R.I.P. Steve McNair

While he only played two seasons for our Baltimore Ravens, I consider it an honor to have watched Steve McNair play in a Raven uniform. He'll always be remembered as a Tennessee Titan, as he should be, but he'll also go down as one of the toughest and grittiest players in NFL history.
During his time in Baltimore, it seemed like he was always on the injury report with a strained back, sore shoulder, or bruised ribs, among many more injuries. Regardless of the ailment, he persevered and led the Ravens during the 2006 season when they went 13-3 and won the AFC North. At the end of his career, it appeared his injuries finally caught up with him as the perennial hall of famer was forced to call it quits after 13 seasons.
However, his past statistics and achievements take a backseat to today's news that McNair, 36, was tragically shot and killed in Nashville. It is unclear exactly what happened but when it comes down to it, a young man and woman lost their life due to an act of gun violence.
On my way home today, I heard a piece of the Sporting News radio show during which they were discussing the link between professional athletes and violence. As of now, it does not appear that Steve McNair put himself in any danger. However, professional athletes, especially NFL players, seem to find themselves in the middle of dangerous situations. Sean Taylor, Darrent Williams, and Steve McNair are just a few of the athletes who have recently been killed or involved with gun violence. Their deaths give creedence to the notion that high-profile athletes are targeted more often than average joes. I've got to believe that professional athletes are going to feel more inclined to protect themselves.
Would you feel comfortable with more athletes wielding firearms for protection? Occasionally, professional athletes are the danger as seen through Tank Johnson's and Plaxico Burress' off the field gun-related problems. It is a very complicated issue that may never be fully resolved. As for now, our prayers go out to the McNair family as they mourn the loss of a true competitor.
RIP Steve

PROMOTED!!! Thanks for the great post, BK
I updated it with a link to the Titans blogger’s story as well, and highlighted a couple of links, as well as slightly changed the title to better fit the Front Page.
Thanks again!

Unfortunately,....
….as much as we defend him, and I certainly get riled up when people ignorantly call him a “murderer,” I guess you can add our own Ray Lewis to that list of professional athletes putting themselves in or around unnecessary violent situations.

Agreed
With everyone and their grand mother pumping up celebrities egos I think they feel a sense of being invincible. In almost all of the gun scenarios with NFL athletes they could’ve been avoided.
However, this just seems like a case of Steve getting involved with a crazy girl.

are they going to try to say this was a murder/sucide?
are they going to try to say this was a murder/sucide? the guy is 2 fast and big like to the point it should have been tusk. we believe this was 2 personal to be a murder/suicide. this female was 20 yrs old living it up, y would she kill anybody, cause you can’t say it was for money she was set. sorry Michelle for your lost. but this is deeper than just a shut and close case. whats next they going to say he was on something? this is BS. 2 me (i’m not a CSI specialist), the position of the bodies and the shotting range show that this was something personal and someone was piss.

Sad....
I have been reading articles for the past two days and it seems to be the same thing involved almost every time. African American athletes gunned down due to drugs, violence, etc. As a Bengals fan we have seen our share of front page news, but this is just so sad. I’m sure McNair was a fine fellow, but players seem to be putting themselves in harms way time and time again. I don’t get it. Do they feel they are unstoppable off the field too? Do they seek this kind of lifestyle to keep the adrenaline going off the field? I don’t understand. I’m sure there will be answers in the upcoming weeks following this tragedy, but I’m betting that the scenario will not play out nicely and McNair’s legacy will take a hit. Everyone around him are saying what a great family man he was and just a swell guy, well, what was he doing at a young woman’s house around 2am when he is married with 4 children? Doesn’t sound good, and I’m guessing McNair was in a situation that wasn’t good from the start…..I just wish things would change and people would wake up.

In his defense
It just sounds like his “side piece” was just really really really crazy. People cheat all the time and usually dont get gunned down for it — although there is a potential for bad things to happen when one is unfaithful to their spouse of course.

how was he putting himself in harms way when he was in his own home. & it aint like he just pick this chick up from a club or something that night. i think they been together for a minute. but me being a wife and my husband seperated somebody is still going to give me some answers. No suspects my azz. i’m not just going to be @ home upset, we gonna find out truely who or what killed my husband. i wouldnt care what kind of terms me and my husband was on. cause aint no way someone is about to come to my condo ride up an elevator (probably), come to my house and put bullets in me and no one got camera on. dude its a condo that i’m paying a arm & leg for..
Joe thats true. you got a spouse and that spouse cheated than all forgiven the 1st time. but the spouse decide we need to discontinue this relationship for a while than a spouse suppose to be real and respect that desicion. no ones really benefiting for knock off the other spouse but the kids. than u ask what was the point of killing my spouse because he/she cheated and now i got life or guilty consious on going to eat the spouse up. I dont care what anybody says, but this is bullsh*t, the cops not looking for no suspects thats the 1st. & for the people that never dated a black guy, some black guys does not go looking for trouble all the time some time unnessecary trouble finds them in there own bedroom

