruce Raffel on Jul 9, 2009 8:24 PM EDT up reply actions

Dilfer never lost heart.

And with that team, he did not necessarily have to win games for us. Jamal was a huge loss, but who knows what would have happened had Dilfer not been released. Jamal may have never taken that snap from grbac and gotten hurt.

by Mr MaLoR on Jul 9, 2009 9:00 PM EDT up reply actions

Dude

Our SB season we couldn’t score and that was with Jamal. We went 5 games w/o a TD. With Terry Allen and Brookins playing alongside Dilfer we might have scored 3 TD’s all season.

by DT711 on Jul 10, 2009 8:58 AM EDT up reply actions

You are nuts

Got to love revisionist history.

No f-ing way that Dilfer leads an offense with RB’s Terry Allen and Jason Brookins to the SB. We might not have even made the playoffs with Dilfer.

Think before you guys type

The Bears had the #1 Defense in 2001 and gave up a league low 203 points all season. That is 12.7 per game. So to answer your question….

geee, grbac put up 16 on the bears…lol. who couldn’t?

The rest of the league couldn’t, that’s who, and Grbac did it with no running game whatsoever.

by DT711 on Jul 10, 2009 9:02 AM EDT up reply actions

Dilfer couldn't

that is, without the defense bailing him out. I’m so sick of the Dilfer released issue. He was as overrated here as he was unrealized potential for Tampa until they grew tired of his skills and let him go. He was just lucky to be on the team that carried him to the SB despite his abilities, among the worst in the league. We won despite him, not because of him.

Enough of the “we shoulda kept Dilfer” bandwagon stuff!

aka 'Rexx'

by Bruce Raffel on Jul 10, 2009 9:24 AM EDT up reply actions

Should have given him another shot.

Do we go to the Superbowl with Tony Banks? No. We should have seen what happened with Dilfer before we shipped off a QB that led us to a Superbowl when we were in serious trouble at one point. Yes, I know the defense was good, but the QB is the most important piece.

Puh-lease, expect more from you than this. “Led us?” You slay me.

by Bruce Raffel on Jul 10, 2009 8:30 PM EDT up reply actions

Its the most important position

I understand that the defense was the key reason to our success, but without Dilfer that year, we would not have made it. He did enough have us win our last 12 games. The QB touches the ball more then anyone and is the most important position on your team. As great as our defense was that year, Dilfer was solid and had a lot to do with getting that ring. His numbers weren’t spectacular over the 11 games he played, but Flacco’s numbers weren’t spectacular last year and he led us to the AFCC.

You have to hate losing more than you love winning.

by Mr MaLoR on Jul 11, 2009 9:46 AM EDT up reply actions

Flacco did what Dilfer could not have done

That is lead us to the playoffs. Dilfer did not come close to “leading” us! He road the coattails of what was the best defense ever, certainly a lot beter than the 2008 version. I disagree that we would not have made the post season w/o him. I think the team would have righted itself with just about anyone behind center that magical year. It’s just that Trent was in the right place at the right time. Nothing more, nothing less.

aka 'Rexx'

by Bruce Raffel on Jul 11, 2009 9:51 AM EDT up reply actions

See

I defend Dilfer so much just because he was the QB to have won a Superbowl with us and I thank him and everyone else on that team everyday for getting Baltimore back on track. But if we kept Tony Banks in there, you really think we still get the Superbowl? F*** No!

The team didn’t score a freaking touchdown for a month with Banks under center. Dilfer came in and did just enough to win for us. Banks did nothing. Although I will admit I was excited to see him that season after we shut out Pitt 16-0 in week 1 then Banks threw 5 TD’s the next week against Jax. But then everything went wrong.

by Mr MaLoR on Jul 11, 2009 10:02 AM EDT up reply actions

What might have happened if

Trent didn’t bring us back after throwing that idiotic interception against Tennessee? The next guy would have stepped up. Dilfer didn’t exactly explode after we finally scored a TD after five games. Sorry, still disagree, and besides I have a Banks jersey that I’m holding onto until it reaches top value one day!

Scott Mitchell, Stoney Case, Tony Banks,...

…Trent Dilfer Chris Redman, Chris Evert…..doesn’t matter. The defense won the Super Bowl regardless and despite whomever QB’d.

Not really Sure how to Respond

As much of a Boller fan as I am…

I guess for every “Dilfer Duck” put up (neck braces all around-!) Boller would TRIP OVER HIS OWN TWO FEET pulling away from center… never seen a QB trip so much in all my life…

…so I guess it is a wash, which means we would have won with Boller