“lol” is an interjection, which is not grammatically related to any other part of the sentence. You really have no room to tell anybody here what is and isn’t correct grammar. And, yes, this technically is a forum for voicing your opinion. But, if you can’t manage to do so without sounding like you’re mildly retarded, then you need to be prepared to handle the feedback. Welcome to the Beatdown.

It's not that
I can barely comprehend what you’re trying to say. Typos are whatever, but all I see is a bunch of jumbled words when you write.
Let me try and break down my point as simple as possible for you:
No, I would not kill anyone unless it were self defense or trying to protect a victim. In my 23 short years of existence I have noticed that whenever I’m doing something wrong bad things of all different levels tend to follow.
Should he have gotten shot? No, but unfortunately there are crazy people in this world (especially with relationships) and he met one.

Apparently, he co-owned the condo
with his friend who found them there. He also knew that women, as I said earlier, that they were pulled over in a car that she was driving for a minor traffic violation. So something went awry and she must have been REALLY pissed off; pulled a gun, killed him and then put one into her own head. Might just be speculating, but whaqtever it’s just not good for those 4 kids of his. So very sad.

Who can judge?
Some are reporting that Steve’s house was up for sale?….maybe his marriage was over? Maybe after playing for thirteen years…he was looking for something to fill in the whole? Maybe he made a mistake?
All I can think to say is….Steve was born on Valentines day…..Let’s hope he’s spreading some love in heaven…..Rip ..Steve his family and hers

Their saying that Mcnair’s death is officially classified as a homicide now but they are not sure about Ms. Kazemi’s death because a pistol was found under her.

RIP McNair
Such a loss, played the game how it should be played. These prima donna QB’s that come outta college needa take a page out of this guys book
One of the incredible few players I hated to have to watch the Steelers play. He owned us, with both Ravens and Titans. No argument from me
RIP McNair, thanks for the memories

R.I.P. Air McNair
I’d like to share a moment I had personally with Steve McNair. About 2 years ago, I was a server at a local pizza chain (the one that is Spanish for “1”) in Grand Rapids, MI. A large family was there celebrating a wedding and Steve had flown in for the gathering. I recognized him right away being a fan and went up to him, said hi and that I was a big fan. He shook my hand and said “Thanks man! I appreciate it.” He then proceeded to sign an autograph for me and EVERY other employee who wanted one. He must have signed his name 50 times, smiling the whole time, talking and joking. He then picked up both tabs, the bar tab and the family’s dinner tab, tipping the bartender $50 on $50 and the waiter serving the dinner $200 on $200… Now that’s class people. A very generous human being who was born poor in Mississippi and when he got paid, he gave back… I was thoroughly impressed with this man and am so saddened by his meaningless death. It does not surprise me about all the charitable things he’s done in his life. My guess is, he tried to end things with this 20 year old waitress, knowing that he has a family, and she went crazy and gunned him down and then realized she just ruined her life and ended her’s as well. Hell, everyone has problems with their wives/girlfriends. Obviously things weren’t working out with him and his wife so he had a girlfriend in the interim, can’t blame a guy for that can you? I agree with Joe D, there’s crazy people in this world and sadly, Steve ran into this one…. R.I.P. Air McNair, you will be missed, but immortalized in the Hall of Fame….

One of my daughter's friends waited on him
at the Outback Steakhouse in Owings Mills, MD a couple of years ago right after the Redskins exhibition game (he throw a pick-six and the Ravens lost a close one- oh well, only pre-season). He was there with his wife and four kids, had dinner and a few drinks or four. Tipped the waiter something like $150 on a $50 bill, after dinner ws comped by management. Said he was a friendly and polite, class man.
Why do restaurants comp the guys who are the most able to afford it in the first place? Guess it’s to get them to come back and that will bring others there if they hear that a celebrity eats there?

My friend also waited on him at outback.
Said he ordered beer and steak every time, and lots of it. And always gave like a 200% tip

I was a waiter at Chuckie Cheese and one Friday evening Rexx was there eating alone. He kept stealing skeet coupons from kids and walked out on his tab. The guy was a real jerk about it.
I heard MaLor stiffs the waiters at Pink Hippo.
